Bumblebees are a very essential group of pollinating insects, but their populations have declined drastically during the past decades. We need to understand why their numbers are decreasing and what can be done to reverse this trend. Climate change-related phenomena, such as changes in the overwintering temperatures and spring conditions, are among the most prominent threats to bumblebees. Queens have a special role in the lifecycle of bumblebees because they overwinter and start new colonies the next year. Their successful performance: survival, overwintering ability, longevity, immune competence, and nest establishing capability in spring, is highly important for bumblebee populations. However, the effects of climate change on bumblebee queen performance remain unknown. The main objective of this thesis was to assess how temperature affects the performance of bumblebee queens during and after overwintering. The effects of warm temperature predicted by climate change scenarios on queen survival and stress-tolerance were studied by a four-month artificial diapause of bumblebee queens at two temperatures (9°C and 1.8°C). Bumblebee colonies were also reared in a laboratory and factors affecting colony characteristics were examined. In addition, queen performance during spring was studied in a starvation experiment using two temperatures (15°C as normal; 24°C as warmer than average) and queens collected from nature right after their emergence. My research revealed how temperature affects queen performance, and queen size was found to be an important factor determining the direction of some of these effects. We found a 0.4g weight threshold for bumblebee queens to be able to survive overwintering. In addition, during mild winters, larger queens have a higher chance than smaller ones to survive through winter and also to cope with immunological stresses after overwintering. During cold conditions, which are normal in the current climatic situation, this advantage disappears. In the spring starvation experiment, the starved queens survived approximately eight days longer in 15°C than in 24°C, which means that starvation risk rises significantly with increasing spring temperature, in a situation where food is scarce due to for example frost damage or asynchrony between bumblebees and their important food plants. These results could mean that in the future climate, larger queens are better able to survive the winter, initiate their nests and start rearing their offspring. This may be problematic, because I also detected two alternative strategies of colony development that differ between large and small queens; larger queens start to lay eggs earlier at nest initiation, their colonies mature later, they produce more workers, and they have a more strongly male biased sex allocation compared with smaller queens. If larger queens have a greater change of producing offspring after a mild winter, this could lead to a significant decline in the total production of new queens at a population level. Thus, it seems that queen size could act as one mechanism regulating the population level outcomes in different temperatures. The new information presented in my thesis reinforces that basic research, monitoring, and local species conservation of bumblebees both in Finland and globally must be increased to ensure that this highly important pollinator group survives in the face of climate change.

Any other technology has never affected daily life at this level and witnessed as speedy adaptation as the mobile phone. At the same time, mobile media has developed to be a serious marketing tool for all kinds of businesses, and the industry has grown explosively in recent years. The objective of this thesis is to inspect the mobile marketing process of an international event. This thesis is a qualitative case study. The chosen case for this thesis is the mobile marketing process of Falun2015 FIS Nordic World Ski Championships due to researcher’s interest on the topic and contacts to the people around the event. The empirical findings were acquired by conducting two interviews with three experts from the case organisation and its partner organisation. The interviews were performed as semi-structured interviews utilising the themes arising from the chosen theoretical framework. The framework distinguished six phases in the process: (i) campaign initiation, (ii) campaign design, (iii) campaign creation, (iv) permission management, (v) delivery, and (vi) evaluation and analysis. Phases one and five were not examined in this thesis because campaign initiation was not purely seen as part of the campaign implementation, and investigating phase five would have required a very technical viewpoint to the study. In addition to the interviews, some pre-established documents were exploited as a supporting data. The empirical findings of this thesis mainly follow the theoretical framework utilised. However, some modifications to the model could be made mainly related to the order of different phases. In the revised model, the actions are categorised depending on the time they should be conducted, i.e. before, during or after the event. Regardless of the categorisation, the phases can be in different order and overlapping. In addition, the business network was highly emphasised by the empirical findings and is thus added to the modified model. Five managerial recommendations can be concluded from the empirical findings of this thesis: (i) the importance of a business network should be highly valued in a mobile marketing process; (ii) clear goals should be defined for mobile marketing actions in order to make sure that everyone involved is aware them; (iii) interactivity should be perceived as part of a mobile marketing communication; (iv) enough time should be allowed for the development of a mobile marketing process in order to exploit all the potential it can offer; and (v) attention should be paid to measuring and analysing matters that are of relevance

