The characteristics and stability of natural actomyosin (NAM) from rohu (Labeo rohita), catla (Catla catla) and mrigal (Cirrhinus mrigala) were investigated. The total extractable actomyosin (AM) was higher (7.60mgml−1) in the case of rohu compared with that from catla and mrigal (5mgml−1). Although the specific AM ATPase activity was similar (0.43–0.5 μmolPmin−1 mgP−1) among the three species, the total ATPase activity was lower in mrigal (25 μmol g−1 meat) compared with the other species (37 μmol g−1 meat). The inactivation rate constants (kd) of AM Ca ATPase activity showed differences in the stabilities of actomyosin among these fish, the actomyosin from catla being least stable. The NAM from these species was stable up to 20 ◦C at pH 7.0. Catla AM became unstable at 30 ◦C, while rohu and mrigal AM could withstand up to 45 ◦C. The thermal denaturation with respect to solubility, turbidity, ATPase activity, sulphhydryl group and surface hydrophobicity showed noticeable changes at around these temperatures

To elucidate the effect of washing, on flesh components, mrigal flesh was washed through one, two and three washing cycles. Washing resulted in absorption of water (1-3%) and loss of fat (49%). 35% loss of soluble protein (SP) was noticed in the first washing itself and the loss is almost equally shared by the sarcoplasmic (18% of SP) and the myofibrillar proteins (17% of SP). The subsequent washings removed small portions of water-soluble sarcoplasmic proteins resulting in the concentration of myofibrillar proteins. 73% of the soluble protein was retained in the flesh after three washing cycles. The protein had undergone marginal conformational changes as reflected by the decrease in the actomyosin Ca super(2+) ATPase activity The rheological properties of the washed flesh were, however, significantly better than that of the unwashed mince

The effect of residual cations in rare earth metal modified faujasite–Y zeolite has been monitored using magic angle spinning NMR spectral analysis and catalytic activity studies. The second metal ions being used are Na+, K+ and Mg+. From a comparison of the spectra of different samples, it is concluded that potassium and magnesium exchange causes a greater downfield shift in the 29Si NMR peaks. Also, lanthanum exchanged samples show migration behavior from large cages to small cages, which causes the redistribution of second counter cations. It is also observed that Mg2+ causes the most effective migration of lanthanum ions due to its greater charge. The prepared systems were effectively employed for the alkylation of benzene with 1-octene in the vapor phase. From the deactivation studies it is observed that the as-exchanged zeolites possess better stability towards reaction condition over the pure HFAU zeolite.

Moderate pyridoxine deficiency in adult male Sprague-Dawley rats results in significant hypertension, associated with a general sympathetic stimulation , including an increase in the turnover of norepinephrine in the heart. Treatment of these rats with pyridoxine reversed blood pressure to normal within 24 h. Treatment of pyridoxine-deficient rats with clonidine or x-methyl dihydroxyphenylalanine (x-methyl DOPA) also reduced the blood pressure of these animals to normal . There was also a significant increase in the Bma, of high and low affinity [3H]p-amino-clonidine binding to crude synaptosomal membrane preparations of the brain stem of deficient rats indicating chronic underexposure of)(, adrenoreceptors to endogenous norepinephrin.

CoMo/gama-Al2O3 catalysts for hydrodesulphurisation activity were prepared by making use of the molecular designed dispersion (MDD) method. Molybdenum and cobalt pyrrolidine-N-carbodithioate (Pydtc) complexes were used for the incorporation of metals on the support. The catalysts were characterized by elemental analysis, low temperature oxygen chemisorption, temperature programmed reduction (TPR) and laser Raman spectroscopy. The hydrodesulphurisation activity of all the catalysts were carried out and results were compared with those of the catalysts prepared through the conventional method. Higher molybdenum dispersion, smaller molybdenum clusters, lower reduction temperature of catalyst and better hydrodesulphurisation activity were observed for the catalysts prepared through the MDD method

