Metsäpolttoaineiden käyttö kasvaa lämpö- ja voimalaitoksissa ja mahdollisissa biojalostamoissa. Metsäpolttoaineilla voidaan saavuttaa päästövähennyksiä korvaamalla päästöintensiivisempiä polttoaineita. Metsäpolttoaineen kysynnän kasvu suurkäyttöpaikoilla luo uusia vaatimuksia metsäbiomassan hankintaan. Metsäpolttoaineiden vesitiekuljetuksen sisältämiä logistiikkajärjestelmiä kehittämällä toimitusvarmuutta pystytään parantamaan ja hankintaa laajentamaan kustannustehokkaasti ja ympäristöystävällisesti. Kuljetuskokeilut antoivat uutta tietoa vesitiekuljetuksen sisältämästä hankinnasta. Lastikapasiteetti nykyisen kaltaisessa Eurooppa IIa -suurproomussa vaihtelee 1200 tonnista jopa 1800 tonniin (kosteus 40 %) riippuen tiivistymisestä ja proomun modifiointiasteesta. Metsähakkeen energiatiheys oli suurproomukuljetuksissa keskimäärin 1 MWh/i-m3, joka oli 25 % parempi kuin vertailun hakerekkakuljetuksissa. Vesitiekuljetuksen kustannukset olivat kuljetuskokeiluissa lastauksineen ja purkuineen 0,02 €/MWh/km, ollen noin 20 % ketjun kokonaiskustannuksista. Simuloinnin edullisimpien vesitiekuljetusvaihtoehtojen vaihteluvälin kustannukset olivat vastaavasti 0,013 - 0,026 €/MWh/km. Lastauksen ja purun kustannus oli 0,4 - 0,6 €/MWh ja vesitiekuljetus 0,9 - 2,0 €/MWh (100 km). Ketjun kokonaiskustannukset hakkuutähdehakkeelle vaihtelivat simuloinnin edullisimpien vaihtoehtojen perusteella välillä 10,8 - 12,1 €/MWh (30 km rekka, 100 km proomu). Kuljetusketjujen simuloinnin kustannukset osoittivat proomukuljetusketjun olevan kilpailukykyinen vaihtoehto hakerekkakuljetusketjulle kalustosta ja vuosittaisista käyttötunneista riippuen kuljetusetäisyyden ylittäessä 100 km. Kustannustehokkain ratkaisu vesitiekuljetuksessa saavutettiin pienen aluksen ja suuren kokoluokan proomuyksikön kytkyeellä. Haketus kannattaa toteuttaa ennen proomukuljetuksen osuutta metsähakkeen paremman tiiviyden ja käsiteltävyyden perusteella. Logistiikkajärjestelmiä pitää kehittää tapauskohtaisesti käyttöpaikan tarpeet ja olosuhteet huomioon ottaen. Metsäpolttoaineiden vesitiekuljetuksen sisältämän logistiikan liiketoimintamallien vertailussa arvioitiin vaihtoehtoiset ulkoistetut toimintamallit paremmaksi kuin nykyinen urakointimalli. Tämä mahdollistaa paremman metsähakkeen saatavuuden ja logistiikan tehokkuuden lastausterminaaleissa. Rapid ongoing evolution of multiprocessors will lead to systems with hundreds of processing cores integrated in a single chip. An emerging challenge is the implementation of reliable and efficient interconnection between these cores as well as other components in the systems. Network-on-Chip is an interconnection approach which is intended to solve the performance bottleneck caused by traditional, poorly scalable communication structures such as buses. However, a large on-chip network involves issues related to congestion problems and system control, for instance. Additionally, faults can cause problems in multiprocessor systems. These faults can be transient faults, permanent manufacturing faults, or they can appear due to aging. To solve the emerging traffic management, controllability issues and to maintain system operation regardless of faults a monitoring system is needed. The monitoring system should be dynamically applicable to various purposes and it should fully cover the system under observation. In a large multiprocessor the distances between components can be relatively long. Therefore, the system should be designed so that the amount of energy-inefficient long-distance communication is minimized. This thesis presents a dynamically clustered distributed monitoring structure. The monitoring is distributed so that no centralized control is required for basic tasks such as traffic management and task mapping. To enable extensive analysis of different Network-on-Chip architectures, an in-house SystemC based simulation environment was implemented. It allows transaction level analysis without time consuming circuit level implementations during early design phases of novel architectures and features. The presented analysis shows that the dynamically clustered monitoring structure can be efficiently utilized for traffic management in faulty and congested Network-on-Chip-based multiprocessor systems. The monitoring structure can be also successfully applied for task mapping purposes. Furthermore, the analysis shows that the presented in-house simulation environment is flexible and practical tool for extensive Network-on-Chip architecture analysis.

