The present study describes the preparation of Vinyl acetate-Butyl acrylate copolymer lattices of varying compositions and solid contents by semicontinuous emulsion polymerization method. This copolymer lattices were used as binder to develop a new surface coating formulation. The properties of this surface coating were improved by using nano TiO2 colloidal sol as a pigment. Antimicrobial activity of surface coatings was improved by the addition of carboxymethyl chitosan as biocide. Uniformly dispersed tyre crumb was used to give a mat finish to the coating. The mechanical properties adhesive properties, thermal properties etc. of the coatings are presented in thesis.

Various compositions of linear low density polyethylene(LLDPE) containing bio-filler(either starch or dextrin)of various particle sizes were prepared. The mechanical, thermal,FTIR,morphological(SEM),water absorption and melt flow(MFI) studies were carried out.Biodegradability of the compositions were determined using a shake culture flask containing amylase producing bacteria(vibrios),which were isolated from marine benthic environment and by soil burial test. The effect of low quantities of metal oxides and metal stearate as pro-oxidants in LLDPE and in the LLDPE-biofiller compositions was established by exposing the samples to ultraviolet light. The combination of bio-filler and a pro-oxidant improves the degradation of linear low density polyethylene. The maleation of LLDPE improves the compatibility of the c blend components and thepro-oxidants enhance the photodegradability of the compatibilised blends. The responsibility studies on the partially biodegradable LLDPE containing bio-fillers and pro-oxidants suggest that the blends could be repeatedly reprocessed without deterioration in mechanical properties.

Novel thermo-reversible zinc sulphonated ionomers based on styrene butadiene rubber (SBR), and high styrene rubber (HSH) were synthesized by sulphonation followed by neutralization with zinc. The sulphonate content of the ionomer was estimated by using x-ray fluorescence spectroscopy. Presence of sulphonate groups has been confirmed by FTIR and FTNMR spectra. The TGA results show improvement in the thermo~oxidative stability of the modified rubber. Both DSC and DMTA studies show that the incorporation of the ionic groups affect the glass rubber transition of the base polymer. lntroduction ol ionic functionality in to the base material improved the physical properties. Retention of the improved physical properties of the novel ionomers even after three repeated cycles of mixing and molding may be considered as the evidence for the reprocessability of the ionomer. Effect of particulate fillers (HAF black, silica and zinc stearate) on the properties of the zinc sulphonated styrene butadiene rubber ionomer has been evaluated. Incorporation of tillers results in improvement in mechanical properties. Zinc stearate plays the dual role of reinforcement and plasticization. The evaluation of dielectric properties of zinc sulphonated styrene butadiene rubber iorpmers at microwave frequencies reveal that the materials show conductivity at semiconductor level. The real and imaginary parts of the complex permittivity increases with increase in ionic functionality. Use of the 38.5 ZnS-SBR ionomer as a compatibiliser for obtaining the technologically compatible blends from the immiscible SBR/NBR system has been discussed.

The thesis describes studies on development of short Nylon-6 fibre composites based on rubber-toughened polystyrene (PS). Toughening was done using natural rubber (NR), styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) and whole tyre reclaim (WTR). The composites were prepared by melt mixing in an internal mixer at 170 oC. It was found that the optimum blend ratio was 85/15 for PS/NR, 90/10 for PS/SBR and 90/22 for PS/WTR blends. The effect of dynamic vulcanisation on 85/15 PS/NR and 90/10 PS/SBR blends using dicumyl peroxide (DCP) at various concentrations were also studied. The dynamic crosslinking improved the tensile properties, flexural properties, impact strength and dynamic mechanical properties of both the blends. The effect of unmodified and resorcinol formaldehyde latex (RFL)-coated short Nylon-6 fibres on the mechanical properties, morphology and dynamic mechanical properties of 85/15 PS/NR, 90/10 PS/SBR and 90/22 PS/WTR blends were studied. Fibre loading was varied from 0 to 3 wt.%. For 85/15 PS/NR blend, there was a significant enhancement in tensile properties, flexural properties and impact strength with 1 wt.% of both unmodified and RFL-coated fibres. Dynamic mechanical analysis revealed that the storage modulus at room temperature was maximum at 1 wt.% fiber loading for both composites. The surface functionality of the fiber was improved by giving alkali treatment. Maleic anhydride-grafted-polystyrene (MA-g-PS) was prepared and used as a compatibiliser. The effect of MA-g-PS on the composites was investigated with respect to mechanical properties, morphology and dynamic mechanical properties. The compatibiliser loading was varied from 0 to 2 wt.%. The properties were enhanced significantly in the case of treated and untreated fibre composites at a compatibiliser loading of 0.75 wt.%. SEM analysis confirmed better bonding between the fibre and the matrix. Dynamic mechanical studies showed that the storage modulus at room temperature improved for treated fibre composites in the presence of compatibiliser. In the case of 90/10 PS/SBR composites, the addition of short Nylon-6 fibres at 1 wt.% loading improved the tensile modulus, flexural properties and impact strength while the tensile strength was marginally reduced. The surface treated fibers along with compatibiliser at 0.5 wt.% improved the tensile properties, flexural properties and impact strength. DMA reveale that the storage modulus at room temperature was better for composites containing untreated fibre and the compatibiliser. In the case of 90/22 PS/WTR blends, 1 wt.% unmodified fibre and 0.5 wt.% RFL-coated fibres improved tensile modulus, flexural properties and impact strength. Tensile strength was improved marginally. The surface treatment of Nylon fibre and the addition of compatibiliser at 0.5 wt.% enhanced the tensile properties, flexural properties and impact strength. The dynamic mechanical analysis showed that the storage modulus at room temperature was better for untreated fibre composites in conjunction with the compatibiliser. The thermal stability of PS/NR was studied by TGA. Thermal stability of the blends improved with dynamic vulcanisation and with the incorporation of RFL-coated Nylon fibres. The untreated and partially hydrolyzed fibre composites in conjunction with the compatibiliser enhanced the thermal stability. Kinetic studies showed that the degradation of the blends and the composites followed first order kinetics.

