We have numerically studied the behavior of a two-mode Nd-YAG laser with an intracavity KTP crystal. It is found that when the parameter, which is a measure of the relative orientations of the KTP crystal with respect to the Nd-YAG crystal, is varied continuously, the output intensity fluctuations change from chaotic to stable behavior through a sequence of reverse period doubling bifurcations. The graph of the intensity in the X-polarized mode against that in the Y-polarized mode shows a complex pattern in the chaotic regime. The Lyapunov exponent is calculated for the chaotic and periodic regions.

The effect of coupling two chaotic Nd:YAG lasers with intracavity KTP crystal for frequency doubling is numerically studied for the case of the laser operating in three longitudinal modes. It is seen that the system goes from chaotic to periodic and then to steady state as the coupling constant is increased. The intensity time series and phase diagrams are drawn and the Lyapunov characteristic exponent is calculated to characterize the chaotic and periodic regions.

In this thesis we have presented some aspects of the nonlinear dynamics of Nd:YAG lasers including synchronization, Hopf bifurcation, chaos control and delay induced multistability. We have chosen diode pumped Nd:YAG laser with intracavity KTP crystal operating with two mode and three mode output as our model system.Different types of orientation for the laser cavity modes were considered to carry out the studies. For laser operating with two mode output we have chosen the modes as having parallel polarization and perpendicular polarization. For laser having three mode output, we have chosen them as two modes polarized parallel to each other while the third mode polarized orthogonal to them.

Dynamics of Nd:YAG laser with intracavity KTP crystal operating in two parallel polarized modes is investigated analytically and numerically. System equilibrium points were found out and the stability of each of them was checked using Routh–Hurwitz criteria and also by calculating the eigen values of the Jacobian. It is found that the system possesses three equilibrium points for (Ij, Gj), where j = 1, 2. One of these equilibrium points undergoes Hopf bifurcation in output dynamics as the control parameter is increased. The other two remain unstable throughout the entire region of the parameter space. Our numerical analysis of the Hopf bifurcation phenomena is found to be in good agreement with the analytical results. Nature of energy transfer between the two modes is also studied numerically.

Microwave ceramic dielectric resonators (DRs) based on RETiNbO6 (RE = Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Y, and Yb) have been prepared using the conventional solid -state ceramic route. The DR samples are characterized using XRD and SEM methods. The microwave dielectric properties are measured using resonant methods and a net work analyzer . The ceramics based on Ce, Pr, Nd, and Sin have dielectric constants in the range 32-54 and positive coefficient of thermal variation of resonant frequency (r,). The ceramics based on Gd, Tb, Dy, Y. and Yb have dielectric constants in the range 19-22 and negative Tf

Microwave dielectric ceramics based on RETiTaO6 (RE = La, Cc, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Y, Er, Yb, Al, and In) were prepared using a conventional solid-state ceramic route. The structure and microstructure of the samples were analyzed using x-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy techniques. The sintered samples were characterized in the microwave frequency region. The ceramics based on Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, and Dy, which crystallize in orthorhombic aeschynite structure, had a relatively high dielectric constant and positive T f while those based on Ho, Er, and Yb, with orthorhombic euxenite structure, had a low dielectric constant and negative Tf. The RETiTaO6 ceramics had a high-quality factor. The dielectric constant and unit cell volume of the ceramics increased with an increase in ionic radius of the rare-earth ions, but density decreased with it. The value of Tf increased with an increase in RE ionic radii, and a change in the sign of Tf occurred when the ionic radius was between 0.90 and 0.92 A. The results indicated that the boundary of the aeschynite to euxenite morphotropic phase change lay between DyTiTaO6 and HoTiTaO6. Low-loss ceramics like ErTiTaO6 (Er = 20.6, Qxf = 85,500), EuTiTaO6 (Er = 41.3, Qxf = 59,500), and YTiTaO6 (Er = 22.1, Q„xf = 51,400) are potential candidates for dielectric resonator applications

The microwave dielectric properties of ZnAl2O4 spinels were investigated and their properties were tailored by adding different mole fractions of Ti02. The samples were synthesized using the mixed oxide rout.e. The phase purity and crystal structure were identified using X-ray diffraction technique. The sintered specimens were characterized in the microwave frequency range (3-13 GHz). The ZnA12O4 ceramics exhibited interesting dielectric properties (dielectric constant (e,.) = 8.5, unloaded quality factor (Q.) = 4590 at 12.27 GHz and temperature coefficient of resonant frequency (Tf) = -79 ppm/°C). Addition of Ti02 into the spinel improved its properties and the Tf approached zero for 0.83ZnAl2O4- 0.17TiO2• This temperature compensated composition has excellent microwave dielectric properties (Cr _ 12.67, Q, = 9950 at 10.075 GHz) which can be exploited for microwave substrate applications

Microwave dielectric resonators (DRs) based on Ba(B1,2Nbi/2)03 [B' = La, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Y, Yb, and In] complex perovskites have been prepared by conventional solid state ceramic route. The dielectric properties (relative permittivity, Er; quality factor, Q; and resonant frequency, rr) of the ceramics have been measured in the frequency range 4-6 GHz using resonance methods. The resonators have relatively high dielectric constant in the range 36-45, high quality factor and small temperature variation of resonant frequency. The dielectric properties are found to depend on the tolerance factor (t), ionic radius (r), and lattice parameter (ap)

An efficient one-pot synthesis of two new heterocyclic perimidines 4-(2,3-dihydro-1H-perimidin-2-yl)-2-methoxyphenol and 2-(quinoxalin-2-yl)-2,3-dihydro-1H-perimidine in good yields is presented. This methodology provides a simple, straightforward synthetic route to these interesting classes of heterocycles. Crystal structure, solvatochromism and antibacterial activity of these organic compounds are discussed.

Complete thermal characterization of liquid crystal mixtures in the smectic phase consisting of various relative volume fractions of cholesterol and 1-hexadecanol have been carried out using the photoacoustic technique. Thermal diffusivity values of these liquid crystal mixtures are evaluated using the open cell photoacoustic technique whereas the thermal effusivity value is measured using the conventional photoacoustic technique. From the measured values of these transient thermophysical parameters, the thermal conductivity and heat capacity of the sample under investigation are calculated. Analyses of the results show that all the thermophysical parameters depend strongly on the volume fraction of the constituents. Results are interpreted in terms of enhanced hydrogen bonding and the consequent enhancement in cohesive thermal energy transport with increasing volume fraction of 1-hexadecanol

We report on a laser induced photoacoustic study of the nematic-to-isotropic transition in certain commercial nematic liquid crystal mixtures, namely BL001, BL002, BL032 and BL035. A simple analysis of the experimental data using the Rosencwaig–Gersho theory shows that the heat capacities of all these compounds exhibit a sharp peak as the temperature of the sample is varied across the transition region. Also, substantial differences in the photoacoustic signal amplitudes in nematic and isotropic phases have been noticed for all the mixtures. The increased light scattering property of the nematic phase may be the reason for the enhanced photoacoustic signal amplitude in this phase.
