The subject of this master’s thesis was developing a context-based reminder service for mobile devices. Possible sources of context were identified and analyzed. One such source is geographical location obtained via a GPS receiver. These receivers consume a lot of power and techniques and algorithms for reducing power consumptions were proposed and analyzed. The service was implemented as an application on a series 60 mobile phone. The application requirements, user interface and architecture are presented. The end-user experiences are discussed and possible future development and research areas are presented.

Life on earth is based on sunlight, which is captured in chemical form by photosynthetic reactions. In the chloroplasts of plants, light reactions of photosynthesis take place at thylakoid membranes, whereas carbon assimilation reactions occur in the soluble stroma. The products of linear electron transfer (LET), highly-energetic ATP molecules, and reducing power in the form of NADPH molecules, are further used in the fixation of inorganic CO2 molecules into organic sugars. Ferredoxin-NADP+ oxidoreductase (FNR) catalyzes the last of the light reactions by transferring electrons from ferredoxin (FD) to NADP+. In addition to LET, FNR has been suggested to play a role in cyclic electron transfer (CET), which produces ATP without the accumulation of reducing equivalents. CET is proposed to occur via two putative routes, the PGR5- route and the NDH-route. In this thesis, the leaf-type FNR (LFNR) isoforms LFNR1 and LFNR2 of a model organism, Arabidopsis thaliana, were characterized. The physiological roles of LFNRs were investigated using single and double mutant plants. The viability of the single mutants indicates functionality of both isoforms, with neither appearing to play a specific role in CET. The more severe phenotype of low-temperature adapted fnr2 plants compared to both wild-type (WT) and fnr1 plants suggests a specific role for LFNR2 under unfavorable growth conditions. The more severe phenotype of the fnr1 x fnr2 (F1 generation) plants compared to single mutants reflects down-regulated photosynthetic capacity, whereas slightly higher excitation pressure indicates mild over-excitation of electron transfer chain (ETC). However, induction of CET and various photoprotective mechanisms enable adaptation of fnr1 x fnr2 plants to scarcity of LFNR. The fnr1 fnr2 plants (F2 generation), without detectable levels of LFNR, were viable only under heterotrophic conditions. Moreover, drought stress induced acceleration of the rate of P700 + re-reduction in darkness was accompanied by a concomitant up-regulation of the PGR5-route specific components, PGR5 and PGRL1, demonstrating the induction of CET via the PGR5-route. The up-regulation of relative transcriptional expression of the FD1 gene indicates that the FD1 isoform may have a specific function in CET, while no such role could be defined for either of the LFNR isoforms. Both the membrane-bound and soluble LFNR1 and LFNR2 each appear as two distinct spots after 2D-PAGE with different isoelectric points (pIs), indicating the existence of post-translational modifications (PTMs) which do not determine the membrane attachment of LFNR. The possibility of phosphorylation and glycosylation PTMs were excluded, but all four LFNR forms were shown to contain acetylated lysine residues as well as alternative N-termini. N-terminal acetylation was shown to shift the pI of both LFNRs to be more acidic. In addition, all four LFNR forms were demonstrated to interact both with FD1 and FD2 in vitro

The aim of this thesis is to find and analyze different methods which reduce fluid bed boilers’ auxiliary power consumption. The objective is to examine the effects and feasibility of these methods. The literature part explains how fluid bed boilers work and what are the main sources of auxiliary power consumption. Designs and operation of these equipment are presented. The literature part also discusses the basics of auxiliary power consumption reduction and introduces four low pressure drop constructions. The experimental part inspects six different methods. Effects of these methods on the auxiliary power consumption are calculated and their impacts on the operation of the boiler are modeled. Calculations show that reasonable changes can reduce fluid bed boiler’s auxiliary power consumption by 2,1-10,2 %. Biggest reductions come from lower air coefficients, smaller bed a-level pressures and lower primary/secondary air –ratios. Models showed no problems with the smaller bed a-level pressures. With the lower air coefficients and smaller primary/secondary air –ratios the models showed a significant increase in the carbon monoxide levels.