Tässä työssä tutkittiin eri mitoitusmenetelmien soveltuvuutta hitsattujen rakenteiden vä-symislaskennassa. Käytetyt menetelmät olivat rakenteellinen jännityksen menetelmä, te-hollisen lovijännityksen menetelmä ja murtumismekaniikka. Lisäksi rakenteellisen jänni-tyksen määrittämiseksi käytettiin kolmea eri menetelmää. Menetelmät olivat pintaa pitkin ekstrapolointi, paksuuden yli linearisointi ja Dongin menetelmä. Väsymiskestävyys määritettiin kahdelle hitsiliitoksen yksityiskohdalle. Laskenta tehtiin käyttäen elementtimenetelmää rakenteen 3D-mallille. Tutkittavasta aggregaattirungosta oli olemassa FE-malli mutta alimallinnustekniikkaa hyödyntämällä pystyttiin yksityiskohtai-semmin tutkimaan vain pientä osaa koko rungon mallista. Rakenteellisen jännityksen menetelmä perustuu nimellisiin jännityksiin. Kyseinen mene-telmä ei vaadi geometrian muokkausta. Yleensä rakenteellisen jännityksen menetelmää käytetään hitsin rajaviivan väsymislaskennassa, mutta joissain tapauksissa sitä on käytetty juuren puolen laskennassa. Tässä työssä rakenteellisen jännityksen menetelmää käytettiin myös juuren puolen tutkimisessa. Tehollista lovijännitystä tutkitaan mallintamalla 1 mm fiktiiviset pyöristykset sekä rajaviivalle että juuren puolelle. Murtumismekaniikan so-veltuvuutta tutkittiin käyttämällä Franc2D särön kasvun simulointiohjelmaa. Väsymislaskennan tulokset eivät merkittävästi poikkea eri laskentamenetelmien välillä. Ainoastaan rakenteellisen jännityksen Dongin menetelmällä saadaan poikkeavia tuloksia. Tämä johtuu pääasiassa siitä, että menetelmän laskentaetäisyydestä ei ole tietoa. Raken-teellisen jännityksen menetelmällä, tehollisen lovijännityksen menetelmällä ja murtumis-mekaniikalla saadaan samansuuntaiset tulokset. Suurin ero menetelmien välillä on mal-linnuksen ja laskennan vaatima työmäärä.

Metsäpolttoaineen kysyntä kasvaa voimakkaasti johtuen päästökaupasta ja vaihtoehtoisten polttoaineiden hintatason kohoamisesta. Metsäpolttoaineen kysynnän kasvu aiheuttaa uusia vaatimuksia polttoaineen hankintaan. Hankintaa täytyy monipuolistaa ja laajentaa, jotta saataisiin riittävä määrä metsäpolttoainetta suurkäyttäjille. Hankintalogistiikkajärjestelmiä täytyy kehittää, jotta saataisiin metsäpolttoainetta kustannustehokkaasti suurkäyttäjille. Metsäpolttoaineiden kaukokuljetus rekalla ei ole kannattavaa pitkistä etäisyyksistä, sillä metsä-polttoaineiden energiamäärä suhteessa tilavuuteen on alhainen. Vesitiekuljetus on osoittautunut kustannustehokkaaksi raakapuun kuljetuksessa pitkillä etäisyyksillä. Vesitiekuljetus proomukalustolla voisi olla sopiva kuljetusmuoto myös metsäpolttoaineille. Tämän tutkimuksen tarkoituksena oli selvittää vesitiekuljetuksen mahdollisuuksia osana metsä-polttoaineiden hankintalogistiikkajärjestelmää. Julkaisussa käsiteltiin vesitiekuljetuksen sisältämää hankintalogistiikkajärjestelmää metsästä voimalaitokselle. Julkaisu koostui kolmesta osasta. Ensimmäisessä osassa käytiin läpi raakapuun ja metsäpolttoaineiden kaukokuljetusmuotoja. Toisessa osassa tarkasteltiin metsäpolttoaineiden hankintamenetelmiä. Kolmannessa osassa keskityttiin tarkastelemaan tarkemmin terminaalihaketusjärjestelmää osana metsäpolttoaineiden vesi-tiekuljetuksia. Tutkimus koostui asiantuntijahaastatteluista ja aikaisemmasta tutkimustiedosta. Tämä julkaisu auttaa hahmottamaan vesitiekuljetuksen mahdollisuuksia osana metsäpolttoaineiden hankintalogistiikkaa. Parhaimmillaan vesitiekuljetus mahdollistaa kustannustehokkaan vaihtoehdon laajentaa metsäpolttoaineiden hankinta-aluetta.

