The spectral and nonlinear optical characteristics of nano ZnO and its composites are investigated. The fluorescence behaviour of nano colloids of ZnO has been studied as a function of the excitation wavelength and there is a red shift in emission peak with excitation wavelength. Apart from the observation of the reported ultra violet and green emissions, our results reveal that additional blue emissions at 420 nm and 490 nm are developed with increasing particle size. Systematic studies on nano ZnO have indicated the presence of luminescence due to excitonic emissions when excited with 255 nm as well as significant contribution from surface defect states when excited with 325 nm. In the weak confinement regime, the third-order optical susceptibility χ(3) increases with increasing particle size (R) and annealing temperature (T) and a R2 and T2.5 dependence of χ(3) is obtained for nano ZnO. ZnO nanocolloids exhibit induced absorption whereas the self assembled films of ZnO exhibit saturable absorption due to saturation of linear absorption of ZnO defect states and electronic effects. ZnO nanocomposites exhibit negative nonlinear index of refraction which can be attributed to two photon absorption followed by weak free carrier absorption. The increase of the third-order nonlinearity in the composites can be attributed to the enhancement of exciton oscillator strength. The nonlinear response of ZnO nanocomposites is wavelength dependent and switching from induced absorption to saturable absorption has been observed at resonant wavelengths. Such a change-over is related to the interplay of plasmon/exciton band bleach and optical limiting mechanisms. This study is important in identifying the spectral range and the composition over which the nonlinear material acts as an optical limiter. ZnO based nanocomposites are potential materials for enhanced and tunable light emission and for the development of nonlinear optical devices with a relatively small optical limiting threshold.

In this article we present the spectral and nonlinear optical properties of ZnO–TiO2 nanocomposites prepared by colloidal chemical synthesis. Emission peaks of ZnO–TiO2 nanocomposites change from 340 nm to 385 nm almost in proportion to changes in Eg. The nanocomposites show self-defocusing nonlinearity and good nonlinear absorption behaviour. The nonlinear refractive index and the nonlinear absorption increase with increasing TiO2 volume fraction at 532 nm and can be attributed to the enhancement of exciton oscillator strength. The spectral and nonlinear optical properties of ZnO based nanocomposites prepared by colloidal chemical synthesis are investigated. Very strong UV emissions are observed from ZnO–Ag, ZnO– Cu and ZnO–SiO2 nanocomposites. The strongest visible emission of a typical ZnO–Cu nanocomposite is over ten times stronger than that of pure Cu due to transition from deep donor level to the copper induced level. The optical band gap of ZnO–CdS and ZnO–TiO2 nanocomposites is tunable and emission peaks changes almost in proportion to changes in band gap. Nonlinear optical response of these nanocomposites is studied using nanosecond laser pulses from a tunable laser in the wavelength range of 450–650 nm at resonance and off-resonance wavelengths. The nonlinear response is wavelength dependent and switching from RSA to SA has been observed at resonant wavelengths. Such a change-over is related to the interplay of plasmon/exciton band bleach and optical limiting mechanisms. The observed nonlinear absorption is explained through two photon absorption followed by weak free carrier absoption, interband absorption and nonlinear scattering mechanisms. The nonlinearity of the silica colloid is low and its nonlinear response can be improved by making composites with ZnO and ZnO–TiO2. The increase of the third-order nonlinearity in the composites can be attributed to the enhancement of exciton oscillator strength. This study is important in identifying the spectral range and the composition over which the nonlinear material acts as an RSA based optical limiter. These nanocomposites can be used as optical limiters and are potential materials for the light emission and for the development of nonlinear optical devices with a relatively small limiting threshold.

