This work deals with the cooling of high-speed electric machines, such as motors and generators, through an air gap. It consists of numerical and experimental modelling of gas flow and heat transfer in an annular channel. Velocity and temperature profiles are modelled in the air gap of a high-speed testmachine. Local and mean heat transfer coefficients and total friction coefficients are attained for a smooth rotor-stator combination at a large velocity range. The aim is to solve the heat transfer numerically and experimentally. The FINFLO software, developed at Helsinki University of Technology, has been used in the flow solution, and the commercial IGG and Field view programs for the grid generation and post processing. The annular channel is discretized as a sector mesh. Calculation is performed with constant mass flow rate on six rotational speeds. The effect of turbulence is calculated using three turbulence models. The friction coefficient and velocity factor are attained via total friction power. The first part of experimental section consists of finding the proper sensors and calibrating them in a straight pipe. After preliminary tests, a RdF-sensor is glued on the walls of stator and rotor surfaces. Telemetry is needed to be able to measure the heat transfer coefficients at the rotor. The mean heat transfer coefficients are measured in a test machine on four cooling air mass flow rates at a wide Couette Reynolds number range. The calculated values concerning the friction and heat transfer coefficients are compared with measured and semi-empirical data. Heat is transferred from the hotter stator and rotor surfaces to the coolerair flow in the air gap, not from the rotor to the stator via the air gap, althought the stator temperature is lower than the rotor temperature. The calculatedfriction coefficients fits well with the semi-empirical equations and precedingmeasurements. On constant mass flow rate the rotor heat transfer coefficient attains a saturation point at a higher rotational speed, while the heat transfer coefficient of the stator grows uniformly. The magnitudes of the heat transfer coefficients are almost constant with different turbulence models. The calibrationof sensors in a straight pipe is only an advisory step in the selection process. Telemetry is tested in the pipe conditions and compared to the same measurements with a plain sensor. The magnitudes of the measured data and the data from the semi-empirical equation are higher for the heat transfer coefficients than thenumerical data considered on the velocity range. Friction and heat transfer coefficients are presented in a large velocity range in the report. The goals are reached acceptably using numerical and experimental research. The next challenge is to achieve results for grooved stator-rotor combinations. The work contains also results for an air gap with a grooved stator with 36 slots. The velocity field by the numerical method does not match in every respect the estimated flow mode. The absence of secondary Taylor vortices is evident when using time averagednumerical simulation.

Diplomityössä tutkitaan kaupallisen simulointiohjelmiston soveltuvuutta nykyaikaisen kiinnirullaimen dynamiikan tutkimiseen. Kiinnostuksen kohteena on erityisesti kahden telan välinen nippi, sekä siinä tapahtuvat värähtelyt. Työssä mallinnetaan rullaussylinterin ja telapainolaitteen simulointimallit. Rullaussylinterin simulointimalli yhdistetään Lappeenrannan teknillisessä korkeakoulussa mallinnettuun tampuuritelan simulointimalliin, jolloin nippikontaktin tutkiminen on mahdollista. Simuloituja tuloksia verrataan todellisella laitteella tehtyihin mittauksiin sekä elementtimenetelmällä laskettuihin tuloksiin. Diplomityön mekaniikka mallinnetaan ADAMS-ohjelmistossa monikappaledynamiikan keinoin. Toimilaitteiden sekä säätöjärjestelmien kuvaukseen käytetään MATLAB Simulink-ohjelmistoa. Telojen joustavuuden mallinnuksessa käytetään hyväksi keskittyneiden massojen periaatetta. Järjestelmän hydraulipiirit mallinnetaan keskittyneiden paineiden teorian mukaisesti ja toimilaitteiden mallinnuksessa käytetään puoliempiiristä mallinnustekniikkaa. Työssä havaitaan monikappaledynamiikan soveltuvan kiinnirullaimen dynamiikan tutkimiseen. Kahden diplomityön tuloksena laaditun nippimallin avulla voidaan kuvata rullaustapahtumassa vaikuttavat voimat oikein. Värähtelymittausten perusteella voidaan tehdä karkeita johtopäätöksiä, mallin toimivuuden arvioimiseksi värähtelyjen kuvaamisessa, joskin mallin havaitaan vaativan lisätutkimusta ja kehitystyötä.