Testaustapausten valitseminen on testauksessa tärkeää, koska kaikkia testaustapauksia ei voida testata aika- ja raharajoitteiden takia. Testaustapausten valintaan on paljon eri menetelmiä joista eniten esillä olevat ovat malleihin perustuva valinta, kombinaatiovalinta ja riskeihin perustuva valinta. Kaikkiin edellä mainittuihin menetelmiin testaustapaukset luodaan ohjelman spesifikaation perusteella. Malleihin perustuvassa menetelmässä käytetään hyväksi ohjelman toiminnasta olevia malleja, joista valitaan tärkeimmät testattavaksi. Kombinaatiotestauksessa testitapaukset on muodostettu ominaisuuspareina jolloin yhden parin testaamisesta päätellään kahden ominaisuuden toiminta. Kaikissa menetelmissä priorisointi on tärkeässä roolissa, jotta testauksesta saadaan riittävä luotettavuus ilman kustannusten nousua.

It has been shown in organizational settings that trust is a crucial factor in different kinds of outcomes, and consequently, building employee trust in the employer is a goal for all kinds of organizations. Although it is recognized that trust in organizations operates on multiple levels, at present there is no clear consensus on the concept of trust within the organization. One can have trust in particular people (i.e. interpersonal trust) or in organized systems (i.e. impersonal trust). Until recently organizational trust has been treated mainly as an interpersonal phenomenon. However, the interpersonal approach is limited. Scholars studying organizational trust have thus far focused only on specific dimensions of impersonal trust, and none have taken a comprehensive approach. The first objective in this study was to develop a construct and a scale encompassing the impersonal element of organizational trust. The second objective was to examine the effects of various HRM practices on the impersonal dimensions of organizational trust. Moreover, although the “black box” model of HRM is widely studied, there have been only a few attempts to unlock the box. Previous studies on the HRM-performance link refer to trust, and this work contributes to the literature in considering trust an impersonal issue in the relationship between HRM, trust, and performance. The third objective was thus to clarify the role of impersonal trust in the relationship between HRM and performance. The study is divided into two parts comprising the Introduction and four separate publications. Each publication addresses a distinct sub-question, whereas the Introduction discusses the overall results in the light of the individual sub-questions. The study makes two major contributions to the research on trust. Firstly, it offers a framework describing the construct of impersonal trust, which to date has not been clearly articulated in the research on organizational trust. Secondly, a comprehensive, psychometrically sound, operationally valid scale for measuring impersonal trust was developed. In addition, the study makes an empirical contribution to the research on strategic HRM. First, it shows that HRM practices affect impersonal trust and the contribution is to consider the HRM-trust link in terms of impersonal organizational trust. It is shown that each of the six HRM practices in focus is connected to impersonal trust. A further contribution lies in unlocking the black box. The study explores the impersonal element of organizational trust and its mediating role between HRM practices and performance. The result is the identification of the path by which HRM contributes to performance through the mediator of impersonal trust. It is shown that the effect on performance of HRM designed specifically to enhance employees’ impersonal trust in the organization is positive.

Due to the necessity of achieving greater interoperability among the European Union (EU) Member States’ public services, the European Interoperability Framework (EIF) was created. This framework provides guidelines to projects towards cross-border interoperability of EU Member States. One of such projects is the e-CODEX. The purpose of this thesis is, therefore, to assess how useful the EIF is, how e-CODEX stands in compliance to the EIF and ultimately answer whether the e-CODEX should fulfill its intended purpose or not. To answer these questions, I divided the research in two distinct sections: the first one compares the EIF against the American initiative towards interoperability, the Federal Enterprise Architecture (FEA); and the second one assesses to what extent the e-CODEX follows the EIF and to what extent the EIF covers e-CODEX’s needs in the form of a questionnaire sent to experts in e-CODEX’s Member States. By the conclusion, I summarize the findings in each section, derive some new findings by combining the previous ones, and finally suggest some recommendations and a topic for future research.

