The surface acidity and basicity of binary oxides of Zr with Ce and La are determined using a series of Hammet indicators and Ho,,max values are reported. The generation of new acid sites habe been ascribed to the charge imbalance of M1-O-M2 bonds, where M1 and M2 are metal atoms. Both Bronsted and Lewis acid sites contribute to the acidity of the oxides

Transparent conducting oxides (TCO’s) have been known and used for technologically important applications for more than 50 years. The oxide materials such as In2O3, SnO2 and impurity doped SnO2: Sb, SnO2: F and In2O3: Sn (indium tin oxide) were primarily used as TCO’s. Indium based oxides had been widely used as TCO’s for the past few decades. But the current increase in the cost of indium and scarcity of this material created the difficulty in obtaining low cost TCO’s. Hence the search for alternative TCO material has been a topic of active research for the last few decades. This resulted in the development of various binary and ternary compounds. But the advantages of using binary oxides are the easiness to control the composition and deposition parameters. ZnO has been identified as the one of the promising candidate for transparent electronic applications owing to its exciting optoelectronic properties. Some optoelectronics applications of ZnO overlap with that of GaN, another wide band gap semiconductor which is widely used for the production of green, blue-violet and white light emitting devices. However ZnO has some advantages over GaN among which are the availability of fairly high quality ZnO bulk single crystals and large excitonic binding energy. ZnO also has much simpler crystal-growth technology, resulting in a potentially lower cost for ZnO based devices. Most of the TCO’s are n-type semiconductors and are utilized as transparent electrodes in variety of commercial applications such as photovoltaics, electrochromic windows, flat panel displays. TCO’s provide a great potential for realizing diverse range of active functions, novel functions can be integrated into the materials according to the requirement. However the application of TCO’s has been restricted to transparent electrodes, ii notwithstanding the fact that TCO’s are n-type semiconductors. The basic reason is the lack of p-type TCO, many of the active functions in semiconductor originate from the nature of pn-junction. In 1997, H. Kawazoe et al reported the CuAlO2 as the first p-type TCO along with the chemical design concept for the exploration of other p-type TCO’s. This has led to the fabrication of all transparent diode and transistors. Fabrication of nanostructures of TCO has been a focus of an ever-increasing number of researchers world wide, mainly due to their unique optical and electronic properties which makes them ideal for a wide spectrum of applications ranging from flexible displays, quantum well lasers to in vivo biological imaging and therapeutic agents. ZnO is a highly multifunctional material system with highly promising application potential for UV light emitting diodes, diode lasers, sensors, etc. ZnO nanocrystals and nanorods doped with transition metal impurities have also attracted great interest, recently, for their spin-electronic applications This thesis summarizes the results on the growth and characterization of ZnO based diodes and nanostructures by pulsed laser ablation. Various ZnO based heterojunction diodes have been fabricated using pulsed laser deposition (PLD) and their electrical characteristics were interpreted using existing models. Pulsed laser ablation has been employed to fabricate ZnO quantum dots, ZnO nanorods and ZnMgO/ZnO multiple quantum well structures with the aim of studying the luminescent properties.

Iron and mixed iron aluminium pillared montmorillonites prepared by partial hydrolysis method was subjected to room temperature exchange with transition metals of the first series. The materials exhibit good structural as well as thermal stability. Exchanged metals were found to be present inside the porous network, in the environs of the pillars. Mixed pillaring resulted in the intercalation of Al 13 like polymers in which Al is partially substituted by Fe. The acidic structure was followed by temperature programmed desorption of ammonia and cumene cracking test reaction. Weak and medium sites overshadow the strong sites in all systems. However, exchange with metals increases the number of strong sites. The prepared materials are efficient catalysts for gas phase MTBE synthesis. The catalytic activity can be well correlated with the total amount of weak and medium acid sites.

