Poetics and Politics. AugustoBoal and the Theatre of the Oppressed deals with the ideas and methods of the Brazilian author, director and theatre theorist Augusto Boal. The main purpose of the thesis is to give a description of what can be characterized as the poetics of Augusto Boal. What is the specific nature of his theatre methods and in what way do they differ from traditional theatre? How do these methods actually work? What is the overall intention of the Theatre of the Oppressed? As objects for my research I have selected Forum Theatre and Rainbow of Desire. The reason for this choice is partly that the two methods mentioned have become the most widespread among Boal's theatre forms, partly that they complement each other, the former being a method that works with problems of the material world, in realistic action-based narratives; the latter being an expressionistic analytical method, designed to deal with psychological problems and internalized oppression. Going from a micro- to a macro-level, I first examine the theatrical text of both forms, which in this case includes not only the verbal narrative, but also the performance itself and the setting of it, and even the implied conditions of the whole theatrical situation. Secondly, I turn to the encounter between the text and its actual recipient in the theatrical space. What happens, psychologically, when the observing, but passive spectator is turned into the actor of the play? Thirdly, I discuss the ideological and political implications of the Theatre ofthe Oppressed in real life. The way I interpret Boal's poetics, this is of vital importance. The purpose of the Theatre of the Oppressed is not anything resembling l'art pour l'art. In the contrary, its intention is to teach the oppressed the use of theatre as a martial art, so that they can fight and break the oppression in a social context of the real world. Thus the title Poetics and Politics.

Reflexive model of research-based theatre – processing innovation at the crossroads of theatre, reflection and practice-based innovation activities

Contemporary organisations have to embrace the notion of doing ‘more with less’. This challenges knowledge production within companies and public organisations, forcing them to reorganise their structures and rethink what knowledge production actually means in the context of innovation and how knowledge is actually produced among various professional groups within the organisation in their everyday actions. Innovations are vital for organisational survival, and ‘ordinary’ employees and customers are central but too-often ignored producers of knowledge for contemporary organisations. Broader levels of participation and reflexive practices are needed. This dissertation discusses the missing links between innovation research conducted in the context of industrial management, arts, and culture; applied drama and theatre practices (specifically post-Boalian approaches); and learning – especially organising reflection – in organisational settings. This dissertation (1) explores and extends the role of research-based theatre to organising reflection and reflexive practices in the context of practice-based innovation, (2) develops a reflexive model of RBT for investigating and developing practice-based organisational process innovations in order to contribute to the development of a tool for innovation management and analysis, and (3) operationalises this model within private- and publicsector organisations. The proposed novel reflexive model of research-based theatre for investigating and developing practice-based organisational process innovations extends existing methods and offers a different way of organising reflection and reflexive practices in the context of general innovation management. The model was developed through five participatory action research processes conducted in four different organisations. The results provide learning steps – a reflection path – for understanding complex organisational life, people, and relations amid renewal and change actions. The proposed model provides a new approach to organising and cultivating reflexivity in practice-based innovation activities via research-based theatre. The results can be utilised as a guideline when processing practice-based innovation within private or public organisations. The model helps innovation managers to construct, together with their employees, temporary communities where they can learn together through reflecting on their own and each others’ experiences and to break down assumptions related to their own perspectives. The results include recommendations for practical development steps applicable in various organisations with regard to (i) application of research-based theatre and (ii) related general innovation management. The dissertation thus contributes to the development of novel learning approaches in knowledge production. Tulta tekemiseen – Mikä liike-elämän seminaarissa motivoi? Case: Nordic Business Forum 2012