Diplomityössä tutkittiin hydrauliikan reaaliaikasimulointia ja sen mahdollisuuksia tuotekehityksen apuvälineenä. Työssä käytettiin dSPACE:n reaaliaikasimulointiin valmistamia laitteita ja ohjelmia. Työssä luotiin Matlab/Simulink –ympäristöön tyypillisimmistä hydrauliikkakomponenttien puoliempiirisistä malleista koostuva komponenttikirjasto, joista kootut hydrauliikkapiirien mallit voitiin kääntää reaaliaikaympäristöön. Työn tavoitteena oli kehittää menetelmä, jonka avulla voidaan nopeuttaa ja helpottaa hydraulismekaanisten konejärjestelmien suunnittelua ja tuotekehitystä. Kehitetyt menetelmät perustuvat todellisen konejärjestelmän osaksi kytketyn reaaliaikaisen virtuaalihydrauliikan avulla laskettuun uuteen ohjaussignaaliin, jonka avulla voidaan todellisella hydrauliikalla kuvata virtuaalisen hydrauliikan vaikutukset todelliseen järjestelmään. Näin ollen muutokset voidaan siis tehdä virtuaaliseen hydrauliikkaan ja niiden vaikutukset nähdä todellisen järjestelmän käyttäytymisessä.

Työn tavoitteena oli kasvattaa sahan dimensiolaitoksella käytettävän trimmerin rakenteellista kapasiteettia. Tavoitteeseen pyrittiin modernisoimalla trimmerin teräyksikköä käyttävää toimilaite ja teräyksikön säätö dynamiikan mallinnuksen avulla. Trimmerin teräyksikön dynamiikka mallinnettiin MATLAB-matematiikkaohjelmistolla kaksiulotteisena kinematiikkamallina ja kolmeulotteisena kinetiikkamallina. Dynamiikkamallien tulosten perusteella valittin teräyksikköä käyttävä toimilaite komponentteineen. Kinetiikkamalliin mallinnettiin trimmeriä käyttävä hydraulipiiri valittuine komponentteineen keskittyneiden paineiden ja puoliempiirisen mallinnuksen periaatteita käyttäen. Teräyksikön työkiertoa säätämään mallinnettiin suljettu takaisinkytketty säätöpiiri. Tuloksien perusteella valittiin optimaalinen toimilaitteen asemointigeometria ja todettiin mallinnetun järjestelmän täyttävän asetetut vaatimukset. Järjestelmää testattiin muuttamalla jarjestelman parametreja ja tutkimalla muutosten vaikutuksia jarjestelman toimintaan. Lisaksi tutkittiin lyhyesti terayksikon rakenteen keventamisen vaikutuksia.

Työn tavoite oli kehittää karakterisointimenetelmät kalkkikiven ja polttoaineen tuhkan jauhautumisen ennustamiselle kiertoleijukattilan tulipesässä. Kiintoainekäyttäytymisen karakterisoinnilla ja mallintamisella voidaan tarkentaa tulipesän lämmönsiirron ja tuhkajaon ennustamista. Osittain kokeelliset karakterisointimenetelmät perustuvat kalkkikiven jauhautumiseen laboratoriokokoluokan leijutetussa kvartsiputkireaktorissa ja tuhkan jauhatumiseen rotaatiomyllyssä. Karakterisointimenetelmät ottavat huomioon eri-laiset toimintaolosuhteet kaupallisen kokoluokan kiertoleijukattiloissa. Menetelmät kelpoistettiin kaupallisen kokoluokan kiertoleijukattiloista mitattujen ja fraktioittaisella kiintoainemallilla mallinnettujen taseiden avulla. Kelpoistamistaseiden vähäisyydestä huolimatta karakterisointimenetelmät arvioitiin virhetarkastelujen perusteella järkeviksi. Karakterisointimenetelmien kehittämistä ja tarkentamista tullaan jatkamaan.