The goal of the present work was to describe the wood fuel market of Ukraine and the Republic of Belarus, to estimate wood fuel potential and to research opportunities of wood fuel trading. Nowadays the wood waste, wood residues and by-products are becoming more and more potential raw materials for energy production. Against the background of unstable prices of traditional energy sources and environmental degradation, European States are planning to get 12% of energy from alternative sources already in 2010. Wastes of wood-working and agricultural productions are such sources. At present time the most popular wood biofuels are wood pellets, briquettes, wood chips and logs. Ukraine and the Republic of Belarus have a rather big potential of wood fuel resources. But wood fuels markets of these countries are on the entry level and quite disorganized. There is almost no domestic usage of wood biofuel. All produced pellets, briquettes as well as wood chips and logs go to the export, but the volumes are not high at present time. Ukraine and the Republic of Belarus have a very suitable geographical location. The most promising directions of wood fuel trading are developed wood fuel markets of Northern countries, Austria, Germany as well as actively developing markets of Poland and Hungary. At the long distance truck and sea transportation are the most appropriate. At a short distance cheap transportation by rail is more suitable. Thereby export is a potential opportunity for development of wood fuel production and in the future for usage in the researched countries.

In my PhD dissertation, I have examined a group of people of Scandinavian origin received by Ospizio dei Convertendi. This group has been hitherto largely unknown to historical research. The Ospizio was an institute founded by the Oratorian Congregation in Rome in 1673 to provide religious instruction and material aid to both recent and aspirant converts to Roman Catholicism. My research traces the profile of converts and a typology of motives, examining different factors which influenced the conversion process. I show that the key factors were often of a social rather than a religious nature. Moreover, I have analyzed the hospice in the context of Counter-Reformation charity as well. In terms of numbers, the Scandinavians formed a somewhat marginal yet not insignificant group within the Roman hospice. Out of a total of 2203 guests received between 1673 and 1706, 4.6 % were Scandinavians: 74 Swedes (including Finland and Livonia) and 27 Danes (including Norway). They came from a rigorously Protestant region which reacted to Catholicism with severe legislative measures. Converts to Catholicism risked confiscation of their goods, expulsion or even capital punishment. Since both Sweden and Denmark were practically impenetrable to Catholicism at the time and clandestine missionary attempts often failed before they had even properly started, the Roman Catholic Church shifted its interest towards Northerners arriving in Rome, a preferred destination for young noblemen, artists and migrant craftsmen. The material related to Ospizio dei Convertendi, conserved in the Vatican archives, is a scarcely known yet unusually rich source, not only for the religious history of our continent, but also for social history and the study of migration in early modern Europe. It contains a wealth of information about members of the subordinate classes, of their travels and lives in Europe. The profile delineated in these documents is of individuals who had a wide range of different professions and different aspirations. These documents encompass a vast social spectrum that was highly mobile on a continent which by that time had become pluriconfessional. Therefore, these migrants faced the complex religious reality in their everyday life. The principal corpus of my research consists of two types of manuscript sources created for administrative and in a way also for apologetic purposes of the Roman Catholic Church. My starting point is the Primo registro generale of Ospizio dei Convertendi. This is a volume in which the following information about each guest was registered: name, nationality, city of origin, age, sex, profession, confession professed before converting, date of arrival, departure, abjuration and baptism. Typically, the convert was male, originating from Stockholm or Copenhagen, from 21 to 30 years of age. The biggest occupational groups in descending order were soldiers, noblemen, craftsmen and sailors. Thus the data reflects a multiform reality of interurban and long distance migration, ideals regarding the education of young noblemen and gentry as well as the need of European armies to hire foreign mercenaries in their various campaigns. Against this background the almost total absence of women is hardly surprising: there is only one woman in the material I have studied. The second main