The objective of this thesis is to study wavelets and their role in turbulence applications. Under scrutiny in the thesis is the intermittency in turbulence models. Wavelets are used as a mathematical tool to study the intermittent activities that turbulence models produce. The first section generally introduces wavelets and wavelet transforms as a mathematical tool. Moreover, the basic properties of turbulence are discussed and classical methods for modeling turbulent flows are explained. Wavelets are implemented to model the turbulence as well as to analyze turbulent signals. The model studied here is the GOY (Gledzer 1973, Ohkitani & Yamada 1989) shell model of turbulence, which is a popular model for explaining intermittency based on the cascade of kinetic energy. The goal is to introduce better quantification method for intermittency obtained in a shell model. Wavelets are localized in both space (time) and scale, therefore, they are suitable candidates for the study of singular bursts, that interrupt the calm periods of an energy flow through various scales. The study concerns two questions, namely the frequency of the occurrence as well as the intensity of the singular bursts at various Reynolds numbers. The results gave an insight that singularities become more local as Reynolds number increases. The singularities become more local also when the shell number is increased at certain Reynolds number. The study revealed that the singular bursts are more frequent at Re ~ 107 than other cases with lower Re. The intermittency of bursts for the cases with Re ~ 106 and Re ~ 105 was similar, but for the case with Re ~ 104 bursts occured after long waiting time in a different fashion so that it could not be scaled with higher Re.

Tutkimuksessa luodaan Tuko Logistics Oy:n työntömastotrukkien toimintaa opti-moivia toimintaehdotuksia varastonohjausjärjestelmästä saatavan työntömastotruk-kidatan pohjalta. Tutkimus on toteutettu haastattelututkimuksena ja käyttäen apuna tieteellisiä julkaisuja. Tehtävien lomittamistutkimuksen ja loogiseen päättelyn tulok-sena on luotu kaksi toimintaehdotusta: A ja B. Toimintaehdotusten vaikutuksia van-haan järjestelmään verrataan mittareilla, joista osa on tehty jonoteorian jonomallien laskukaavojen pohjalta. Mittareita ovat: tehdyt tehtävät tunnissa, tuottamattoman ajon suhde tuottavaan, normaalitehtäväjonon pituus ja normaalitehtäväjonon koko-naisodotusaika. Toimintaehdotus B osoittautuu tehokkaammaksi ehdotukseksi, mutta Toimintaehdotus A:lla voi varmistaa tehtävien riittämisen työntömastotrukeille. Tut-kimuksessa ehdotetaan myös muita työntömastotrukkien toimintaa optimoivia muu-toksia, jotka voidaan ottaa käyttöön jokaisessa toimintamallissa.

Diplomityö käsittelee Helsingin sosiaali- ja terveysviraston palvelusetelitoimintaa eräänä ostopalvelun järjestämistapana. Vakinaistettuja palveluseteleitä on kaksi-toista, joista työhön on valittu viisi kustannuksiltaan ja lukumääriltään suurinta palveluseteliä. Tutkimuksessa mallinnetaan kahden keskenään erilaisimman palve-lusetelin prosessikuvaukset, vanhusten palveluasumisen (sosh) ja suun terveyden-huollon (tervh) palveluseteleille ja kuvataan niiden hallinnolliset työvaiheet ja toi-minnot. Empiirinen aineisto koostuu aiemmin kerätystä hallinnollisen työajan da-tasta, jonka avulla eri toimintoihin sitoutuneiden hallinnollisten kustannuksien las-kenta on suoritettu hyödyntäen aikaperusteista toimintolaskentaa. Aikaperusteisen toimintolaskennan avulla saadaan esille kirjanpidon ulkopuolelle jääviä piileviä prosessikustannuksia. Lisäksi diplomityössä tehdään edullisuusvertailua oman vas-taavan palvelutoiminnan ja palvelusetelien välillä. Terveydenhuollon palvelusetelien hallinnolliset prosessit osoittautuvat hallinnolli-sesti ja kustannuksien osalta kuormittavammaksi kuin sosiaalihuollon vastaavat prosessit. Terveydenhuollon palveluseteliprosessit ovat luonteeltaan monivaihei-sempia, ne ovat toimenpiteellisiä ja kertaluonteisia, joka lisää asiakasvolyymia ja tiedon välittämisen tarvetta sosiaali- ja terveysviraston ja palveluntuottajan välillä. Hallinnollinen kustannuslisä on vuoden 2013 palvelusetelitoiminnan volyymeillä suun terveydenhuollossa +24%, kolonoskopiassa +9%, ikäihmisten päivätoimin-nassa +8%, vammaisten henkilökohtaisessa avussa +5% ja vanhusten palveluasu-misessa +1%. Hallinnollisten kustannusten esiin tuomiseksi tulee terveydenhuollon palvelusetelien kirjanpidon kustannuksissa käyttää kerrointa 1,167 ja sosiaalihuol-lon palvelusetelien kustannuksissa kerrointa 1,046. Edullisuusvertailussa suun terveydenhuollon ja kolonoskopian palvelusetelit osoittautuvat omaa toimintaa kalliimmiksi, vanhusten palveluasuminen, ikäihmisten päivätoiminta ja vammais-ten henkilökohtainen apu on edullisempaa tuottaa palvelusetelillä. Palveluseteli-toiminnan kustannushyöty ei ole ainoa tekijä toimintaa suunnitelleessa. Hoitota-kuuseen vastaaminen, asiakasorientaation ja vapaavalintaisuuden lisääntyminen, sekä palvelun sujuvuus vaikuttavat myös palvelusetelitoiminnan kehittämisessä.

