Photothermal effect refers to heating of a sample due to the absorption of electromagnetic radiation. Photothermal (PT) heat generation which is an example of energy conversion has in general three kinds of applications. 1. PT material probing 2. PT material processing and 3. PT material destruction. The temperatures involved increases from 1-. 3. Of the above three, PT material probing is the most important in making significant contribution to the field of science and technology. Photothermal material characterization relies on high sensitivity detection techniques to monitor the effects caused by PT material heating of a sample. Photothermal method is a powerful high sensitivity non-contact tool used for non-destructive thermal characterization of materials. The high sensitivity of the photothermal methods has led to its application for analysis of low absorbance samples. Laser calorimetry, photothermal radiometry, pyroelectric technique, photoacoustic technique, photothermal beam deflection technique, etc. come under the broad class ofphotothermal techniques. However the choice of a suitable technique depends upon the nature of the sample, purpose of measurement, nature of light source used, etc. The present investigations are done on polymer thin films employing photothermal beam deflection technique, for the successful determination of their thermal diffusivity. Here the sample is excited by a He-Ne laser (A = 6328...\ ) which acts as the pump beam. Due to the refractive index gradient established in the sample surface and in the adjacent coupling medium, another optical beam called probe beam (diode laser, A= 6500A ) when passed through this region experiences a deflection and is detected using a position sensitive detector and its output is fed to a lock-in amplifier from which the amplitude and phase of the deflection can be directly obtained. The amplitude and phase of the signal is suitably analysed for determining the thermal diffusivity. The production of polymer thin film samples has gained considerable attention for the past few years. Plasma polymerization is an inexpensive tool for fabricating organic thin films. It refers to formation of polymeric materials under the influence of plasma, which is generated by some kind of electric discharge. Here plasma of the monomer vapour is generated by employing radio frequency (MHz) techniques. Plasma polymerization technique results in homogeneous, highly adhesive, thermally stable, pinhole free, dielectric, highly branched and cross-linked polymer films. The possible linkage in the formation of the polymers is suggested by comparing the FTIR spectra of the monomer and the polymer.Near IR overtone investigations on some organic molecules using local mode model are also done. Higher vibrational overtones often provide spectral simplification and greater resolution of peaks corresponding to nonequivalent X-H bonds where X is typically C, N or O. Vibrational overtone spectroscopy of molecules containing X-H oscillators is now a well established tool for molecular investigations. Conformational and steric differences between bonds and structural inequivalence ofCH bonds (methyl, aryl, acetylenic, etc.) are resolvable in the higher overtone spectra. The local mode model in which the X-H oscillators are considered to be loosely coupled anharmonic oscillators has been widely used for the interpretation of overtone spectra. If we are exciting a single local oscillator from the vibrational ground state to the vibrational state v, then the transition energy of the local mode overtone is given by .:lE a......v = A v + B v2 • A plot of .:lE / v versus v will yield A, the local mode frequency as the intercept and B, the local mode diagonal anharmonicity as the slope. Here A - B gives the mechanical frequency XI of the oscillator and B = X2 is the anharmonicity of the bond. The local mode parameters XI and X2 vary for non-equivalent X-H bonds and are sensitive to the inter and intra molecular environment of the X-H oscillator.

This thesis entitled “Contribution of size fractions of planktonic algae to primary organic productivity in the coastal waters of cochin, south west coast of india”. Marine ecosystems planktonic algae are the most important primary producers on wliich considerable attention is being given on account of their supreme status in the marine food chain. The study of primary production in the Indian Ocean started With DANA (I928-30),, John Murray t I933-34). Discovery ( I934) and Albatross (I947-48) expeditions which tried to evaluate productivity from nutrients and standing crop of phytoplankton .The bioproductivity of the marine environment is dependent on various primary producers. ranging in size from picoplankton to larger macro phytoplankton. The quantity and quality of various size fractions of planktonic algae at any locality depend mainly on the hydrographic conditions of the area .In the coastal waters of Cochin- south west coast of lndia. Planktonic algal community is composed mainly of the diatoms, the dinoflagellates, the blue-green algae and the silicoflagellates, the former two contributing the major flora and found distributed in the all size fractions. The maximum number of species of diatoms at station 1 and station 2 was found in the pre-monsoon season.. The size groups of planktonic algae greater than 53 um are dominated by filamentous- chain forming and colonial diatoms. The coastal waters of Cochin. planktonic algae less than 53 um in size contribute significantly to primary productivity and the biodiversity of the microflora, indicating the presence of rich fishery resources in the south west coast of india. The study of different size fractions of planktonic algae and their relative contribution to the primary organic production is a useful tool for the estimation of the quantity and quality of fisheries.A deeper investigation on the occurrence of these microalgae and proper identification of their species would be of immense help for the assessment of the specificity and magnitude of fishery resources.

