Chemical bath deposition (CBD)is one of the simplest, very convient and probably the cheapest method for thin film preparation. Photovoltaic is the cleanest and the most efficient mode of conversion of energy to electrical power. Silicon is the most popular material in this field. The present study on chemical bath deposited semiconducting copper selenide and iron sulfide thin films useful for photovoltaic applications. Semiconducting thin films prepared by chemical deposition find applications as photo detectors, solar control coatings and solar cells. Copper selenide is a p-type semiconductor that finds application in photovolitics. Several heterojunction systems such as Cu2-xSe/ZnSe (for injection electro luminescence), Cu2Se/AgInSe2 and Cu2Se/Si (for photodiodes), Cu2-xSe/CdS, Cu2-xSe/CdSe, CuxSe/InP and Cu2-xSe/Si for solar cells are reported. A maximum efficiency of 8.3% was achieved for the Cu2-xSe/Si cell, various preparation techniques are used for copper selenide like vacuum evaporation, direct reaction, electrodeposition and CBD. Instability of the as-prepared films was investigation and is accounted as mainly due to deviation from stoichiometry and the formation of iron oxide impurity. A sulphur annealing chamber was designed and fabricated for this work. These samples wee also analysed using optical absorption technique, XPS (X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy) and XRD.(X-Ray Diffraction). The pyrite films obtained by CBD technique showed amorphous nature and the electrical studies carried out showed the films to be of high resistive nature. Future work possible in the material of iron pyrite includes sulphur annealing of the non-stochiometric iron pyrite CBD thin films in the absence of atmospheric oxygen

The current water treatment technology is oriented towards the removal of contaminants, mostly organic compounds, by activated carbon. Activated carbons are classified as Granular Activated Carbons (GAC) and Powdered Activated Carbons (PAC) on the basis of the particle size of the carbon granules. Powdered carbons are generally less expensive than granular carbon, operating costs with powdered carbon could be lower. Though powdered activated carbon has many advantages over granular carbon, its application in large-scale separation process is limited by difficulty in recovery and regeneration. Deposition of magnetic iron oxide on carbon particles provides a convenient way of recovering the spent carbon from process water. The study deals with the preparation and physico-chemical characterization of magnetic iron oxide loaded activated carbons. The evaluation of absorption properties of magnetic iron oxide loaded activated carbon composites. The target molecules studied were phenol, p-nitro phenol and methylene blue. The feasibility of magnetic separation of iron oxide loaded activated carbons were studied and described in this thesis.

Iron pillared Montmorillonite has been synthesised and it is then wet impregnated with vanadia with different vanadia composition. These catalysts are characterised using conventional techniques such as XRD analysis,FTIR analysis and surface area and pore volume measurements. Acidity is measured using spectrophotometric monitoring of adsorption of perylene, thermogravimetric desorption of 2.6 dimethylpyridine and temperature programmed desorption of ammonia. Activity studies are done in the liquid phase. It has been concluded that Lewis acidic sites are responsible for the benzylation of toluene when the benzylating agent is benzyl chloride while Bronsted acidic sites are responsible when the reagent is benzyl alcohol.

The present work undertakes the preparation and physico-chemical characterisation of iron promoted sulphated zirconia (SZ) with different amounts of iron loading and their application to Friedel-Crafts benzoylation of benzene, toluene and xylene under different experimental conditions, XRD and laser Raman techniques reveal the stabilisation of the tetragonal phase of zirconia and the existence of iron in highly dispersed form as Fe203 on the catalyst surface. The surface acidic properties were determined by ammonia temperature programmed desorption (TPD) and perylene adsorption, The results were supported by the TGA studies after adsorption of pyridine and 2,6-dimethylpyridine (2,6-DMP), Strong Lewis acid sites on the surface, which are evident from TPD and perylene adsorption studies. explain the high catalytic activity of the systems towards benzoylation. The experimental results provide evidence for the truly heterogeneous nature of the reaction. The studies also establish the resistance to deactivation in the metal incorporated sulphated systems.

