Rectangular hollow section (RHS) members are components widely used in engineering applications because of their good-looking, good properties in engineering areas and inexpensive cost comparing to members with other sections. The increasing use of RHS in load bearing structures makes it necessary to analyze the fatigue behavior of the RHS members. In this thesis, concentration will be given to the fatigue behavior of the RHS members under variable amplitude pure torsional loading. For the RHS members, failure will normally occur in the corner region if the welded regions are under full penetration. This is because of the complicated stress components' distributions at the RHScorners, where all of three fracture mechanics modes will happen. Mode I is mainly caused by the residual stresses that caused by the manufacturing process. Modes II and III are caused by the applied torsional loading. Stress based Findleymodel is also used to analyze the stress components. Constant amplitude fatigue tests have been done as well as variable amplitude fatigue tests. The specimens under variable amplitude loading gave longer fatigue lives than those under constant amplitude loading. Results from tests show an S-N curvewith slope around 5.

Concerning process control of batch cooling crystallization the present work focused on the cooling profile and seeding technique. Secondly, the influence of additives on batch-wise precipitation process was investigated. Moreover, a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) model for simulation of controlled batch cooling crystallization was developed. A novel cooling model to control supersaturation level during batch-wise cooling crystallization was introduced. The crystallization kinetics together with operating conditions, i.e. seed loading, cooling rate and batch time, were taken into account in the model. Especially, the supersaturation- and suspension density- dependent secondary nucleation was included in the model. The interaction between the operating conditions and their influence on the control target, i.e. the constant level of supersaturation, were studied with the aid of a numerical solution for the cooling model. Further, the batch cooling crystallization was simulated with the ideal mixing model and CFD model. The moment transformation of the population balance, together with the mass and heat balances, were solved numerically in the simulation. In order to clarify a relationship betweenthe operating conditions and product sizes, a system chart was developed for anideal mixing condition. The utilization of the system chart to determine the appropriate operating condition to meet a required product size was introduced. With CFD simulation, batch crystallization, operated following a specified coolingmode, was studied in the crystallizers having different geometries and scales. The introduced cooling model and simulation results were verified experimentallyfor potassium dihydrogen phosphate (KDP) and the novelties of the proposed control policies were demonstrated using potassium sulfate by comparing with the published results in the literature. The study on the batch-wise precipitation showed that immiscible additives could promote the agglomeration of a derivative of benzoic acid, which facilitated the filterability of the crystal product.

This thesis presents briefly the basic operation and use of centrifugal pumps and parallel pumping applications. The characteristics of parallel pumping applications are compared to circuitry, in order to search analogy between these technical fields. The purpose of studying circuitry is to find out if common software tools for solving circuit performance could be used to observe parallel pumping applications. The empirical part of the thesis introduces a simulation environment for parallel pumping systems, which is based on circuit components of Matlab Simulink —software. The created simulation environment ensures the observation of variable speed controlled parallel pumping systems in case of different controlling methods. The introduced simulation environment was evaluated by building a simulation model for actual parallel pumping system at Lappeenranta University of Technology. The simulated performance of the parallel pumps was compared to measured values of the actual system. The gathered information shows, that if the initial data of the system and pump perfonnance is adequate, the circuitry based simulation environment can be exploited to observe parallel pumping systems. The introduced simulation environment can represent the actual operation of parallel pumps in reasonably accuracy. There by the circuitry based simulation can be used as a researching tool to develop new controlling ways for parallel pumps.

The thesis discusses games and the gaming experience. It is divided into two main sections; the first examines games in general, while the second concentrates exclusively on electronic games. The text approaches games from two distinct directions by looking at both their spatiality and their narrativity at the same time. These two points of view are combined right from the beginning of the text as they are used in conceptualising the nature of the gaming experience. The purpose of the thesis is to investigate two closely related issues concerning both the field of game studies and the nature of games. In regard to studying games, the focus is placed on the juxtaposition of ludology and narratology, which acts as a framework for looking at gaming. In addition to aiming to find out whether or not it is possible to undermine the said state of affairs through the spatiality of games, the text looks at the interrelationships of games and their spaces as well as the role of narratives in those spaces. The thesis is characterised by discussing alternative points of view and its hypothetical nature. During the text, it becomes apparent that the relationship between games and narratives is strongly twofold: on one hand, the player continuously narrativizes the states the game is in while playing, while the narratives residing within the game space form their own partially separate narrative spaces, on the other. These spaces affect the conception the player has of the game states and the events taking place in the game space itself.