source, Nota degl’ospiti ricevuti e spese fatte per essi, sheds more light on the choices of the converts, their motivations and their lives outside Scandinavia before reaching Rome. This narrative material permits an analysis which completes but also goes far beyond the columns of the Institute’s general register. This material consists of reports written by Catholic priests based on an interview conducted upon each guest’s arrival. The material frequently includes information on what the converts would do following their departure from the Institute as well. These sources have a specific narrative form and contain short biographies, list reasons for converting and information about the journey from the North to the Mediterranean - a journey which in many cases took several years. Moreover, they show that certain unorthodox practices such as calling on the saints and pleading for help from them were not uncommon in the Protestant popular religion. The recording of information on conversions from Protestantism to Catholicism reflects both religious and social interest on the part of the receiving institute. The information obtained was used for the purposes of religious teaching, for finding adequate ways of inserting the convert into Italian society so that he could earn a living, and to find effective methods to convert others with a similar cultural and geographical background. The stories recorded were based on interviews with the newly-arrived, information obtained from a travel companion or fellow countrymen, or from written documents the aspirant converts carried with them. These sources illustrate, although sometimes in rather simplified ways, the circumstances and motivations which were relevant to the choice of changing one’s confession. In addition, I have examined petitions addressed to the hospice and other Roman authorities in order to get financial aid. These petitions were written by Italian scrittori, and they contain certain conventions and topoi of presenting the conversion with the purpose of improving the chances of obtaining financial aid. It is through these filters, which may seem initially almost invisible, that the remote voice of the converts reaches us. The results of the analysis are particularly interesting because they disagree with some of the principal conclusions of previous work on the subject. First, earlier research has focused almost exclusively on the conversions of noblemen, and has argued, second, that the Queen Christina of Sweden was the driving force behind their change of confession. The sources examined for this dissertation present a profile of long-distance migrants, many of them members of the subordinate classes, who were looking for ways to make their living in Europe. These people had in many cases left their country of origin several years earlier and not for religious reasons, so, crucially, we are not dealing with confessional migration in these cases. Rather, conversion was a complex process, intricately tied up with strategies of survival, integration and upward social mobility. At the same time, while these components are significant on their own right, they do not necessarily point to the absence of motivations of a more clearly religious nature.

"Biopolttoaineiden saatavuus ja hankintalogistiikka Kaakkois-Suomessa" -hankkeen tavoitteena oli tuottaa ajantasaista ja paikkaan sidottua tietoa energiatuotantoon soveltuvan biomassan saatavuudesta ja biomassapotentiaalin tehokkaan käytön mahdollistavasta logistiikkajärjestelmästä Kaakkois-Suomen alueella. Tarkastelussa mukana olleet polttoaineet eli metsä- ja peltobiomassat sekä turve ovat ns. paikallisia polttoaineita, joiden hankinta tapahtuu maaseudulta, ensisijaisesti mahdollisimman läheltä kutakin käyttöpaikkaa. Hankkeessa tutkittiin mahdollisuuksia lisätä paikallista polttoaineenhankintaa, kuljetusmääriä ja -kalustoa järkevästi 2010-luvulla toteutettavan energiapolitiikan myötä kasvavan polttoainetarpeen puitteissa. Rautatie- ja vesitiekuljetusten hyödyntämistä logistiikassa tutkittiin kahden tapaustutkimuksen avulla. Tutkittavia asioita olivat myös tuotantoketjujen lisääntyvä työvoimatarve sekä maantieteellisesti laajenevan raaka-ainehankinnan kasvihuonekaasupäästöistä aiheutuvat ympäristövaikutukset. Tärkeimpinä tuloksina saatiin tietoa siitä, kuinka laajalle alueelle biopolttoaineiden hankinta eri asiantilojen vallitessa Kaakkois-Suomen alueella ulottuu, ja millaisia hankintalogistiikkaan liittyviä ratkaisuja voidaan ottaa käyttöön alueellisen polttoainepulan muodostuessa. Logistiikan kannalta Kaakkois-Suomen etuja ovat monipuoliset kuljetusverkostot, mutta toisaalta varsinkin hyvät yhteydet ulkomaille rajoittavat paikallisesti investointiaktiivisuutta bioenergian tuotanto- ja käsittelykaluston osalta. Lisäksi maaseudun yrittäjien keskuudessa epävarmuutta aiheuttavat heilahtelevat raakapuumarkkinat ja muuttuva energiatukipolitiikka.

