PVC Supported Liquid Membrane and Carbon Paste Potentiometric Sensors Incorporating a Mn(III)-Porphyrin for the Direct Determination of Undissociated Paracetamol

PVC supported liquid membrane and carbon paste potentiometric sensors incorporating an Mn(III)-porphyrin complex as a neutral host molecule were developed for the determination of paracetamol. The measurements were carried out in solution at pH 5.5. Under such conditions paracetamol exists as a neutral molecule. The mechanism of molecular recognition between the Mn(III)-porphyrin and paracetamol, leading to potentiometric signal generation, is discussed.The sensitivity and selectivity toward paracetamol of carbon paste and polymeric liquid membrane electrodes incorporating an Mn(III)-porphyrin host were compared. The applicability of these sensors to the direct determination of paracetamol was checked by performing a recovery test in human plasma.

Sympathetic Stimulation and Hypertension in the Pyridoxine-Deficient Adult Rat

Pyridoxal phosphate is the coenzyme of various decarboxylases involved in the formation of monoamine neurotransmitters such as y-aminobutyric acid , serotonin , dopamine, and norepinephrine . Adult male Sprague-Dawley rats placed on a pyridoxine -deficient diet for 8 weeks showed significant hypertension compared with pyridoxine -supplemented controls . Hypothalamic contents of pyridoxal phosphate , y-aminobutyric acid, and serotonin in the pyridoxine - deficient rats were significantly lower than those in pyridoxine -supplemented controls . Hypertension was associated with sympathetic stimulation . Treatment of pyridoxine-deficient rats with a single dose of pyridoxine (10 mg/kg body weight) reversed the blood pressure to normal levels within 24 hours, with concomitant restorations of hypothalamic serotonin and y-aminobutyric acid as well as the return of plasma norepinephrine and epinephrine to normal levels . Also, pyridoxine treatment reversed the hypothalamic hypothyroidism observed in pyridoxine -deficient rats . These results indicate an association between pyridoxine deficiency and sympathetic stimulation leading to hypertension.

Farm Poverty in Kerala: A case study of Alappuzha, Trissur, Palakkad and Wayanad

The present study was an attempt to analytically approach the problem of farm poverty in Kerala from an entirely different angle by incorporating an independently developed and reformulated definition of poverty line in terms of physical units of operational holdings (say, acre). The entire discussion on farm poverty emerged out of proper co-ordination of two important factors popularly considered as the distinct features of Ian sector, viz, unparalleled proliferation of marginal holdings and the unique and emirable position enjoyed by the state in terms of farm productivity. This brief analytical study on farm poverty, conducted in the light of inter regional variations in farm productivity tried to highlight various grave issues deserving thorough introspection.

Polymer-Plastics Technology and Engineering

Fine (approximately 18 nm) particles of nickel ferrite were synthesized by the sol-gel technique, and their structural properties were evaluated by X-ray diffraction. Neoprene-based rubber ferrite composites were prepared by incorporating these nickel ferrite powders in the rubber matrix according to a specific recipe. The cure characteristics were analyzed, and the samples were molded into particular shapes whose properties were determined according to ASTM standards. Magnetization studies were carried out using a Vibrating Sample Magnetometer. This study indicates that neoprene rubber-based flexible magnets with desired magnetic properties and appropriate mechanical properties can be prepared by incorporating an adequate amount of nanoscale nickel ferrite particles within the rubber matrix