Metsäpolttoaineiden käyttö kasvaa lämpö- ja voimalaitoksissa ja mahdollisissa biojalostamoissa. Metsäpolttoaineilla voidaan saavuttaa päästövähennyksiä korvaamalla päästöintensiivisempiä polttoaineita. Metsäpolttoaineen kysynnän kasvu suurkäyttöpaikoilla luo uusia vaatimuksia metsäbiomassan hankintaan. Metsäpolttoaineiden vesitiekuljetuksen sisältämiä logistiikkajärjestelmiä kehittämällä toimitusvarmuutta pystytään parantamaan ja hankintaa laajentamaan kustannustehokkaasti ja ympäristöystävällisesti. Kuljetuskokeilut antoivat uutta tietoa vesitiekuljetuksen sisältämästä hankinnasta. Lastikapasiteetti nykyisen kaltaisessa Eurooppa IIa -suurproomussa vaihtelee 1200 tonnista jopa 1800 tonniin (kosteus 40 %) riippuen tiivistymisestä ja proomun modifiointiasteesta. Metsähakkeen energiatiheys oli suurproomukuljetuksissa keskimäärin 1 MWh/i-m3, joka oli 25 % parempi kuin vertailun hakerekkakuljetuksissa. Vesitiekuljetuksen kustannukset olivat kuljetuskokeiluissa lastauksineen ja purkuineen 0,02 €/MWh/km, ollen noin 20 % ketjun kokonaiskustannuksista. Simuloinnin edullisimpien vesitiekuljetusvaihtoehtojen vaihteluvälin kustannukset olivat vastaavasti 0,013 - 0,026 €/MWh/km. Lastauksen ja purun kustannus oli 0,4 - 0,6 €/MWh ja vesitiekuljetus 0,9 - 2,0 €/MWh (100 km). Ketjun kokonaiskustannukset hakkuutähdehakkeelle vaihtelivat simuloinnin edullisimpien vaihtoehtojen perusteella välillä 10,8 - 12,1 €/MWh (30 km rekka, 100 km proomu). Kuljetusketjujen simuloinnin kustannukset osoittivat proomukuljetusketjun olevan kilpailukykyinen vaihtoehto hakerekkakuljetusketjulle kalustosta ja vuosittaisista käyttötunneista riippuen kuljetusetäisyyden ylittäessä 100 km. Kustannustehokkain ratkaisu vesitiekuljetuksessa saavutettiin pienen aluksen ja suuren kokoluokan proomuyksikön kytkyeellä. Haketus kannattaa toteuttaa ennen proomukuljetuksen osuutta metsähakkeen paremman tiiviyden ja käsiteltävyyden perusteella. Logistiikkajärjestelmiä pitää kehittää tapauskohtaisesti käyttöpaikan tarpeet ja olosuhteet huomioon ottaen. Metsäpolttoaineiden vesitiekuljetuksen sisältämän logistiikan liiketoimintamallien vertailussa arvioitiin vaihtoehtoiset ulkoistetut toimintamallit paremmaksi kuin nykyinen urakointimalli. Tämä mahdollistaa paremman metsähakkeen saatavuuden ja logistiikan tehokkuuden lastausterminaaleissa. Terminaalitoiminnot ja proomukuljetukset lisäävät uusia liiketoimintamahdollisuuksia ja mahdollistavat metsäpolttoaineiden

Porous silicon (PSi) is a promising material to be utilized in drug delivery formulations. The release rate of the drug compound can be controlled by changing the pore properties and surface chemistry of PSi. The loading of a poorly soluble drug into mesoporous silicon particles enhances its dissolution in the body. The drug loading is based on adsorption. The attainable maximum loaded amount depends on the properties of the drug compound and the PSi material, and on the process conditions. The loading solvent also essentially affects the adsorption process. The loading of indomethacin into PSi particles with varying surface modification was studied. Solvent mixtures were applied in the loading, and the loaded samples were analyzed with thermal analysis methods. The best degree of loading was obtained using a mixture of dichloromethane and methanol. The drug loads varied from 7.7 w-% to 26.8 w-%. A disturbing factor in the loading experiments was the tendency of indomethacin to form solvates with the solvents applied. In addition, the physical form and stability of indomethacin loaded in PSi and silica particles were studied using Raman spectroscopy. In the case of silica, the presence of crystalline drug as well as the polymorph form can be detected, but the method proved to be not applicable for PSi particles.

