The main objective of the present study was to explore ways of making latex products more cost effective and versatile. Polyethylene glycol was identified as a surface active agent in latex compounds which improves the filler-polymer interaction and also distributes the filler more uniformly. The use of such surface active agents can develop filled latex products with improved mechanical properties at a lower cost. In this study dispersions of carbon black and silica were successfully added to NR latex under high speed stirring without destabilizing latex.

In the present work, Indigenous polymer coated Tin Free Steel cans were analyzed fortheir suitability for thermal processing and storage of fish and fish products following standard methods. The raw materials used for the development of ready to eat thermally processed fish products were found to be of fresh condition. The values for various biochemical and microbiological parameters of the raw materials were well within the limits. Based on the analysis of commercial sterility, instrumental colour, texture, WB-shear force and sensory parameters, squid masala processed to F0 value of 8 min with a total process time of 38.5 min and cook value of 92 min was chosen as the optimum for squid masala in tin free steel cans while shrimp curry processed to F0 7 min with total process time of 44.0 min and cook value of 91.1 min was found to be ideal and was selected for storage study. Squid masala and shrimp curry thermally processed in indigenous polymer coated TFS cans were found to be acceptable even after one year of storage at room temperaturebased on the analysis of various sensory and biochemical parameters. Analysis of the Commission Internationale d’ Eclirage L*, a* and b* color values showed that the duration of exposure to heat treatment influenced the color parameters: the lightness (L*) and yellowness (b*)decreased, and the redness (a*) significantly increased with the increase in processing time or reduction in processing temperature.Instrumental analysis of texture showed that hardness-1 & 2 decreased with reduction in retort temperature while cohesiveness value did not show any appreciable change with decrease in temperature of processing. Other texture profile parameters like gumminess, springiness and chewiness decreased significantly with increase of processing time. W-B shear force values of mackerel meat processed at 130 °C were significantly higher than those processed at 121.1 and 115 °C. HTST processing of mackerel in brine helped in reducing the process time and improving the quality. The study also indicated that indigenous polymer coated TFS cans with easy openends can be a viable alternative to the conventional tin and aluminium cans. The industry can utilize these cans for processing ready to eat fish and shell fish products for both domestic and export markets. This will help in reviving the canning industry in India.

Optical absorption and emission spectral studies of various phthalocyanine molecules, viz., LaPc, NdPc, SmPc, EuPc, CuPc and ZnPc in a polymer matrix of cyano acrylate are reported for the first time. All the absorption spectra show an intense B band (Soret) in the UV region followed by a weaker Q band in the visible region. The positions of the Q and B bands are found to have dependence on the metallic substitution. Values of the important spectral parameters, viz., molar extinction coefficient (ϵ), oscillator strength (f), radiative transition rate and decay time of the excited singlet state are also presented and compared with other solid matrices. The recorded fluorescence spectrum shows two broad emission bands in the case of NdPc, whereas for ZnPc only a very weak band is observed. The absence of emission bands for the other metallated phthalocyanines is attributed to increased spin orbit interaction and intersystem crossing.

The study is undertaken with an objective to investigate the linkage between air-sea fluxes in the Indian Ocean and monsoon forcing. Since the monsoon activity is linked to fluxes, the variability of surface marine meteorological fields under the variable monsoon conditions is also studied. The very objective of the present study is to document various sea surface parameters of the Indian Ocean and to examine the anomalies found in them. Hence it is attempted to relate the anomaly to the variability of monsoon over India, highlighting the occasion of contrasting monsoon periods. The analysis of anomalies of surface meteorological fields such as SST, wind speed and direction, sea level pressure and cloud cover for contrasting monsoons are also studied. During good monsoon years, the pressure anomalies are negative indicating a fall in SLP during pre-monsoon and monsoon months. The interaction of the marine atmosphere with tropical Indian Ocean and its influence on ISMR continue to be an area of active research.