Muuttuvassa työelämässä suoriutuminen vaatii yksilöltä jatkuvaa itsensä kehittämistä ja ammatillista pätevöitymistä. Erinäisten koulutusten ja seminaarien rooli niihin osallistuvien yksilöiden työmotivaation lisäämisessä ja energian uudelleensuuntaamisessa voi olla merkittävä. Aidolla tunne- ja motivaatiotäyttymyksen tilalla onkin keskeinen rooli niin yksilön itsensä kuin organisaatioiden menestyksessä. Tämän tutkimuksen lähtökohtana on kysymys siitä, mikä liike-elämän seminaarin työmotivaatioon sidottu lisäarvo on. Tutkimuksen tavoitteena on lisätä ymmärrystä liike-elämän seminaarista kokonaisuutena ja siitä, mikä siellä mahdollisesti motivoi ja innostaa. Tutkimuksessa kuvataan liike-elämän seminaarin motivoivaa vaikutusta tarkastelemalla case-organisaation järjestämän seminaarin aikana koettuja työmotivaatiota lisääviä tekijöitä. Tämä tutkimus on toimeksianto Nordic Business Forum Oy:ltä. Päätutkimusongelma on asetettu kysymyksen muotoon seuraavasti: ”Mikä vuoden 2012 Nordic Business Forum -seminaarissa motivoi?” Tämä tutkimus on luonteeltaan laadullinen case-tutkimus, jossa pyritään kuvailevaan tutkimusotteeseen. Tutkimuksessa keskitytään yksittäiseen tapaukseen ja sitä kuvataan laadullisen tutkimusaineiston pohjalta. Tutkimuksen aineisto koostuu kuudesta, case-organisaation, vuoden 2012 seminaariosallistujan teemahaastattelusta. Aineistoa pyritään jäsentelemään teemoittelua käyttäen ja analysoimaan teoriasidonnaisesti. Tämän tutkimuksen perusteella voidaan tapauksena olevan liike-elämän seminaarin tyypilliseksi osallistujaksi määritellä jatkuvasta itsensä- ja ammattitaitonsa kehittämisestä motivoituvaksi, kokeneeksi ja korkeasti koulutetuksi asiantuntijaksi. Liike-elämän seminaarin motivoiva vaikutus nähdään rakentuvan verkostoitumisen, uuden oppimisen ja kehittymisen, innostavan ja inspiroivan ilmapiirin sekä seminaaripuheenvuorojen kokonaisuuksista. Tapahtumana liike-elämän seminaari motivoi tarjotessaan osallistujille mahdollisuuden muodostaa uusia verkostoja, saavuttaa uutta tietoa ja päivittää osaamista oivaltavan oppimisen kautta. Aktiivinen ajatusten vaihto ja mahdollisuus yhteisölliseen innovointiin sekä uusien ajatus- ja käyttäytymismallien jäsentäminen omaan toimintaan luovat osallistujissa uutta innostusta omaa työssä suoriutumista kohtaan. Yleisenä johtopäätöksenä voidaan lisäksi todeta seminaariosallistujan proaktiivisen luonteen ja vastuun olevan tärkein edellytys seminaarin aikana saadun, uuden innostuksen ja työmotivaation omaan toimintaan juurruttamisessa.

Les pratiques communicationnelles dans la communication médiée : l’étude de cas d’un fil de discussion sur un forum diasporique

La communication médiée attire l’attention des chercheurs en linguistique et en communication depuis quelque temps. L’utilisation des dispositifs de communication procurés par l’internet est devenue courante, et de nouvelles pratiques communicationnelles naissent sans cesse. Les nouvelles technologies sont aussi étroitement liées aux expériences migratoires contemporaines. Cette étude s’intéresse aux échanges ayant lieu sur un forum de discussion diasporique destiné aux Marocains du monde. Le corpus est constitué des échantillons extraits d’un fil de discussion, où les participants sont invités à partager leurs citations préférées avec les autres. Le but de l’analyse est de voir comment les individus interagissent dans ce fil et de comprendre quels types d’interaction contribuent à sa longévité. Dans l’analyse, il y a, au total, 3 400 messages pris en compte qui se répartissent sur une durée de huit ans. L’observation longitudinale menée sur ce fil permet de suivre l’évolution du fil de discussion dans le temps. Les langues autorisées ne sont pas précisées dans le fil. Dans les interactions, le français est la langue qui domine. L’originalité du fil réside dans le fait qu’il ne correspond pas, à première vue, à une nécessité pragmatique qui caractérise souvent les sujets thématiques des sites diasporiques. Il s’avère que les citations suscitent énormément de discussion : les dispositifs de communication médiée semblent favoriser les interactions. En plus d’être un espace où l’on publie des citations, l’espace devient également un lieu où les passionnés se renseignent au sujet des citations. D’autres s’en servent pour échanger des nouvelles, et par moments, les discussions s’égarent de manière considérable par rapport au sujet thématique initial. Cependant, tout au long du fil, la majorité des échanges reste centrée sur les citations. Les participants ont des visions divergentes concernant les échanges appropriés dans le fil, mais le souci de cohérence et le respect thématique sont partagés. La cohérence est garantie, entre autres, par la réorientation des propos des intéressés lorsqu’ils s’égarent du sujet thématique et par la gestion des langues utilisées dans les échanges.
