Design and development of a new feed -horn antenna with low sidelobe levels is reported . The E-walls of this antenna are fabricated with low -loss dielectric substrate , periodically loaded with thin conducting strips . The antenna is found to be simulating the radiation characteristics of metallic corrugated horns . This can be an ideal substitute for metallic corrugated horns with added advantages like light -weight and low production cost.

The impedance bandwidth of a high permittivity cylindrical dielectric resonator antenna excited by a micro strip line was significantly improved by modifying the feed geometry. The 10 dB return loss bandwidth is enhanced from 12 to 26% without much affecting the gain and other radiation properties of the antenna. Good agreement has been observed between the predicted and measured results
Loss characterization in rhodamine 6G doped polymer film waveguide by side illumination fluorescence
Resumo:
We report the position dependent tuning of fluorescence emission from rhodamine 6G doped polymethylmethacrylate film waveguide using a side illumination technique. The transmitted fluorescence as a function of the distance from the point of illumination is measured by translating the waveguide horizontally across a monochromatic light source. This technique has been utilized to characterize the optical loss in dye doped waveguides. We observe that the optical loss coefficients for shorter and longer distances of propagation through the dye doped waveguide are different. At longer distance of propagation a decrease in optical loss coefficient is observed

The thesis is the outcome of the experimental and theoretical investigations on a new compact drum-shaped microstrip antenna. A new compact antenna suitable for personal communication system(PCS), Global position System(GPS) and array applications is developed and analysed. The generalised cavity model and spatial fourier transform technique are suitably modified for the analysis of the antenna. The predicted results are compared with experimental results and excellent agreement is observed. The experimental work done by the author in related fields are incorporated as three appendices in this thesis. A single feed dual frequency microstrip antenne is presented in appendix A.Appendix B describes a new broadband dual frequeny microstrip antenna. The bandwidth enhancement effect of microstrip antennas through dielectric resonator loading is demonstarted in Appendix C.

Organic nonlinear optical single crystals of Methyl para-Hydroxy Benzoate (MHB) have been grown using gel-solution technique. These crystals are cut along z-axis and are bombarded with Ag14+ ions of energy 100 MeV. The results show an increase in refractive index at the ion irradiated region. The dielectric constant of the irradiated crystal is increased more than 15 times compared to that of a nonirradiated crystal. The result of these changes and comparative study of second harmonic generation (SHG) efficiency before and after irradiation is discussed.

The thesis is the outcome of the exhaustive theoretical and experimental investigations performed on Printed Monopole Antennas loaded with different geometries .The work presented in this thesis describes the development of a 3D- FDTD(Finite Difference Time Domain) Modeller using MATLAB for the numerical computation of the radiation characteristics of the antenna. The predicted results are verified experimentally and also through simulation using Ansoft HFSS.The effect of top loading of the monopole with different geometries ,the dimensions of the loading patch and ground plane and the material parameters of the dielectric substrate upon the radiation performance of the antenna is studied in detail. Optimized Printed Monopole antennas suitable for Ultra Wide Band (UWB) applications have been developed.

In this thesis, the author proposes a new geometry DR antenna-the Hexagonal Dielectric Resonator Antenna(HDRA)-capable of multiple frequency operation on a single feed of excitation. This avoids the conventional use of miniaturizes the structure. The properties of the HDRA on microstrip as well as coaxial feeding have been studied. The analysis of radiation characteristics indicates a gain comparable with other shapes. The antenna is capable of providing efficiency around 98%.The simulation using HFSS also yields results in conformity with the experimental results.Mode analysis is carried out and the modes are identified. The determination of the reflection characteristics through theoretical analysis using FDTD validates the multifrequency operation of the antenna,The antenna finds application in DCT,PCS and WLAN bands.

A simple electromagnetically coupled wideband printed microstrip antenna having a 2:1 VSWR bandwidth of 38% covering the 5.2/5.8-GHz WLAN, HIPERLAN2, and HiSWANa communication bands is presented. The large bandwidth is obtained by adding a rectangular metal strip on a slotted square microstrip antenna. The antenna occupies an overall dimension of 42 times 55 times 3.2 mm3 when printed on a substrate of dielectric constant 4. It exhibits good radiation characteristics and moderate gain in the entire operating band. Details of the design along with experimental and simulation results are presented and discussed.

A new design of a dual-band dual-polarized electromagnetically coupled slot loaded square patch antenna, covering the WLAN 5.2 GHz and 5.8 GHz bands, achieving bandwidth enhancement by using tapered slot structure, is presented here. The proposed antenna covers 5.09–5.47 GHz and 5.7–5.88 GHz bands. Details of the antenna design along with experimental and simulated results are presented and discussed.

Design of a compact dual frequency microstrip antenna is presented. The structure consists of a slotted circular patch with a dielectric superstrate. The superstrate, not only acts as a radome, but improves the bandwidth and lowers the resonant frequency also. The proposed design provides an overall size reduction of about 60% compared to an unslotted patch along with good efficiency, gain and bandwidth. The polarization planes at the two resonances are orthogonal and can be simultaneously excited using a coaxial feed. Parametric study of this configuration showed that the frequency ratio of the two resonances can be varied from 1.17 to 1.7 enabling its applications in the major wireless communication bands like AWS, DECT,PHS,Wi.Bro, ISM,and DMB. Design equations are also deduced for the proposed antenna and validated.

A compact dual-band uniplanar antenna for operation in the 2.4/5.2/5.8 GHz WLAN/HIPERLAN2 communication bands is presented. The dual-band antenna is obtained by modifying one of the lateral strips of a slot line, thereby producing two different current paths. The antenna occupies a very small area of 14.5times16.6 mm2 including the ground plane on a substrate having dielectric constant 4.4 and thickness 1.6 mm at 2.2 GHz. The antenna resonates with two bands from 2.2 to 2.52 GHz and from 5 to 10 GHz with good matching, good radiation characteristics and moderate gain

Design of a dual linearly-polarised microstrip patch antenna, excited by two orthogonal microstrip feed lines, is presented. A reduction in patch size of 35% is obtained when compared to a square patch operating at the same frequency. The polarisations are oriented at +45 and - 45 with an isolation of more than 36 dB between the ports. Unlike earlier designs, the proposed structure provides better gain.

The use of a split-ring resonator (SRR)-loaded waveguide for the design of a band-rejection filter with adjustable bandwidth is reported. The width of the stopband can be adjusted by suitably positioning the SRR array in the waveguide. The rejection band can be made very narrow by placing the array at the electric-field minimum. The stopband attenuation depends on the number of unit cells in the array.