Rosin is a natural product from pine forests and it is used as a raw material in resinate syntheses. Resinates are polyvalent metal salts of rosin acids and especially Ca- and Ca/Mg- resinates find wide application in the printing ink industry. In this thesis, analytical methods were applied to increase general knowledge of resinate chemistry and the reaction kinetics was studied in order to model the non linear solution viscosity increase during resinate syntheses by the fusion method. Solution viscosity in toluene is an important quality factor for resinates to be used in printing inks. The concept of critical resinate concentration, c crit, was introduced to define an abrupt change in viscosity dependence on resinate concentration in the solution. The concept was then used to explain the non-inear solution viscosity increase during resinate syntheses. A semi empirical model with two estimated parameters was derived for the viscosity increase on the basis of apparent reaction kinetics. The model was used to control the viscosity and to predict the total reaction time of the resinate process. The kinetic data from the complex reaction media was obtained by acid value titration and by FTIR spectroscopic analyses using a conventional calibration method to measure the resinate concentration and the concentration of free rosin acids. A multivariate calibration method was successfully applied to make partial least square (PLS) models for monitoring acid value and solution viscosity in both mid-infrared (MIR) and near infrared (NIR) regions during the syntheses. The calibration models can be used for on line resinate process monitoring. In kinetic studies, two main reaction steps were observed during the syntheses. First a fast irreversible resination reaction occurs at 235 °C and then a slow thermal decarboxylation of rosin acids starts to take place at 265 °C. Rosin oil is formed during the decarboxylation reaction step causing significant mass loss as the rosin oil evaporates from the system while the viscosity increases to the target level. The mass balance of the syntheses was determined based on the resinate concentration increase during the decarboxylation reaction step. A mechanistic study of the decarboxylation reaction was based on the observation that resinate molecules are partly solvated by rosin acids during the syntheses. Different decarboxylation mechanisms were proposed for the free and solvating rosin acids. The deduced kinetic model supported the analytical data of the syntheses in a wide resinate concentration region, over a wide range of viscosity values and at different reaction temperatures. In addition, the application of the kinetic model to the modified resinate syntheses gave a good fit. A novel synthesis method with the addition of decarboxylated rosin (i.e. rosin oil) to the reaction mixture was introduced. The conversion of rosin acid to resinate was increased to the level necessary to obtain the target viscosity for the product at 235 °C. Due to a lower reaction temperature than in traditional fusion synthesis at 265 °C, thermal decarboxylation is avoided. As a consequence, the mass yield of the resinate syntheses can be increased from ca. 70% to almost 100% by recycling the added rosin oil.

Tässä diplomityössä optimoitiin nelivaiheinen 1 MWe höyryturbiinin prototyyppimalli evoluutioalgoritmien avulla sekä tutkittiin optimoinnista saatuja kustannushyötyjä. Optimoinnissa käytettiin DE – algoritmia. Optimointi saatiin toimimaan, mutta optimoinnissa käytetyn laskentasovelluksen (semiempiirisiin yhtälöihin perustuvat mallit) luonteesta johtuen optimoinnin tarkkuus CFD – laskennalla suoritettuun tarkastusmallinnukseen verrattuna oli jonkin verran toivottua pienempi. Tulosten em. epätarkkuus olisi tuskin ollut vältettävissä, sillä ongelma johtui puoliempiirisiin laskentamalleihin liittyvistä lähtöoletusongelmista sekä epävarmuudesta sovitteiden absoluuttisista pätevyysalueista. Optimoinnin onnistumisen kannalta tällainen algebrallinen mallinnus oli kuitenkin välttämätöntä, koska esim. CFD-laskentaa ei olisi mitenkään voitu tehdä jokaisella optimointiaskeleella. Optimoinnin aikana ongelmia esiintyi silti konetehojen riittävyydessä sekä sellaisen sopivan rankaisumallin löytämisessä, joka pitäisi algoritmin matemaattisesti sallitulla alueella, muttei rajoittaisi liikaa optimoinnin edistymistä. Loput ongelmat johtuivat sovelluksen uutuudesta sekä täsmällisyysongelmista sovitteiden pätevyysalueiden käsittelyssä. Vaikka optimoinnista saatujen tulosten tarkkuus ei ollut aivan tavoitteen mukainen, oli niillä kuitenkin koneensuunnittelua edullisesti ohjaava vaikutus. DE – algoritmin avulla suoritetulla optimoinnilla saatiin turbiinista noin 2,2 % enemmän tehoja, joka tarkoittaa noin 15 000 € konekohtaista kustannushyötyä. Tämä on yritykselle erittäin merkittävä konekohtainen kustannushyöty. Loppujen lopuksi voitaneen sanoa, etteivät evoluutioalgoritmit olleet parhaimmillaan prototyyppituotteen optimoinnissa. Evoluutioalgoritmeilla teknisten laitteiden optimoinnissa piilee valtavasti mahdollisuuksia, mutta se vaatii kypsän sovelluskohteen, joka tunnetaan jo entuudestaan erinomaisesti tai on yksinkertainen ja aukottomasti laskettavissa.