The present study focused on the quality of rainwater at various land use locations and its variations on interaction with various domestic rainwater harvesting systems.Sampling sites were selected based upon the land use pattern of the locations and were classified as rural, urban, industrial and sub urban. Rainwater samples were collected from the south west monsoon of May 2007 to north east monsoon of October 2008, from four sampling sites namely Kothamangalam, Emakulam, Eloor and Kalamassery, in Ernakulam district of the State of Kerala, which characterized typical rural, urban, industrial and suburban locations respectively. Rain water samples at various stages of harvesting were also collected. The samples were analyzed according to standard procedures and their physico-chemical and microbiological parameters were determined. The variations of the chemical composition of the rainwater collected were studied using statistical methods. It was observed that 17.5%, 30%, 45.8% and 12.1% of rainwater samples collected at rural, urban, industrial and suburban locations respectively had pH less than 5.6, which is considered as the pH of cloud water at equilibrium with atmospheric CO,.Nearly 46% of the rainwater samples were in acidic range in the industrial location while it was only 17% in the rural location. Multivariate statistical analysls was done using Principal Component Analysis, and the sources that inf1uence the composition of rainwater at each locations were identified .which clearly indicated that the quality of rain water is site specific and represents the atmospheric characteristics of the free fall The quality of harvested rainwater showed significant variations at different stages of harvesting due to deposition of dust from the roof catchment surface, leaching of cement constituents etc. Except the micro biological quality, the harvested rainwater satisfied the Indian Standard guide lines for drinking water. Studies conducted on the leaching of cement constituents in water concluded that tanks made with ordinary portland cement and portland pozzolana cement could be safely used for storage of rain water.

The current research investigates the possibility of using single walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) as filler in polymers to impart several properties to the matrix polymer. SWNTs in a polymer matrix like poly(ethylene terephthalate) induce nucleation in its melt crystallization, provide effective reinforcement and impart electrical conductivity. We adopt a simple melt compounding technique for incorporating the nanotubes into the polymer matrix. For attaining a better dispersion of the filler, an ultrasound assisted dissolution-evaporation method has also been tried. The resulting enhancement in the materials properties indicates an improved disentanglement of the nanotube ropes, which in turn provides effective matrix-filler interaction. PET-SWNT nanocomposite fibers prepared through melt spinning followed by subsequent drawing are also found to have significantly higher mechanical propertiesas compared to pristine PET fiber.SWNTs also find applications in composites based on elastomers such as natural rubber as they can impart electrical conductivity with simultaneous improvement in the mechanical properties.

The thesis presented the fabrication and characterisation of polymer optical fibers in their applications as optical amplifier and smart sensors.Optical polymers such as PMMA are found to be a very good host material due to their ability to incorporate very high concentration of optical gain media like fluorescent dyes and rare earth compounds. High power and high gain optical amplification in organic dye-doped polymer optical fibers is possible due to extremely large emission cross sections of oyes. Dye doped (Rhodamine 6G) optical fibers were fabricated by using indigenously developed polymer optical fiber drawing tower. Loss characterization of drawn dye doped fibers was carried out using side illumination technique. The advantage of the above technique is that it is a nondestructive method and can also be used for studying the uniformity in fiber diameter and doping. Sensitivity of the undoped polymer fibers to temperature and microbending were also studied in its application in smart sensors.Optical amplification studies using the dye doped polymer optical fibers were carried out and found that an amplification of l8dB could be achieved using a very short fiber of length lOcm. Studies were carried out in fibers with different dye concentrations and diameter and it was observed that gain stability was achieved at relatively high dye concentrations irrespective of the fiber diameter.Due to their large diameter, large numerical aperture, flexibility and geometrical versatility of polymer optical fibers it has a wide range of applications in the field of optical sensing. Just as in the case of conventional silica based fiber optic sensors, sensing techniques like evanescent wave, grating and other intensity modulation schemes can also be efficiently utilized in the case of POF based sensors. Since polymer optical fibers have very low Young's modulus when compared to glass fibers, it can be utilized for sensing mechanical stress and strain efficiently in comparison with its counterpart. Fiber optic sensors have proved themselves as efficient and reliable devices to sense various parameters like aging, crack formation, weathering in civil structures. A similar type of study was carried out to find the setting characteristics of cement paste used for constructing civil structures. It was found that the measurements made by using fiber optic sensors are far more superior than that carried out by conventional methods. More over,POF based sensors were found to have more sensitivity as well.

