School Board report, Bertie Township, January 13, 1848

Dexter Deverardo settled in the Niagara District around 1834. In 1842, he was elected to the District Council. He served in this position until around 1848, when he became Superintendent of Education for the Niagara District. He subsequently served as county Registrar (appointed in1852), Registrar of the Surrogate Court for Welland (1856), and served as county clerk until 1873.

Warrant (1 page, handwritten copy) that a complaint was presented to Edmund Riselay, Justice of the Peace in Bertie by Henry Nelles, Justice of the Peace in Niagara against William Wintermute and Benjamin Wright of Bertie by Joseph Lindeberry of Clinton regarding the suspicion of Wintermute and Wright stealing wheat from the Lindeberry barn. Benjamin Wright seemed the guiltier of the two and therefore it is requested that he be brought before a Justice of the Peace to be examined. This document is stained, but this does not affect the text, April 4, 1837.

Frederick Sager letter, 1847

The letter was intended to communicate to Dexter D’Everado, Supt. Of Niagara District Schools, that School Section No. 6 in the Township of Bertie had elected school trustees on 12 January 1847. The trustees were Thomas Shedding, Luke Lee and Frederick Sager, Chairman.

Hugh Alexander Papers, 1811-1816 [photocopy]

Hugh Alexander, b. 1780 arrived in Niagara shortly after his birth. He attended school and later apprenticed as a clerk. In 1797 he was granted 200 acres of land in Bertie township and became a merchant and trader in Fort Erie. He was the owner of a sailing vessel, the Chippawa, which he used to transport goods in the area. The ship was lost and/or confiscated as a result of War of 1812 skirmishes on Lake Erie. By 1812 Hugh Alexander was in business together with his brother Ephraim. The Alexander’s storehouse, store and house were burned by the British military when they abandoned Fort Erie ahead of the invading American military in late May 1813. At the time of the burning, Hugh Alexander was engaged as a Lieutenant with the 3rd Lincoln Militia. Prior to this Hugh Alexander had established a second mercantile in Stamford, opposite the green. Misfortune was to strike at this location as well when the British military abandoned the whole of the Niagara area to the invading American forces and the Stamford location was looted. After the end of the hostilities Alexander went on to rebuild his storehouse in Fort Erie and to re-establish his store in Stamford. Indenture of bargain and sale between Jacob Huffman and Margaret Huffman formerly of Bertie Township but moved to Grand Island, New York to Benjamin Troup and John Troup, both of Bertie Township regarding approximately 50 acres of land in Lot no. 3 of the 5th Concession in the Township of Bertie - instrument no. 2295. This was registered on June 25, 1845 in Book E folios 321, 322 and 323, June 25, 1845.

Bond (1 page, printed) between Archibald Johnston of the Township of Bertie to William Dickson of Niagara and Thomas Clark of Queenston (regarding the Last Will and Testament of Robert Hamilton) for payment of 75 pounds to be made to Dickson and Clark, June 7, 1821.

Township of Crowland. Petition and letter regarding a land dispute, 1854, 1855.

Consists of a petition by residents of the Township of Crowland, and a letter addressed to the Hon. Commissioner of Crown Lands. Both items concern a dispute of a land survey. The petition is dated May 26, 1854, and is by inhabitants of the fourth concession in the Township of Crowland. The petition is signed by 9 residents. The names include James Cook (?), Samuel Buchner, James Rock (?), Wm. Vanalstine (?), Seth Skinner, Daniel Holcomb, P. Skinner (?), Henry Buchner, and Cornelius McHay (?). The letter is dated July 20, 1855 and is addressed to the Hon. Commissioner of Crown Lands, Quebec. It is signed by Arthur Johnston, Town Reeve, Bertie.

Petrography and geochemistry of the McArthur Township area, Ontario /

The McArthur Township area in the Archean Abitibi Belt of northeast Ontario contains northwesterly trending volcanic rocks which are located on a limb of a large syncline. The axial trace of the syncline passes through the adjacent Douglas Township. The Archean volcanic rocks and associated sedimentary rocks are intruded and deformed by two large plutons and a few smaller hypabyssal intrusions. A petrographic and geochemical study of the Precambrian rocks exposed 1n the study area was undertaken in order to investigate the metamorphic grade and geochemical characteristics of the rocks. All the samples were studied with the microscope and analysis of 20 major and trace elements were determined on a selection of the less altered specimens by x-ray fluorescence. Three different periods of igneous activity have occurred in the study area. The first two periods were dominated by volcanic extrusive rocks accompanied by gabbroic sills. The third cycle is the diapiric intrusion of the granitic plutons and subsequent metamorphism of the older rocks to the low to medium grade. Two periods of sedimentation are also recognized in the study area which occurred after the first and second cycle of volcanism. Chemically, the lavas are subdivided into three main associations: (1) The komatiitic association is characterized by high MgO, high Ni, low Ti02 and a low FeO*/(FeO* + MgO) ratio. They occupy the base of each volcanic cycle and some of the flows exhibit spinifex textures. (2) The tholeiitic association displays distinct iron and titanium enrichment trends in the intermediate membersor -i r (3) The calc-alkaline association contains low FeO* and TI02 and high Ni contents relative to modern calc-alkaline types. They are formed at the end of each cycle of volcanism and overlie the tholeiitic flows. All three associations of the first volcanic cycle are exposed in the study area, while the second cycle is represented by a komatiltic sequence. The volcanic rocks were possibly formed by multiple partial melting of the Archean mantle to produce parental magmas under various P - T conditions.

Grantham Township Records Collection

Item one is a minute book for Grantham Township, Ontario. It records the proceedings of meetings from 1818-1854 and the names of parish and town officers from 1818 to 1842. Names include: Chisholm, Ball, Steele, TenBroeck, Shipman, Laraway, McKerney, Adams, Pawling, Merritt, Rolls, Robertson, Lampman, Phelps, Darling. Also notes the laws agreed upon for the period - mainly dealing with livestock. Item two is a report and evidence of boundary line disputes in the Township of Grantham. Includes affidavits from witnesses to the boundary dispute and a report to the Honourable the Commissioner of Crown Lands Quebec. The affadavits were recorded in 1844, and transcribed into the folio in 1852. Lewis A. Ball was the commissioner before whom the affadavits were sworn and duly recorded. Includes field notes by Frederic F. Passmore, Provincial land surveyor. The boundary lines in dispute were 1. between the 2nd and 3rd Concessions, from Lot no. 1 to Lot no. 5, 2. between the 4th and 5th concessions, from lot no. 4 to lot no. 5 and 3. between lots 14 in the 9th and 10th concession of the Township of Grantham.
