In 1931 Dirac studied the motion of an electron in the field of a magnetic monopole and found that the quantization of electric charge can be explained by postulating the mere existence of a magnetic monopole. Since 1974 there has been a resurgence of interest in magnetic monopole due to the work of ‘t’ Hooft and Polyakov who independently observed that monopoles can exist as finite energy topologically stable solutions to certain spontaneously broken gauge theories. The thesis, “Studies on Magnetic Monopole Solutions of Non-abelian Gauge Theories and Related Problems”, reports a systematic investigation of classical solutions of non-abelian gauge theories with special emphasis on magnetic monopoles and dyons which possess both electric and magnetic charges. The formation of bound states of a dyon with fermions and bosons is also studied in detail. The thesis opens with an account of a new derivation of a relationship between the magnetic charge of a dyon and the topology of the gauge fields associated with it. Although this formula has been reported earlier in the literature, the present method has two distinct advantages. In the first place, it does not depend either on the mechanism of symmetry breaking or on the nature of the residual symmetry group. Secondly, the results can be generalized to finite temperature monopoles.

In order to check the damage caused by the parasites, even though it is difficult in open waters, a proper understanding of the seasonal variation in the distribution of the parasite and other factors like age of the host, sex of the host, which affect distribution of parasite is a must. Although several workers have carried out investigations on the taxonomy of metazoan parasites of marine and brackish water Fishes of India, very little attempt is made to correlate such investigations with the host and the environment. In this thesis such an attempt is made by the researcher. In chapter one the literature related to the prevalence, mean intensity of infection, and histopathological changes caused by the metazoan parasites, in particular by helminths, copepods and isopods, was reviewed. Chapter two contains observations on the distribution pattern of parasites in relation to the season, sex, and size of the host. It was found that the prevalence rate of radiorynchus_indicus infecting the alimentary canal of Tachysurugs mgacuglatus, Ergasilus sp. infecting the gills of T maculatus, and Lernaeeniicus ramosus found on the body surface of Qeimgipteirfugs jagonicus was higher during monsoon season. But agarna malayi found in the opercular chamber and Ehilometra cephalus infecting the gonads of valamugil speiglari showed a higher prevalence rate during the postmonsoon season. This was discussed on the basis of the hydrographical characteristics prevailing in the study area during the three different seasons. It was also observed that the sex of the host did not influence significantly the distribution pattern of the parasites. The reasons for this were also discussed. Invariably, the size of the host was found to influence the parasite distribution pattern. It was observed that the prevalence rate showed an increase with increase in size of the fish. This was discussed on the basis of food habits of the host, along with other aspects An attempt was made in chapter three to study the histopathological effects of‘ the various parasites on their respective sites of attachments on host Fishes. It was found that except Rhadinorhyhchugs indicus, all other parasites produced damages of varying intensity, in the form of hypertrophy, rhyperplasia, haemorrhage, tissue disruption and ulcers. Interestingly, E. indicus, an acantho— cephalid with a powerful proboscis for attachment was found not to cause any serious damage to the intestine of the host Fish. All these aspects are included in the third and final chapter of the thesis.

The major objective of the thesis is essentially to evolve and apply certain computational procedures to evaluate the structure and properties of some simple polyatomic molecules making use of spectroscopic data available from the literature. It must be said that though there is dwindling interest in recent times in such analyses, there exists tremendous scope and utility for attempting such calculations as the precision and reliability of'experimental techniques in spectroscopy have increased vastly due to enormous sophistication of the instruments used for these measurements. In the present thesis an attempt is made to extract maximum amount of information regarding the geometrical structure and interatmic forces of simple molecules from the experimental data on microwave and infrared spectra of these molecules

A perusal of the literature shows that most of the earlier works on the ecology and productivity from the Indian waters have been confined to the estuarine ecosystms and contiguous neritic and oceanic water bodies. Although some information is available on certain aspects of the envirornental parameters from the ‘coastal lagoon ecosystem‘, there is hardly any indepth study on the ecological and productivity problems from "derlict saline lagoonal environment" in India . In view of this, the researcher undertook a study on the subject "ecology and productivity“ of a typical “coastal saline lagoon"(Pilla;headan lagoon) situated along the southeast coast of India for a period of two years!-N11, 1982 to June, 1984) , and the results of the investigations are embodied in the present thesis entitled "studies on the ecology and productivity of saline lagoon‘.