The current work deals with the synthesis and characterization of metal complexes derived from some substituted acylhydrazones. The hydrazones under investigation were characterized by IR, UV, NMR spectral studies and the molecular structure of one of the hydrazones was solved by single crystal XRD studies. In the present work dioxovanadium(V), manganese(II), cobalt(II/III), nickel(II), copper(II), zinc(II) and cadmium(II) complexes were synthesized and characterized by various spectroscopic techniques, molar conductance measurements, magnetic susceptibility measurements and cyclic voltammetry. Single crystals of some of the complexes were isolated and characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The thesis is divided into eight chapters. Chapter 1 gives an introduction on hydrazones, diversity in their chelating behavior and their application in various fields. This chapter also describes different analytical techniques employed for the characterization of hydrazones and their metal complexes. Chapter 2 includes the synthesis and characterization of two substituted acylhydrazones. This chapter also discusses how the coordination behavior of hydrazones under investigation is interesting. Chapters 3-8 discuss the synthesis and characterization of some transition metal complexes derived from the acylhydrazones under study. The hydrazones synthesized were found to exist in the amido form. Various characterization techniques were carried out to explore the structure of the synthesized complexes. The results indicate that both the hydrazones coordinate through the pyridyl and azomethine nitrogens and amide oxygen either in enolate or neutral form. Out of synthesized complexes V(V), Zn/Cd(II) and one of the cobalt complex was found to diamagnetic. We could isolate single crystals of some of the complexes and most of the complexes crystallized were found to have a distorted octahedral geometry. Thus X-ray crystallographic study which was used as major tool in the structure determination revealed that the hydrazones undergo a rotation about the azomethine bond on complexation. We hope the work presented in the thesis would be helpful for those who are working in the field of metal complexes and can further they can be utilized for various applications.

The present work deals with the complexation of Schiff bases of aroylhydrazines with various transition metal ions. The hydrazone systems selected for study have long 7I:-delocalized chain in the ligand molecule itself, which get intensified due to metal-to-ligand or ligand-to-metal charge transfer excitations upon coordination. Complexation with metal ions like copper, nickel, cobalt, manganese, iron, zinc and cadmium are tried. Various spectral techniques are employed for characterization. The structures of some complexes have been well established by single crystal X-ray diffraction studies. The nonIinaer optical studies of the ligands and complexes synthesized have been studied by hyper-Rayleigh scattering technique. The work is presented in seven chapters and the last one deals with summary and conclusion. One of the hydrazone system selected for study proved that it could give rise to polymeric metal complexes. Some of the copper, nickel, zinc and cadmium complexes showed non-linear optical activity. The NLO studies of manganese and iron showed negative result, may be due to the inversion centre of symmetry within the molecular lattice.

Scientists throughout the world are in search of a better methodology to reduce the use of environmentally hazardous chemicals common in industries .A significant contribution in this field is given by different redox catalysts in oxidation reactions. The oxidation of organic substrates represents one of the most important industrial chemical reactions, explaining the significant efforts invested in the research and development of new heterogeneous catalysts with increased activities and selectivities in these type reactions[l-4|. Hence liquid phase reactions like epoxidation of cylcohexene and hydroxylation of phenol were carried out with a new outlook in the challenge using CeO2/TiO;; and CuO/TiO2 catalysts denoted as TiO2-Ce as TiO2-Cu respectively in this work. Also different wt% of metals incorporated titania catalysts like 3, 6, 9 wt% CeO2/TiO; and CuO/TiO;were subjected to the present study .The interaction between metal oxides and the oxide supports have attracted much attention because of the wide applications of supported metal oxide systems[7,8]. It is well known that supported oxides of transition metals are widely used as catalysts for various reactions. Titania as well its metal modified catalysts systems afford high activity and selectivity in the liquid phase epoxidation of cyclohexene[9]. Cyclohexene epoxide is obtained as the major product during the reaction with small amounts of allylic substitution products. This chapter gives an idea about the liquid phase oxidation reactions like epoxidation of cylcohexene and hydroxylation of phenol in which many industrially important products are formed. Here discusses about the redox properties of the ceria and copper incorporated titania catalysts. The epoxidation of cyclohcxene is carried out efficiently over the prepared systems with the selective formation of cyclohexane epoxide. This reaction hints that it might be possible to create cleaner nylon chemistry. The total acidity of the prepared systems plays an important role in determining the catalytic activity in the dehydrogenation of cyclohexane and cyclohexene. PP has been getting much attention over the years because it is a very durable polymer commonly used in aggressive environments including automotive battery casings, fuel containers etc. They are used to make bottles, fibers for clothing, components in cars etc. However, it has some shortcomings such as low dimensional and thermal stability. Materials such as metal oxides with sizes of the order 1–50 nm have received a great deal of attention because of their versatile applications in polymer/ inorganic nanocomposites, optoelectronic devices, biomedical materials, and other areas. They are stable under harsh process conditions and also regarded as safe materials to human beings and animals. In the present investigation, PP is modified by incorporating metal oxide nanoparticles such as ZnO and TiO2 by simple melt mixing method. Melt spinning method was used to prepare PP/metal oxide nanocomposite fibers. Various studies have been carried out on these composites and fibers. In the first part of the study, ZnO nanoparticles were prepared from ZnCl2 and NaOH in presence of chitosan, PVA, ethanol and starch. This is a simple and inexpensive method compared to other methods. Change in morphology and particle size of ZnO were studied. Least particle size was obtained in chitosan medium. The particles were characterized by using XRD, SEM, TEM, TGA and EDAX. Antibacterial properties of ZnO prepared in chitosan medium (NZO) and commercial zinc oxide (CZO) were evaluated using a gram positive and a gram negative bacteria