The purpose of the thesis is to generate scenarios of future purposes and of use of ships, suitable for STX Finland Cruise Oy to design and build, over a 50 year time span by applying the Delphi method and an open innovation approach in a future workshop. The scenarios were mapped out with help of two Delphi survey rounds and one future workshop. The number of participants in both surveys and the workshop was some twenty experts in each, representing various fields. On the basis of the first survey round, four different subject areas were selected for analysis: purposes for the use of ships; energy efficiency of cruises and ships; cost efficiency of sea transportation and vacation; and the views and expectations of the customers in the future. As a result of the future workshop, four different themes were established, which were studied further during the second Delphi round. The themes are future service and operation concepts; versatile uses of the space in ships; communication of environmental benefits of ships, future energy solutions and social interaction between passengers onboard. In addition to generating the scenarios, further aim of the thesis is to implement the Delphi method and workshop activity as foresight tools for STX Europe and to produce a chart of a future shipbuilding foresight community to can serve the open innovation processes in the maritime cluster as a whole.

The worlds’ population is increasing and cities have become more crowded with people and vehicles. Communities in the fringe of metropolitans’ increase the traffic done with private cars, but also increase the need for public transportation. People have typically needs traveling to work located in city centers during the morning time, and return to suburbs in the afternoon or evening. Rail based passenger transport is environmentally friendly transport mode with high capacity to transport large volume of people. Railways have been regulated markets with national incumbent having monopoly position. Opening the market for competition is believed to have a positive effect by increasing the efficiency of the industry. National passenger railway market is opened for competition only in few countries, where as international traffic in EU countries was deregulated in 2010. The objective of this study is to examine the passenger railway market of three North European countries, Sweden, Denmark and Estonia. The interest was also to get an understanding of the current situation and how the deregulation has proceeded. Theory of deregulation is unfolded with literature analyses and empirical part of the study is constructed from two parts. Customer satisfaction survey was chosen as a method to collect real life experiences from the passengers and measure their knowledge of the market situation and possible changes appeared. Interviews of experts from the industry and labor unions give more insights and able better understanding for example of social consequences caused from opening the market for competition. Expert interviews were conducted by using semi-structured theme interview. Based on the results of this study, deregulation has proceeded quite differently in the three countries researched. Sweden is the most advanced country, where the passenger railway market is open for new entrants. Denmark and Estonia are lagging behind. Opening the market is considered positive among passengers and most of the experts interviewed. Common for the interviews were the labour unions negative perspective concerning deregulation. Despite the fact deregulation is considered positive among the respondents of the customer satisfaction survey, they could not name railway undertakings operating in their country. Generally respondents were satisfied with the commuter trains. Ticket price, punctuality of trains and itinerary affect the most to customer satisfaction.