Control applications of switched mode power supplies have been widely investigated. The main objective ofresearch and development (R&D) in this field is always to find the most suitable control method to be implemented in various DC/DC converter topologies. Inother words, the goal is to select a control method capable of improving the efficiency of the converter, reducing the effect of disturbances (line and load variation), lessening the effect of EMI (electro magnetic interference), and beingless effected by component variation. The main objective of this research work is to study different control methods implemented in switched mode power supplies namely (PID control, hysteresis control, adaptive control, current programmed control, variable structure control (VSC), and sliding mode control (SMC). The advantages and drawbacks of each control method are given. Two control methods, the PID and the SMC are selected and their effects on DC/DC (Buck, Boost, and Buck-Boost) converters are examined. Matlab/SimulinkTM is used to implement PID control method in DC/DC Buck converter and SMC in DC/DC (Buck, and Buck Boost) converters. For the prototype, operational amplifiers (op-amps) are used to implement PID control in DC/DC Buck converter. For SMC op-amps are implemented in DC/DC Buck converter and dSPACETM is used to control the DC/DC Buck-Boost converter. The SMC can be applied to the DC/DC (Buck, Boost, and Buck-Boost) converters. A comparison of the effects of the PID control and the SMC on the DC/DC Buck converter response in steady state, under line variations, load variations, and different component variations is performed. Also the Conducted RF-Emissions between the PID and SMC DC/DC Buck Converter are compared. The thesis shows that, in comparison with the PID control, the SMC provides better steady-state response, better dynamic response, less EMI, inherent order reduction, robustness against system uncertainty disturbances, and an implicit stability proof. Giving a better steady-state and dynamic response, the SMC is implemented in a DC/DC resonant converter. The half-wave zero current switching (HWZCS) DC/DC Buck converter is selected as a converter topology. A general guideline to select the tank component values, needed for the designing of a HWZCS DC/DC Buck, is obtained. The implementation of the SMC to a HWZCS DC/DC Buck converter is analysed. The converter response is investigated in the steady-state region and in the dynamic region.

Tämän työn tarkoituksena oli löytää keinoja erään leijukerroskattilan typenoksidipäästöjen vähentämiseksi. Koska päästöt olivat jo alunperin alhaiset leijukerrostekniikan ja hybridin SNCR/SCR –typenpoistolaitteiston ansiosta, päätettiin päästöjä lähteä vähentämään parantamalla ammoniakkiruiskutuksen säätöä. Alkuperäinen ammoniakkiruiskutuksen säätö oli liian hidas, jotta satunnaisten häiriöiden aiheuttamat typenoksidipiikit olisi pystytty poistamaan. Ammoniakkiruiskutusta parannettiin lisäämällä jokaiseen ammoniakkilinjaan mäntäpumput, joiden avulla ammoniakkia voidaan syöttää sinne, missä sitä eniten tarvitaan. Ammoniakkiruiskutuksen säätöön kehitettiin uusi sumeaan logiikkaan perustuva säätäjä. Myös muita kehittyneitä säätömenetelmiä kuten neuroverkkoa hyödynnettiin säätäjän kehityksessä. Ammoniakkiruiskutuksen säätäjää testattiin menestyksekkäästi Ruotsissa Brista Kraftin Märstassa sijaitsevalla voimalaitoksella

Green IT is a term that covers various tasks and concepts that are related to reducing the environmental impact of IT. At enterprise level, Green IT has significant potential to generate sustainable cost savings: the total amount of devices is growing and electricity prices are rising. The lifecycle of a computer can be made more environmentally sustainable using Green IT, e.g. by using energy efficient components and by implementing device power management. The challenge using power management at enterprise level is how to measure and follow-up the impact of power management policies? During the thesis a power management feature was developed to a configuration management system. The feature can be used to automatically power down and power on PCs using a pre-defined schedule and to estimate the total power usage of devices. Measurements indicate that using the feature the device power consumption can be monitored quite precisely and the power consumption can be reduced, which generates electricity cost savings and reduces the environmental impact of IT.

Line converters have become an attractive AC/DC power conversion solution in industrial applications. Line converters are based on controllable semiconductor switches, typically insulated gate bipolar transistors. Compared to the traditional diode bridge-based power converters line converters have many advantageous characteristics, including bidirectional power flow, controllable de-link voltage and power factor and sinusoidal line current. This thesis considers the control of the lineconverter and its application to power quality improving. The line converter control system studied is based on the virtual flux linkage orientation and the direct torque control (DTC) principle. A new DTC-based current control scheme is introduced and analyzed. The overmodulation characteristics of the DTC converter are considered and an analytical equation for the maximum modulation index is derived. The integration of the active filtering features to the line converter isconsidered. Three different active filtering methods are implemented. A frequency-domain method, which is based on selective harmonic sequence elimination, anda time-domain method, which is effective in a wider frequency band, are used inharmonic current compensation. Also, a voltage feedback active filtering method, which mitigates harmonic sequences of the grid voltage, is implemented. The frequency-domain and the voltage feedback active filtering control systems are analyzed and controllers are designed. The designs are verified with practical measurements. The performance and the characteristics of the implemented active filtering methods are compared and the effect of the L- and the LCL-type line filteris discussed. The importance of the correct grid impedance estimate in the voltage feedback active filter control system is discussed and a new measurement-based method to obtain it is proposed. Also, a power conditioning system (PCS) application of the line converter is considered. A new method for correcting the voltage unbalance of the PCS-fed island network is proposed and experimentally validated.

Venäjällä uudistetaan sähkömarkkinoita. Uudistamisella pyritään vapauttamaan sähkömarkkinat ja lisäämään kilpailua energiasektorilla. Sähkömarkkinoiden vapauttamisen tarkoitus on energiasektorin hyötysuhteen nostaminen ja investointien houkutteleminen sektorille. Venäjä on ratifioinut Kioton protokollan, mikä energiasektorin kannalta on tärkeää, koska protokollan yhteistoteutusmekanismin kautta saadaan houkuteltua investointeja sektorille.