The twin-city model has found to increase economical activity and well-being. The similar economical, social and cultural background of Finland and Estonia as well as the EU integration give good preconditions to create a twin-city of Helsinki and Tallinn. The relatively long distance between Helsinki and Tallinn is challenging. Therefore, good transport infrastructure and functioning connections are required to form a twin-city of Helsinki and Tallinn. The connections between these cities can be considered also in broader perspective than only from the viewpoint of the twin-city concept. New markets areas have been emerged in Europe due to collapse of planned economy and integration of Europe. Also the transport routes to the markets are changing. The Hel-sinki-Tallinn sea route can be considered as a fast route to the new markets in the Cen-tral and Eastern Europe. The Helsinki-Tallinn sea route is also a potential route to the Western European markets. This study provides an analysis of transport and cargo flows between Finland and Esto-nia for regional and local planners. The main purpose of the study is to clarify the pre-sent situation of the seaborne cargo flows on the Helsinki-Tallinn route and how the cargo flows will develop in the future. The study focuses on the following thematic enti-ties: the Finnish and Estonian seaborne transport system and cargo flows, the structure and volume of the cargo flows on the Helsinki-Tallinn route, the hinterland cargo flows on the Helsinki-Tallinn route and the transport methods used on the Helsinki-Tallinn route. The study was carried out as a desk research, a statistical analysis and an inter-view study during the spring–autumn 2011. The study reveals that during the period 2002–2010 the volume of the seaborne cargo traffic between Finland and Estonia has increased significantly while the trend of the trade volume between Finland and Estonia has remained nearly constant. This indicates that the route via Estonia is increasingly used in the Finnish foreign trade. Because the ports of Helsinki and Tallinn are the main ports in the cargo traffic between Finland and Estonia, the role of the Helsinki-Tallinn route as a sea leg in the hinterland connections of Finland has increased. The growth of the cargo volume on the Helsinki-Tallinn route was estimated to continue on the annual level of 10 % during the next couple of years. In the long run the growth of the cargo volumes depends on the economical and indus-trial development of the former Eastern European countries. If the IMO’s sulphur regu-lations will come in force, the Helsinki-Tallinn route will become one of the main routes also to the Western European markets, besides of the route via Sweden. The study also shows that the fast and reliable connections year round on the Helsinki-Tallinn route have made it possible for service and logistics companies to reconsider their logistics strategies in a new way in the both side of the Gulf of Finland. Anyway, the ropax concept is seen as the only economical profitable solution on the Helsinki-Tallinn route because cargo and passenger traffic are supporting each other. The trucks (vehicle combinations) will remain the main mode of transport on the Helsinki-Tallinn route because general cargo is the main commodity on the route. IMO’s sulphur regula-tions and the changes in the structure of the Finnish industry may create prerequisites for rail road transport in the hinterland connections of Finland. Sähkönkulutuksen kasvaessa jakeluverkossa syntyy yhä enemmän jännitteenalenemia, jotka ylittävät sähkön laatustandardin asettamat raja-arvot. Jännitteenalenemista kärsivät etenkin syrjäseuduilla asuvat ihmiset, joiden käyttökohteet sijaitsevat kaukana jakelumuuntajasta. Perinteinen tapa on ollut kasvattaa syöttävän jakelukaapelin poikkipinta-alaa ja vaihtaa jakelumuuntaja suurempaan ongelman ratkaisemiseksi, mutta investointi on kuitenkin kallis eikä välttämättä maksa itseään koskaan takaisin. On myös mahdollista, että aiempaa suuremman muuntajan tyhjäkäyntihäviöillä on huonontava vaikutus järjestelmän energiatehokkuuteen. Tällöin voi olla kokonaistaloudellisesti kannattavampaa liittää sähköverkkoon laite, jolla voidaan korjata jännitteenalenemia. Diplomityössä tutkitaan säästömuuntajaan perustuvaa jännitteenkorotinta, jolla voidaan vähentää jakeluverkon jännitteenalenemien aiheuttamia haittoja. Työssä tutkitaan laitteen eri kytkintopologioita sekä niiden ohjausmenetelmiä, joilla voidaan muuttaa säästömuuntajan käämikierrosmääriä sen ollessa kuormitettuna.