Tällä hetkellä hitsauksen automatisointiaste on hyvin pieni alumiinivenevalmistuksessa. Automatisointiasteen kasvattaminen on ensiarvoisen tärkeää kilpailukyvyn säilyttämiseksi, sekä edelleen nostamiseksi. Automatisointiasteen kasvattamisen esteenä ei ole teknologian puute, vaan suunnitellut tuotteet soveltuvat huonosti robotisoituun hitsaukseen. Lisäksi liitettävien osien tarkkuus on monissa tapauksissa puutteellinen, joten robottihitsaus on monessa tapauksessa mahdotonta. Robottihitsauksessa vaaditaan osien hyvää paikoittamista ja siihen tarvitaan kiinnittimiä. Kuitenkin alumiinivenevalmistuksessa valmistusmäärät ovat sen verran pieniä, että tuotekohtaisia kiinnittimiä ei kannata hankkia tai valmistaa. Siksi kiinnittimiltä vaaditaan joustavuutta ja modulaarisuutta, jotta samalla kiinnittimellä voi hitsata useita vastaavia piirteitä omaavia tuotteita. Tässä työssä tutkittiin modulaarisia kiinnittimiä, edistyneitä kiinnitinsuunnitteluprosesseja, osavalmistustarkkuuksia, tuotemoduloinnin hyödyntämistä ja alumiinin robottihitsauksen erityispiirteitä. Työssä suunniteltiin ja simuloitiin modulaarinen hitsauskiinnitin, jota käytetään tietyn alumiinivenemallin erillisenä osakokoonpanona valmistettavan jäykisterakennekonseptin hitsaamiseen. Suunnittelu ja simulointi tehtiin Delmia V5R20 -ohjelmistolla. Jäykisterakenne on modulaarinen tuoterakenne, jossa käytetään itsepaikoittavia liitoksia helpottamaan osien asettelua ja yksinkertaistamaan kiinnitintä. Kiinnitin soveltuu joustavasti erikokoisten jäykisterakenneosakokoonpanojen valmistukseen. Lisäksi suunniteltua kiinnitintä verrattiin kaupalliseen modulaariseen Demmeler -kiinnitinjärjestelmään. Jäykisterakenteen osakokoonpanon hitsaaminen robotilla lyhentää valmistusaikaa verrattuna nykytilaan, kun osat voidaan asettaa kiinnittimeen nopeasti ja luotettavasti. Samalla jäykisterakenteen tekeminen erillisenä osakokoonpanona lyhentää veneen rungon loppukokoonpanoaikaa ja mahdollistaa hitsausrobotin käytön myös veneen muiden hitsien hitsaamisessa. Modulaarisilla hitsauskiinnittimillä saavutetaan alumiiniveneiden nykyisillä valmistusmäärillä skaalaetuja, joita tuotekohtaisella kiinnittimellä ei voi saavuttaa.

The goal of the thesis was to gain understanding of organizational buying behavior and its effect from the selling perspective and to generate base for verifying customer value propositions for Actiw Oy. The first objective was to discover the current buying decision criteria of current customers to understand the buying motives which had led to the investment initially. Second objective was to understand how the buying decision criteria and customer experiences can be turned into customer value propositions. Research was done with 16 customer interviews, which were focused on obtaining the information on the buying center and the value of the solution. Thesis goes through the main theories of OBB and the theory behind customer value management. Based on customer interviews, the currently used customer value propositions were tested and categorized into points-of-parities and points-ofdifferences. The interviews confirmed customer behavior in new task and modified rebuy situations and also gave confirmation to the internally done customer value propositions. Main finding of the study was, that as the value propositions are possible to present more specifically to each new case instead of using all benefits at the same time.

The overall objective of the thesis is to design a robot chassis frame which is a bearing structure of a vehicle supporting all mechanical components and providing structure and stability. Various techniques and scientific principles were used to design a chassis frame.Design principles were applied throughout the process. By using Solid-Works software,virtual models was made for chassis frame. Chassis frame of overall dimension 1597* 800*950 mm3 was designed. Center of mass lieson 1/3 of the length from front wheel at height 338mm in the symmetry plane. Overall weight of the chassis frame is 80.12kg. Manufacturing drawing is also provided. Additionally,structural analysis was done in FEMAP which gives the busting result for chassis design by taking into consideration stress and deflection on different kind of loading resembling real life case. On the basis of simulated result, selected material was verified. Resulting design is expected to perform its intended function without failure. As a suggestion for further research, additional fatigue analysis and proper dynamic analysis can be conducted to make the study more robust.

In this study, finite element analyses and experimental tests are carried out in order to investigate the effect of loading type and symmetry on the fatigue strength of three different non-load carrying welded joints. The current codes and recommendations do not give explicit instructions how to consider degree of bending in loading and the effect of symmetry in the fatigue assessment of welded joints. The fatigue assessment is done by using effective notch stress method and linear elastic fracture mechanics. Transverse attachment and cover plate joints are analyzed by using 2D plane strain element models in FEMAP/NxNastran and Franc2D software and longitudinal gusset case is analyzed by using solid element models in Abaqus and Abaqus/XFEM software. By means of the evaluated effective notch stress range and stress intensity factor range, the nominal fatigue strength is assessed. Experimental tests consist of the fatigue tests of transverse attachment joints with total amount of 12 specimens. In the tests, the effect of both loading type and symmetry on the fatigue strength is studied. Finite element analyses showed that the fatigue strength of asymmetric joint is higher in tensile loading and the fatigue strength of symmetric joint is higher in bending loading in terms of nominal and hot spot stress methods. Linear elastic fracture mechanics indicated that bending reduces stress intensity factors when the crack size is relatively large since the normal stress decreases at the crack tip due to the stress gradient. Under tensile loading, experimental tests corresponded with finite element analyzes. Still, the fatigue tested joints subjected to bending showed the bending increased the fatigue strength of non-load carrying welded joints and the fatigue test results did not fully agree with the fatigue assessment. According to the results, it can be concluded that in tensile loading, the symmetry of joint distinctly affects on the fatigue strength. The fatigue life assessment of bending loaded joints is challenging since it depends on whether the crack initiation or propagation is predominant.
