The Lewis acidity of yttrium and dysprosium exchanged zeolite Y and ZSM-5 has been determined by titration method using Hammett indicators. The acidity of the Y form increases with increase in concentration of the rare earth cation in the Y zeolite. It is independent of the amount of the rare earth ion for ZSM-5. The data have been correlated with the activity of these zeolites for the esterification of butanol using acetic acid.

The thesis entitled “ Investigations on the solvent extraction and luminescence of lanthanoids with mixtures of heterocyclic β-diketone S and various neutral oxo-donors” embodies the results of investigations carried out on the solvent extraction of trivalent lanthanoids with various heterocyclic β-diketones in the presence and absence of neutral oxo-donors and also on the luminescent studies of Eu3+-heterocyclic β-diketonate complexes with Lewis bases. The primary objective of the present work is to generate the knowledge base, especially to understand the interactions of lanthanoid-heterocyclic β-diketonates with various macrocyclic ligands such as crown ethers and neutral organophosphorus extractants , with a view to achieve better selectivity. The secondary objective of this thesis is to develop novel lanthanoid luminescent materials based on 3-phenyl-4-aroyl-5-isoxazolones and organophosphorus ligands, for use in electroluminescent devices. In the beginning it describes the need for the development of new mixed-ligand systems for the separation of lanthanoids and the development and importance of novel luminescent lanthanoid- β-diketonate complexes for display devices. The syntheses of various para substituted derivatives of 4-aroyl-5-isoxazolones and their characterization by various spectroscopic techniques are described. It also investigate the solvent extraction behaviour of trivalent lanthanoids with 4-aroyl-5-isoxazolones in the presence and absence of various crown ethers such as 18C6, DC18C6, DB18C6 and B18C6. Elemental analysis, IR and H NMR spectral studies are used to understand the interactions of crown ethers with 4-aroyl-5-isoxazolonate complexes of lanthanoids. The synergistic extraction of trivalent lanthanoids with sterically hindered 1-phenyl-3-methyl-4-pivaloyl-5-pyrazolone in the presence of various structurally related crown ethers are studied. The syntheses, characterization and photyphysical properties of Eu3+-4-aroyl-5-isoxazolonate complexes in the presence of Lewis bases like trictylphosphine oxide or triphenylphosphine oxide were studied.

In this thesis, we report our endeavours in the synthesis of a few polycyclic compounds. We were interested in the synthesis of a few bicyclic compounds designed to undergo interesting photochemical transformations including tripletmediated di-π-methane rearrangement and/or competing singlet-mediated electrocyclic reactions. Our target molecules have "inbuilt" structural features which will potentially alter the photochemistry of the substrate under consideration. The present investigation was undertaken to test our hypothesis on selective intramolecular quenching of singlet or triplet excited states of molecules. We adopted Dies-Alder reaction for the synthesis of several of the bicyclic compounds we were interested in. Some of the precursor dienes synthesised by us are capable of undergoing intramolecular cycloaddition reactions as well. So, it was important to delineate the conditions and structural features that will enable a particular molecule to undergo intermolecular and intramolecular Dies-Alder reaction when treated with a suitable dienophile.Though, the main focus of this thesis is on the synthesis of bicyclic and tricyclic systems capable of undergoing di-π-methane rearrangement, in the last chapter of this thesis, we describe our findings on the synthesis of a few dispirocompounds. These systems were encountered as unexpected products in the attempted synthesis of novel dibenzoylalkene-type systems. Consequently, a brief survey on the synthesis and transformations of dibenzoylalkenes is also included as an integral part of this thesis.

A comparative study on the anisole methylation with methanol over lanthanum-promoted Sn02 catalyst and its sulfate-doped analogue is presented. A maximum 2.6-xylenol selectivity of 82% was achieved at 400 degreeC under optimized conditions at an anisole conversion of 65% over lanthanum-promoted Sn02 catalyst. The sulfate modification resulted in the dealkylation of anisole to phenol followed by several unselective side reactions due to the creation of strong acid sites. The activity of lanthanum-modified tin oxide catalysts in the selective formation of 2.6-xylenol is ascribed to the presence of weak Lewis acid sites and comparatively stronger basic sites.

Physico-chemical characterization of DY203/V2O5 systems prepared through wet impregnation method has been carried out using various techniques like EDX, XRD, FTIR. thermal studies, BET surface area, pore volume and pore size distribution analysis. The amount of vanadia incorporated has been found to influence the surface properties of dysprosia. The spectroscopic results combining with X-ray analysis reveal that vanadia species exist predominantly as isolated amorphous vanadyl units along with crystalline dysprosium orthovanadate. Basicity studies have been conducted by adsorption of electron acceptors and acidity and acid strength distribution by temperature programmed desorption of ammonia. Cyclohexanol decomposition has been employed as a chemical probe reaction to examine the effect of vanadia on the acid base property of Dy2O3. Incorporation of vanadia titrates thc Lewis acid and base sites of Dy2O3, while an enhancement of Bronsted acid sites has been noticed. Data have been correlated with the catalytic activity of these oxides towards the vapour phase methylation of phenol

Iron pillared Montmorillonite has been synthesised and it is then wet impregnated with vanadia with different vanadia composition. These catalysts are characterised using conventional techniques such as XRD analysis,FTIR analysis and surface area and pore volume measurements. Acidity is measured using spectrophotometric monitoring of adsorption of perylene, thermogravimetric desorption of 2.6 dimethylpyridine and temperature programmed desorption of ammonia. Activity studies are done in the liquid phase. It has been concluded that Lewis acidic sites are responsible for the benzylation of toluene when the benzylating agent is benzyl chloride while Bronsted acidic sites are responsible when the reagent is benzyl alcohol.