In this article, we present the spectral and nonlinear optical properties of ZnO–CdS nanocomposites prepared by colloidal chemical synthesis. The optical band gap (Eg) of the material is tunable between 2.62 and 3.84 eV. The emission peaks of ZnO–CdS nanocomposites change from 385 to 520 nm almost in proportion to changes in Eg. It is possible to obtain a desired luminescence color from UV to green by simply adjusting the composition. The nonlinear optical response of these samples is studied by using nanosecond laser pulses from a tunable laser at the excitonic resonance and off-resonance wavelengths. The nonlinear response is wavelength dependent, and switching from saturable absorption (SA) to reverse SA (RSA) has been observed for samples as the excitation wavelength changes from the excitonic resonance to off-resonance wavelengths. Such a changeover in the sign of the nonlinearity of ZnO–CdS nanocomposites is related to the interplay of exciton bleach and optical limiting mechanisms. The ZnO–CdS nanocomposites show self-defocusing nonlinearity and good nonlinear absorption behavior at off-resonant wavelengths. The nonlinear refractive index and the nonlinear absorption increase with increasing CdS volume fraction at 532 nm. The observed nonlinear absorption is attributed to two photon absorption followed by weak free carrier absorption. In this article, we present the spectral and nonlinear optical properties of ZnOCu nanocomposites prepared by colloidal chemical synthesis. The emission consisted of two peaks. The 385-nm ultraviolet (UV) peak is attributed to ZnO and the 550-nm visible peak is attributed to Cu nanocolloids. Obvious enhancement of UV and visible emission of the samples is observed and the strongest UV emission of a typical ZnOCu nanocomposite is over three times stronger than that of pure ZnO. Cu acts as a sensitizer and the enhancement of UV emission are caused by excitons formed at the interface between Cu and ZnO. As the volume fraction of Cu increases beyond a particular value, the intensity of the UV peak decreases while the intensity of the visible peak increases, and the strongest visible emission of a typical ZnOCu nanocomposite is over ten times stronger than that of pure Cu. The emission mechanism is discussed. Nonlinear optical response of these samples is studied using nanosecond laser pulses from a tunable laser in the wavelength range of 450650 nm, which includes the surface plasmon absorption (SPA) band. The nonlinear response is wavelength dependent and switching from reverse saturable absorption (RSA) to saturable absorption (SA) has been observed for Cu nanocolloids as the excitation wavelength changes from the low absorption window region to higher absorption regime near the SPA band. However, ZnO colloids and ZnOCu nanocomposites exhibit induced absorption at this wavelength. Such a changeover in the sign of the nonlinearity of ZnOCu nanocomposites, with respect to Cu nanocolloids, is related to the interplay of plasmon band bleach and optical limiting mechanisms. The SA again changes back to RSA when we move over to the infrared region. The ZnOCu nanocomposites show self-defocusing nonlinearity and good nonlinear absorption behavior. The nonlinear refractive index and the nonlinear absorption increases with increasing Cu volume fraction at 532 nm. The observed nonlinear absorption is explained through two-photon absorption followed by weak free-carrier absorption and interband absorption mechanisms. This study is important in identifying the spectral range and composition over which the nonlinear material acts as a RSA-based optical limiter. ZnOCu is a potential nanocomposite material for the light emission and for the development of nonlinear optical devices with a relatively small limiting threshold.

In the present scenario, there is an increasing demand for natural products in food industry, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and agricultural sectors. In this context phytochemical study to identify newer chemicals has got great relevance. Phytochemical studies have become more reliable and encouraging with the development of modern analytical techniques. In the present work the leaves of Piper colubrinum (Piperaceae), aerial parts of Mussaenda fiondosa (Rubiaceae) and Humboldtia vahliana (Leguminosae) and the pericarp of fruits of Artocarpus heterophyllus (Moraceae) were investigated for their secondary metabolites. The major compounds isolated belong to the groups of flavonoids and triterpenoids.Naturally occurring flavonoids have been used widely in chemotaxonomic studies of plants. Flavones and flavonols constitute a group of biosynthetically related natural products. No universal function has been established for flavones and flavonols in plants. However, many functions in individual plants have been demonstrated. These include protection of plants from ultraviolet light, insects and pests; pollinator attractants; antioxidants; plant hormone controllers; enzyme inhibitors and allelopathic agents. Flavonoids are attracting the attention of medical scientists in recent years because of their anticarcinogenic, antiallergic and antiinflammatory properties. The recent discovery that flavonoids are involved in the process of nitrogen fixation in plants also opens the way for agricultural application of these constituents.Triterpenoids are another class of compounds that are ubiquitous in plants. Some triterpenoids present in the latex and resins of plants are believed to be involved in chemical defence against pathogens and herbivores. Triterpenoids possess various biological properties including anti-inflammatory, antifeedant, pesticidal, fungitoxic and antimicrobial activities. Triterpenoids with cytotoxic activity and inhibitory effect on seed germination are also known.

