Contextuality in SME Ownership – Studies on Owner-managers’ Ownership Behavior

The purpose of this study is to deepen the understanding of the meaning of ownership in the context of small and medium sized businesses. The research on ownership has increased and widened during the last few years. Ownership is treated increasingly as a psychological phenomenon and it has been noticed that it is common for SME ownermanagers to be mentally linked to their firms. Previous research is suggesting that the central role of an owner-manager in an SME is specifying the concept of SMEs, and that ownership is creating a great heterogeneity within SMEs. This study suggests that there is a variation whitin ownership behaviour of small business owners, and the variation is not totally random or irrational, but following the general patterns of business ownership and of doing business on an SME level. This study is a concept analytical in nature and it builds on the theoretical clarification of the concept of ownership. The theoretical consideration concludes with proposing a definition of ownership: Ownership means a subject’s relatively sustaining position of control in regard to an object. The empirical part of this study consists of five articles, out of which one is conceptual and four are empirical in nature. The notion of contextuality of ownership and the notions of SME characteristics form the basic premise of this study and the theoretical basis for the publications. From the owner-managers point of view, ownership relates the owner also to his or her environment and therefore also to the valuations of the owner-managers. This means that all the dimensions are not equally valued, but certain dimensions in his or her ownership are more important. The presented empirical research is supporting the claim that there is a variation whitin ownership behaviour of small business owners. When bringing the definition of ownership onto a personal and psychological level and into the SME context, it was noticed that ownership is not only a closed system phenomenon occurring between the owner and object owned, but it is also elementarily connected to the environment. Ownership - along with the psychological side of it - is a contextual phenomenon where the fundamental factor is the relatively sustaining position of control with regard to an object. As a contribution of the study, this definition is bringing a new point of view to the discussion on SMEs, SME strategic behaviour and family businesses. The study concludes with pointing out directions for future research.

Targeting Adenoviral Gene Therapy Vectors to Head and Neck Squamous Cell Carcinoma and Heart

Gene therapy aims to treat diseases by introducing genetic material to the diseased tissue. For cancer treatment it is important to destroy cancerous cells; this can be achieved by introducing a gene, which induces cell death or by allowing viral vectors to replicate, which also results in destruction of cancerous cells. For cardiac diseases the approach is more like the former, except the gene produces beneficial effects, like angiogenesis. Adenoviruses have many beneficial qualities, which make the virus an interesting gene therapy vector; it can be produced relatively easily, its manipulation is quite easy and it has naturally broad tropism. By removing or replacing certain genes in the adenoviral genome, it can be made non-replicative. In this study, adenoviral receptor expression patterns were characterized in both head and neck squamous cell carcinoma and the human heart. Adenovirus serotype 5 receptor expression in head and neck cancer cell lines was found to be highly variable between cell lines and overall at lower levels, while Ad35 receptor expression was more uniform and at higher levels in all analyzed cell lines. It was also shown that a hybrid virus Ad5/35 is able to infect cells refractory to Ad5, which correlates with receptor expression in these cells. Furthermore, this difference in infection properties extends to cell killing efficiency in case of conditionally replicative viruses. Expression levels of adenoviral receptors CAR, CD46, CD86 and αv-integrins were found to be high both in normal and dilated cardiomyopathy heart tissue. The receptor levels also correlate with transduction efficiency after intracardiac injection. Ad5 showed superior transduction ability compared with Ad5/35, but evoked also a more profound immune reaction when administered this way. Adenoviral gene therapy vectors are the most used delivery vehicles in clinical trials to date. These vectors have proven to be well tolerated and positive results have been obtained when combined with traditional treatments, although poor transduction efficiency has often been reported due to low-level expression of viral receptors on target cells. In spite of this, the results are encouraging and merit for further research.

Kempeleentien (mt 816) ja Piriläntien (mt 8154) toimenpidesuunnitelma

Kempeleentien ja Piriläntien toimenpidesuunnitelma on laadittu, koska maankäyttö on muuttunut ja on muuttumassa edelleen merkittävästi teiden varsilla. Kempeleentiestä on olemassa vanha yleissuunnitelma, jonka esitykset haluttiin tarkistaa. Piriläntien osalta aiempaa, tulevaan maankäyttöön soveltuvaa suunnitelmaa ei ollut. Suunnitelma on laadittu Pohjois-Pohjanmaan ELY-keskuksen ja Kempeleen kunnan yhteistyönä. Suunnitelma on tehty samaan aikaan Kempeleen liikenneturvallisuussuunnitelman laatimisen kanssa. Suunnittelussa on hyödynnetty samoja lähtöaineistoja ja vuoropuhelu on käyty samanaikasesti. Suunnitelmaluonnoksia on esitelty asukkaille ja valtuutetuille syksyllä 2013. Toimenpidesuunnitelmassa on keskitytty liittymien sekä jalankulun ja pyöräilyn sujuvuuden ja liikenneturvallisuuden parantamiseen. Kempeleentien osalta liittymät säilyvät nykypaikoillaan. Piriläntiellä liittymät muuttuvat maankäytön toteutumisen mukana. Kempeleen ydinalueen liikenteen kehittymiseen ja liikennevirtoihin vaikuttaa merkittävästi uuden radan poikkiyhteyden toteutuminen Asemanseudun pohjoispuolelle. Mahdollinen Zatelliitin eritasoliittymän toteutuminen moottoritielle siirtää liikennettä Ketolanperantieltä uudelle poikkiyhteydelle, ja muutos vaikuttaa myös Kempeleentien liikenteeseen jonkin verran. Kempeleentien vilkkaimpiin liittymiin esitetään liikennevalo-ohjausta. Liikennevalot voidaan rakentaa ensimmäisessä vaiheessa nykyliittymiin ja toisessa vaiheessa rakennetaan tarvittavat lisäkaistat. Muihin liittymiin tehdään pieniä muutoksia. Piriläntiellä liittymät eivät tarvitse merkittäviä kaistajärjestelyjä, mutta sijainnit muuttuvat. Piriläntien ja Eteläsuomentien liittymään rakennetaan liikennevalo-ohjaus kesällä 2014. Jalankulku- ja pyöräteitä rakennetaan lisää varsinkin uuden maankäytön myötä. Taajaman länsiosaan muodostuu pohjois-etelä- ja itä-länsisuuntaisia yhteyksiä. Yksi tärkeimmistä on uuden radan poikkiyhteyden myötä syntyvä reitti Kokkokankaalta ydinkeskustaan ja edelleen Kirkonkylän koulukeskukseen. Joukkoliikenteen toimintaedellytyksiä pyritään parantamaan pysäkkijärjestelyillä. Esitetyillä toimenpiteillä parannetaan liikenneturvallisuutta ja liikenteen sujuvuutta. Muutokset mahdollistavat maankäytön kehittämisen. Toimenpide-esitysten alustava kustannusarvio on noin 1,7 miljoonaa euroa. Toimenpiteille on esitetty ohjeellinen kiireellisyysjärjestys.
