The purpose of this paper is to examine the information-seeking behavior of science and social science research scholars, including service effectiveness, satisfaction level on different type of sources and various methods adopted by the scholars for keeping up to dateData were gathered using a questionnaire survey of 200, randomly selected, PhD students of science and social science departments of four universities in Kerala, IndiaAlthough similarities exist between social science and science PhD students with regard to information-seeking behavior, there are significant differences as well. There is a significant difference between science and social science scholars on the perception of the adequacy of print journals and database collection which are very relevant to the research purposes. There is no significant difference between science and social science scholars on the perception of the adequacy of e-journals, the most used source for keeping up to date. The study proved that scholars of both the fields are dissatisfied with the effectiveness of the library in keeping them up to date with latest developments

Information is knowledge, facts or data. For the purpose of enabling the users to assimilate information, it should be repacked. Knowledge becomes information when it is externalized i.e. put in to the process of communication. The effectiveness of communication technology depends how well it provides its clients with information rapidly, economically and authentically. A large number of ICT enabled services including OPAC; e-resources etc. are available in the university library. Studies have been done to find the impact of ICT on different sections of CUSAT library by observing the activities of different sections; discussions with colleagues and visitors; and analyzing the entries in the library records. The results of the studies are presented here in the form of a paper.

Image processing has been a challenging and multidisciplinary research area since decades with continuing improvements in its various branches especially Medical Imaging. The healthcare industry was very much benefited with the advances in Image Processing techniques for the efficient management of large volumes of clinical data. The popularity and growth of Image Processing field attracts researchers from many disciplines including Computer Science and Medical Science due to its applicability to the real world. In the meantime, Computer Science is becoming an important driving force for the further development of Medical Sciences. The objective of this study is to make use of the basic concepts in Medical Image Processing and develop methods and tools for clinicians’ assistance. This work is motivated from clinical applications of digital mammograms and placental sonograms, and uses real medical images for proposing a method intended to assist radiologists in the diagnostic process. The study consists of two domains of Pattern recognition, Classification and Content Based Retrieval. Mammogram images of breast cancer patients and placental images are used for this study. Cancer is a disaster to human race. The accuracy in characterizing images using simplified user friendly Computer Aided Diagnosis techniques helps radiologists in detecting cancers at an early stage. Breast cancer which accounts for the major cause of cancer death in women can be fully cured if detected at an early stage. Studies relating to placental characteristics and abnormalities are important in foetal monitoring. The diagnostic variability in sonographic examination of placenta can be overlooked by detailed placental texture analysis by focusing on placental grading. The work aims on early breast cancer detection and placental maturity analysis. This dissertation is a stepping stone in combing various application domains of healthcare and technology.

Mathematicians who make significant contributions towards development of mathematical science are not getting the recognition they deserve, according to Cusat Vice Chancellor Dr. J. Letha. She was delivering the inaugural address at the International Conference on Semigroups, Algebras and Applications (ICSA 2015) organized by Dept. of Mathematics, Cochin university of Science and Technology on Thursday. Mathematics plays an important role in the development of basic science. The academic community should not delay in accepting and appreciating this, Dr. Letha added. Dr. Godfrey Louis, Dean, Faculty of Science presided over the inaugural function. Prof. P. G. Romeo, Head, Dept. of Mathematics, Prof. John C. Meakin, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, USA, Prof. A. N. Balchand, Syndicate Member, Prof. K. A. Zakkariya, Syndicate Member, Prof. A. R. Rajan, Emeritus Professor, University of Kerala and Prof. A. Vijayakumar, Dept. of Mathematics, Cusat addressed the gathering. Around 50 research papers will be presented at the Conference.Prof. K. S. S. Nambooripad, the internationally famous mathematician with enormous contributions in the field of semigroup theory, who has attained eighty years of age will be felicitated on 18th at 5.00 pm during a function presided over by Dr. K.
