Letter - E.C. Schmon to Arthur A. Schmon, 14 June 1918

Eleanore Celeste has been to visit Arthur Schmon's parents. His father has not been feeling well and takes a week vacation per month. His mother worries because the checks Arthur sends do not come when they should. Eleanore Celeste requests that Arthur write to Washington to have it straightened out. She also mentions her family and who they are visiting over the next week. This letter is labelled number 114.

Eleanore Celeste mentions that she is ill in bed. A doctor diagnosis tonsillitis and she is feeling better and can go back to school. The letter is labelled number 168.

The letter discusses a dress that she will have made and includes a fashion sketch with material done by Eleanore Celeste. She mentions going to the Fox Terminal Theatre to see the war picture "Lest We Forget". She later sees her friend Martha who has found out that her husband as been wounded via telegram from Washington. This letter is labelled number 71.

The letter begins with some confusion as to whether Arthur is returning to the United States. Eleanore Celeste then mentions a benefit concert she was taken to by Mr. and Mrs. Mezger. She mentions she enjoyed the voice of Florence Mulford Hunt. There was also an address by Professor Talcott Williams of Columbia University. Included is an brief death notice from the paper that reads "Fenton, Colonel, Charles W. commandant at Fort Myer, and head of the two camps which turned out national army officers, died today of meningitis". The second part of the letter mentions "dearest, it is a perfect shame that none of you are to be promoted" and "I never heard of anything as unfair, as making D.J. Harris and Jackie Barrett 1st Lieutenants". She then writes out the sonnet "What is Love?" The letter is labelled number 43.

Eleanore Celeste mentions the Xmas leave that Arthur Schmon will take. The next part of the letter mentions a couple of friends. One friend is suffering from inflammatory rheumatism and the other friend wants to serve in the military, but his eyesight requires him to stay back in the US. The final portion of the letter appears to be a poem. This letter is labelled number 113.

This letter is severely damaged and very difficult to read. She mentions shopping in New York city with her sister.

Letter - E.C. Schmon to Arthur A. Schmon, 31 May 1918

The letter reads: " Darling Artie, I have just been reading the war news and Oh! how terribly discouraging it is. This mornings paper says the allies have yieldes on a forty-mile front, that Soissons had been taken by the Germans and Rheims is in grave peril and may fall at any moment. And think - only the third day of the new drive, too. I know that everything will end all right, but it surely has an awful affect on you, to read these reports. Of course no one knows, but it is the opinion of people in military circles here, that the war will last two years more at least; and in all probability five or six. Cheerful prospects. Yes? So you see, Artie dear, that you must come home on a leave, the very first opportunity you have. Understand? I am going down to Red Cross now, to do a little work. Tonight Mrs. Mizger, Doris and the two Braun girls are coming down. They want to see the rest of the pretty things that are in our sacred chest, and I just love to them, too. There are days when I have them out three or four times and I picture each thing in our little nest - after the war is over - - (Joy!!) Au revoir, honey-bunch boy. All the love, hugs and kisses that you desire. Always your, Wifie. P.S. And still no mail. Boo! Hoo! L."

Eleanore Celeste mentions outings with her friend Hilda. She also mentions the list of promotions that she watches for Arthur's name. The letter is labelled number 130.

She reflects on her time with Arthur the year before and asks him to take a leave at Xmas if the war has not ended by then. Eleanore Celeste has been to the movies to see "Pershing's Crusaders".

Eleanore Celeste mentions a lecture her sister attended about a man who discovered his friend was a German propagandist. She wants to go to "France as a nurse, or to do canteen work, etc." but has just heard that if she goes and then marries an American soldier, she will be sent home. The letter is labelled number 139.

Eleanore Celeste asks if it is true that "every month four men are being selected from each regiment to be sent back to the States as instructors". The letter is labelled number 182.

Eleanore Celeste is currently substituting at Lafayette St. School and she writes "of all the schools that I have substituted in, I like this the best." She hears about the end of the war and tells a story of how she was dancing and jumping when another teacher entered and she was so embarrassed she ran into a closet.

Eleanore Celeste is writing to Arthur from Whippang, New Jersey. She describes the beautiful woods, fields and mountains. The letter is labelled number 148.

Eleanore Celeste mentions that planes were performing stunts and bands were playing so they made their way to Branch Brook Park to see the New Jersey State Militia Reserve. She also mentions plans to go to the movies and see "The Queen of the Sea" starring Annette Kellerman.