Ruthenium(III) complexes of the Schiff bases formed by the condensation of polymer bound aldehyde and the amines, such as 1,2-phenylenediamine (PS-opd), 2-aminophenol (PS-ap), and 2-aminobenzimidazole (PS-ab) have been prepared. The magnetic moment, EPR and electronic spectra suggest an octahedral structure for the complexes. The complexes of PS-opd, PS-ap, and PS-ab have been assigned the formula [PS-opdRuCl3(H2O)], [PS-apRuCl2(H2O)2], [PS-ab- RuCl3(H2O)2], respectively. These complexes catalyze oxidation of catechol using H2O2 selectively to o-benzoquinone. The catalytic activity of the complexes is in the order [PS-ab- RuCl3(H2O)2] . [PS-opdRuCl3(H2O)] [PS-apRuCl2(H2O)2]. Mechanism of the catalytic oxidation of catechol by ruthenium( III) complex is suggested to take place through the formation of a ruthenium(II) complex and its subsequent oxidation by H2O2 to the ruthenium(III) complex.

A series of nonelectrolytic lanthanide(III) complexes, [ ML 2 Cl 3 ] · 2 H 2 O, where M is lanthanum(III), praseodymium(III), neodymium(III), samarium(III), gadolinium(III), terbium(III), dysprosium(III), and yttrium(III), containing sulfamethoxazole ligand (L) are prepared. The structure and bonding of the ligand are studied by elemental analysis, magnetic susceptibility measurements, IR, 1 H NMR, TG / DTA , X-ray diffraction studies, and electronic spectra of the complexes. The stereochemistry around the metal ions is a monocapped trigonal prism in which four of the coordination sites are occupied by two each from two chelating ligands, sulfonyl oxygen, and nitrogen of the amide group and the remaining three positions are occupied by three chlorines. The ligand and the new complexes were tested in vitro to evaluate their activity against the bacteria Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus.

The present study is an attempt to understand the physiological responses of a freshwater gastropod, in terms of haematological parameters, in normal conditions as well as in various natural and man made altered conditions of the environment.Pila virens, a freshwater prosobranch, commonly found in paddy fields, ponds, and streams of Kerala is selected as the test animal for the present investigation. Various haemolymph constituents such as total carbohydrate, glycogen, total protein, total lipid, urea, ammonia, sodium, potasium, calcium, and chloride which are directly involved in the control and maintenance of different physiological systems, were analysed in the present study. Selected haematological parameters like total haemocyte number, and packed cell volume were also determined. Besides , the activity pattern of selected haemolymph enzymes such as acid phosphatase (ACP), alkaline phosphatase (ALP),Glutamate-oxaloacetate transaminase (GOT), and glutamate-pyruvate transaminase (GPT), all having diagnostic value in terms of internal defence system and metabolism of the organism, were also studied.

The pillared montmorillonite has been prepared by exchanging Na+ in the interlayer of montmorillonite with Al hydroxy cation followed by calcination. Pillared clays are also prepared after exchanging Na' ions with Ce, La, Sm-ions and then pillarcd with aluminium oxides, The surface characterisation of the prepared catalysts has been done using XRD and surface area measurements. To probe the acidic property of the system, temperature programmed desorption (TPD) of NH, has been done. Toluene alkylation by benzyl chloride has been carried out for the evaluation of catalytic activity. The most active system is found to be mixed Al/Zr pillarcd montrnorillonite.

The surface acidity/ basicity of TiO2 (rutile) and its sulphate modified form have been determined by titration method using Hammett indicators after activation at different temperatures. The electron donating properties of these oxides are also studied from the adsorption of electron acceptors of different electron affinity values. The data have been correlated with the catalytic activity of these oxides towards esterification of acetic acid using n-butanol, reduction of cyclohexanone in isopropanol and oxidation of cyclohexanol in benzophenone. Catalytic activity for esterification and oxidation reaction parallels the acidity while that for reduction reaction parallels the basicity of these oxides.
