Letter - E.C. Schmon to Arthur A. Schmon, 11 & 12 September 1918

Eleanore Celeste describes Arthur's departure for service one year ago. She also discusses a friend, Dick Hart, who was thought to have been a casualty of a torpedoed ship, but is now thought to be safe. She mentions that she will visit Mother Schmon and had played tennis with Gus. The letter is labelled number 159.

The letter begins describes the sadness of Eleanore Celeste after saying goodbye to Arthur. The second part of the letter discusses bank accounts, bills paid, and the budget for the month of December. She also mentions the possibility of a trip to Shelter Bay in the month of December.

The letter begins with discussion of Xmas gifts. Arthur is sending a German helmet souvenir and Eleanore Celeste plans to put it in their den. She then talks about Spanish influenza spreading "there are hundreds of new cases reported every day..." This letter is labelled number 201.

The letter discusses fish that needs to be sold by the couple, but no one is interested because the fish is mostly bone and skin. The second letter mentions they have been married for five months. The first letters are labelled numbers 96 and 97.

Eleanore Celeste mentions that her mother will have to have another eye surgery. There is a membrane over the eye impairing her vision.

Eleanore Celeste mentions the Xmas leave that Arthur Schmon will take. The next part of the letter mentions a couple of friends. One friend is suffering from inflammatory rheumatism and the other friend wants to serve in the military, but his eyesight requires him to stay back in the US. The final portion of the letter appears to be a poem. This letter is labelled number 113.

Eleanore Celeste is currently substituting at Lafayette St. School and she writes "of all the schools that I have substituted in, I like this the best." She hears about the end of the war and tells a story of how she was dancing and jumping when another teacher entered and she was so embarrassed she ran into a closet.

A newspaper clipping included is titled "Roosevelt's Sons hear of Father's death". Eleanore Celeste had spent the previous day in New York with her sister, they had dinner at Shanley's and tea at Shrafts. The letter is labelled number 214.
