Boston Gazette, 13 December 1813 (vol. 39, no. 50) - Newspaper

Volumes of interest were published between 1812 and 1815 with articles about the War of 1812. Issue for Dec. 13, 1813: much of the front page & a portion of page 2 are taken up with the "President's Message" which is signed by him in type at its conclusion: James Madison. Obviously much of the focus of his speech is with the on-going War of 1812 including mention of some significant battles such as Lake Erie, etc.

Message from the President of the United States transmitting documents relative to the execution of the first article of the late treaty between the United States and Great Britain.

"February 7, 1817, ordered to be printed for the use of the Senate." Message addressed to the Senate and dated February 7th, 1817. Consists of the covering letter from the President and a report from the Secretary of State, dated Department of State, February 5th, 1817; which itself consists largely of diplomatic correspondence between the United States and Great Britain Relates to the restitution of captured slaves by the British during the War of 1812-1814.

Message from the President of the United States, Recommending an Immediate Declaration of War Against Great Britain (1812)

"June 1st, 1812. Referred to the Committee on Foreign Relations. June 3d, 1812. Bill reported, declaring war ..."

[British Parliamentary papers], Session 24 November, 1812 - 22 July, 1813. Vol. XIV, Correspondence and treaties with foreign powers.

Most of this volume consists of correspondence between high ranking U.S. and British statesmen. E.g., James Madison, James Monroe, The Marquess Wellesley (brother of Arthur Wellesley, Duke of Wellington). The discussion centers around the War of 1812. Also includes facsimilies of treaties signed between Great Britain and Sweden, Russia and Sicily.

James Monroe letter of marque, ca. 1812

James Monroe (1758-1831) was appointed Secretary of State by President James Madison in 1811. He remained in this position until March, 1817, with the exception of the period from October 1, 1814, to February 28, 1815, when he was ad interim Secretary of State. Monroe encouraged President James Madison and Congress to declare war on Great Britain, feeling it would be the most effective way to change offensive British policies. The United States declared war on June 17, 1812, after which he served as Secretary of War. Monroe later became President of the United States from 1817 until 1824.

John Edminster letter, July 19, 1850

John Edminster was a Baptist missionary born in Cato, New York, in 1820. He was ordained a Pastor in Birmingham, PA, in 1842. He served as Pastor in White Deer, Clinton, Muncy, Derry, Moreland, and Madison, PA. In 1850, he moved to Oregon, Illinois, and established two churches there. He later served at several churches in Iowa, eventually becoming Pastor at Stillman Valley Church and residing at Hale, Ogle Co., Illinois.

The Birthday Scripture Text Book

The Birthday Scripture Text book was published by the Book Society, Bristol. This book is signed by Jane Woodruff, St. Catharines, Ontario, 1872. There is also a label in the book which reads "Suite 1208 Chicago Savings Bank Building State and Madison Streets, Chicago". The book measures 10.5cm x 7cm and has a leather cover with metal trim. The clasp is no longer on the book. Some of the pages are stained and all of the pages are falling out. Many of the pages have handwritten birthday, births and death notices. Commodore Hull Medallion, Poem and Presidential Messages

1 cardboard clam shell case with a bronze medallion in a front portal. The medallion is 6 cm. in circumference with a bust of Commodore Isaac Hull on the face. The medallion was designed by John Reich. A translation of the words inscribed on the front is: “Isaac Hull conquers in July 1812, the skilled by stratagem and in August, the strong in battle” On the back is a ship and the words “Horae Momento Victoria” which translate to “Victory in the space of an hour”. The title on the front of the box has the words “War of 1812, Jonathan Russell, Commodore Hull”. Only 126 of these medallions were estimated to be struck. Also within this collection is a poem written by Jonathan Russell and 2 messages from President James Madison.
