The present study is an attempt to elucidate the sedimentation regime of the harbour and its environment. These investigations include detailed studies on the hydrography' of the harbour region of the estuary, estuarine circulation, spatial and temporal variations of the amount and texture of bottom sediments. A note on the dredging is also given in the Annexure .The thesis is presented in six chapters

Extensive investigations on the distribution and biology of skipjack tuna are available but less is known of the bait fishes on which this fishery depends and what is known is inadequate, fragmentary and of cursory nature. The information available on tuna livebait fishes of Lakshadweep are mainly cofined to short term surverys aimed at estimating theiravailability and abundance. Reports on the biology of a few species from Minicoy are also present in the literature. This study was, therefore, prompted by a paucity of information on 1) the livebits of Minicoy, 2) livebait fishery of the northern islands and 3) knowledge of livebait ecology

It is the object of the present study to contribute so much information as possible on the biology and economy of M.casta on the south west coast of India. It includes investigations on the growth of the species in three dimensions.

The marine environment is indubitably the largest contiguous habitat on Earth. Because of its vast volume and area, the influence of the world ocean on global climate is profound and plays an important role in human welfare and destiny. The marine environment encompasses several habitats, from the sea surface layer down through the bulk water column, which extends >10,000 meters depth, and further down to the habitats on and under the sea floor. Compared to surface habitats, which have relatively high kinetic energy, deep-ocean circulation is very sluggish. By comparison, life in the deep sea is characterized by a relatively constant physical and chemical environment. Deep water occupying the world ocean basin is a potential natural resource based on its properties such as low temperature, high pressure and relatively unexplored properties. So, a judicious assessment of the marine resources and its management are essential to ensure sustainable development of the country’s ocean resources. Marine sediments are complex environments that are affected by both physiological and biological factors, water movements and burrowing animals. They encompass a large extent of aggregates falling from the surface waters. In aquatic ecosystems, the flux of organic matter to the bottom sediments depend on primary productivity at the ocean surface and water depth. Over 50% of the earth’s surface is covered by deep-sea sediments that are primarily formed through the continual deposition of particles from the productive pelagic waters (Vetriani et al., 1999). These aggregates are regarded as ‘hot spots’ of microbial activity in the ocean (Simon et al., 2002). This represents a good nutritional substrate for heterotrophic bacteria and favours bacterial growth

The mangroves of Kerala are fast disappearing due to developmental activities. There are very few studies conducted in the chemical aspects of these ecosystems. The main objective of this study is to assess the spatial and seasonal variation of hydrographical as well as nutrients in mangrove ecosystems along Kerala coast. Five sampling sites least intervened by industries were selected for the study. Sampling was done for a period of six months in monthly intervals. A monsoonal hike of dissolved nutrients was observed in all ecosystems except in the constructed mangrove wetland. The constructed wetland exhibited a different hydrography and nutrient level in all seasons. The mangrove forest in this area consists of the species Bruguiera gymnorrhiza which has been planted since forty years.

The main objectives of the study are: To study the seasonal distribution of copepods with special reference to their qualitative and quantitative distribution, with notes on biodiversity in the Andaman Sea and the Bay of Bengal. To study the spatial and temporal distribution of copepods in the Andaman Sea and the Bay of Bengal. To understand the hydrography and the environmental characteristics of the Andaman Sea and the Bay of Bengal and their role in the distribution and biomass of copepods. To study the vertical migration/diurnal migration of the copepods. To study the difference between the coastal and oceanic composition of copepods in the study area and the factors responsible for it.
