Turbokoneet ja etenkin höyryturbiinit ovat usein suunniteltu ja optimoitu toimimaan tietyssä toimintapisteessä jossa häviöt on minimoitu ja hyötysuhde maksimoitu. Joissakin tapauksissa on kuitenkin tarpeellista käyttää turbiinia toimintapisteen ulkopuolella. Tällöin turbiinin läpi virtaava massavirta muuttuu ja yleensä heikentää hyötysuhdetta. Turbokoneiden suorituskykyä voidaan parantaa käyttämällä kolmidimensionaalisesti muotoiltuja siipiä. Työssä on vertailtu laskennallisesti kahta kohtuullisesti muotoiltua suutinta (Compound lean ja Controlled flow) niiden suunnitellun toimintapisteen ulkopuolella. Kolmas suutin, ilman kolmidimensionaalista muotoilua on mukana vertailukohteena.

The CO2-laser-MAG hybrid welding process has been shown to be a productive choice for the welding industry, being used in e.g. the shipbuilding, pipe and beam manufacturing, and automotive industries. It provides an opportunity to increase the productivity of welding of joints containing air gaps compared with autogenous laser beam welding, with associated reductions in distortion and marked increases in welding speeds and penetration in comparison with both arc and autogenous laser welding. The literature study indicated that the phenomena of laser hybrid welding are mostly being studied using bead-on-plate welding or zero air gap configurations. This study shows it very clearly that the CO2 laser-MAG hybrid welding process is completely different, when there is a groove with an air gap. As in case of industrial use it is excepted that welding is performed for non-zero grooves, this study is of great importance for industrial applications. The results of this study indicate that by using a 6 kW CO2 laser-MAG hybrid welding process, the welding speed may also be increased if an air gap is present in the joint. Experimental trials indicated that the welding speed may be increased by 30-82% when compared with bead-on-plate welding, or welding of a joint with no air gap i.e. a joint prepared as optimum for autogenous laser welding. This study demonstrates very clearly, that the separation of the different processes, as well as the relative configurations of the processes (arc leading or trailing) affect welding performance significantly. These matters influence the droplet size and therefore the metal transfer mode, which in turn determined the resulting weld quality and the ability to bridge air gaps. Welding in bead-onplate mode, or of an I butt joint containing no air gap joint is facilitated by using a leading torch. This is due to the preheating effect of the arc, which increases the absorptivity of the work piece to the laser beam, enabling greater penetration and the use of higher welding speeds. With an air gap present, air gap bridging is more effectively achieved by using a trailing torch because of the lower arc power needed, the wider arc, and the movement of droplets predominantly towards the joint edges. The experiments showed, that the mode of metal transfer has a marked effect on gap bridgeability. Transfer of a single droplet per arc pulse may not be desirable if an air gap is present, because most of the droplets are directed towards the middle of the joint where no base material is present. In such cases, undercut is observed. Pulsed globular and rotational metal transfer modes enable molten metal to also be transferred to the joint edges, and are therefore superior metal transfer modes when bridging air gaps. It was also found very obvious, that process separation is an important factor in gap bridgeability. If process separation is too large, the resulting weld often exhibits sagging, or no weld may be formed at all as a result of the reduced interaction between the component processes. In contrast, if the processes are too close to one another, the processing region contains excess molten metal that may create difficulties for the keyhole to remain open. When the distance is optimised - i.e. a separation of 0-4 mm in this study, depending on the welding speed and beam-arc configuration - the processes act together, creating beneficial synergistic effects. The optimum process separation when using a trailing torch was found to be shorter (0-2 mm) than when a leading torch is used (2-4 mm); a result of the facilitation of weld pool motion when the latter configuration is adopted. This study demonstrates, that the MAG process used has a strong effect on the CO2-laser-MAG hybrid welding process. The laser beam welding component is relatively stable and easy to manage, with only two principal processing parameters (power and welding speed) needing to be adjusted. In contrast, the MAG process has a large number of processing parameters to optimise, all of which play an important role in the interaction between the laser beam and the arc. The parameters used for traditional MAG welding are often not optimal in achieving the most appropriate mode of metal transfer, and weld quality in laser hybrid welding, and must be optimised if the full range of benefits provided by hybrid welding are to be realised.

Adsorption is one of the most commonly used methods in water treatment processes. It is attractive due to it easy operation and the availability of a wide variety of commercial adsorbents. This doctoral thesis focuses on investigating and explaining the influence of external phase conditions (temperature, pH, ionic strength, acidity, presence of cosolutes) on adsorption phenomena. In order to cover a wide range of factors and phenomena, case studies were chosen from various fields where adsorption is applied. These include the adsorptive removal of surface active agents (used in cleaning chemicals, for example) from aqueous effluents, the removal of hormones (estradiol) from drinking water, and the adsorption of antibiotics onto silica. The latter can beused to predict the diffusion of antibiotics in the aquatic system if they are released into the environment. Also the adsorption of living cells on functionalized polymers to purify infected water streams was studied. In addition to these examples, the adsorptive separation of harmful compounds from internal water streams within a chemical process was investigated. The model system was removal of fermentation inhibitors from lignocelluloses hydrolyzates. The detoxification of the fermentation broth is an important step in the manufacture of bioethanol from wood, but has not been studied previously in connection with concentrated acid hydrolyzates. New knowledge on adsorption phenomena was generated for all of the applications investigated. In most cases, the results could be explained by combining classical theories for individual phenomena. As an example, it was demonstrated how liquid phase aggregation could explain abnormal-looking adsorption equilibrium data. In addition to the fundamental phenomena, also process performance was of interest. This aspect is often neglected in adsorption studies. It was demonstrated that adsorbents should not be selected for a target application based on their adsorption properties only, but regeneration of the spent adsorbent must be considered. It was found that using a suitable amount of organic co-solvent in the regeneration can significantly improve the productivity of the process.

