The main purpose of this thesis is to study properties of La2/3Cai/3Mn03, both polycrystalline
ceramics and thin films. This material has striking related electrical and
magnetic properties. Thin films show colossal negative magnetoresistance (CMR) near
transition from an insulating to a metallic state accompanied closely by transition from
a paramagnetic to a ferromagnetic state. The double exchange mechanism (DE) and the
Jahn-Teller deformations play an important role in CMR effect. Applied pressure has a
very similar effect as does an applied magnetic field, except, at low temperatures (T

The "x-y Coriolis Coupling Theory" as presented by Dilauro and Mills (1966) is reformulated and extended to the determination of Raman intensities. Theoretical Raman and Infrared spectra are computed in order to understand the effects due to this coupling in both types of spectra. Both the Infrared and Raman spectra obtained indicate very real effects due to Coriolis coupling. In some of the cases chosen the computed spectra are grossly different from the normal spectra where coupling is absent. Such large effects can greatly impede the interpretation of experimental results. Theoretical spectra therefore aids in the interpretation of experimental results, as is clearly demonstrated in the results of this work.

In this paper, theoretical pedagogical approaches and practical pedagogical approaches are investigated by drawing on English as a Second Language (ESL) teachers’ pedagogical principles and practices, and ESL Chinese students’ second language acquisition and learning needs as they related to improving ESL pedagogy in one university ELP in Ontario. Three experienced ESL teachers were inquired by interviews and 30 ESL Chinese students were surveyed by questionnaires. Based on the mix-method exploratory research design, communicative, task-based, and content-based language teaching approaches are identified and discussed in the light of the interview and questionnaire data.
