This Thesis deals with the fabrication and characterization of novel all-fiber components for access networks. All fiber components offer distinctive advantages due to low forward and backward losses, epoxy free optical path and high power handling. A novel fabrication method for monolithic 1x4 couplers, which are vital components in distributed passive optical networks, is realized. The fabrication method differs from conventional structures with a symmetric coupling profile and hence offers ultra wideband performance and easy process control. New structure for 1x4 couplers, by fusing five fibers is proposed to achieve high uniformity, which gives equivalent uniformity performance to 1x4 planar lightwave splitters, isolation in fused fiber WDM is improved with integration of long period gratings. Packaging techniques of fused couplers are analyzed for long term stability.

In recent years, photonics has emerged as an essential technology related to such diverse fields like laser technology, fiber optics, communication, optical signal processing, computing, entertainment, consumer electronics etc.Availabilities of semiconductor lasers and low loss fibers have also revolutionized the field of sensor technology including telemetry. There exist fiber optic sensors which are sensitive, reliable.light weight and accurate devices which find applications in wide range of areas like biomedicine, aviation, surgery, pollution monitoring etc.,apart from areas in basic sciences. The present thesis deals with the design, fabrication and characterization of a variety of cost effective and sensitive fiber optic sensors for the trace detetction of certain environment pollutants in air and water. The sensor design is carried out using the techniques like evanescent waves, micro bending and long period gratings.

We propose and demonstrate a new technique for evanescent wave chemical sensing by writing long period gratings in a bare multimode plastic clad silica fiber. The sensing length of the present sensor is only 10 mm, but is as sensitive as a conventional unclad evanescent wave sensor having about 100 mm sensing length. The minimum measurable concentration of the sensor reported here is 10 nmol/l and the operating range is more than 4 orders of magnitude. Moreover, the detection is carried out in two independent detection configurations viz., bright field detection scheme that detects the core-mode power and dark field detection scheme that detects the cladding mode power. The use of such a double detection scheme definitely enhances the reliability and accuracy of the results. Furthermore, the cladding of the present fiber need not be removed as done in conventional evanescent wave fiber sensors.
