Letter - E.C. Schmon to Arthur A. Schmon, 31 May 1918

The letter reads: " Darling Artie, I have just been reading the war news and Oh! how terribly discouraging it is. This mornings paper says the allies have yieldes on a forty-mile front, that Soissons had been taken by the Germans and Rheims is in grave peril and may fall at any moment. And think - only the third day of the new drive, too. I know that everything will end all right, but it surely has an awful affect on you, to read these reports. Of course no one knows, but it is the opinion of people in military circles here, that the war will last two years more at least; and in all probability five or six. Cheerful prospects. Yes? So you see, Artie dear, that you must come home on a leave, the very first opportunity you have. Understand? I am going down to Red Cross now, to do a little work. Tonight Mrs. Mizger, Doris and the two Braun girls are coming down. They want to see the rest of the pretty things that are in our sacred chest, and I just love to them, too. There are days when I have them out three or four times and I picture each thing in our little nest - after the war is over - - (Joy!!) Au revoir, honey-bunch boy. All the love, hugs and kisses that you desire. Always your, Wifie. P.S. And still no mail. Boo! Hoo! L."

Eleanore Celeste mentions a lecture her sister attended about a man who discovered his friend was a German propagandist. She wants to go to "France as a nurse, or to do canteen work, etc." but has just heard that if she goes and then marries an American soldier, she will be sent home. Eleanore Celeste asks if it is true that "every month four men are being selected from each regiment to be sent back to the States as instructors". The letter is labelled number 182.

Eleanore Celeste is currently substituting at Lafayette St. School and she writes "of all the schools that I have substituted in, I like this the best." She hears about the end of the war and tells a story of how she was dancing and jumping when another teacher entered and she was so embarrassed she ran into a closet.

Eleanore Celeste is writing to Arthur from Whippang, New Jersey. She describes the beautiful woods, fields and mountains. The letter is labelled number 148.

Eleanore Celeste mentions that planes were performing stunts and bands were playing so they made their way to Branch Brook Park to see the New Jersey State Militia Reserve. She also mentions plans to go to the movies and see "The Queen of the Sea" starring Annette Kellerman.

The letter is written on Waldorf-Astoria stationary. She is in the city with her Auntie and they plan to go to dinner at the Martinique. The letter is labelled number 64.

She mentions another job she has done as a substitute teacher. She then goes on to mention all of the upcoming social outings (showers, weddings) over the the next few weeks. The letter is labelled number 165.

Eleanore Celeste writes about her outing to the movies. She talks about their wedding and asks whether they can have a "double right marriage". She describes friends who have been married recently and both the bride and groom wear rings. She also mentions that Colonel McCormick had tried to call her, but she wasn't there to speak with him.

Eleanore Celeste is teaching at Lafayette Street School. She states that she likes "this school better than any I've substituted in." She writes about a boy who could not attend school because he had no shoes and the family was living in terrible conditions with barely anything to eat. She has also read some articles about men returning from France and she is hoping that Arthur will return soon. The letter is labelled number 189.

Eleanore Celeste has had some treatment for inflammation of her eyes. Her eyes have improved so she can resume her letter writing. The letter is labelled number 86.

The first letter mentions Eleanore Celeste has a headache and has been working on "comfort kits". The second letter describes her morning at church, studying and she mentions she expects to do Red Cross work. The letter is labelled number 60.
