Antennas are indispensable component of any wireless communication device. An antenna is a transducer between the transmitter and the free space waves and vice versa. They efficiently transfer electromagnetic energy from a transmission line into free space. But the present day communication applications require compact and ultra wide band designs which cannot be catered by simple microstrip based designs. PIFAs have solved the problem to some extend, but the field of antennas needs more innovative designs In this thesis the design and development of compact planner antenna are presented. Emphasis is given to the design of the feed as well as the radiator resulting in simple compact uniplanar geometries. The Asymmetric coplanar feed used to excite the antennas is found to be a suitable choice for feeding compact antennas. The main objectives of the study are the design of compact single, dual and multi band antennas with uniplanar structure and extension of the design for practical GSM/WLAN applications and Ultra compact antennas using the above techniques and extension of the design to antennas for practical applications like RFID/DVB-H. All the above objectives are thoroughly studied. Antennas with ultra compact dimensions are obtained as a result of the study. Simple equations are provided to design antennas with the required characteristics. The design equations are verified by designing different antennas for different applications.

The thesis is the outcome of the exhaustive theoretical and experimental investigations performed on Printed Monopole Antennas loaded with different geometries .The work presented in this thesis describes the development of a 3D- FDTD(Finite Difference Time Domain) Modeller using MATLAB for the numerical computation of the radiation characteristics of the antenna. The predicted results are verified experimentally and also through simulation using Ansoft HFSS.The effect of top loading of the monopole with different geometries ,the dimensions of the loading patch and ground plane and the material parameters of the dielectric substrate upon the radiation performance of the antenna is studied in detail. Optimized Printed Monopole antennas suitable for Ultra Wide Band (UWB) applications have been developed.

An asymmetric coplanar strip-fed uniplanar antenna for wideband applications is presented. The resulting antenna offers a 2:1 VSWR bandwidth greater than 100% from 1.58 to 5.48 GHz covering the DCS/PCS/IEEE 802.11a/WiMAX bands. The antenna has an overall dimension of 44 × 35 mm2 when printed on a substrate of dielectric constant 4.4 and height 1.6 mm. The design equation is also presented in this article. The antenna exhibits good radiation characteristics and moderate gain in the entire operating band.

A simple electromagnetically coupled wideband printed microstrip antenna having a 2:1 VSWR bandwidth of 38% covering the 5.2/5.8-GHz WLAN, HIPERLAN2, and HiSWANa communication bands is presented. The large bandwidth is obtained by adding a rectangular metal strip on a slotted square microstrip antenna. The antenna occupies an overall dimension of 42 times 55 times 3.2 mm3 when printed on a substrate of dielectric constant 4. It exhibits good radiation characteristics and moderate gain in the entire operating band. Details of the design along with experimental and simulation results are presented and discussed.

The author presents the development of a new dielectric resonator antenna(DRA) suitable for wideband wireless communication applications. The design comprises of a simple cylindrical dielectric resonator (DR) and a microstrip feed, in a low radiation-Q structure, enabling wide impedance bandwidth. The radiation pattern is conical shaped, resulted from thew low-Q structure.Dielectric constant of the DR,its dimensions and topological parameters of the feed line are the major design parameters of the antenna.By proper selection of these parameters, the DRA can be operated over a wideband width covering multiple wireless applications. The antenna is simulated using Ansoft HFSS TM and measured using HP 8510C vector network analyser. Some of the measured results are confirmed by using the Finite Difference Time Domain(FDTD) technique implemented in MATLAB.

A planar monopole antenna suitable for broadband wireless communication is designed and developed. With the use of a truncated ground plane, the proposed printed monopole antenna offers nearly 60% 2:1 VSWR bandwidth and good radiation characteristics for the frequencies across the operating band. A parametric study of the antenna is performed based on the optimized design, and a prototype of the antenna suitable for 2.4-GHz WLAN application is presented. The antenna can be easily integrated into wireless circuitry and is convenient for application in laptop computers.

The thesis is divided into nine chapters including introduction. Mainly we determine ultra L-topologies in the lattice of L- topologies and study their properties. We nd some sublattices in the lattice of L-topologies and study their properties. Also we study the lattice structure of the set of all L-closure operators on a set X.

A printed compact coplanar waveguide fed triangular slot antenna for ultra wide band (UWB) communication systems is presented. The antenna comprises of a triangular slot loaded ground plane with a T shaped strip radiator to enhance the bandwidth and radiation. This compact antenna has a dimension of 26mm×26mm when printed on a substrate of dielectric constant 4.4 and thickness 1.6mm. Design equations are implemented and validated for different substrates. The pulse distortion is insignificant and is verified by the measured antenna performance with high signal fidelity and virtually steady group delay. The simulation and experiment reveal that the proposed antenna exhibits good impedance match, stable radiation patterns and constant gain and group delay over the entire operating band

The paper presents a compact planar Ultra Wide Band ¯lter employing folded stepped impedance resonators with series capacitors and dumb bell shaped defected ground structures. An interdigital quarter wavelength coupled line is used for achieving the band pass characteristics. The transmission zeros are produced by stepped impedance resonators. The ¯lter has steep roll o® rate and good attenuation in its lower and upper stop bands, contributed by the series capacitor and defected ground structures respectively.

The paper presents a maximally flat compact planar filter employing folded Stepped Impedance Resonators (SIR) and Complementary Split Ring Resonators (CSRR), for Ultra Wide Band (UWB) applications. An interdigital quarter wavelength coupled line is used for achieving the band pass characteristics. The filter has low insertion loss in its pass band and steep roll off rate and good attenuation in its lower and upper stop bands. The measured microwave characteristics of the fabricated filter show good agreement with the simulated response

Zinc ferrite belongs to the class of normal spinels where it is assumed to have a cation distribution of Zn2`(Fe3`)2(O2~)4, and it is purported to be showing zero net magnetisation. However, there have been recent reports suggesting that zinc ferrite exhibits anomaly in its magnetisation. Zinc ferrite samples have been prepared by two di¤erent routes and have been analysed using low energy ion scattering, Mo¬ ssbauer spectroscopy and magnetic measurements. The results indicate that zinc occupies octahedral sites, contrary to the earlier belief that zinc occupies only the tetrahedral sites in a normal spinel. The amount of zinc on the B site increases with decrease in particle size. The LEIS results together with the Mo¬ ssbauer results and the magnetic measurements lead to the conclusion that zinc occupies the B site and the magnetisation exhibited by ultraÞne particles of zinc is due to short range ordering

This work presents a wideband low-distortion sigmadelta analog-to-digital converter (ADC) for Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) standard. The proposed converter makes use of low-distortion swing suppression SDM architecture which is highly suitable for low oversampling ratios to attain high linearity over a wide bandwidth. The modulator employs a 2-2 cascaded sigma-delta modulator with feedforward path with a single-bit quantizer in the first stage and 4-bit in the second stage. The modulator is designed in TSMC 0.18um CMOS technology and operates at 1.8V supply voltage. Simulation results show that, a peak SNDR of 57dB and a spurious free dynamic range (SFDR) of 66dB is obtained for a 10MHz signal bandwidth, and an oversampling ratio of 8.
