The present work is an attempt to understand the characteristics of the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere over the Asian summer monsoon region, more specifically over the Indian subcontinent. Mainly three important parameters are taken such as zonal wind, temperature and ozone over the UT/LS of the Asian summer monsoon region. It made a detailed study of its interannual variability and characteristics of theses parameters during the Indian summer monsoon period. Monthly values of zonal wind and temperature from the NCEP/NCAR reanalysis for the period 1960-2002 are used for the present study. Also the daily overpass total ozone data for the 12 Indian stations (from low latitude to high latitudes) from the TOMS Nimbus 7 satellite for the period 1979 to 1992 were also used to understand the total ozone variation over the Indian region. The study reveals that if QBO phases in the stratosphere is easterly or weak westerly then the respective monsoon is found to be DRY or below Normal . On the other hand, if the phase is westerly or weak easterly the respective Indian summer monsoon is noted as a WET year. This connection of stratospheric QBO phases and Indian summer monsoon gives more insight in to the long-term predictions of Indian summer monsoon rainfall. Wavelet analysis and EOF methods are the two advanced statistical techniques used in the present study to explore more information of the zonal wind that from the smaller scale to higher scale variability over the Asian summer monsoon region. The interannual variability of temperature for different stratospheric and tropospheric levels over the Asian summer monsoon region have been studied. An attempt has been made to understand the total ozone characteristics and its interannual variablilty over 12 Indian stations spread from south latitudes to north latitudes. Finally it found that the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere contribute significantly to monsoon variability and climate changes. It is also observed that there exists a link between the stratospheric QBO and Indian summer monsoon

The thesis comprises a set of experiments mainly focused on the improvement of L-glutamic acid fennentation. Much attention has been given to use of locally available raw materials, culturing the organism on inert solid substrates and also immobilization of the bacterial cells from the view point of long term utilization of biocatalyst and continuous operation of the stabilized system. Studies were also carried out for the down stream processing for the extraction and purification of L-glutamic acid. An attempt was made to study the morphological features of the microorganism including the cell premeability. In relation with the accumulation of glutamic acid within the cells an approach was made to study the behaviour of the Brevibacterium cells when they are exposed to hyper osmotic environment. Attempts were also made to study the requirement of iron and production of siderophores by this microbial strain. The search for a suitable nitrogen source for glutamate fermentation ended with a promising result that they got a potent urease activity and it can be utilized for many biotransfonnation studies. The entire thesis is presented in three sections, viz. introductory section, experimental section and the concluding section

The thesis is divided into six chapters, with Further subdivisions.’ Chapter one has two sections. Section one deals with a general introduction, and section two, with the material and treatment of data For the present investigation. The second chapter concerns with the distribution of oxyty in the oxygen minimum layer and its topography during the southwest and northeast monsoons. The distribution of oxyty at various isanosteric surfaces within which the oxygen minimum layer lies during southwest and northeast monsoons and their topographies Form chapter three. In the fourth chapter the Flow pattern and its influence on the oxygen minimum layer are discussed. The fifth chapter presents the scatter diagrams of oxyty against temperature at the various isanosteric surfaces. The sixth chapter summarises the results of the investigation and presents the conclusions drawn therefrom

Total biochemical composition of freshwater major carps, Labeo rohita -(r9hu); Catla catla (catla); Cirrltinus tnrigala (mrigal), in relation to size was evaluated . The water soluble nitrogen fraction constituted about 21% of the tota l nitro gen . Salt so luble fraction constituted 55 - 60% of the total nitrogen. Non-protein nitrogen represented 12% of the total nit rogen in all the cases except mri gal of small size (9.36%). The insoluble connec tive tissu e contributed to 2-3 per cent of tota l nitrogen . The monounsaturated fatty acid s (MUFA) formed 31-39% of the total fatty acids and 60-68% of the MUFA in freshwat er carps was CI 8:1. The esse ntial amino acids contributed to 41 to 51% of the total amino acid s in freshwater major carps. Arom atic amino acid content was sligh tly higher compared to marine fishe s while the proportion of proline was less. Varia tions in compos ition in rela tion to size are discu ssed . The autolytic activi ty was significantly higher in small fish in all the three species