The objective of this dissertation is to improve the dynamic simulation of fluid power circuits. A fluid power circuit is a typical way to implement power transmission in mobile working machines, e.g. cranes, excavators etc. Dynamic simulation is an essential tool in developing controllability and energy-efficient solutions for mobile machines. Efficient dynamic simulation is the basic requirement for the real-time simulation. In the real-time simulation of fluid power circuits there exist numerical problems due to the software and methods used for modelling and integration. A simulation model of a fluid power circuit is typically created using differential and algebraic equations. Efficient numerical methods are required since differential equations must be solved in real time. Unfortunately, simulation software packages offer only a limited selection of numerical solvers. Numerical problems cause noise to the results, which in many cases leads the simulation run to fail. Mathematically the fluid power circuit models are stiff systems of ordinary differential equations. Numerical solution of the stiff systems can be improved by two alternative approaches. The first is to develop numerical solvers suitable for solving stiff systems. The second is to decrease the model stiffness itself by introducing models and algorithms that either decrease the highest eigenvalues or neglect them by introducing steady-state solutions of the stiff parts of the models. The thesis proposes novel methods using the latter approach. The study aims to develop practical methods usable in dynamic simulation of fluid power circuits using explicit fixed-step integration algorithms. In this thesis, twomechanisms whichmake the systemstiff are studied. These are the pressure drop approaching zero in the turbulent orifice model and the volume approaching zero in the equation of pressure build-up. These are the critical areas to which alternative methods for modelling and numerical simulation are proposed. Generally, in hydraulic power transmission systems the orifice flow is clearly in the turbulent area. The flow becomes laminar as the pressure drop over the orifice approaches zero only in rare situations. These are e.g. when a valve is closed, or an actuator is driven against an end stopper, or external force makes actuator to switch its direction during operation. This means that in terms of accuracy, the description of laminar flow is not necessary. But, unfortunately, when a purely turbulent description of the orifice is used, numerical problems occur when the pressure drop comes close to zero since the first derivative of flow with respect to the pressure drop approaches infinity when the pressure drop approaches zero. Furthermore, the second derivative becomes discontinuous, which causes numerical noise and an infinitely small integration step when a variable step integrator is used. A numerically efficient model for the orifice flow is proposed using a cubic spline function to describe the flow in the laminar and transition areas. Parameters for the cubic spline function are selected such that its first derivative is equal to the first derivative of the pure turbulent orifice flow model in the boundary condition. In the dynamic simulation of fluid power circuits, a tradeoff exists between accuracy and calculation speed. This investigation is made for the two-regime flow orifice model. Especially inside of many types of valves, as well as between them, there exist very small volumes. The integration of pressures in small fluid volumes causes numerical problems in fluid power circuit simulation. Particularly in realtime simulation, these numerical problems are a great weakness. The system stiffness approaches infinity as the fluid volume approaches zero. If fixed step explicit algorithms for solving ordinary differential equations (ODE) are used, the system stability would easily be lost when integrating pressures in small volumes. To solve the problem caused by small fluid volumes, a pseudo-dynamic solver is proposed. Instead of integration of the pressure in a small volume, the pressure is solved as a steady-state pressure created in a separate cascade loop by numerical integration. The hydraulic capacitance V/Be of the parts of the circuit whose pressures are solved by the pseudo-dynamic method should be orders of magnitude smaller than that of those partswhose pressures are integrated. The key advantage of this novel method is that the numerical problems caused by the small volumes are completely avoided. Also, the method is freely applicable regardless of the integration routine applied. The superiority of both above-mentioned methods is that they are suited for use together with the semi-empirical modelling method which necessarily does not require any geometrical data of the valves and actuators to be modelled. In this modelling method, most of the needed component information can be taken from the manufacturer’s nominal graphs. This thesis introduces the methods and shows several numerical examples to demonstrate how the proposed methods improve the dynamic simulation of various hydraulic circuits.

