Permit to Leave Canada, Simon E. Hansler - September 14, 1918

A permit to leave Canada requested by Simon E. Hansler September 14, 1918. The request states that he is permitted to leave Canada on or before December 1, 1918. The document includes his date of birth, eye colour, hair colour, height, occupation and a photograph. Also included on the form, four names to refer for identification. The document states that he is planning to visit relatives in the United States for "a few days".

Agenda for the fifty-third annual meeting of the National Council of Women of Canada, 1946

The National Council of Women of Canada was founded in 1893 in Toronto to address the need for societal reform, such as better education for women and women’s suffrage. The first president was Lady Ishbel Aberdeen, the wife of the Governor General. The group’s early efforts focused on improving conditions for women prisoners, women working in factories, and women immigrants. The efforts of the Council also helped to achieve the passing of the Act to Confer the Electoral Franchise Upon Women in 1918. Members of the Council have advocated for the welfare of children, the family, the community, the environment and equal pay for work of equal value. The Council continues to be concerned with these issues, and presents an annual brief to the Prime Minister and Members of the Cabinet, as well as occasionally serving on special advisory committees.

Lightning Fastener Co. Ltd. was a zipper manufacturer located on Niagara Street in St. Catharines. It was founded by Gideon Sundback, the inventor of the modern fastener. Sundback was born in Sweden, but settled in the United States in 1905. It was here that he designed and patented a “separable fastener” in 1913. Although he lived in Hoboken, New Jersey, he decided to establish a manufacturing facility for his invention in Canada, choosing St. Catharines over other locations such as Fort Erie and Hamilton. At the height of its success, the company employed more than 500 people and produced more than 50 million zippers annually. Over time, the company had difficulty remaining competitive and was forced to close in 1981.

Secret Orders - 16 June, 1918

A set of instructions marked "Secret" for Lt. Col. F.C. McCordick, Commanding 15th Garrison Battalion Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry. The handwritten document is dated 16 June, 1918 and is Copy No.1. The document describes the role of the Battalion in the event of an enemy attack.

Two letters from E.C. Schmon to Arthur A. Schmon. The first letter is a poem titled "Mystery", the second recalls happy times together the previous year. She describes boating to Keansburg, dinner at a hotel, meeting family at Grand Central Station etc. It is labelled the 146th letter.

Letter - E.C. Schmon to Arthur A. Schmon, 29 & 30 January 1918

In this letter Eleanore Celeste talks about attending Church, magazines and her interest in education. She states "the more I learn, the thirstier I am for knowledge." The second letter mentions the Philips estate turning into a seniors facility for women after much talk about it possibly turning into a hospital for wounded officers. This letter is labelled number 50.

This letter describes outings with Gus and going to the Broad Theatre to see the play "Oh! Boy". She also mentions her friend Margaret who will be married in Atlanta. This letter is labelled number 158.

This letter mentions that Eleanore Celeste has not heard from Arthur in nearly a month. She hopes that this means he will be coming home soon from France. It is labelled number 175.

Letter - E.C. Schmon to Arthur A. Schmon, 11 & 12 September 1918

Eleanore Celeste describes Arthur's departure for service one year ago. She also discusses a friend, Dick Hart, who was thought to have been a casualty of a torpedoed ship, but is now thought to be safe. She mentions that she will visit Mother Schmon and had played tennis with Gus. The letter is labelled number 159.
