A comparative study of acid-base properties and catalytic activity of Sn-La and Sn-Sm mixed oxides and their corresponding sulfate modified analogues are reported in this thesis. The catalytic activity and product selectivity in the decomposition of alcohols are correlated with the acid-base and redox properties of the catalyst systems under study The effect of catalyst preparation, pretreatment and various reaction parameters on the catalytic activity of sulfate modified oxides is investigated in the oxidative dehydrogenation reactions The experimental conditions are optimised to synthesise industrially important organic chemicals viz. 2,6 xylenol, o-cresol, N-methylanilne and N,N-dimethylaniline employing the mixed oxide systems. The effect of sulfate treatment on the catalytic activity of these systems in the alkylation reactions of phenol, anisole and aniline is also investigated and the merits and demerits of sulfate treatment are highlighted.

Catalysis research underpins the science of modern chemical processing and fuel technologies. Catalysis is commercially one of the most important technologies in national economies. Solid state heterogeneous catalyst materials such as metal oxides and metal particles on ceramic oxide substrates are most common. They are typically used with commodity gases and liquid reactants. Selective oxidation catalysts of hydrocarbon feedstocks is the dominant process of converting them to key industrial chemicals, polymers and energy sources.[1] In the absence of a unique successfiil theory of heterogeneous catalysis, attempts are being made to correlate catalytic activity with some specific properties of the solid surface. Such correlations help to narrow down the search for a good catalyst for a given reaction. The heterogeneous catalytic performance of material depends on many factors such as [2] Crystal and surface structure of the catalyst. Thermodynamic stability of the catalyst and the reactant. Acid- base properties of the solid surface. Surface defect properties of the catalyst.Electronic and semiconducting properties and the band structure. Co-existence of dilferent types of ions or structures. Adsorption sites and adsorbed species such as oxygen.Preparation method of catalyst , surface area and nature of heat treatment. Molecular structure of the reactants. Many systematic investigations have been performed to correlate catalytic performances with the above mentioned properties. Many of these investigations remain isolated and further research is needed to bridge the gap in the present knowledge of the field.

Surface acidity of phosphate modified La2O3,CeO2 and SnO2 has been estimated by titrimetric Method using Hammett Indicators.Mixed Oxides of tin and lanthanum have also been prepared and subjected to phosphate modification.Surface characterizartion of the samples has been carried out using XRD, surface area, thermal analysis and IR spectroscopy. Phosphate content in the samples has been chemically estimated. The catalytic activity for benzylation and esterification reaction has also been investigated.

The prospective impact of nanomaterials in science and technology has followed an increasing trend due to their unique chemical and physical properties compared to bulk. Significant advances in current technologies in areas such as clean energy production, electronics, medicine, and environment have fuelled major research and development efforts in nanotechnology around the world. This leads to the opportunity to use such nanostructured materials in novel applications and devices. Ceria, zirconia, alumina and titania are some of the major oxides which find vast applications as a nanomaterial on a wider side.

Lanthanum oxide, La2O3 has been found to be an effective catalyst for the liquid phase reduction of cyclohexanone. The catalytic activities of La2O3 activated at 300, 500 and 800·C and its mixed oxides with alumina for the reduction of cyclohexanone with 2-propanol have been determined and the data parallel that of the electron donating properties of the catalysts. The electron donating properties of the catalysts have been determined from the adsorption of electron acceptors of different electron affinities on the surface of these oxides.

The electron donor properties of Pr6O11 activated at 300. 500 and 800°C are reported from the studies on adsorption of electron acceptors of various electron affinity (7. 7, 8, 8-tetracyanoquinodimethane. 2, 3. 5, 6-tetrachloro-l, 4-benzoquin one. p-dinitrobenzene. and m-dinitrobenzene) in three solvents (acetonitrile, 1,4-dioxan and ethyl acetate). The extent of electron transfer during adsorption is understood from magnetic measurements and ESR spectral data. The corresponding data on mixed oxides of Pr and Al are reported for various compositions, The acid / base properties of these oxides are determined using a set of Hammett indicators.

The surface acidity and basicity of mixed oxides of Zr and Y and their mixed oxides have been determined by titration method using Hammett indicators. The acid base properties are evaluated on a common scale of acid strength. Liquid phase reduction of cyclohexanone has been selected as a model reaction to correlate catalytic activity.

Catalysis is a very important process from an industrial point of view since the production of most industrially important chemicals involves catalysis.Solid acid catalysts are appealing since the nature of acid sites is known and their chemical behavior in acid catalyzed reactions can be rationalized by means of existing theories and models. Mixed oxides crystallizing in spinel structure are of special interest because the spinel lattice imparts extra stability to the catalyst under various reaction conditions so that theses systems have sustained activities for longer periods. The thesis entitled" Catalysis By Ferrites And Cobaltites For The Alkylation And Oxidation Of Organic Compounds " presents the preparation ,characterization ,and activity studies of the prepared spinels were modified by incorporating other ions and by changing the stoichiometry. The prepared spinels exhibiting better catalytic activity towards the studied reactions with good product selectivity.Acid-base properties and cation distribution of the spinels were found to control the catalytic activity.

Catalysis is an essential technology in manufacturing industries. The investigation based on supported vanadia catalysts and it’s sulfated analogues. Vanadia is a transition metal oxide and is used in oxidation reactions in chemical industry. It is more active and selective catalysts on suitable supports. The work deals with preparation of vanadia incorporated tin oxide and zirconia systems by wet impregnation. Physico-chemical characterization using instrumental techniques like BET etc. The surface acidic properties were determined by the ammonia TPD studies, Perylene absorption studies and Cumene conversion reaction. The catalytic activities of the prepared systems are tested by Friedel-Crafts benzylation of arenes and Bechmann rearrangement of Cyclohexanol oxime. Here the rector reactions are relatively rare. So to test the application of the catalyst systems for the selective oxidation of cyclohexanol to cyclohexanone and finally evaluate the catalytic activity of the systems for the vapour phase oxidative dehydrogenation of Ethylbenzene, which leads to the formation of Industrially important compound ‘styrene’ is another objective of this work

The changes in surface acidity/basicity and catalytic activity of cerium oxide due to surface modification by sulphate ion have been investigated. Electron donor properties of both the modified and unmodified oxides have been studied using electron acceptors of various electron affinity values, viz. 7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane, 2,3,5,6-tetrachloro--l, 4-benzoquinone. p-dinitrobenzene and m-dinitrobenzene in order to find out whether the increase in acidity on suphation is due to the generation of new acidic sites or they are formed at the expense of some of the basic sites. The surface acidity/basicity has been determined using a set of Hammett indicators. The data have been correlated with the catalytic activity of the oxides for esterification of acetic acid using l-butanol, reduction of cyclohexanone with 2- propanol and oxidation of cyclohexanol using benzophenone.