There are more than 7000 languages in the world, and many of these have emerged through linguistic divergence. While questions related to the drivers of linguistic diversity have been studied before, including studies with quantitative methods, there is no consensus as to which factors drive linguistic divergence, and how. In the thesis, I have studied linguistic divergence with a multidisciplinary approach, applying the framework and quantitative methods of evolutionary biology to language data. With quantitative methods, large datasets may be analyzed objectively, while approaches from evolutionary biology make it possible to revisit old questions (related to, for example, the shape of the phylogeny) with new methods, and adopt novel perspectives to pose novel questions. My chief focus was on the effects exerted on the speakers of a language by environmental and cultural factors. My approach was thus an ecological one, in the sense that I was interested in how the local environment affects humans and whether this human-environment connection plays a possible role in the divergence process. I studied this question in relation to the Uralic language family and to the dialects of Finnish, thus covering two different levels of divergence. However, as the Uralic languages have not previously been studied using quantitative phylogenetic methods, nor have population genetic methods been previously applied to any dialect data, I first evaluated the applicability of these biological methods to language data. I found the biological methodology to be applicable to language data, as my results were rather similar to traditional views as to both the shape of the Uralic phylogeny and the division of Finnish dialects. I also found environmental conditions, or changes in them, to be plausible inducers of linguistic divergence: whether in the first steps in the divergence process, i.e. dialect divergence, or on a large scale with the entire language family. My findings concerning Finnish dialects led me to conclude that the functional connection between linguistic divergence and environmental conditions may arise through human cultural adaptation to varying environmental conditions. This is also one possible explanation on the scale of the Uralic language family as a whole. The results of the thesis bring insights on several different issues in both a local and a global context. First, they shed light on the emergence of the Finnish dialects. If the approach used in the thesis is applied to the dialects of other languages, broader generalizations may be drawn as to the inducers of linguistic divergence. This again brings us closer to understanding the global patterns of linguistic diversity. Secondly, the quantitative phylogeny of the Uralic languages, with estimated times of language divergences, yields another hypothesis as to the shape and age of the language family tree. In addition, the Uralic languages can now be added to the growing list of language families studied with quantitative methods. This will allow broader inferences as to global patterns of language evolution, and more language families can be included in constructing the tree of the world’s languages. Studying history through language, however, is only one way to illuminate the human past. Therefore, thirdly, the findings of the thesis, when combined with studies of other language families, and those for example in genetics and archaeology, bring us again closer to an understanding of human history.

This thesis studies gray-level distance transforms, particularly the Distance Transform on Curved Space (DTOCS). The transform is produced by calculating distances on a gray-level surface. The DTOCS is improved by definingmore accurate local distances, and developing a faster transformation algorithm. The Optimal DTOCS enhances the locally Euclidean Weighted DTOCS (WDTOCS) with local distance coefficients, which minimize the maximum error from the Euclideandistance in the image plane, and produce more accurate global distance values.Convergence properties of the traditional mask operation, or sequential localtransformation, and the ordered propagation approach are analyzed, and compared to the new efficient priority pixel queue algorithm. The Route DTOCS algorithmdeveloped in this work can be used to find and visualize shortest routes between two points, or two point sets, along a varying height surface. In a digital image, there can be several paths sharing the same minimal length, and the Route DTOCS visualizes them all. A single optimal path can be extracted from the route set using a simple backtracking algorithm. A new extension of the priority pixel queue algorithm produces the nearest neighbor transform, or Voronoi or Dirichlet tessellation, simultaneously with the distance map. The transformation divides the image into regions so that each pixel belongs to the region surrounding the reference point, which is nearest according to the distance definition used. Applications and application ideas for the DTOCS and its extensions are presented, including obstacle avoidance, image compression and surface roughness evaluation.

