A novelty of the new Paris Agreement is the inclusion of a process for assessment and review of countries’ nationally determined pledges and contributions. The intent is to reveal whether similar countries are making comparable pledges, whether the totality of such pledges will achieve the global goal, and whether, over the coming years, the contributions actually made by countries will equal or exceed their pledges. The intent is also to provide an opportunity for countries to express their approval, or disapproval, of the pledges and contributions made by individual countries. Here we report the results of a lab experiment on the effects of such a process in a game in which players choose a group target, declare their individual pledges, and then make voluntary contributions to supply a public good. Our results show that a review process is more likely to affect targets and pledges than actual contributions. Even when a review process increases average contributions, the effect is relatively small. As the window for achieving the 2 °C goal will close soon, our results suggest that, rather than merely implement the Paris Agreement, negotiators should begin now to develop complementary approaches to limiting emissions, including the adoption of agreements that are designed differently than the one adopted in Paris.

Absolute cross sections for the transitions of the Kr atom into the 4s^1 and 4p^4nl states of the Kr^+ ion were measured in the 4s-electron threshold region by photon-induced fluorescence spectroscopy (PIFS). The cross sections for the transitions of the Kr atom into the 4s^1 and 4p^4nl states were also calculated, as well as the 4p^4nln'l' doubly excited states, in the frame of LS-coupling many-body technique. The cross sections of the doubly-excited atomic states were used to illustrate the pronounced contributions of the latter to the photoionization process, evident from the measurements. The comparison of theory and experiment led to conclusions about the origin of the main features observed in the experiment.

In continuation of our previous work on the quintet transitions 1s2s2p^2 ^5 P-1s2s2p3d ^5 P^0, ^5 D^0, results on other n = 2 - n' = 3 quintet transitions for elements N, 0 and F are presented. Assignments have been established by comparison with Multi-Configuration Dirac-Fock calculations. High spectral resolution on beam-foil spectroscopy was essential for the identification of most of the lines. For some of the quintet lines decay curves were measured, and the lifetimes extracted were found to be in reasonable agreement with MCDF calculations.

During the 6th International Sustainable Food Planning Conference, the so-called Design LABs partly replaced the regular parallel sessions. The reason for this change was twofold. On the one hand it aims to break through an endless series of parallel presentations, and on the other hand the LAB’s aim was to produce innovative design solutions for increasing the amount of food production in the city. This article describes this experiment to enhance the delivery of urban design concepts, which could substantially produce more food than current models. During the conference each of the parallel sessions half of the time consisted of a design-LAB, in which participants were brought together around a map with the task to design a substantial amount of food productive spaces in the case study site. The results of this experiment were dual: 1. a very committed attitude of delegates to this part of the conference and 2. the design tasks resulted in innovative design results. These results not only emphasise the potential design measures onsite but also pledged for a strong and more intensive connectivity with the city and the landscape around it. This makes it possible to link the supply and use of resources with the typology of the region, hence determining an effective and productive urban agriculture system.