The reaction of aniline with methanol was carried out over Zn1-xNixFe2O4 (x= 0, 0.2, 0.5, 0.8 and 1) type systems in a fixed-bed down-flow reactor. It was observed that systems possessing low ``x'' values are highly selective and active for mono N-alkylation of aniline leading to N-methyl aniline. Selectivity for N-methyl aniline over ZnFe2O4 was more than 99% under the optimized reaction conditions. Even at methanol to aniline molar ratio of 2, the yield of N-methyl aniline was nearly 55.5%, whereas its yield exceeded 67% at the molar ratio of 7. The Lewis acid sites of the catalysts are mainly responsible for the good catalytic performance. Cation distribution in the spinel lattice influences their acido-basic properties, and hence, these factors have been considered as helpful to evaluate the activity and stability of the systems.

A series of ferrites having the general formula Zn1-xCoxFe2O4 (x=0, 0.2, 0.5, 0.8 and 1.0)were prepared by soft chemical route. The materials were characterized by adopting various physico-chemical methods. The reaction of aniline with methanol was studied in a fixed-bed reactor system as a potential source for the production of various methyl anilines. It was observed that systems possessing low ‘ x’ values are highly selective and active for N-monoalkylation of aniline leading to N-methylaniline. Reaction parameters were properly varied to optimize the reaction conditions for obtaining N-methylaniline selectively and in better yield. Among the systems Zn0.8Co0.2Fe2O4 is remarkable due to its very high activity and excellent stability. Under the optimized conditions N-methylaniline selectivity exceeded 98%. Even at a methanol to aniline molar ratio of 2, the yield of N-methylaniline was nearly 50%, whereas its yield exceeded 71% at the molar ratio of 5. ZnFe2O4, though executed better conversion than Zn0.8Co0.2Fe2O4 in the initial period of the run, deactivates quickly as the reaction proceeds. The Lewis acidity of the catalysts is mainly responsible for the good performance. Cation distribution in the spinel lattice influences their acido-basic properties and, hence, these factors have been considered as helpful parameters to evaluate the activity of the systems.

Various compositions of chromium manganese ferrospinels were tested as catalysts for the vapour phase alkylation of aniline with methanol. The samples were prepared by room temperature co-precipitation technique and characterized by various physico-chemical methods. The acidity–basicity determination revealed that the samples possess greater amount of basic sites than acidic sites. All the ferrite samples proved to be selective and active for N-monoalkylation of aniline leading to N-methyl aniline; Cr0.6Mn0.4Fe2O4, Cr0.8Mn0.2Fe2O4 and CrFe2O4 exhibited cent percent selectivity for N-methyl aniline. Neither C-alkylated products nor any other side products were detected for all catalyst samples. The catalytic activity of the samples studied in this reaction is related to their acid–base properties and also on the cation distribution. Under the optimized reaction conditions all the systems showed constant activity for a long duration.

The present work undertakes the preparation and physico-chemical characterisation of iron promoted sulphated zirconia (SZ) with different amounts of iron loading and their application to Friedel-Crafts benzoylation of benzene, toluene and xylene under different experimental conditions, XRD and laser Raman techniques reveal the stabilisation of the tetragonal phase of zirconia and the existence of iron in highly dispersed form as Fe203 on the catalyst surface. The surface acidic properties were determined by ammonia temperature programmed desorption (TPD) and perylene adsorption, The results were supported by the TGA studies after adsorption of pyridine and 2,6-dimethylpyridine (2,6-DMP), Strong Lewis acid sites on the surface, which are evident from TPD and perylene adsorption studies. explain the high catalytic activity of the systems towards benzoylation. The experimental results provide evidence for the truly heterogeneous nature of the reaction. The studies also establish the resistance to deactivation in the metal incorporated sulphated systems.

Ferrospinels of nickel, cobalt and copper and their sulphated analogues were prepared by the room temperature coprecipitation route to yield samples with high surface areas. The intrinsic acidity among the ferrites was found to decrease in the order: cobalt> nickel> copper. Sulphation caused an increase in the number of weak and medium strong acid sites, whereas the strong acid sites were left unaffected. Electron donor studies revealed that copper ferrite has both the highest proportion of strong sites and the lowest proportion of weak basic sites. All the ferrite samples proved to be good catalysts for the benzoy lation of toluene with benzoyl chloride. copper and cobalt ferrites being much more active than nickel ferrite. The catalytic activity for benzoylation was not much influenced by sulphation, but it increased remarkably with calcination temperature of the catalyst. Surface Lewis acid sites, provided by the octahedral cations on the spinel surface, are suggested to be responsible for the catalytic activity for the benzoylation reaction.

The surface acidity and basicity of binary oxides of Zr with Ce and La are determined using a series of Hammet indicators and Ho,,max values are reported. The generation of new acid sites habe been ascribed to the charge imbalance of M1-O-M2 bonds, where M1 and M2 are metal atoms. Both Bronsted and Lewis acid sites contribute to the acidity of the oxides