The wars the Western armies are involved with today are different from those that were fought in the end of 20th century. To explain this change, the Western military thinkers have come up with various different types of definitions of warfare over the last 30 years, each describing the tendencies involved in the conflicts of the time. The changing nature of conflicts surfaced a new term – hybrid warfare. The term was to describe and explain the multi-modality and complexity of modern day conflict. This thesis seeks the answer for the question: what is the development of thought behind hybrid warfare? In this thesis the Vietnam War (1965-1975) is used as an example of compound warfare focusing on the American involvement in the war. The Second Lebanon War (2006) serves as an example of hybrid warfare. Both case studies include an irregular opposing force, namely National Liberation Front in Vietnam War and Hezbollah in the Second Lebanon War. These two case studies are compared with the term full spectrum operations introduced in the current U.S. Department of Army Field Manual No. 3-0 Operations to see the differences and similarities of each term. The perspective of this thesis is the American point of view. This thesis concludes that hybrid warfare, compound warfare and full spectrum operations are very similar. The first two terms are included in the last one. Although hybrid warfare is not officially defined, it will most likely remain to be used in the discussion in the future, since hybrid wars and hybrid threats are officially accepted terms.

The understanding and engineering of bismuth (Bi) containing semiconductor surfaces are signi cant in the development of novel semiconductor materials for electronic and optoelectronic devices such as high-e ciency solar cells, lasers and light emitting diodes. For example, a Bi surface layer can be used as a surfactant which oats on a III-V compound-semiconductor surface during the epitaxial growth of IIIV lms. This Bi surfactant layer improves the lm-growth conditions if compared to the growth without the Bi layer. Therefore, detailed knowledge of the properties of the Bi/III-V surfaces is needed. In this thesis, well-de ned surface layers containing Bi have been produced on various III-V semiconductor substrates. The properties of these Bi-induced surfaces have been measured by low-energy electron di raction (LEED), scanning-tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy (STM), and synchrotron-radiation photoelectron spectroscopy. The experimental results have been compared with theoretically calculated results to resolve the atomic structures of the studied surfaces. The main ndings of this research concern the determination of the properties of an unusual Bi-containing (2×1) surface structure, the discovery and characterization of a uniform pattern of Bi nanolines, and the optimization of the preparation conditions for this Bi-nanoline pattern.

Tämän tutkimuksen kohde on suomen kirjoitetun yleiskielen morfosyntaktisten yhdyssanarakenteiden produktiivisuus. Tutkimuksen tärkein päämäärä on selvittää, kuinka ahkerasti erilaisia suomen kielen suomia mahdollisuuksia käytetään uusien yhdyssanojen muodostuksessa. Käytännöllistä produktiivisuutta kartoittava tutkimus täydentää kielioppien ja sanastonkuvausten antamaa kuvaa kielestä. Tutkimuksen kohteena oleva kielimuoto on kaikille kielenkäyttäjille yhteinen kirjoitettu yleiskieli. Tutkimusaineisto koostuu 28 091 uudesta yhdyssanasta, jotka on kerätty painetun median kielestä vuosina 2000–2009. Aineiston pohjana on Kotimaisten kielten keskuksen Nykysuomen sanastotietokanta, johon poimitaan uusia ja uudella tavalla käytettyjä sanoja ensisijaisesti sanakirjatyön ja kielenhuollon tarpeisiin. Tutkimusaihetta lähestytään useiden yhdyssanan osien muotoa, sanaluokkaa, määrää ja pituutta koskevien alakysymysten kautta. Tutkimus etenee yksittäisten muut-tujien käsittelystä muuttujien keskinäisiä suhteita tarkasteleviin malleihin. Tutkimuksessa käytetään kaksivaiheista metodia: Metodin ensimmäinen askel on uudessa sanastossa havaittujen rakenteiden tyyppifrekvenssin tilastollinen analyysi. Toinen askel on varsinkin matalafrekvenssisten tai tilastollisessa analyysissa muuten poikkeavaksi osoittautuneiden rakenteiden kvalitatiivinen tarkastelu. Metodi on kehitetty tätä tutkimusta varten, sillä aiemmin produktiivisuuden mittaamisessa käytetyt menetelmät eivät sellaisenaan sovi suomen kielen yhdyssanarakenteiden tutkimukseen. Tutkimusmetodien kehittäminen on tutkimuksen keskeinen tavoite. Tutkimus on luonteeltaan kielen rakennetta kartoittavaa perustutkimusta. Tutkimustulosten tärkeimmät sovellusalat ovat kieliteknologia ja sananmuodostuksen opetus. Tutkimus avaa useita näkökulmia jatkotutkimukselle.

This thesis examines the interdependence of macroeconomic variables, stock market returns and stock market volatility in Latin America between 2000 and 2015. Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico and Peru were chosen as the sample markets, while inflation, interest rate, exchange rate, money supply, oil and gold were chosen as the sample macroeconomic variables. Bivariate VAR (1) model was applied to examine the mean return spillovers between the variables, whereas GARCH (1, 1) – BEKK model was applied to capture the volatility spillovers. The sample was divided into two smaller sub-periods, where the first sub-period covers from 2000 to 2007, and the second sub-period covers from 2007 to 2015. The empirical results report significant shock transmissions and volatility spillovers between inflation, interest rate, exchange rate, money supply, gold, oil and the selected markets, which suggests interdependence between the variables.