Time series of hourly electricity spot prices have peculiar properties. Electricity is by its nature difficult to store and has to be available on demand. There are many reasons for wanting to understand correlations in price movements, e.g. risk management purposes. The entire analysis carried out in this thesis has been applied to the New Zealand nodal electricity prices: offer prices (from 29 May 2002 to 31 March 2009) and final prices (from 1 January 1999 to 31 March 2009). In this paper, such natural factors as location of the node and generation type in the node that effects the correlation between nodal prices have been reviewed. It was noticed that the geographical factor affects the correlation between nodes more than others. Therefore, the visualisation of correlated nodes was done. However, for the offer prices the clear separation of correlated and not correlated nodes was not obtained. Finally, it was concluded that location factor most strongly affects correlation of electricity nodal prices; problems in visualisation probably associated with power losses when the power is transmitted over long distance.

Suomen tavoitteena on nostaa metsähakkeen käyttö 25 TWh:iin vuoteen 2020 mennessä. Tavoitteen saavuttaminen edellyttää, että metsähakkeen käyttö ja tuotanto on kannatta-vuudeltaan houkuttelevaa. Suuri osa Suomen energiapuusta saadaan ainespuun hakkuun yhteydessä kerättävistä hakkuutähteistä, josta valmistetaan haketta lämpölaitosten tarpee-seen. Tämän työn tavoitteena oli tarkastella suomalaisen metsäteollisuusyrityksen metsähak-keen tuottamiseen liittyvää arvoketjua ja löytää sieltä ne prosessin osat, joissa arvoa syn-tyy eniten sekä ne prosessin osat, joissa arvoa mahdollisesti menetetään. Arvoketjun tarkastelun lisäksi työn tavoitteena oli selvittää mahdollisuuksia latvusmassa-hakkeen kannattavuuden parantamiseen case yrityksessä. Arvoketju analyysiin perustuen tutkimuksessa voitiin todeta suurimman metsäenergian arvon syntyvän hakkuutähteen kuivumisen seurauksena. Liian pitkä varastointiaika sitä vastoin aiheuttaa kuiva-ainetappiosta johtuvaa arvon menetystä hankintaketjussa. Suurin vaikutus hakkuutähdehakkeen kannattavuuteen on hakkeen alhaisella kosteudella. Tutkimuksessa todettiin lisäksi kaukokuljetuskustannusten vaikuttavan erityisen suuresti haketuotannon kannattavuuteen.

This thesis studies gray-level distance transforms, particularly the Distance Transform on Curved Space (DTOCS). The transform is produced by calculating distances on a gray-level surface. The DTOCS is improved by definingmore accurate local distances, and developing a faster transformation algorithm. The Optimal DTOCS enhances the locally Euclidean Weighted DTOCS (WDTOCS) with local distance coefficients, which minimize the maximum error from the Euclideandistance in the image plane, and produce more accurate global distance values.Convergence properties of the traditional mask operation, or sequential localtransformation, and the ordered propagation approach are analyzed, and compared to the new efficient priority pixel queue algorithm. The Route DTOCS algorithmdeveloped in this work can be used to find and visualize shortest routes between two points, or two point sets, along a varying height surface. In a digital image, there can be several paths sharing the same minimal length, and the Route DTOCS visualizes them all. A single optimal path can be extracted from the route set using a simple backtracking algorithm. A new extension of the priority pixel queue algorithm produces the nearest neighbor transform, or Voronoi or Dirichlet tessellation, simultaneously with the distance map. The transformation divides the image into regions so that each pixel belongs to the region surrounding the reference point, which is nearest according to the distance definition used. Applications and application ideas for the DTOCS and its extensions are presented, including obstacle avoidance, image compression and surface roughness evaluation.