This thesis Entitled phenylethynylarene based Donor-Acceptor systems:Desigh,Synthesis and Photophysical studies. A strategy for the design of donor-acceptor dyads, wherein decay of the charge separated (CS) state to low lying local triplet levels could possibly be prevented, is proposed. In order to examine this strategy, a linked donor-acceptor dyad BPEPPT with bis(phenylethYlly/)pyrene (BPEP) as the light absorber and acceptor and phenothiazine (PT) as donor was designed and photoinduced electron transfer in the dyad investigated. Absorption spectra of the dyad can be obtained by adding contributions due 10 the BPEP and PT moieties indicating that the constituents do not interact in the ground stale. Fluorescence of the BPEP moiety was efficiently quenched by the PT donor and this was attributed to electron lransfer from PT to BPEP. Picosecond transient absorption studies suggested formation of a charge separated state directly from the singlet excited state of BPEP. Nanosecond flash photolysis experiments gave long-ived transient absorptions assignable to PT radical cation and BPEP radical anion. These assignments were confirmed by oxygen quenching studies and secondary electron transfer experiments. Based on the available data, energy level diagram for BPEP-PT was constructed. The long lifetime of the charge separated state was attributed to the inverted region effects. The CS state did not undergo decay to low lying BPEP triplet indicating the success of our strategy

The thesis embodies the results of a study on the variations in the parameters of productivity of two test species, a chlorophycean alga and a diatom. The chlorophycean alga Scenedesmus abundans was isolated from a fresh water pond whereas the diatom Nitzschia clausii was from the Cochin backwaters. Their growth parameters and their variations due to the effect of addition of some heavy metals have been studied. The growth parameters include biomass, production, respiration, photosynthetic pigments and end products of photosynthesis. The cell numbers were estimated by using a haemocytometer and production and respiration by oxygen light and dark technique. Spectrophotometric analysis for pigments, anthrone method for carbohydrate and heated biuret method for protein were the different methods employed in the present investigation. The present study is confined to nickel, cobalt, trivalent and hexavalent chromium. Different metals are discharged from various industries in and around Cochin. The effects of these metals individually and in combination are studied. Experiments to determine the effects of interaction of metals in combination enabled the assessment of the antagonistic and synergistic effect of metals on test species. The concentration or accumulation of metals on algae was determined by Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry. The thesis has been divided into seven chapters. The introductory chapter explains the relevance of the present investigation. Chapter two presents the review of literature based on the work in relation to toxicity. Third chapter gives a detailed description of the material and specialized methods followed for the study. The effects of various metals selected for study - nickel, cobalt, trivalent and hexavalent chromium on the qualitative and quantitative aspects of productivity forms the subject of matter of the fourth chapter. The fifth chapter gives the impact of metals in combination on two species of algae. A general discussion and summary are included in the sixth and seventh chapters

The need of miniaturization in the present day communication industry is challenging. In the present scenario, printed antenna technology is highly suitable for wireless communication due to its low profile and other desirable radiation characteristics. Small monopole type antennas are overruled by compact small antennas for present day mobile communication applications. Coplanar waveguides (CPW) are printed on one side of a dielectric substrate. CPW have attracted the attention of antenna designers due to their excellent properties like ease of integration with ‘MMIC’, low cost, wide bandwidth, flexibility towards multiband operation, low radiation leakage and less dispersion. The requirement of omnidirectional coverage, light weight and low cost made these CPW fed antennas a good candidate for wireless applications. The main focus of the thesis is the study of coplanar waveguide transmission line. Rigorous investigations were performed on both the ground plane and signal strip of a coplanar waveguide transmission line to create effective radiation characteristics. Good amount of works have been done to transform CPW line to antenna suitable for mobile phone applications

Studies on sporulation of four commercially important red (sea-weeds) algae ^(agarophytes) namely Gelidiella acerosa, Gracilaria corticata, G edulis and Hypnea musciformis growing in the vicinity of’ Mandapam coast were carried out from October 1981 to September 1983. During the two years of study; fruiting behavior in the natural population of these species was also investigated. Laboratory experiments were carried out with the four algae sea weeds to collect information on seasonal aspects of spore production and diurnal variation of spore shedding. Detailed studies were made under laboratory conditions to know the effects of some selected environmental factors such as desiccation, salinity, temperature, light intensity and photoperiod on spore output in Gelidiella acerosa, Gracilaria edulis and kypnea musciformis hydrological data were also collected from the inter-tial region around mandapam area. The result obtained on all the above aspects are presented in this thesis

Gelation provides a unique medium, which often induces organization of molecules resulting in the modulation of their optical, morphological and electronic properties thereby opening a new world of fascinating materials with interesting physical properties at nano- meso- and macroscopic levels. Supramolecular gels based on linear π-systems have attracted much attention due to their inherent optical and electronic properties which find application in organic electronics, light harvesting and sensing. They exhibit reversible properties due to the dynamic nature of noncovalent forces. As a result, studies on such soft materials are currently a topic of great interest. Recently, researchers are actively involved in the development of sensors and stimuli-responsive materials based on self-assembled π-systems, which are also called smart materials. The present thesis is divided into four chapters
