Blazar research offers a view to one of the most energetic physical processes known to man. The high-energy end of blazar emission has been probed by the Fermi satellite mission since 2008, and it has catalogued more than a thousand gamma- ray bright blazars. However, a large fraction of these sources have no spectroscopic classification at lower energies. In this thesis, optical spectra for sixteen Fermi blazar candidates are published. The optical spectroscopic data have been observed with the Nordic Optical Telescope on the island of La Palma, Spain, during the summer of 2015. The ALFOSC instrument was used, with exposure times from 800 to 3000 seconds per target, yielding signal- to-noise ratios from 10 to 38. All of the sixteen targets show a flat, featureless optical spectrum, characteristic to BL Lacertae objects. The spectra of two targets contain faint emission features, and faint absorption features are seen in three targets. However, none of the features could be reliably identified. Therefore all of the targets are classified as BL Lacertae objects. This classification is supported by the statistical distribution of Fermi -selected active galactic nuclei; more than half of the identified Fermi AGN are BL Lacs. However, the classification of this sample could be improved further with a new observing campaign. This is especially true for the objects with uncertain spectral features.

In this dissertation, Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) and their host galaxies are discussed. Together with transitional events, such as supernovae and gamma-ray bursts, AGN are the most energetic phenomena in the Universe. The dominant fraction of their luminosity originates from the center of a galaxy, where accreting gas falls into a supermassive black hole, converting gravitational energy to radiation. AGN have a wide range of observed properties: e.g. in their emission lines, radio emission, and variability. Most likely, these properties depend significantly on their orientation to our line-of-sight, and to unify AGN into physical classes it is crucial to observe their orientation-independent properties, such as the host galaxies. Furthermore, host galaxy studies are essential to understand the formation and co-evolution of galactic bulges and supermassive black holes. In this thesis, the main focus is on observationally characterizing AGN host galaxies using optical and near-infrared imaging and spectroscopy. BL Lac objects are a class of AGN characterized by rapidly variable and polarized continuum emission across the electromagnetic spectrum, and coredominated radio emission. The near-infrared properties of intermediate redshift BL Lac host galaxies are studied in Paper I. They are found to be large elliptical galaxies that are more luminous than their low redshift counterparts suggesting a strong luminosity evolution, and a contribution from a recent star formation episode. To analyze the stellar content of galaxies in more detail multicolor data, especially observations at blue wavelengths, are essential. In Paper III, optical - near-infrared colors and color gradients are derived for low redshift BL Lac host galaxies. They show bluer colors and steeper color gradients than inactive ellipticals which, most likely, are caused by a relatively young stellar population indicating a different evolutionary stage between AGN hosts and inactive ellipticals. In Paper II, near-infrared imaging of intermediate redshift radio-quiet quasar hosts is used to study their luminosity evolution. The hosts are large elliptical galaxies, but they are systematically fainter than the hosts of radio-loud quasars at similar redshifts, suggesting a link between the luminosity of the host galaxies and the radio properties of AGN. In Paper IV, the characteristics of near-infrared stellar absorption features of low redshift radio galaxies are compared with those of inactive early-type galaxies. The comparison suggests that early-type galaxies with AGN are in a different evolutionary stage than their inactive counterparts. Moreover, radio galaxies are found to contain stellar populations containing both old and intermediate age components.

Context: BL Lacs are the most numerous extragalactic objects which are detected in Very High Energy (VHE) gamma-rays band. They are a subclass of blazars. Large flux variability amplitude, sometimes happens in very short time scale, is a common characteristic of them. Significant optical polarization is another main characteristics of BL Lacs. BL Lacs' spectra have a continuous and featureless Spectral Energy Distribution (SED) which have two peaks. Among 1442 BL Lacs in the Roma-BZB catalogue, only 51 are detected in VHE gamma-rays band. BL Lacs are most numerous (more than 50% of 514 objects) objects among the sources that are detected above 10 GeV by FERMI-LAT. Therefore, many BL Lacs are expected to be discovered in VHE gamma-rays band. However, due to the limitation on current and near future technology of Imaging Air Cherenkov Telescope, astronomers are forced to predict whether an object emits VHE gamma-rays or not. Some VHE gamma-ray prediction methods are already introduced but still are not confirmed. Cross band correlations are the building blocks of introducing VHE gamma-rays prediction method. Aims: We will attempt to investigate cross band correlations between flux energy density, luminosity and spectral index of the sample. Also, we will check whether recently discovered MAGIC J2001+435 is a typical BL Lac. Methods: We select a sample of 42 TeV BL Lacs and collect 20 of their properties within five energy bands from literature and Tuorla blazar monitoring program database. All of the data are synchronized to be comparable to each other. Finally, we choose 55 pair of datasets for cross band correlations finding and investigating whether there is any correlation between each pair. For MAGIC J2001+435 we analyze the publicly available SWIFT-XRT data, and use the still unpublished VHE gamma-rays data from MAGIC collaboration. The results are compared to the other sources of the sample. Results: Low state luminosity of multiple detected VHE gamma-rays is strongly correlated luminosities in all other bands. However, the high state does not show such strong correlations. VHE gamma-rays single detected sources have similar behaviour to the low state of multiple detected ones. Finally, MAGIC J2001+435 is a typical TeV BL Lac. However, for some of the properties this source is located at the edge of the whole sample (e.g. in terms of X-rays flux). Tutkimuksen tavoitteena oli selvittää erilaisten puutuotteiden kakkoslaatujen syntyä ja niiden aiheuttamaa negatiivista tulosvaikutusta. Lisätavoitteena oli kootapuutuotteiden kakkoslaaduille toimintasuunnitelma, jonka avulla yritys voisi vähentää kakkoslaatujen syntyä sekä pienentää niiden aiheuttamaa tappiota. Yrityksen puutuotteista tutkimukseen kohteina olivat viilut, vaneritja sahatavarajalosteet. Nykytilan selvittämiseksi kerättiin tietoa yrityksen tietojärjestelmistä ja haastattelemalla useita henkilöitä eri yksiköistä. Tutkimukseen haastateltiin henkilöitä myynti-, tuotanto-, sekä kehitysosastoilta. Tietoja analysoimalla etsittiin keinoja toiminnan tehostamiseksi ja yhtenäistämiseksi yksiköiden välillä. Tutkimuksen tuloksena syntyi toimenpide-ehdotuksia ja toimintasuunnitelmia. Tulosten mukaan eri yksiköille sopivat hieman erilaiset toimintamallit. Sahatavarajalosteiden osalta merkittävimpänä keinonaolisi panostettava sopivamman raaka-aineen hankintaan kakkosten välttämiseksi. Vaneriteollisuudessa merkittävimpiä tekijöitä ovat tuotannon sitominen kakkostentehokkaampaan hyödyntämiseen, sekä myynnin ohjeistaminen joustavampiin toimitusmääriin. Viiluteollisuudessa olisi etsittävä uusia käyttökohteita alemman laadunviilulle, jonka raaka-ainetta jää nyt tuotantolaitoksilla hyödyntämättä.