Phenolic resins suffer from the presence of microvoids on curing. This often leads to less than satisfactory properties in the cured resin. This disadvantage has limited the use of phenolic resins to some extent. This study is an attempt to improve the mechanical properties of the phenolic resol resins by chemical modification aimed at reducing the microvoid population. With this end in view various themoset resins synthesised under predetennined conditions have been employed for modifying phenolic resols. Such resins include unsaturated polyester, epoxy and epoxy novolac prepolymers. The results establish the effectiveness of these resins for improving the mechanical properties of phenolics. Experimental and analytical techniques used include FTIR, DMA, TGA, SEM and mechanical property evaluation. While most of the modifier resins employed give positive results the effect of adding UP is found to be surprising as well as impressive.

LLDPE was blended with poly (vinyl alcohol) and mechanical, thermal, spectroscopic properties and biodegradability were investigated. The biodegradability of LLDPE/PVA blends has been studied in two environments, viz. (1) a culture medium containing Vibrio sp. and (2) a soil environment over a period of 15 weeks. Nanoanatase having photo catalytic activity was synthesized by hydrothermal method using titanium-iso-propoxide. The synthesized TiO2 was characterized by X-Ray diffraction (XRD), BET studies, FTIR studies and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The crystallite size of titania was calculated to be ≈ 6nm from the XRD results and the surface area was found to be about 310m2/g by BET method. SEM shows that nanoanatase particles prepared by this method are spherical in shape. Linear low density polyethylene films containing polyvinyl alcohol and a pro-oxidant (TiO2 or cobalt stearate with or without vegetable oil) were prepared. The films were then subjected to natural weathering and UV exposure followed by biodegradation in culture medium as well as in soil environment. The degradation was monitored by mechanical property measurements, thermal studies, rate of weight loss, FTIR and SEM studies. Higher weight loss, texture change and greater increments in carbonyl index values were observed in samples containing cobalt stearate and vegetable oil. The present study demonstrates that the combination of LLDPE/PVA blends with (I) nanoanatase/vegetable oil and (ii) cobalt stearate/vegetable oil leads to extensive photodegradation. These samples show substantial degradation when subsequent exposure to Vibrio sp. is made. Thus a combined photodegradation and biodegradation process is a promising step towards obtaining a biodegradable grade of LLDPE.

The thesis entitled Study on Accelerators in Rubber Vulcanization with Special Reference to the Binary Systems Containing Substituted Dithiobiurets. It includes a detailed study on the binary accelerator systems containing substituted dithiobiurets in natural rubber and NR latex and dithiobiurets in SBR and NR-SBR blends vulcanization systems. It deals with the experimental procedure adopted for the preparation of DTB-II and DTB-III; the procedure for compounding and vulcanization and determination of physical properties like modulus, tensile strength, elongation at break, hardness, compression set, heat build up etc. The results indicate that there is efficient acceleration activity of the dithiobiurets in the vulcanization of natural rubber latex containing TMT. The study of dithiobiurets in natural rubber and NR latex reveal that they are having definite accelerating effect in SBR vulcanization systems.

