Veuruenducrim lri v j p .rim, deficienc:v. NEUROSCI BIOBEHAV REV 12(3/4) 189-193. 1988.- Dihydroxyphenylalanine decarboxvlase and 5-hydroxytryptophan decarboxvlase respectively have high and low affinities for pyridoxal phosphate. In the pyridoxinedeficient animal. hypothalamic serotonin content is significantly reduced without any change in catecholamine levels. Hypothalamic neurotransmitters affect the hvpothalamo-pituitary-end organ axes. Specifically, the decrease in hypothalamic serotonin in the pyridoxine-deficient rat results in tertiary hypothyroidism. In addition. pineal function is affected in deficient animals due to decreased synthesis of melatonin.

Pyridoxal phosphate (PLP) is the coenzyme of various decarboxylases involved in the formation of monoamine urotransmitters such as y-aminobulyric acid (GAE3A), serotonin (5-HT) and dopamine. 1-lowever; in the pyridoxine-deficient rats GABA and 5-HT are decreased in various brain areas including the hypothalamus, with no change in the catecholamine levels. Serotonin and GABA are known to be involved in blood pressure control mechanisms. In this study adult Sprague-Dawley rats placed on a pyridoxine-deficient diet for 8 weeks showed significant hypertension compared with pyridoxine-supplemented controls. This was associated with a general sympathetic stimulation. Treatment of deficient rats with a single dose of pyridoxine (10 mg/kg body weight) reversed the blood pressure to normal levels within 24 h, with concomitant restoration of hypothalamic 5-HT and GABA, as well as the return of plasma norepinephrine to nornr;l levels. The results indicate that there is a cause-and-effect relationship between pyridoxine deficiency and hypertension.

The high-affinity bindings of [3H]-5-hydroxytryptamine to serotonin S-1 receptors, [3H]-ketanserin to serotonin S-2 receptors in the cerebral cortex, [3H]- fluphenazine to dopamine D-1 receptors, and [3H]-spiroperidol to dopamine D-2 receptors in the corpus striatum were studied in pyridoxine-deficient rats and compared to pyridoxine-supplemented controls. There was a significant increase in the maximal binding (Bmax) of serotonin S-1 and S-2 receptors with a significant decrease in their binding affinities (Kd). However, there were no significant changes either in the maximal binding or binding affinity of striatal dopamine D- 1 and D-2 receptors. Receptor sensitivity seems to correlate negatively with the corresponding neurotransmitter concentrations in the pyridoxine-deficient rats.

The present study Molecular genetic characterization of endemic yellow catfish ,generated an important information on the genetic variation and stock structure of the endangered yellow catfish(Horabagrus brachysoma) endemic to the western Ghats. Three genetically discrete stocks of the species have been identified for the first time using allozymes, RAPD(Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA) and microsatelite markers and it is a significant step towards realizing the goal of management of fishery and conservation of the yellow catfish populations in the rivers of the Western Ghats region. In conclusion genetic markers were found to be powerful tools to analyze the population genetic structure of the yellow catfish. Geographic isolation by land distance, inbreading as a result of over-exploitation etc are some reasons for the genetic differenciation between the pairs and deficiency of hetrozygosity revealed by the two co dominant markers, allozyme, and microsatelites.the study emphasizes the need for stock-wise, propagation assisted-rehabilitation of the natural populations yellow catfish

The thesis deals with the results of an investigation on the "BIOCHEMICAL GENETICS OF MUGIL CEPHALUS" from Cochin, Madras and Orissa. It is presented under the following major headings: Introduction, Review of Literature, Materials and Methods, Results, Discussions, Conclusions, Recommendations, Summary and References. The introduction gives a brief account of historical and modern back ground on the stock concept in fisheries research and management, followed by the importance and potential role of biochemical genetics in the identification of natural units of fisheries management. In the review of literature published reports relevant to biochemical genetics with special reference to that of general proteins and enzyme systems of fish populations were considered. A detailed account of the source of experimental specimens, mode of collection, transportation, sample extraction, gel preparation/gel electrophoresis, buffer systems, staining procedures of proteins/enzymes, standardization of experiments, interpretation of electrophoretic data using basic formulae etc. are given in the materials and methods section. Four important conclusions were drawn on the basis of the results of the present investigation. Three recommendations were also made on the basis of evaluation of the results.

‘Biochemical genetics of selected commercially important penaeid prawns‘ dloted was carried out by collecting samples from different important fishing ceatres of India and the practical work was carried out in the Research Centre of CMFRI laboratories attached with those places. On the whole, in crustacea little importance has been given so far in finding out tin genetic characteristics of different species, genetic variation within and between species and ontogenetic variations in lobsters, prawns and other crustaceans. Prawn is caunercially important group where very little attention had been given so far to find out the racial divergence which may exist in cufferent species. with the increased foreign exchange earning and consequent indiscriminate over exploitation of existing resources of prawns resulting in depletion of the marine rescurces, alternative ways and augmenting production has become essential. In this connection genetic manipulation of the broodstock will surely bring about the heterogenous characters to multiply production. In order to understand racial fragmentation of sane of the coumercially important prawns such as Pengeus ggdicus and Parggenagsis sgliferg the isozyme studies were carried out. Qatogenetic variation of g. indicus showed stage specific electrophoretic variation. Inter species variation studies was carried out for the closely aligned Penaeus species