Työssä tutkittiin kiekkosuodattimeen liittyviä ulkoisia simulointimalleja integroidussa simulointiympäristössä. Työn tarkoituksena oli parantaa olemassa olevaa mekanistista kiekkosuodatinmallia. Malli laadittiin dynaamiseen paperiteollisuuden tarpeisiin tehtyyn simulaattoriin (APMS), jossa olevaan alkuperäiseen mekanistiseen malliin tehtiin ulkoinen lisämalli, joka käyttää hyväkseen kiekkosuodatinvalmistajan mittaustuloksia. Laitetiedon saatavuutta suodattimien käyttäjille parannettiin luomalla Internetissä sijaitsevalle palvelimelle kiekkosuodattimen laitetietomäärittelyt. Suodatinvalmistaja voi palvella asiakkaitaan viemällä laitetiedot palvelimelle ja yhdistämällä laitetiedon simulointimalliin. Tämä on mahdollista Internetin ylitse käytettävän integroidun simulointiympäristön avulla, jonka on tarkoitus kokonaisvaltaisesti yhdistää simulointi ja prosessisuunnittelu. Suunnittelijalle tarjotaan työkalut, joilla dynaaminen simulointi, tasesimulointi ja kaavioiden piirtäminen onnistuu prosessilaitetiedon ollessa saatavilla. Nämä työkalut on tarkoitus toteuttaa projektissa nimeltä Galleria, jossa luodaan prosessimalli- ja laitetietopalvelin Internetiin. Gallerian käyttöliittymän avulla prosessisuunnittelija voi käyttää erilaisia simulointiohjelmistoja ja niihin luotuja valmiita malleja, sekä saada käsiinsä ajan tasalla olevaa laitetietoa. Ulkoinen kiekkosuodatinmalli laskee suodosvirtaamat ja suodosten pitoisuudet likaiselle, kirkkaalle ja superkirkkaalle suodokselle. Mallin syöttöparametrit ovat kiekkojen pyörimisnopeus, sisään tulevan syötön pitoisuus, suotautuvuus (freeness) ja säätöparametri, jolla säädetään likaisen ja kirkkaan suodoksen keskinäinen suhde. Suotautuvuus kertoo mistä massasta on kyse. Mitä suurempi suotautuvuus on, sitä paremmin massa suodattuu ja sitä puhtaampia suodokset yleensä ovat. Mallin parametrit viritettiin regressioanalyysillä ja valmistajan palautetta apuna käyttäen. Käyttäjä voi valita haluaako hän käyttää ulkoista vai alkuperäistä mallia. Alkuperäinen malli täytyy ensin alustaa antamalla sille nominaaliset toimintapisteet virtaamille ja pitoisuuksille tietyllä pyörimisnopeudella. Ulkoisen mallin yhtälöitä voi käyttää alkuperäisen mallin alustamiseen, jos alkuperäinen malli toimii ulkoista paremmin. Ulkoista mallia voi käyttää myös ilman simulointiohjelmaa Galleria-palvelimelta käsin. Käyttäjälle avautuu näin mahdollisuus tarkastella kiekkosuodattimien parametreja ja nähdä suotautumistulokset oman työasemansa ääreltä mistä tahansa, kunhan Internetyhteys on olemassa. Työn tuloksena kiekkosuodattimien laitetiedon saatavuus käyttäjille parani ja alkuperäisen simulointimallin rajoituksia ja puutteita vähennettiin.