Dependence of energy transfer parameters on excitation wavelength has been investigated in poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) optical fibre preforms doped with C 540:Rh B dye mixture by studying the fluorescence intensity and the lifetime variations. A fluorescence spectrophotometer was used to record the excitation spectra of the samples for the emission wavelengths 495 and 580 nm. The fluorescence emission from the polymer rods was studied at four specific excitation wavelengths viz; 445, 465, 488 and 532 nm. The fluorescence lifetime of the donor molecule was experimentally measured in polymer matrix by time correlated single photon counting technique. The energy transfer rate constants and transfer efficiencies were calculated and their dependence on the acceptor concentration was analysed for three excitation wavelengths. It was found that any change in the excitation wavelength leads to significant variations in the quenching characteristics, which in turn affect the calculated energy transfer parameters.

The acoustic signals generated in solids due to interaction with pulsed laser beam is used to determine the ablation threshold of bulk polymer samples of teflon (polytetrafluoroethylene) and nylon under the irradiation from a Q-switched Nd:YAG laser at 1.06µm wavelength. A suitably designed piezoelectric transducer is employed for the detection of photoacoustic (PA) signals generated in this process. It has been observed that an abrupt increase in the amplitude of the PA signal occurs at the ablation threshold. Also there exist distinct values for the threshold corresponding to different mechanisms operative in producing damages like surface morphology, bond breaking and melting processes at different laser energy densities.

The present work focuses on the modification of the commonly used thermoplastics, polypropylene and polystyrene using nanosilica preparcd from a cheap source of sodium silicate. Melt compounding technique has been used for nanocomposite preparation as it is simple and suited to injection moulding. Nanosilica in a polymer matrix provide significant enhancement in strength, stiffness and impact strength. Incorporation of silica particles in a polymer also improves its thennal stability. To achieve better dispersion of fillers in polymer matrices the mixing was done at different shear rates. The enhancement in material properties indicates that at higher shear rates there is greater interaction between particles and the matrix and it depends on filler concentration and type of polymer used. N anosilica is a useful filler in thennoplastic polymers and has been applied in automotive applications, electronic appliances and consumer goods. This thesis is divided into six chapters. General introduction to the topic is described in chapter 1. Salient features of polymer nanocomposites, their synthesis, properties and applications are presented. A review of relevant literature and the scope and objectives are also mentioned in this chapter. The materials used and the vanous experimental method and techniques employed in the study are described in chapter 2. Preparation of nanocomposites by melt blending using Thenno Haake Rheocord, preparation of samples, evaluation of mechanical and thennal properties using UTM, Impact testing and characterization using DMA, TGA and DSC and morphology by SEM are described. The preparation of nanosilica from a laboratory scale to a pilot plant scale is described in chapter 3. Generation of surface modified silica, evaluation of kinetic parameters of the synthesis reaction, scale up of the reactor and modeling of the reactor are also dealt with in this chapter. The modification of the commodity thennoplastic, Polypropylene using nanosilica is described in chapter 4. Preparation of PP/silica nanocomposites, evaluation of mechanical properties, thermal and crystallization characteristics, water absorption and ageing resistance studies are also presented. The modification of Polystyrene using synthesized nanosilica IS described in chapter 5. This doctoral thesis addresses the growing concern about the significant changes in the climatic and weather patterns due to the aerosol loading that have taken place in the Indo Gangetic Plain(IGP)which includes most of the Northern Indian region. The study region comprises of major industrial cities in India (New Delhi, Kanpur, Allahabad, Jamshedpur and Kolkata). Northern and central parts of India are one of the most thickly populated areas in the world and have the most intensely farmed areas. Rapid increase in population and urbanization has resulted in an abrupt increase in aerosol concentrations in recent years. The IGP has a major source of coal; therefore most of the industries including numerous thermal power plants that run on coal are located around this region. They inject copious amount of aerosols into the atmosphere. Moreover, the transport of dust aerosols from arid locations is prevalent during the dry months which increase the aerosol loading in theatmosphere. The topography of the place is also ideal for the congregation of aerosols. It is bounded by the Himalayas in the north, Thar Desert in the west, the Vindhyan range in the south and Brahmaputra ridge in the east. During the non‐monsoon months (October to May) the weather in the location is dry with very little rainfall. Surface winds are weak during most of the time in this dry season. The aerosols that reach the location by means of long distance transport and from regional sources get accumulated under these favourable conditions. The increase in aerosol concentration due to the complex combination of aerosol transport and anthropogenic factors mixed with the contribution from the natural sources alters the optical properties and the life time of clouds in the region. The associated perturbations in radiative balance have a significant impact on the meteorological parameters and this in turn determines the precipitation forming process. Therefore, any change in weather which disturbs the normal hydrological pattern is alarming in the socio‐economic point of view. Hence, the main focus of this work is to determine the variation in transport and distribution of aerosols in the region and to understand the interaction of these aerosols with meteorological parameters and cloud properties.