PP has been getting much attention over the years because it is a very durable polymer commonly used in aggressive environments including automotive battery casings, fuel containers etc. They are used to make bottles, fibers for clothing, components in cars etc. However, it has some shortcomings such as low dimensional and thermal stability. Materials such as metal oxides with sizes of the order 1–50 nm have received a great deal of attention because of their versatile applications in polymer/ inorganic nanocomposites, optoelectronic devices, biomedical materials, and other areas. They are stable under harsh process conditions and also regarded as safe materials to human beings and animals. In the present investigation, PP is modified by incorporating metal oxide nanoparticles such as ZnO and TiO2 by simple melt mixing method. Melt spinning method was used to prepare PP/metal oxide nanocomposite fibers. Various studies have been carried out on these composites and fibers. In the first part of the study, ZnO nanoparticles were prepared from ZnCl2 and NaOH in presence of chitosan, PVA, ethanol and starch. This is a simple and inexpensive method compared to other methods. Change in morphology and particle size of ZnO were studied. Least particle size was obtained in chitosan medium. The particles were characterized by using XRD, SEM, TEM, TGA and EDAX. Antibacterial properties of ZnO prepared in chitosan medium (NZO) and commercial zinc oxide (CZO) were evaluated using a gram positive and a gram negative bacteria

There are a large number of commercial examples and property advantages of immiscible elastomer blends.73 Blends of natural rubber (NR) and polybutadiene (BR) have shown various advantages including heat stability, improved elasticity and abrasion resistance. Ethylene-propylene-diene-rubber (EPDM) blended with styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) has shown improvements in ozone and chemical resistance with better compression set properties. Blends of EPDM and nitrile rubber (NBR) have been cited as a compromise for obtaining moderate oil and ozone resistance with improved low temperature properties. Neoprene (CR)/BR blends offer improved low temperature properties and abrasion resistance with better processing characteristics etc. However, in many of the commercial two-phase elastomer blends, segregation of the crosslinking agents, carbon black or antioxidants preferentially into one phase can result in failure to attain optimum properties. Soluble and insoluble compounding ingredients are found to be preferentially concentrated in one phase. The balance of optimum curing of both phases therefore presents a difficult problem. It has been the aim of this study to improve the performance of commercially important elastomer blends such as natural rubber (NR)/styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) and natural rubber/polybutadiene rubber (BR) by industrially viable procedures

The primary aim of this work has been to develop a cost effective process that can be operated at room temperature for developing latex reclaim with superior mechanical properties. With this objective in mind the researcher proposes to study the reclaiming action of four different chemicals on latex products waste. Waste latex products are chosen because it has a higher potential to generate good quality rubber hydrocarbon since all latex products are based on either high quality concentrated latex or creamed latex. Moreover, all latex products are only lightly crosslinked and not masticated and hence not mechanically degraded. The author also proposes to fully explore the possible application of latex reclaim in various fields..

In the present study, an attempt has been made to prepare composites by incorporating expanded graphite fillers in insulating elastomer matrices and to study its DC electrical conductivity, dielectric properties and electromagnetic shielding characteristics, in addition to evaluating the mechanical properties. Recently, electronic devices and components have been rapidly developing and advancing. Thus, with increased usage of electronic devices, electromagnetic waves generated by electronic systems can potentially create serious problems such as malfunctions of medical apparatus and industry robots and can even cause harm to the human body. Therefore, in this work the applicable utility of the prepared composites as electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding material are also investigated. The dissertation includes nine chapters

Although the physical and technological properties of modified rubbers were compared with those of conventional rubbers in the earlier studies reviewed above, the extent of energy saving possible by their use has not been quantified. In the present work it is proposed to determine the energy saving possible by using the following forms of natural rubber: 1. Oil extended natural rubber, 2. peptised natural rubber, 3. latex stage compounds. The process of production and quality control of the above types of processed rubbers are proposed to be standardised. It is also planned to work out a methodology for utilising field coagula for production of constant viscosity rubbers. The variation in processing properties of rubber from popular Indian clones will be examined and those with energy advantages in the processing stage will be identified. In conclusion a recommendation for adoption of a commercially advantageous processing procedure among Indian rubber plantation industry is also given.

This thesis is essentially concerned with a study of the recovery of pungency-free colour matter from capsicum spice of Indian origin. A spice oleoresin may be defined as the total soluble extract of the spice in a specific solvent and embraces all the active components that contribute to aroma, taste and related sensory factors associated with the spice, together with varying amounts of pigments, plant waxes, resins and fixed oils. Whereas, in general, oleoresins are coveted for their flavour qualities, in some cases, the pigments present therein play a vital role in food technology Of these, capsicum oleoresin is the most outstanding, since it contributes both colour and flavour principles.
