The electron donating properties of Ce02 and its mixed oxides with alumina have been determined from the studies of adsorption of electron acceptors of various electron affinities on the surface of these oxides. The catalytic activity of these oxides towards some reactions such as oxidation of alcohols and reduction of ketones have been Correlated with their surface electrondonor properties. The surface acidity/basicity of these oxides have also been determined by titration method using a set of Hammett indicators.

The electron donating properties of La2O3 activated at 300, 500 and 800·C and its mixed oxides with alumina are reported from the studies on adsorption of electron acceptors of varying electron affinity on La203. The electron acceptors with their electron affinity values given in parenthesis are: 7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane (2.84 eV), 2,3,5,6-tetrachloro-I,4-benzoquinone (2.40 eV) and p-dinitrobenzene(l.77eV). The basicity of the oxide has been determined by titration with n-butylamine and Ho.max values are reported. The limit of electron transfer from the oxide to the electron acceptor is between 2.40 and 1.77 eV. It is observed that La203 promotes the surface electron properties of alumina without changing its limit of electron transfer.

The electron donor properties of Nd2O3 activated at 300, 500 and 800°C were investigated through studies on the adsorption of electron acceptors of various electron affinities - 7, 7, 8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane (2.84 eV). 2, 3, 5, 6-tetrachloro-l , 4-benzoquinone (2.40 eV). p-dinitrobenzene (1.77 eV), and m-dinitrobenzene (1.26 eV) in solvents acetonitrile and 1, 4-dioxan. The extent of electron transfer during adsorption has been found from magnetic measurements and electronic spectral data. The corresponding data on mixed oxides of neodymium and aluminium are reported for various. compositions. The acid-base properties of catalysts were also determined using a set of Hammett indicators.

Acid/base strength distribution of Y2O3 and its mixed oxides with alumina catalysts are measured on Hammett acidity function scale and expressed in terms of H0max value. Basicity of Y2O3 increases with increase in activation temperature and for mixed oxides the basicity increases with increase in concentration of Y2O3, in the catalyst.

The limit of electron transfer in electron affinity from the oxide surface to the electron acceptor (EA) are reported from the adsorption of EA on DY203, mixed oxides of DY203 with alumina and mixed oxides of Y203 with y-alumina. The extent of electron transfer is understood from magnetic measurements.

Lanthanum oxide, La2O3 has been found to be an effective catalyst for the liquid phase reduction of cyclohexanone. The catalytic activities of La2O3 activated at 300, 500 and 800·C and its mixed oxides with alumina for the reduction of cyclohexanone with 2-propanol have been determined and the data parallel that of the electron donating properties of the catalysts. The electron donating properties of the catalysts have been determined from the adsorption of electron acceptors of different electron affinities on the surface of these oxides.

Use of inert supports have been recommended for SSF in on ar to overcome its inherent problems and efforts are being made to search for newer and better materials to act as inert solid supports lidoo et al, 1982; Zhu et al, 1994).In the present study an attempt is made to produce L-glutaminase, which is industrially and therapeutically impo rtant, from marine bacteria under solid state fermentation using natura.l. inert and mixed substrates with a view to develop an ideal bioprocess for its large scale production.

Alkylation of phenol with methanol has been carried out over Sn-La and Sn-Sm mixed oxides of varying compositions at 623 K in a vapour phase flow reactor. It is found that the product selectivity is greatly influenced by the acid-base properties of the catalysts. Ortho-cresol formation is favoured over catalysts with weak acid sites whereas formation of 2,6-xylenol occurs in the presence of stronger acid sites. The cyclohexanol decomposition reaction and titrimetric method using Hammett indicators have been employed to elucidate the acid-base properties of the catalysts.

A comparative study of acid-base properties and catalytic activity of Sn-La and Sn-Sm mixed oxides and their corresponding sulfate modified analogues are reported in this thesis. The catalytic activity and product selectivity in the decomposition of alcohols are correlated with the acid-base and redox properties of the catalyst systems under study The effect of catalyst preparation, pretreatment and various reaction parameters on the catalytic activity of sulfate modified oxides is investigated in the oxidative dehydrogenation reactions The experimental conditions are optimised to synthesise industrially important organic chemicals viz. 2,6 xylenol, o-cresol, N-methylanilne and N,N-dimethylaniline employing the mixed oxide systems. The effect of sulfate treatment on the catalytic activity of these systems in the alkylation reactions of phenol, anisole and aniline is also investigated and the merits and demerits of sulfate treatment are highlighted.

Researches are always in quest for finding innovative methods for ground improvement using sustainable and environmental friendly solutions. Theproduction of large quantity of biowastes all over the world faces serious problems of handling and disposal. Coir pith is a biowaste from coir industry and sugarcane baggase is another biowaste obtained after extractingjuice from sugar cane. So the present study is an investigation into the effect of coir pith and sugarcane baggase on some geotechnical properties of red earth. The investigation includes study on variation of properties such as O.M.C, maximum dry density, C.B.R. values, unconfined compressive strength and permeability when these materials are included in soil. Several conclusions are arrived at, on the basis of the experiments conducted and it may be helpful for predicting the behavior of such soil matrix
