TVO suunnittelee reaktoritehon 10 %:n korotusta Olkiluoto 1 ja 2 -voimalaitoksille. Reaktoriteho nostetaan 2500 MW:sta 2750 MW:iin polttoaineen rikastusastetta nostamalla ja pääkiertovirtausta kasvattamalla. Samalla syöttövesivirtaus reaktoriin ja tuorehöyryvirtaus turpiineille kasvaa. Lauhteenpuhdistusjärjestelmän kapasiteettia ei voida kuitenkaan kasvattaa, joten massavirran lisäys toteutetaan ottamalla käyttöön korkeapainesivulauhteen eteenpäinpumppaus. Lauhteen esilämmityslinjojen, lauhteenpuhdistuksen ja syöttövesipumppujen massavirta säilyy siten nykyisellään. Muita merkittäviä tehonkorotukseen liittyviä laitosmuutoksia ovat pääkiertopumppujen uusinta ja korkeapaineturpiinin muutokset. Tehonkorotetun prosessin käytettävyyden varmistamiseksi tehdään häiriöanalyysejä Apros-prosessisimulointiohjelmistoa käyttäen. OL1 ja OL2 -laitoksista on olemassa validoitu 2500 MW:n laitosmalli, josta muokatulla 2750 MW:n laitosmallilla simuloinnit tehdään. Häiriöanalyysien avulla selvitetään säätöjärjestelmien kyky pitää prosessin tila hallinnassa ilman suojausautomaation laukeamista. Simuloituihin tapauksiin kuuluu pumppujen ja venttiilien vikaantumistapauksia sekä turpiini- ja reaktoripuolen pikasulku- ja osittaispikasulkutapauksia. Myös meriveden lämpötilan vaikutusta häiriötilanteisiin tarkastellaan. Analyysien perusteella voimalaitosten ohjaus- ja suojausautomaatio toimivat hyvin myös korotetulla teholla. Tehonkorotuksen jälkeiset suuremmat massavirrat aiheuttavat kuitenkin voimakkaampia reaktoripaineen ja -tehon vaihteluita varsinkin venttiilien sulkeutumistapauksissa. Simuloinnit osoittivat, että tehonkorotus 2500 MW:sta 2750 MW:iin on mahdollinen, mutta aiheuttaa pieniä muutoksia laitoksen suojausjärjestelmien laukaisurajoihin.

This thesis focuses on tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinases 4 (TIMP4) which is the newest member of a small gene and protein family of four closely related endogenous inhibitors of extracellular matrix (ECM) degrading enzymes. Existing data on TIMP4 suggested that it exhibits a more restricted expression pattern than the other TIMPs with high expression levels in heart, brain, ovary and skeletal muscle. These observations and the fact that the ECM is of special importance to provide the cardiovascular system with structural strength combined with elasticity and distensibility, prompted the present molecular biologic investigation on TIMP4. In the first part of the study the murine Timp4 gene was cloned and characterized in detail. The structure of murine Timp4 genomic locus resembles that in other species and of the other Timps. The highest Timp4 expression was detected in heart, ovary and brain. As the expression pattern of Timp4 gives only limited information about its role in physiology and pathology, Timp4 knockout mice were generated next. The analysis of Timp4 knockout mice revealed that Timp4 deficiency has no obvious effect on the development, growth or fertility of mice. Therefore, Timp4 deficient mice were challenged using available cardiovascular models, i.e. experimental cardiac pressure overload and myocardial infarction. In the former model, Timp4 deficiency was found to be compensated by Timp2 overexpression, whereas in the myocardial infarct model, Timp4 deficiency resulted in increased mortality due to increased susceptibility for cardiac rupture. In the wound healing model, Timp4 deficiency was shown to result in transient retardation of re-epithelialization of cutaneous wounds. Melanoma tumor growth was similar in Timp4 deficient and control mice. Despite of this, lung metastasis of melanoma cells was significantly increased in Timp4 null mice. In an attempt to translate the current findings to patient material, TIMP4 expression was studied in human specimens representing different inflammatory cardiovascular pathologies, i.e. giant cell arteritis, atherosclerotic coronary arteries and heart allografts exhibiting signs of chronic rejection. The results showed that cardiovascular expression of TIMP4 is elevated particularly in areas exhibiting inflammation. The results of the present studies suggest that TIMP4 has a special role in the regulation of tissue repair processes in the heart, and also in healing wounds and metastases. Furthermore, evidence is provided suggesting the usefulness of TIMP4 as a novel systemic marker for vascular inflammation.

Transportation of fluids is one of the most common and energy intensive processes in the industrial and HVAC sectors. Pumping systems are frequently subject to engineering malpractice when dimensioned, which can lead to poor operational efficiency. Moreover, pump monitoring requires dedicated measuring equipment, which imply costly investments. Inefficient pump operation and improper maintenance can increase energy costs substantially and even lead to pump failure. A centrifugal pump is commonly driven by an induction motor. Driving the induction motor with a frequency converter can diminish energy consumption in pump drives and provide better control of a process. In addition, induction machine signals can also be estimated by modern frequency converters, dispensing with the use of sensors. If the estimates are accurate enough, a pump can be modelled and integrated into the frequency converter control scheme. This can open the possibility of joint motor and pump monitoring and diagnostics, thereby allowing the detection of reliability-reducing operating states that can lead to additional maintenance costs. The goal of this work is to study the accuracy of rotational speed, torque and shaft power estimates calculated by a frequency converter. Laboratory tests were performed in order to observe estimate behaviour in both steady-state and transient operation. An induction machine driven by a vector-controlled frequency converter, coupled with another induction machine acting as load was used in the tests. The estimated quantities were obtained through the frequency converter’s Trend Recorder software. A high-precision, HBM T12 torque-speed transducer was used to measure the actual values of the aforementioned variables. The effect of the flux optimization energy saving feature on the estimate quality was also studied. A processing function was developed in MATLAB for comparison of the obtained data. The obtained results confirm the suitability of this particular converter to provide accurate enough estimates for pumping applications.

Rolling element bearings are essential components of rotating machinery. The spherical roller bearing (SRB) is one variant seeing increasing use, because it is self-aligning and can support high loads. It is becoming increasingly important to understand how the SRB responds dynamically under a variety of conditions. This doctoral dissertation introduces a computationally efficient, three-degree-of-freedom, SRB model that was developed to predict the transient dynamic behaviors of a rotor-SRB system. In the model, bearing forces and deflections were calculated as a function of contact deformation and bearing geometry parameters according to nonlinear Hertzian contact theory. The results reveal how some of the more important parameters; such as diametral clearance, the number of rollers, and osculation number; influence ultimate bearing performance. Distributed defects, such as the waviness of the inner and outer ring, and localized defects, such as inner and outer ring defects, are taken into consideration in the proposed model. Simulation results were verified with results obtained by applying the formula for the spherical roller bearing radial deflection and the commercial bearing analysis software. Following model verification, a numerical simulation was carried out successfully for a full rotor-bearing system to demonstrate the application of this newly developed SRB model in a typical real world analysis. Accuracy of the model was verified by comparing measured to predicted behaviors for equivalent systems.
