The primary aim of these investigations was to probe the spectroscopic, electrochemical, biological and single crystal X-ray diffraction studies of some selected transition metal complexes of 4N-monosubstituted thiosemicarbazones. Transition metal complexes with thiosemicarbazones exhibit a wide range of stereochemistries and possess potential biological activity. Metal complexes of thiosemicarbazones are proved to have improved pharmacological and therapeutic effects. The studies are conducted to bring about a fair understanding of the structure activity relationship and to develop certain effective and economical metal-based antimicrobial agents. Study showed that the thiosemicarbazones have antibacterial, antiviral and antiproliferative properties and hence used against tuberculosis, leprosy, psoriasis, rheumatism, trypanosomiasis and coccidiosis. Certain thiosemicarbazones showed a selective inhibition of HSV and HIV infections. The insolubility of most thiosemicarbazones in water causes difficulty in the oral administration in clinical practice. Transition metal complexes are found to have more activity than uncombined thiosemicarbazones. They exhibit a variety of denticity and can be varied by proper substitution. The stereochemistry assumed by the thiosemicarbazones during the coordination with transition metal ions depends on the factors such as preparative conditions and availability of additional bonding site in the ligand moiety and charge of the ligand. The resulting complexes exhibited a wide range of stereochemistries and have biomimic activity and potential application as sensors.

Microwave dielectric ceramics based on GdTiNb,-,.Ta,O6 and Sml _.,Y,TiTa06 have been prepared by conventional solid state method . The GdTiTaO6 and SmTiTaO6 have aeschenite structure with positive rr and GdTiNbO6 and YTiTaO6 have euxenite structure with negative rr. The rr of the ceramics has been tuned by preparing solid solution phases between the aeschynites and euxenites for a possible zero rr material . It is observed that GdTiNbt_YTa.,O6 undergoes a phase transition from aeschynite to euxenite when x=0.75 and in Sml-,YxTiTa06 for x= 0.73. The microwave dielectric properties change abruptly near the transition region . The rr value approaches zero near the phase transition region while the samples have poor sinterability and poor quality factor . The unloaded quality factor, dielectric constant and the sign of rr of the solid solution phases are found to depend on the average ionic radius of the rare earth ion in RE ,-5RE',TiTaO6. The boundary of the euxenite-aeschynite phase transition occurs at an average ( RE) ionic radius of 0.915 A in Sm,_, Y,.TiTaO6 solid solution phases

The primary aim of the present study is to acquire a large amount of gravity data, to prepare gravity maps and interpret the data in terms of crustal structure below the Bavali shear zone and adjacent regions of northern Kerala. The gravity modeling is basically a tool to obtain knowledge of the subsurface extension of the exposed geological units and their structural relationship with the surroundings. The study is expected to throw light on the nature of the shear zone, crustal configuration below the high-grade granulite terrain and the tectonics operating during geological times in the region. The Bavali shear is manifested in the gravity profiles by a steep gravity gradient. The gravity models indicate that the Bavali shear coincides with steep plane that separates two contrasting crustal densities extending beyond a depth of 30 km possibly down to Moho, justifying it to be a Mantle fault. It is difficult to construct a generalized model of crustal evolution in terms of its varied manifestations using only the gravity data. However, the data constrains several aspects of crustal evolution and provides insights into some of the major events.

Algal blooms are naturally occurring phenomena in the aquatic environment. These blooms cause mass mortalities of wild and farmed fish and shellfish, human intoxications which sometimes result in death, alteration of marine trophic structure through adverse effects on larvae and other life history stages of commercially important species and death of marine animals. Occurrences of harmful algal blooms and associated mortality have been reported along the coastal waters of India since the early period of the last century. The present study was taken up to study the dynamics of major phytoplankton blooms, which occur along the Kerala coast. The results of quantitative and qualitative analysis of phytoplankton in the coastal waters of Vizhinjam and Chombala, their species diversity and community structure is presented and the major algal blooms recorded along the coast of Kerala during the study period is described and their occurrence is related to the hydrographic and meteorological variations. There is a clear evident from these works in the Indian region that the fishes avoid areas where these harmful algae bloom, either due to the toxicity or due to some irritant property of the chemicals secreted by the algae. Taxonomic diversity studies indicated a change in the community structure of commercial finfishes, crustaceans and molluscs due to the bloom of C.marina and funnel plots indicated the deviation in taxonomic distinctness during the bloom period from theoretical mean for the region.

A navel ultra-thin radar-absorbing material (RAM) using metanwterials is presented and the absorption performance is examined. Due to the high-impedance property of the metamalerials. the thickness of the RAM is about several tenths of the center wavelength of the absorption band, which is considerably thinner than conventional absorbers. This thesis entitled spatial and temporal variarion of microbial community structure in surficial sediments of cochin estuary.In the estuarine and coastal systems, organic matter (OM) is derived not only from autochthonous primary production, but also from allochthonous (terrestrial) organic matter (OM) delivered by river discharge and runoff. A significant portion of the OM sinks through the water column and is ultimately stored in carbon pool in the sediments.Analysis of spatial and temporal variation in benthic microbial community of a tropical estuary was conducted for the first time using non selective measures that affirms that PLFA approach is a sensitive and reliable method in determining microbial community structures of surficial sediments of estuary.The close relationship between the concentrations of the microbial fatty acids and total biomass indicates that bacteria could account for the largest proportion of the biomass in the sediments.This is first study that has documented the changes in microbial community composition linkage to biotic and abiotic variables in benthic estuarine ecosystem. This contemporaneous community will be the backdrop for understanding the response of autochthonous community to increasing anthropogenic stress.

Median filtering is a simple digital non—linear signal smoothing operation in which median of the samples in a sliding window replaces the sample at the middle of the window. The resulting filtered sequence tends to follow polynomial trends in the original sample sequence. Median filter preserves signal edges while filtering out impulses. Due to this property, median filtering is finding applications in many areas of image and speech processing.
