The quality of a drug is determined after establishing its authenticity by testing its purity and quality of the pure substance in the drug and its formulations.Ion selective sensors have become one of the most effective and powerful means for analytical scientists in the determination of drug substances and are playing an increasing role in pharmaceutical analysis.ISEs are cost effective, easy to prepare and can be rapidly manipulated . Potentiometric ion selective sensors have been developed for six drugs namely trimethoprim, ketoconazole, lamivudine, domperidon, nimesulide and Lomefloxacin. The sensors fabricated include both PVC membrane sensor as well as carbon paste sensor. A total of sixteen different sensors have been developed. The response parameters of all the sensors have been studied and the sensors were applied to the determination of the drugs in pharmaceutical formulations and also in real samples like urine.

The present study is on the nature, problems and prospects of the handloom industry in Kerala. The problems of the industry are mostly in the nature of low earnings of the workers, underutilisation of the existing capacity and low profit in its various sectors. The majority of the handloom co-operative societies are either dormant or facing liquidation. The income and employment of weavers are so pitiably low that they are living in utter poverty and starvation. Frequent price fluctuations of yarns, dyes and chemicals increase the cost of production and reduce the profitability. Consequently handloom fabrics are not able to compete with mill cloths and powerloom products. Accumulating the unsold stocks in the godowns of co-operative societies and with master weavers has become the practice of the day. Spinning mills in Kerala are producing only lower counts of yarns. S, handloom industry has to depend on textile mills in Tamil Nadu for higher counts of yarn. They create artificial scarcity and increase the prices exflorbitantly. Wage rates prevailing in Kerala are higher than those in Tamil Hadu. So rich master weavers are migrating to Tamil.Nadu and exporting the fabrics. under the label 'Kera1a Handlooms'. Governmental efforts to tackle the crisis by way of rebates and subsidies are found to be futile.

There is no baseline data available at present on the nature of various diseases that occur in a orchid population, under cultivation, in any commercial orchid farm maintained by small scale entrepreneurs who invest considerable amount of money, effort and time. The available data on type of disease symptoms, causative agent, , nature of pathogens, as to bacteria or ftmgi or any other biological agents, and their source, appropriate and effective control measures could not be devised, for large scale implementation and effective management, although arbitrary methods are being practiced by very few farms. Further influence of seasonal variations and environmental factors on disease outbreak is also not scientifically documented and statistically verified as to their authenticity. In this context, the primary objective of the present study was to create a data bank on the following aspects 1. Occurrence of different disease symptoms in Dendrobium hybrid over a period of one year covering all seasons 2. Variations in the environmental parameters at the orchid farms 3. Variations in the characteristics of water used for irrigation in the selected orchid farm 4. Microbial population associated with the various disease symptoms 5. Isolation and identification of bacteria isolated from diseased plants 6. Statistical treatment of the quantitative data and evolving statistical model