Työssä tarkastellaan oppimisalustoilla käytettäviä testikysymyksiä ja oppisisältöjä uudelleen-käytettävyyden ja siirrettävyyden näkökulmasta. Tavoitteena on selvittää, minkälaisia välineitä määrämuotoisten sisältöjen tuottamista varten on olemassa, ja miten niillä luodut materiaalit ovat siirrettävissä työvälineestä toiseen ja oppimisalustoille. Tutkittavana ovat sisällön paketointiin tarkoitetutSCORM- ja IMS Content Packaging -spesifikaatiot sekä kysymysten esittämiseen tarkoitettu IMS Question and Test Interoperability -spesifikaatio. Pääpaino työssäon selvittää, miten oppisisällöt ovat siirrettävissä WebCT- ja Moodle-alustojenvälillä. Tähän liittyen on luotu ohjeistus, miten yksittäiset tiedostot, kysymykset ja Sisältökokonaisuus-työkalulla koostetut sisällöt siirretään WebCT:ltä Moodleen.

Values and value processes are said to be needed in every organization nowadays, as the world is changing and companies have to have something to "keep it together". Organizational values, which are approvedand used by the personnel, could be the key. Every organization has values. But what is the real value of values? The greatest and most crucial challenge is the feasibility of the value process. The main point in this thesis is tostudy how organizational members at different hierarchical levels perceive values and value processes in their organizations. This includes themes such as how values are disseminated, the targets of value processing, factors that affect the process, problems that occur during the value implementation and improvements that could be made when organizational values are implemented. These subjects are studied from the perspective of organizational members (both managers and employees); individuals in the organizations. The aim is to get the insider-perspective on value processing, from multiple hierarchical levels. In this research I study three different organizations (forest industry, bank and retail cooperative) and their value processes. The data is gathered from companies interviewing personnel in the head office and at the local level. The individuals areseen as members of organizations, and the cultural aspect is topical throughout the whole study. Values and cultures are seen as the 'actuality of reality' of organizations, interpreted by organizational members. The three case companies were chosen because they represented different lines of business and they all implemented value processing differently. Sincethe emphasis in this study is at the local level, the similar size of the local units was also an important factor. Values are in 'fashion' -but what does the fashion tell us about the real corporate practices? In annual reports companies emphasize the importance and power of official values. But what is the real 'point' of values? Values are publicly respected and advertised, but still it seems that the words do not meet the deeds. There is a clear conflict between theoretical, official and substantive organizational values: in the value processing from words to real action. This contradiction in value processing is studied through individual perceptions in this study. I study the kinds of perceptions organizationalmembers have when values are processed from the head office to the local level: the official value process is studied from the individual's perspective. Value management has been studied more during the 1990's. The emphasis has usually been on managers: how they consider the values in organizations and what effects it has on the management. Recent literature has emphasized values as tools for improving company performance. The value implementation as a process has been studied through 'good' and 'bad' examples, as if one successful value process could be copied to all organizations. Each company is different with different cultures and personnel, so no all-powerful way of processing values exists. In this study, the organizational members' perceptions at different hierarchical levels are emphasized. Still, managers are also interviewed; this is done since managerial roles in value dissemination are crucial. Organizational values cannot be well disseminated without management; this has been proved in several earlier studies (e.g. Kunda 1992, Martin 1992, Parker 2000). Recent literature has not sufficiently emphasized the individual's (organizational member's) role in value processing. Organizations consist of differentindividuals with personal values, at all hierarchical levels. The aim in this study is to let the individual take the floor. Very often the value process is described starting from the value definition and ending at dissemination, and the real results are left without attention. I wish to contribute to this area. Values are published officially in annual reports etc. as a 'goal' just like profits. Still, the results/implementationof value processing is rarely followed, at least in official reports. This is a very interesting point: why do companies espouse values, if there is no real control or feedback after the processing? In this study, the personnel in three different companies is asked to give an answer. In the empirical findings, there are several results which bring new aspects to the research area of organizational values. The targets of value processing, factors effecting value processing, the management's roles and the problems in value implementation are presented through the individual's perspective. The individual's perceptions in value processing are a recurring theme throughout the whole study. A comparison between the three companies with diverse value processes makes the research complete
