Two simple and sensitive spectrophotometric methods(A and B) in the visible region have been developed for the determination of cefotaxime sodium (DFTS) in bulk and in dosage forms. Method A is based on the reaction of CFTS with nitrous acid under alkaline conditions to form a stable violet colored chromogen with absorption maximum of 560 nm and method B is based on the reaction of CFTS with1,10-phenanthroline and ferric chloride to form a red colored chromogen with the absorption maximum of 520 mm.The color obeyed Beer’s law in the concentration range of 100-500 µg/ml for method A and 1.6-16 µg/ml for method B, respectively. When pharmaceutical preparations containing CFTS were analysed, the results obtained by the proposed methods are in good agreement with the labeled amounts and are comparable with the results obtained using a UV spectrophotometric method.

Optical fiber based laser induced fluorescence (LIF) measurements were carried out using Rhodamine B to analyze two different species of bacteria , a Gram-positive bacteria namely Bacillus .cmithii , and fibrin alginolvticus, a Gram-' negative bacteria . The fiber sensor was clearly able to distinguish between the two species of bacteria . Quenching effect of the dye Rhodamine B by Bacillus smitltii was observed . The effect of dye on the samples was also studied in detail.

Polyaniline thin films were prepared by ac plasma polymerization technique. Capacitance, dielectric loss, dielectric constant and ac conductivity of these films were investigated in the frequency range from 100 Hz to 1MHz and in the temperature range from 300 to 373 K. Capacitance and dielectric loss decreased with frequency and increased with temperature. This type of behaviour was found to be in good agreement with an existing model. The ac conductivity σ(ω) was found to vary as ωs with the index s 1. Annealing of polyaniline thin films in high vacuum at 373K for 1 h was found to reduce the dielectric loss. FTIR studies reveal that the aromatic ring is retained in the polyaniline thin films, which enhances the thermal stability of the polymer films

Nanoparticles of manganese ferrite were prepared by the chemical co-precipitation technique. The dielectric parameters, namely, real and imaginary dielectric permittivity (ε and ε ), ac conductivity (σac) and dielectric loss tangent (tan δ), were measured in the frequency range of 100 kHz–8MHz at different temperatures. The variations of dielectric dispersion (ε ) and dielectric absorption (ε ) with frequency and temperature were also investigated. The variation of dielectric permittivity with frequency and temperature followed the Maxwell–Wagner model based on interfacial polarization in consonance with Koops phenomenological theory. The dielectric loss tangent and hence ε exhibited a relaxation at certain frequencies and at relatively higher temperatures. The dispersion of dielectric permittivity and broadening of the dielectric absorption suggest the possibility of a distribution of relaxation time and the existence of multiple equilibrium states in manganese ferrite. The activation energy estimated from the dielectric relaxation is found to be high and is characteristic of polaron conduction in the nanosized manganese ferrite. The ac conductivity followed a power law dependence σac = Bωn typical of charge transport assisted by a hopping or tunnelling process. The observed minimum in the temperature dependence of the frequency exponent n strongly suggests that tunnelling of the large polarons is the dominant transport process

Polyaniline and oligomeric cobalt phthalocyanine are blended in different proportions by chemical methods. These blends are characterised by spectroscopic methods and dielectric measurements. Dielectric studies on the conducting polymer blends are carried out in the frequency range of 100 kHz to 5MHz from room temperature (300 K) to 373 K. Dielectric permittivity and dielectric loss of these blends are explained on the basis of interfacial polarisation. From the dielectric permittivity studies, ac conductivity of the samples were calculated and the results are correlated. In order to understand the exact conduction mechanism of the samples, dc electrical conductivity of the blends is carried out in the temperature range of 70–300 K. By applying Mott’s theory, it is found that the conducting polymer composites obey a 3D variable range hopping mechanism. The values of Mott’s temperature (T0), density of states at the Fermi energy (N(EF)), range of hopping (R) and hopping energy (W) for the composites are calculated and presented