Hamstring muscle injuries and tendon disorders are common, especially in sports. They can be severe and difficult to treat, often resulting in impaired athletic performance and long rehabilitation times. Previous studies considering treatment of these problems are scarce. The current study was designed to investigate the effect of surgery on different types of hamstring muscle injuries and on proximal hamstring tendinopathy. In addition, we wanted to study the typical histopathological findings relating to proximal hamstring tendinopathy. In the study of complete (all three muscles torn) proximal hamstring avulsions (41 patients), our results showed that early operative treatment gives significantly better results than late surgery, and is therefore recommended. Despite this, considerable improvement of symptoms could also be achieved in chronic cases. In the study of partial (one or two muscles torn) proximal hamstring tears (47 patients), we observed that these injuries can cause significant functional deficit and impaired performance in athletes. The main finding was that after surgical repair most of the patients were able to return to their pre-injury level of sports. In the study of distal hamstring tears (18 patients), the results showed that surgical treatment had a good effect in the majority of these cases. In proximal hamstring tendinopathy, the main problem is pain which limits sports. In this study (90 patients), we found that after unsuccessful conservative treatment, surgery was a good treatment option resulting in full return to sports in most cases. In tendinopathic hamstring tendons, the morphological changes of tendinosis were largely identical to those previously described in other common (e.g. Achilles and patellar) tendinopathies. In chronic proximal hamstring avulsions, and also in reoperations, a large defect between distally retracted tendons and the ischial tuberosity may occasionally prevent anatomic reinsertion. We have described a reconstruction method using fascia lata autograft augmentation to be used in these most challenging repairs. This technique was utilized in the treatment of five patients, with encouraging results.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) infections in mothers are important to consider since pregnancy may affect the outcome of the infection and the mother may transmit HPV to the child. This thesis is part of the 3-year Finnish Family HPV Study on HPV infection dynamics within 329 families. The presence of maternal HPV antibodies and HPV DNA in placenta, umbilical cord blood and breast milk was examined. In addition, genital and oral HR-HPV carriage was studied among mothers with one or two pregnancies. At enrollment, seropositivity to HPV 6, 11, 16, 18 and 45 was recorded in 53 %, 21 %, 35 %, 21 % and 9 % of the mothers, respectively. Age at sexual debut, number of sexual partners, a history of genital warts and antibodies to LR/HR-HPV predicted HR/LR-HPV-seropositivity. During follow-up 27 %, 14 %, 17 %, 17 % and 7 % of the mothers seroconverted to the tested HPV-types, respectively. Decay of HPV-antibodies was rare. The mother’s new pregnancy was of minor impact in the outcome of oral and cervical HR-HPV infections. HPV-DNA was present in 4.2 % and 3.5 % of the placentas and umbilical cord blood samples, and in 4.5 % and 19.7 % of the breast milk samples collected at day 3 and month 2 postpartum, respectively. HPV-positivity in placenta/cord blood was related to a history of abnormal pap-smears or genital warts, and raised the risk of the neonate being HPV-positive at birth. The mode of delivery did not predict the HPVstatus of neonate, placenta, or cord blood. HPV DNA in breast milk was associated with oral HPV status of the father, but not with HPV status of the neonate. The results indicate that exposure to HPV is common and that part of the exposure might take place already early in life. Contrary to the common claim, pregnancy is not a risk factor for HPV.

Positron emission tomography (PET) studies on healthy individuals have revealed a marked interindividual variability in striatal dopamine D2 receptor density that can be partly accounted for by genetic factors. The examination of the extrastriatal lowdensity D2 receptor populations has been impeded by the lack of suitable tracers. However, the quantification of these D2 receptor populations is now feasible with recently developed PET radioligands. The objective of this thesis was to study brain neurobiological correlates of common functional genetic variants residing in candidate genes relevant for D2 receptor functioning. For this purpose, healthy subjects were studied with PET imaging using [11C]raclopride and [11C]FLB457 as radioligands. The candidate genes examined in this work were the human D2 receptor gene (<i>DRD2i>) and the catechol-Omethyltransferase gene (<i>COMTi>). The region-specific genotypic influences were explored by comparing D2 receptor binding properties in the striatum, the cortex and the thalamus. As an additional study objective, the relationship between cortical D2 receptor density and a cognitive phenotype i.e. verbal memory and learning was assessed. The main finding of this study was that <i>DRD2i> C957T genotype altered markedly D2 receptor density in the cortex and the thalamus whereas in the striatum the C957T genotype affected D2 receptor affinity, but not density. Furthermore, the A1 allele of the <i>DRD2i>-related TaqIA polymorphism showed increased cortical and thalamic D2 receptor density, but had the opposite effect on striatal D2 receptor density. The <i>DRD2i> –141C Ins/Del or the <i>COMTi> Val158Met genotypes did not change D2 receptor binding properties. Finally, unlike previously reported, cortical D2 receptor density did not show any significant correlation with verbal memory function. The results of this study suggest that the C957T and the TaqIA genotypes have region-specific neurobiological correlates in brain dopamine D2 receptor availability <i>in vivoi>. The biological mechanisms underlying these findings are unclear, but they may be related to the region-specific regulation of dopamine neurotranssion, gene/receptor expression and epigenesis. These findings contribute to the understanding of the genetic regulation of dopamine and D2 receptor-related brain functions <i>in vivoi> in man. In addition, the results provide potentially useful endophenotypes for genetic research on psychiatric and neurological disorders.

Keskeisin lähde Levinasin tuotannossa on <i>Otherwise than Being or Beyond Essencei>. Myös teokset <i>Totality and Infinityi> ja, juutalaisuuden osalta, <i>Difficult Freedomi> ovat useiden tulkintojen pohjalla.