Studies on parasitic copepods from freshwater fishes are still in its infancy. In recent years, there- is a renewed enthusiasm in the study of freshwater fish parasites due to rapidly increasing aquaculture practices. The importance of diseases and their control assumes great significance because of the adverse impact of diseases on fish production and its economy. Copepods are one of the most harmful parasites of freshwater fishes. Reports on the damages caused by copepod parasites from different parts on the world are increasing alarmingly. But the information on parasitic copepods of freshwater fishes in India is quite meagre. Knowledge regarding this group of parasites, their Biology and pathology from Kerala. is lacking. The thesis consists of five chapters. The first chapter is a general introduction which deals with the review of literature on various aspects of parasitic copepods viz; systematics, life history, host-parasite relationship, ecology, pathogenicity, prophylaxis and control measures. Systematics of parasitic copepods of freshwater fishes collected during the present study forms the second chapter. The third chapter deals with the life cycle study of the new Lernaeid copepod, Lernaea osphronemi. The fourth chapter contains host-parasite relationship. ecology and treatment of ‘the’ new species of Lernaea On Osphronemus goramy. General observations and a summary of the entire work constitute the fifth chapter

Plankton community, drawn from a vary wide variety of animal phyla, formed the basic food supply of marine life and indicators of water mass. The term meroplankton generally referred to that portion of the zooplankton which is transient in nature, remaining rest of their lives in the nektonic or benthic environment. This group was selected for intensive studies, considering the role of meroplankton in the economy of the sea and the scarcity of literature on them from the Indian Ocean. The preser .udy besides providing information regarding the fixation and preservation !e _ iniques and biochemical aspects of tropical meroplankton, also consolidates information regarding their zoogeography in the Indian Ocean region, with a view to amplifying the limited information available from this area. The distribution studies are based on the collections made during the International Indian Ocean Expedition (1960-65), whereas the material for preservation and biochemical studies was collected from the coastal waters during 1968-1978. Salient features:- 2% of formaldehyde buffered with 2% borax, added to the plankton in the ratio of 9:1 was found the best fixative. On fixation the plankton underwent shrinkage due to loss of 15 to 87% water. Addition of antioxidants prevented colour fading. Narcotization by different specific reagents prior to fixation reduced distortions due to violent reaction and improved morphological conditions. One percent formaldehyde solution in sea water buffered with borax or neutralised with calcium carbonate perfectly preserved majority of meroplankton. Equally good was one percent propylene phenoxetol buffered with borax. Biochemical compostion of vaioous taxa showed variations according to their age class, size groups metamorphosing stage, feeding mechanism, type of organism fed and time of collection. General distribution studies of 4 meroplankton taxa - Anthozoan larvae, cirripedia larvae, sipunculoid larvae and gastropod larvae stowed abundance in the coastal areas especially during the SW monsoon period. Based on the larval distribution different zoo-geographical areas in the Indian Ocean are differentiated.

At present, there is paucity of information regarding the breeding biology, especially from southeastern region, which differs in its climatic features from northeastern coastal areas, where some attempts have been made to study the biology of the fish, though not documented in detail (Jhingran and Natarajan, I969; Patnaik and Jena, 1976; Kowtal, 1977; Roy e_t _a_l_., I977). The present work, first to undertake detailed investigation into reproductive aspects of the fish from India is not only confined to biology, but extend to the study on histological as well as physiological changes in the processes associated with natural reproductive cycle. The main objective of the study is to develop a background for the standardisation of subsequent artificial propagation techniques for the Sea Dass The thesis is presented in three chapters. The first chapter; general introduction, surveys the literature pertaining to the status of research on Lates calcarifer with specific reference to reproduction and acquaculture. The second chapter entitled, materials and methods gives description regarding collection of specimens as well as samples in addition to the various analytical methodologies employed during the study.

Lipids constitute a significant portion of the biomass of earth and lipolytic enzymes play a very important role in lipid turn over. Apart from their biological significance, lipolytic enzymes are also very important in the fields of nutrition, food technology, medicine and preparative and analytical lipid biochemistry. Recent developments in the study of proteins and enzymes have largely benefited the study of lipolytic enzymes, that some of these enzymes were isolated in pure form. Even today there is a continuous search for new and potent sources of these lipolytic enzymes. The zest for elucidating the structure and mechanism of action of the enzymes obtained in pure form for biochemist still remains unabated. The literature shows no record of such an effort for the study of lipases from marine sources. The fact that many fishes like oil sardine, mackerel, cat fish, seer etc. contains large amounts of lipid shows the possibility of the existence of lipases in significant amounts necessitating their exhaustive study. Such a study will, not only provide alternate sources for lipase but also will provide methods to curb lipolysis and the resultant rancidity and off flavor development in fish and fishery products.