Frames are the most widely used structural system for multistorey buildings. A building frame is a three dimensional discrete structure consisting of a number of high rise bays in two directions at right angles to each other in the vertical plane. Multistorey frames are a three dimensional lattice structure which are statically indeterminate. Frames sustain gravity loads and resist lateral forces acting on it. India lies at the north westem end of the Indo-Australian tectonic plate and is identified as an active tectonic area. Under horizontal shaking of the ground, horizontal inertial forces are generated at the floor levels of a multistorey frame. These lateral inertia forces are transferred by the floor slab to the beams, subsequently to the columns and finally to the soil through the foundation system. There are many parameters that affect the response of a structure to ground excitations such as, shape, size and geometry of the structure, type of foundation, soil characteristics etc. The Soil Structure Interaction (SS1) effects refer to the influence of the supporting soil medium on the behavior of the structure when it is subjected to different types of loads. Interaction between the structure and its supporting foundation and soil, which is a complete system, has been modeled with finite elements. Numerical investigations have been carried out on a four bay, twelve storeyed regular multistorey frame considering depth of fixity at ground level, at characteristic depth of pile and at full depth. Soil structure interaction effects have been studied by considering two models for soil viz., discrete and continuum. Linear static analysis has been conducted to study the interaction effects under static load. Free vibration analysis and further shock spectrum analysis has been conducted to study the interaction effects under time dependent loads. The study has been extended to four types of soil viz., laterite, sand, alluvium and layered. The structural responses evaluated in the finite element analysis are bending moment, shear force and axial force for columns, and bending moment and shear force for beams. These responses increase with increase in the founding depth; however these responses show minimal increase beyond the characteristic length of pile. When the soil structure interaction effects are incorporated in the analysis, the aforesaid responses of the frame increases upto the characteristic depth and decreases when the frame has been analysed for the full depth. It has been observed that shock spectrum analysis gives wide variation of responses in the frame compared to linear elastic analysis. Both increase and decrease in responses have been observed in the interior storeys. The good congruence shown by the two finite element models viz., discrete and continuum in linear static analysis has been absent in shock spectrum analysis.

Although the main application of optical fibers are in the field of telecommunication, optical fiber based sensors of various designs are becoming valuable devices for wide industrial applications. The advantages of optical fiber-based sensors include high sensitivity, insensitivity to electromagnetic radiation; spark free, light weight and minimal intrusiveness due to their relatively small size and deployment in harsh and hostile environments. It has been proved that POI-7 based sensors can be employed to detect a great variety of parameters including temperature, humidity, pressure, refractive index etc. The proposed thesis presented in six chapters deals with the work carried on dye doped and undoped POF for photonic device applications such as amplifier, laser and sensor