Dreaming is a pure form of phenomenality, created by the brain untouched by external stimulation or behavioral activity, yet including a full range of phenomenal contents. Thus, it has been suggested that the dreaming brain could be used as a model system in a biological research program on consciousness (Revonsuo, 2006). In the present thesis, the philosophical view of biological realism is accepted, and thus, dreaming is considered as a natural biological phenomenon, explainable in naturalistic terms. The major theoretical contribution of the present thesis is that it explores dreaming from a multidisciplinary perspective, integrating information from various fields of science, such as dream research, consciousness research, evolutionary psychology, and cognitive neuroscience. Further, it places dreaming into a multilevel framework, and investigates the constitutive, etiological, and contextual explanations for dreaming. Currently, the only theory offering a full multilevel explanation for dreaming, that is, a theory including constitutive, etiological, and contextual level explanations, is the Threat Simulation Theory (TST) (Revonsuo, 2000a; 2000b). The empirical significance of the present thesis lies in the tests conducted to test this specific theory put forth to explain the form, content, and biological function of dreaming. The first step in the empirical testing of the TST was to define exact criteria for what is a ‘threatening event’ in dreams, and then to develop a detailed and reliable content analysis scale with which it is possible to empirically explore and quantify threatening events in dreams. The second step was to seek answers to the following questions derived from the TST: How frequent threatening events are in dreams? What kind of qualities these events have? How threatening events in dreams relate to the most recently encoded or the most salient memory traces of threatening events experienced in waking life? What are the effects of exposure to severe waking life threat on dreams? The results reveal that threatening events are relatively frequent in dreams, and that the simulated threats are realistic. The most common threats include aggression, are targeted mainly against the dream self, and include simulations of relevant and appropriate defensive actions. Further, real threat experiences activate the threat simulation system in a unique manner, and dream content is modulated by the activation of long term episodic memory traces with highest negative saliency. To sum up, most of the predictions of the TST tested in this thesis received considerable support. The TST presents a strong argument that explains the specific design of dreams as threat simulations. The TST also offers a plausible explanation for why dreaming would have been selected for: because dreaming interacted with the environment in such a way that enhanced fitness of ancestral humans. By referring to a single threat simulation mechanism it furthermore manages to explain a wide variety of dream content data that already exists in the literature, and to predict the overall statistical patterns of threat content in different samples of dreams. The TST and the empirical tests conducted to test the theory are a prime example of what a multidisciplinary approach to mental phenomena can accomplish. Thus far, dreaming seems to have always resided in the periphery of science, never regarded worth to be studied by the mainstream. Nevertheless, when brought to the spotlight, the study of dreaming can greatly benefit from ideas in diverse branches of science. Vice versa, knowledge learned from the study of dreaming can be applied in various disciplines. The main contribution of the present thesis lies in putting dreaming back where it belongs, that is, into the spotlight in the cross-road of various disciplines.

This thesis presents an approach for formulating and validating a space averaged drag model for coarse mesh simulations of gas-solid flows in fluidized beds using the two-fluid model. Proper modeling for fluid dynamics is central in understanding any industrial multiphase flow. The gas-solid flows in fluidized beds are heterogeneous and usually simulated with the Eulerian description of phases. Such a description requires the usage of fine meshes and small time steps for the proper prediction of its hydrodynamics. Such constraint on the mesh and time step size results in a large number of control volumes and long computational times which are unaffordable for simulations of large scale fluidized beds. If proper closure models are not included, coarse mesh simulations for fluidized beds do not give reasonable results. The coarse mesh simulation fails to resolve the mesoscale structures and results in uniform solids concentration profiles. For a circulating fluidized bed riser, such predicted profiles result in a higher drag force between the gas and solid phase and also overestimated solids mass flux at the outlet. Thus, there is a need to formulate the closure correlations which can accurately predict the hydrodynamics using coarse meshes. This thesis uses the space averaging modeling approach in the formulation of closure models for coarse mesh simulations of the gas-solid flow in fluidized beds using Geldart group B particles. In the analysis of formulating the closure correlation for space averaged drag model, the main parameters for the modeling were found to be the averaging size, solid volume fraction, and distance from the wall. The closure model for the gas-solid drag force was formulated and validated for coarse mesh simulations of the riser, which showed the verification of this modeling approach. Coarse mesh simulations using the corrected drag model resulted in lowered values of solids mass flux. Such an approach is a promising tool in the formulation of appropriate closure models which can be used in coarse mesh simulations of large scale fluidized beds.