The primary aim of these investigations was to probe the elecnuchemical and material science aspects of some selected metal phthalocyanines(MPcs).Metal phthalocyanines are characterised by a unique planar molecular structure. As a single class of compounds they have been the subject of ever increasing number of physicochemical and technological investigations. During the last two decades the literature on these compounds was flooded by an outpour of original publications and patents. Almost every branch of materials science has benefited by their application-swface coating, printing, electrophotography, photoelectrochemistry, electronics and medicine to name a few.The present study was confined to the electrical and electrochemical properties of cobalt, nickel, zinc. iron and copper phthalocyanines. The use of soluble Pes as corrosion inhibitor for aluminium was also investigated. In the introductory section of the thesis, the work done so far on MPcs is reviewed. In this review emphasis is given to their general methods of synthesis and the physicochemical properties. In phthalocyanine chemistry one of the formidable tasks is the isolation of singular species. In the second chapter the methods of synthesis and purification are presented with necessary experimental details. The studies on plasma modified films of CoPe, FePc, ZnPc. NiPc and CuPc are also presented.Modification of electron transfer process by such films for reversible redox systems is taken as the criterion to establish enhanced electrocatalytic activity.Metal phthalocyanines are p- type semiconductors and the conductivity is enhanced by doping with iodine. The effect of doping on the activation energy of the conduction process is evaluated by measuring the temperature dependent variation of conductivity. Effect of thennal treatment on iodine doped CoPc is investigated by DSC,magnetic susceptibility, IR, ESR and electronic spectra. The elecnucatalytic activity of such doped materials was probed by cyclic voltammetry. The electron transfer mediation characteristics of MPc films depend on the film thickness. The influence of reducing the effective thickness of the MPc film by dispersing it into a conductive polymeric matrix was investigated. Tetrasulphonated cobalt phthalocyanine (CoTSP) was electrostatically immobilised into polyaniline and poly(o-toluidine) under varied conditions. The studies on corrosion inhibition of aluminium by CoTSP and CuTSP and By virtue of their anionic character they are soluble in water and are strongly adsorbed on aluminium. Hence they can act as corrosion inhibitors. CoTSP is also known to catalyze the reduction of dioxygen. This reaction can accelerate the anodic dissolution of metal as a complementary reaction. The influence of these conflicting properties of CoTSP on the corrosion of aluminium was studied and compared with those of CuTSP.In the course of these investigations a number of gadgets like cell for measuring the electrical conductivity of solids under non-isothermal conditions, low power rf oscillator and a rotating disc electrode were fabricated.

The temperate, filamentous phage ФMV -5 isolated from Mangalavanam mangrove of Kochi, using the environmental strain of Vibrio sp. MV-5 shares many similar properties with other marine phage isolates, while also remaining unique. The study has revealed that the interaction of temperate phages and the microbial population in the marine environment may contribute significantly to microbial genetic diversity and composition by conversion and transduction and which requires greater study.Prophages contribute a substantial share of the mobile DNA of their bacterial hosts and seem to influence the short-term evolution of pathogenic bacteria. Automated methods for systematic investigation of prophages and other mobile DNA elements in the available bacterial genome sequences will be necessary to understand their role in bacterial genome evolution. In the past, phages were mainly investigated as the simplest model systems in molecular biology. Now it is increasingly realized that phage research will be instrumental in the understanding of bacterial abundance in the environment. One can predict that phage research will impact diverse areas such as geochemistry and medicine. Success will largely depend on integrative multidisciplinary approaches in this field. Clearly, further studies are required to understand how vibriophages interact with Vibrios to promote this organism's acquisition of the critical genes which alter its virulence or adaptation to its environmental niche. It is evident from this study and comparison with those reports cited above that vibriophage ФMV-5 is a previously unreported bacteriophage. It is recommended that the minimum requirement for reporting a new phage should be novel morphological markers and a description of host range, both of which have been achieved in this study.