The corporate views on wives roles and their subsequent involvement in their husbands career seem to be quiet surprising .Even though the corporate magnates are aware of wives influence on husbands professional advancements they seldom give credit to this factor. Again it may be an eye opener for the corporations which hardly take note of the executives wives their likes or dislikes, their expectations or frustrations. They are to understand that man in his totality and decisions affecting his family have to be taken seriously. More over they should respect the right of the wives by understanding the exact role played by them. Thus this study is to understand the roles and contributions of executives wives to the success of their husbands in their professions. The study tries to minimize the gap between the corporations and the wives ,and also to make the wives aware of their peculiar role in the career advancement of their executive husbands.

The central theme of this research concerns the study of vibrationally excited molecules. We have used the local mode description of such vibrational states, and this -model has now gained general acceptance. A central feature of the model is the Wloealizafion of vibrational energy. A study of these high—energy localized states provides example, becauseof this localization, overtone spectra, which measure the absorption of T vibrational energy, are extremely sensitive to the properties of X-H bonds. We also use -overtone spectra to study the conformation of molecules, i.e., the relative internal orientation of their bonds. The thesis comprises six chapters

FT-IR spectrum of quinoline-2-carbaldehyde benzoyl hydrazone (HQb H2O) was recorded and analyzed. The synthesis and crystal structure data are also described. The vibrational wavenumbers were examined theoretically using the Gaussian03 package of programs using HF/6-31G(d) and B3LYP/6-31G(d) levels of theory. The data obtained from vibrational wavenumber calculations are used to assign vibrational bands obtained in infrared spectroscopy of the studied molecule. The first hyperpolarizability, infrared intensities and Raman activities are reported. The calculated first hyperpolarizability is comparable with the reported values of similar derivatives and is an attractive object for future studies of non-linear optics. The geometrical parameters of the title compound obtained from XRD studies are in agreement with the calculated values. The changes in the CAN bond lengths suggest an extended p-electron delocalization over quinoline and hydrazone moieties which is responsible for the non-linearity of the molecule

The Raman and FTIR spectra of [C(NH2)3]2M(SO4)2 ·6H2O (withM= Co, Fe, Ni) were recorded and analysed. The observed spectral bands are assigned in terms of vibrations of guanidinium ions, sulphate groups and water molecules. The analysis shows that the sulphate tetrahedra are distorted from their free state symmetry Td to C1. This is attributed to the presence of hydrogen bonds from water molecules. The order of distortion of the metal oxygen octahedra influenced the distortion of the sulphate tetrahedra. The appearance of 1– 3 modes of water molecules above 3300 cm−1 indicates the presence of weak hydrogen bonds

Th(BrO3)3·H2O single crystals were grown from its aqueous solution at room temperature. Single crystal XRD, Raman and FTIR techniques were used to investigate the crystal structure. The crystal structure was solved by Patterson method. The as grown crystals are in monoclinic system with space group P21/c. The unit cell parameters are a = 12.8555(18) Å, b = 7.8970(11) Å, c = 9.0716(10) Å,  = 90°,  = 131.568° and  = 90° and unit cell volume is 689.1(2) Å3. Z = 8, R factor is 5.9. The Raman and FTIR studies indicate the lowering of symmetry of bromate anion from C3V to C1. Hydrogen bonds with varying strengths are present in the crystal. The centrosymmetric space group P21/c of the crystal is confirmed by the non-coincidence of majority of Raman and IR bands

FTIR and Raman spectra of FeClMoO4 single crystal and polycrystalline Na2MoO4, Na2MoO4·2H2O and Na2MoO4·2D2O are recorded and analysed. The band positions for different modes suggest that MoO4 tetrahedron is more distorted in FeClMoO4. The larger splitting observed for the bending modes and partial retention of degeneracy of the asymmetric stretching mode indicate that angular distortion is greater than liner distortion in MoO4 2 ion in FeClMoO4 confirming x-ray data. The non-appearance of the n1 and n2 modes in the IR and partial retention of the degeneracies of various modes show that MoO4 2 ion retains Td symmetry in Na2MoO4. Wavenumber values of the n1 mode indicate that the distortion of MoO4 tetrahedra in the four crystals are in the order FeClMoO4\ Na2MoO4·2H2O\Na2MoO4·2D2O\Na2MoO4. The water bands suggest the presence of two crystallographically distinct water molecules in Na2MoO4·2H2O. They form strong hydrogen bonds