This thesis presents a three-dimensional, semi-empirical, steady state model for simulating the combustion, gasification, and formation of emissions in circulating fluidized bed (CFB) processes. In a large-scale CFB furnace, the local feeding of fuel, air, and other input materials, as well as the limited mixing rate of different reactants produce inhomogeneous process conditions. To simulate the real conditions, the furnace should be modelled three-dimensionally or the three-dimensional effects should be taken into account. The only available methods for simulating the large CFB furnaces three-dimensionally are semi-empirical models, which apply a relatively coarse calculation mesh and a combination of fundamental conservation equations, theoretical models and empirical correlations. The number of such models is extremely small. The main objective of this work was to achieve a model which can be applied to calculating industrial scale CFB boilers and which can simulate all the essential sub-phenomena: fluid dynamics, reactions, the attrition of particles, and heat transfer. The core of the work was to develop the model frame and the required sub-models for determining the combustion and sorbent reactions. The objective was reached, and the developed model was successfully used for studying various industrial scale CFB boilers combusting different types of fuel. The model for sorbent reactions, which includes the main reactions for calcitic limestones, was applied for studying the new possible phenomena occurring in the oxygen-fired combustion. The presented combustion and sorbent models and principles can be utilized in other model approaches as well, including other empirical and semi-empirical model approaches, and CFD based simulations. The main achievement is the overall model frame which can be utilized for the further development and testing of new sub-models and theories, and for concentrating the knowledge gathered from the experimental work carried out at bench scale, pilot scale and industrial scale apparatus, and from the computational work performed by other modelling methods.

Virtuaalimallinnuksella tarkoitetaan koneen simulointia, jossa huomioidaan koneen mekaniikka, toimilaitteet ja ohjausjärjestelmä. Työn tavoitteena oli luoda virtuaalimalli harvesteripäästä. Kyseinen virtuaalimalli sisälsi harvesteripään tärkeimmät mekaaniset osat, pituusmittalaitteen hydrauliikkapiirin ja tämän ohjauksen. Luodussa virtuaalimallissa huomioitiin myös harvesteripään ja puun väliset kontaktit. Lisäksi työssä tutkittiin mahdollista virtuaalimallinnuksen implementoimista osaksi yrityksen tuotekehitysprosessia. Työssä suoritettiin verifiointimittaukset pituusmittalaitteen hydrauliikkapiirille sekä virtuaalimallin hydrauliikkakomponentit parametrisoitiin. Mittauksista saatuja tuloksia verrattiin virtuaalimallista saatuihin tuloksiin. Työssä esitellään myös ehdotus kuinka virtuaalimallinnusta kannattaisi hyödyntää osana yrityksen tuotekehitysprosessia. Virtuaalimallin eri osa-alueilla saavutetut tulokset osoittavat, että virtuaalimallinuksen hyödyntäminen tuotekehitysprosessin aikana mahdollistaa harvesteripään toimintojen tarkastelun ennen prototyypin rakentamista ja testaamista. Lisäksi hydrauliikkapiirin parametrisoimisella pystytään tutkimaan parametrien vaikutusta kokonaisuuteen.

This thesis presents a one-dimensional, semi-empirical dynamic model for the simulation and analysis of a calcium looping process for post-combustion CO2 capture. Reduction of greenhouse emissions from fossil fuel power production requires rapid actions including the development of efficient carbon capture and sequestration technologies. The development of new carbon capture technologies can be expedited by using modelling tools. Techno-economical evaluation of new capture processes can be done quickly and cost-effectively with computational models before building expensive pilot plants. Post-combustion calcium looping is a developing carbon capture process which utilizes fluidized bed technology with lime as a sorbent. The main objective of this work was to analyse the technological feasibility of the calcium looping process at different scales with a computational model. A one-dimensional dynamic model was applied to the calcium looping process, simulating the behaviour of the interconnected circulating fluidized bed reactors. The model incorporates fundamental mass and energy balance solvers to semi-empirical models describing solid behaviour in a circulating fluidized bed and chemical reactions occurring in the calcium loop. In addition, fluidized bed combustion, heat transfer and core-wall layer effects were modelled. The calcium looping model framework was successfully applied to a 30 kWth laboratory scale and a pilot scale unit 1.7 MWth and used to design a conceptual 250 MWth industrial scale unit. Valuable information was gathered from the behaviour of a small scale laboratory device. In addition, the interconnected behaviour of pilot plant reactors and the effect of solid fluidization on the thermal and carbon dioxide balances of the system were analysed. The scale-up study provided practical information on the thermal design of an industrial sized unit, selection of particle size and operability in different load scenarios.