Polymer supports and polymeric complexes are highly versatile and they are successfully employed as efficient reagents, substrates and catalysts. Recently there observed a growing interest in the synthesis of tailor-made polymer supports and functionalized polymers for the preparation of metal complexes for various applications. They have the combination of properties due to the macromolecular structure as well as due to the reactivity of the functional group. An interesting feature of functional polymers is their affinity towards metal ions. Therefore the synthesis, characterization and application of such polymeric complexes have great scientific and analytical importance. Semicarbazones and their transition metal complexes have been receiving considerable attention because of their biological relevance and applications in the field of analysis and in the field of organic NLO materials. Their structural diversity also attracted inorganic chemists. A good deal of work has been reported on the synthesis and structural investigation of semicarbazones and their complexes. This is due partially to their capability of acting as multidentate, NO, NNO, ONO and ONNO donors with the formation of either mono or bi or polynuclear complexes. Their chemistry and pharmacological applications have been extensively investigated. Appreciable biological applications as well as diverse stereochemistry of their metal complexes prompted us to synthesize two new tridentate ONO donor N4-phenyl semicarbazones derived from 2-hydroxy-4-methoxyacetophenone and 2-hydroxy-4-methoxybenzophenone and their transition metal complexes. These ketones were selected since they can provide a further binding site from phenolic–OH and can thus increase the denticity. Introduction of heterocyclic bases like 1,10-phenanthroline, 2,2′-bipyridine, 4,4′-dimethyl- 2,2′-bipyridine and 4-picoline and some pseudohalides like azide and thiocyanate ion can result in mixed ligand metal chelates with different geometries in coordination compounds In the present study, oxovanadium(IV), manganese(II), cobalt (II/III), nickel(II), copper(II) and zinc(II) complexes of 2-hydroxy-4- methoxyacetophenone-N4-phenylsemicarbazone (H2ASC) and 2-hydroxy-4- methoxybenzophenone-N4-phenylsemicarbazone (H2BSC) were synthesized and characterized.

One of the main challenges in the development of metal-oxide gas sensors is enhancement of selectivity to a particular gas. Currently, two general approaches exist for enhancing the selective properties of sensors. The first one is aimed at preparing a material that is specifically sensitive to one compound and has low or zero cross-sensitivity to other compounds that may be present in the working atmosphere. To do this, the optimal temperature, doping elements, and their concentrations are investigated. Nonetheless, it is usually very difficult to achieve an absolutely selective metal oxide gas sensor in practice. Another approach is based on the preparation of materials for discrimination between several analyte in a mixture. It is impossible to do this by using one sensor signal. Therefore, it is usually done either by modulation of sensor temperature or by using sensor arrays. The present work focus on the characterization of n-type semiconducting metal oxides like Tungsten oxide (WO3), Zinc Oxide (ZnO) and Indium oxide (In2O3) for the gas sensing purpose. For the purpose of gas sensing thick as well as thin films were fabricated. Two different gases, NO2 and H2S gases were selected in order to study the gas sensing behaviour of these metal oxides. To study the problem associated with selectivity the metal oxides were doped with metals and the gas sensing characteristics were investigated. The present thesis is entitled “Development of semiconductor metal oxide gas sensors for the detection of NO2 and H2S gases” and consists of six chapters.