The study of simple chaotic maps for non-equilibrium processes in statistical physics has been one of the central themes in the theory of chaotic dynamical systems. Recently, many works have been carried out on deterministic diffusion in spatially extended one-dimensional maps This can be related to real physical systems such as Josephson junctions in the presence of microwave radiation and parametrically driven oscillators. Transport due to chaos is an important problem in Hamiltonian dynamics also. A recent approach is to evaluate the exact diffusion coefficient in terms of the periodic orbits of the system in the form of cycle expansions. But the fact is that the chaotic motion in such spatially extended maps has two complementary aspects- - diffusion and interrnittency. These are related to the time evolution of the probability density function which is approximately Gaussian by central limit theorem. It is noticed that the characteristic function method introduced by Fujisaka and his co-workers is a very powerful tool for analysing both these aspects of chaotic motion. The theory based on characteristic function actually provides a thermodynamic formalism for chaotic systems It can be applied to other types of chaos-induced diffusion also, such as the one arising in statistics of trajectory separation. It was noted that there is a close connection between cycle expansion technique and characteristic function method. It was found that this connection can be exploited to enhance the applicability of the cycle expansion technique. In this way, we found that cycle expansion can be used to analyse the probability density function in chaotic maps. In our research studies we have successfully applied the characteristic function method and cycle expansion technique for analysing some chaotic maps. We introduced in this connection, two classes of chaotic maps with variable shape by generalizing two types of maps well known in literature.

The preceding discussion and review of literature show that studies on gear selectivity have received great attention, while gear efficiency studies do not seem to have received equal consideration. In temperate waters, fishing industry is well organised and relatively large and well equipped vessels and gear are used for commercial fishing and the number of species are less; whereas in tropics particularly in India, small scale fishery dominates the scene and the fishery is multispecies operated upon by nmltigear. Therefore many of the problems faced in India may not exist in developed countries. Perhaps this would be the reason for the paucity of literature on the problems in estimation of relative efficiency. Much work has been carried out in estimating relative efficiency (Pycha, 1962; Pope, 1963; Gulland, 1967; Dickson, 1971 and Collins, 1979). The main subject of interest in the present thesis is an investigation into the problems in the comparison of fishing gears. especially in using classical test procedures with special reference to the prevailing fishing practices (that is. with reference to the catch data generated by the existing system). This has been taken up with a view to standardizing an approach for comparing the efficiency of fishing gear. Besides this, the implications of the terms ‘gear efficiency‘ and ‘gear selectivity‘ have been examined and based on the commonly used selectivity model (Holt, 1963), estimation of the ratio of fishing power of two gear has been considered. An attempt to determine the size of fish for which a gear is most efficient.has also been made. The work has been presented in eight chapters

Ion-exchange chromatography has emerged as a practical and rapid method of separation and analysis. A review of literature on chelating resins reveals that eventhough investigations on highly selective resins are intensively pursued from early 1940s, such resins are still insufficiently used in analytical chemistry and process technology. This is mainly due to the complexity of their synthesis and high cost. In this context, it is worthwhile to develop novel chelating resins which are specific or at least selective towards a group of metal ions. Synthesis, characterization and analytical applications of two such resins are presented in this thesis.

In the present work, studies on vulcanization, rheology and reinforcement of natural rubber latex with special reference to accelerator combinations, surface active agents and gamma irradiation have been undertaken. In vulcanization, the choice of vulcanization system, the extent and mc-zie of vulcanization and network structure of the vulcanizate are important factors contributing to the overall quality of the product. The vulcanization system may be conventional type using elemental sulfur or a system involving sulfur donors. The latter type is used mainly in the manufacture of heat resistant products. For improving the technical properties of the products such as modulus and tensile strength, different accelerator combinations are used. It is known that accelerators have a strong effect on the physical properties of rubber vulcanizates. A perusal of the literature indicates that fundamental studies on the above aspects of latex technology are very limited. Thereforea systematic study on vulcanization, rheology and reinforcement of natural rubber latex with reference to the effect of accelerator combinations, surface active agents and gamma irradiation has been undertaken. The preparation and evaluation of some products like latex thread was also undertaken as a part of the study. The thesis consists of six chapter

Extensive investigations on the distribution and biology of skipjack tuna are available but less is known of the bait fishes on which this fishery depends and what is known is inadequate, fragmentary and of cursory nature. The information available on tuna livebait fishes of Lakshadweep are mainly cofined to short term surverys aimed at estimating theiravailability and abundance. Reports on the biology of a few species from Minicoy are also present in the literature. This study was, therefore, prompted by a paucity of information on 1) the livebits of Minicoy, 2) livebait fishery of the northern islands and 3) knowledge of livebait ecology
