Background: Measurement of serum cotinine, a major metabolite of nicotine, provides a valid marker for quantifying exposure to tobacco smoke. Exposure to tobacco smoke causes vascular damage by multiple mechanisms, and it has been acknowledged as a risk factor for atherosclerosis. Multifactorial atherosclerosis begins in childhood, but the relationship between exposure to tobacco smoke and arterial changes related to early atherosclerosis have not been studied in children. Aims: The aim of the present study was to evaluate exposure to tobacco smoke with a biomarker, serum cotinine concentration, and its associations with markers of subclinical atherosclerosis and lipid profile in school-aged children and adolescents. Subjects and Methods: Serum cotinine concentration was measured using a gas chromatographic method annually between the ages 8 and 13 years in 538-625 children participating since infancy in a randomized, prospective atherosclerosis prevention trial STRIP (Special Turku coronary Risk factor Intervention Project). Conventional atherosclerosis risk factors were measured repeatedly. Vascular ultrasound studies were performed among 402 healthy 11-year-old children and among 494 adolescents aged 13 years. Results: According to serum cotinine measurements, a notable number of the school aged children and adolescents were exposed to tobacco smoke, but the exposure levels were only moderate. Exposure to tobacco smoke was associated with decreased endothelial function as measured with flow-mediated dilation of the brachial artery, decreased elasticity of the aorta, and increased carotid and aortic intima-media thickness. Longitudinal exposure to tobacco smoke was also related with increased apolipoprotein B and triglyceride levels in 13-year-old adolescents, whose body mass index and nutrient intakes did not differ. Conclusions: These findings suggest that exposure to tobacco smoke in childhood may play a significant role in the development of early atherosclerosis. Since the introduction of automatic orbital welding in pipeline application in 1961, significant improvements have been obtained in orbital pipe welding systems. Requirement of more productive welding systems for pipeline application forces manufacturers to innovate new advanced systems and welding processes for orbital welding method. Various methods have been used to make welding process adaptive, such as visual sensing, passive visual sensing, real-time intelligent control, scan welding technique, multi laser vision sensor, thermal scanning, adaptive image processing, neural network model, machine vision, and optical sensing. Numerous studies are reviewed and discussed in this Master’s thesis and based on a wide range of experiments which already have been accomplished by different researches the vision sensor are reported to be the best choice for adaptive orbital pipe welding system. Also, in this study the most welding processes as well as the most pipe variations welded by orbital welding systems mainly for oil and gas pipeline applications are explained. The welding results show that Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) and its variants like Surface Tension Transfer (STT) and modified short circuit are the most preferred processes in the welding of root pass and can be replaced to the Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW) in many applications. Furthermore, dual-tandem gas metal arc welding technique is currently considered the most efficient method in the welding of fill pass. Orbital GTAW process mostly is applied for applications ranging from single run welding of thin walled stainless tubes to multi run welding of thick walled pipes. Flux cored arc welding process is faster process with higher deposition rate and recently this process is getting more popular in pipe welding applications. Also, combination of gas metal arc welding and Nd:YAG laser has shown acceptable results in girth welding of land pipelines for oil and gas industry. This Master’s thesis can be implemented as a guideline in welding of pipes and tubes to achieve higher quality and efficiency. Also, this research can be used as a base material for future investigations to supplement present finding.

This work investigates the Bullwhip Effect, which is one of the most important phenomena in contemporary supply chain management. The author uses most recent theoretical apparatus to analyze operational activities of a leading FMCG company British American Tobacco Eastern Europe. This paper investigates and describes the process in BAT supply chain management and considers the impact of the Bullwhip Effect together with the potential risks threatening company's operations. Emergence of the Bullwhip Effect leads to supply chain inefficiency. This paper contains methodological supply chain risk mitigation recommendations, description of a real case study and an analytical study of internal and external supply chain processes