Effective control and limiting of carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions in energy production are major challenges of science today. Current research activities include the development of new low-cost carbon capture technologies, and among the proposed concepts, chemical combustion (CLC) and chemical looping with oxygen uncoupling (CLOU) have attracted significant attention allowing intrinsic separation of pure CO₂ from a hydrocarbon fuel combustion process with a comparatively small energy penalty. Both CLC and CLOU utilize the well-established fluidized bed technology, but several technical challenges need to be overcome in order to commercialize the processes. Therefore, development of proper modelling and simulation tools is essential for the design, optimization, and scale-up of chemical looping-based combustion systems. The main objective of this work was to analyze the technological feasibility of CLC and CLOU processes at different scales using a computational modelling approach. A onedimensional fluidized bed model frame was constructed and applied for simulations of CLC and CLOU systems consisting of interconnected fluidized bed reactors. The model is based on the conservation of mass and energy, and semi-empirical correlations are used to describe the hydrodynamics, chemical reactions, and transfer of heat in the reactors. Another objective was to evaluate the viability of chemical looping-based energy production, and a flow sheet model representing a CLC-integrated steam power plant was developed. The 1D model frame was succesfully validated based on the operation of a 150 kWth laboratory-sized CLC unit fed by methane. By following certain scale-up criteria, a conceptual design for a CLC reactor system at a pre-commercial scale of 100 MWth was created, after which the validated model was used to predict the performance of the system. As a result, further understanding of the parameters affecting the operation of a large-scale CLC process was acquired, which will be useful for the practical design work in the future. The integration of the reactor system and steam turbine cycle for power production was studied resulting in a suggested plant layout including a CLC boiler system, a simple heat recovery setup, and an integrated steam cycle with a three pressure level steam turbine. Possible operational regions of a CLOU reactor system fed by bituminous coal were determined via mass, energy, and exergy balance analysis. Finally, the 1D fluidized bed model was modified suitable for CLOU, and the performance of a hypothetical 500 MWth CLOU fuel reactor was evaluated by extensive case simulations.

It is common knowledge of the world’s dependency on fossil fuel for energy, its unsustainability on the long run and the changing trend towards renewable energy as an alternative energy source. This aims to cut down greenhouse gas emission and its impact on the rate of ecological and climatic change. Quite remarkably, wind energy has been one of many focus areas of renewable energy sources and has attracted lots of investment and technological advancement. The objective of this research is to explore wind energy and its application in household heating. This research aims at applying experimental approach in real time to study and verify a virtually simulated wind powered hydraulic house heating system. The hardware components comprise of an integrated hydraulic pump, flow control valve, hydraulic fluid and other hydraulic components. The system design and control applies hardware in-the-loop (HIL) simulation setup. Output signal from the semi-empirical turbine modelling controls the integrated motor to generate flow. Throttling the volume flow creates pressure drop across the valve and subsequently thermal power in the system to be outputted using a heat exchanger. Maximum thermal power is achieved by regulating valve orifice to achieve optimum system parameter. Savonius rotor is preferred for its low inertia, high starting torque and ease of design and maintenance characteristics, but lags in power efficiency. A prototype turbine design is used; with power output in range of practical Savonius turbine. The physical mechanism of the prototype turbine’s augmentation design is not known and will not be a focus in this study.

The main aim of this research was to develop cost of poor quality calculation model which will better reflect business impacts of lost productivity caused by IT incidents for the case company. This objective was pursued by reviewing literature and conducting a study in a Finnish multinational manufacturing company. Broad analysis of the scientific literature allowed to identify main theories and models of Cost of Poor Quality and provided better base for development of measurements of business impacts of lost productivity. Empirical data was gathered with semi-structured interviews and internet based survey. In total, twelve interviews with experts and 39 survey results from business stakeholders were gathered. Main results of empirical study helped to develop the measurement model of cost of poor quality and it was tied to incident priority matrix. Nevertheless, the model was created based on available data. Main conclusions of the thesis were that cost of poor quality measurements could be even further improved if additional data points could be used. New model takes into consideration different cost regions and utilizes on this notion.

Tutkimuksen tavoitteena oli tutkia yrityksen rajoja laajennetun transaktiokustannusteorian näkökulmasta. Tutkimus oli empiirinen tutkimus, jossa tutkittiin viittä toimialaa. Tutkimuksen tavoitteena oli verrata paperiteollisuutta teräs-, kemian-, ICT- ja energiateollisuuteen. Aineisto empiiriseen osioon kerättiin puolistrukturoiduilla teemahaastatteluilla. Tutkimus osoitti, että laajennettu transaktiokustannusteoria soveltuu hyvinyrityksen rajojen määrittelyyn. Staattinen transaktiokustannusteorian selitysaste ei ole riittävä, joten dynaaminen laajennus on tarpeellinen. Tutkimuksessa ilmeni, että paperiteollisuudella verrattuna muihin toimialoihin on suurimmat haasteet tehokkaiden rajojen määrittämisessä.
