Design and implementation of FPGA-based LQ control of active magnetic bearings

The need for high performance, high precision, and energy saving in rotating machinery demands an alternative solution to traditional bearings. Because of the contactless operation principle, the rotating machines employing active magnetic bearings (AMBs) provide many advantages over the traditional ones. The advantages such as contamination-free operation, low maintenance costs, high rotational speeds, low parasitic losses, programmable stiffness and damping, and vibration insulation come at expense of high cost, and complex technical solution. All these properties make the use of AMBs appropriate primarily for specific and highly demanding applications. High performance and high precision control requires model-based control methods and accurate models of the flexible rotor. In turn, complex models lead to high-order controllers and feature considerable computational burden. Fortunately, in the last few years the advancements in signal processing devices provide new perspective on the real-time control of AMBs. The design and the real-time digital implementation of the high-order LQ controllers, which focus on fast execution times, are the subjects of this work. In particular, the control design and implementation in the field programmable gate array (FPGA) circuits are investigated. The optimal design is guided by the physical constraints of the system for selecting the optimal weighting matrices. The plant model is complemented by augmenting appropriate disturbance models. The compensation of the force-field nonlinearities is proposed for decreasing the uncertainty of the actuator. A disturbance-observer-based unbalance compensation for canceling the magnetic force vibrations or vibrations in the measured positions is presented. The theoretical studies are verified by the practical experiments utilizing a custom-built laboratory test rig. The test rig uses a prototyping control platform developed in the scope of this work. To sum up, the work makes a step in the direction of an embedded single-chip FPGA-based controller of AMBs.

Viestinnän kokoelma tukee sekä viestintää pääaineenaan perustutkintoa suorittavia opiskelijoita sekä jatko-opintoja ja tieteellistä tutkimusta. Systemaattisen satunnaisotannan perusteella vajaa 40% nimekkeistä on tieteellistä kirjallisuutta. Hieman pienempi osa voidaa luokitella yleistajuiseksi kirjallisuudeksi. Runsas neljännes kokoelmasta on joko suoraan oppikirjoiksi kirjoitettuja tai sellaisina pidettäviä. Kokoelma on luotu oppiaineen perustamisesta alkaen 1968. Alkuaan kokoelman nimenä oli Hv Tiedotusoppi. Sitä ennen tieteenalan kirjallisuutta oli kirjaston muiden tieteenalojen kokoelmissa. Kokoelman painopiste on joukkoviestinnässä ja organisaatioviestinnässä. Runsaasti edustettuina ovat myös media, journalismi, työyhteisöjen viestintä, organisaatiokulttuurit sekä verkkoviestintä ja populaarikulttuuri (etenkin elokuva). Kuvailussa on otettu otettu huomioon vain vain hyllyluokassa Hv Viestintä olevat monografiat eli sarjakokoelmissa oleva aineisto, lehdet sekä elektroniset aineistot ovat arvioinnissa jätetty pois. Kokoelmaan kuuluu 2846 nimikettä. Kokoelman nimekkeiden mediaani on 1988. Kirjoista 1782 (46%) on julkaistu vuonna 1990 tai sen jälkeen. Julkaisuvuosien mediaani on 1988. Reilut nimekkeistä puolet eli 58% prosenttia on englanninkielisiä. Suomeksi julkaistuja on 834 (29%) ja ruotsiksi 204 (7%). Kokoelman teoksista 508 eli 18% on ilmestynyt vuonna 2000-2008. 1990-luvulla ilmestyneiden osuus on 789 eli 28% ja 1980-luvulla ilmestyneitä on 1014 eli 36%. Alle viidennes eli 18% on julkaistu ennen vuotta 1980. Kokoelman kartuntaan voi saattaa vaikuttaa se, että viestinnän laitoksella on oma laitoskirjastonsa, jonne hankitaan tutkijoiden ja opettajien tarvitsemaa kirjallisuutta.

Stock Repurchase Authorizations - Finnish Companies

The aim of this study is to examine the abnormal market reaction caused by share repurchase authorizations. We study this abnormal reaction from five different angles. First four concentrate on average abnormal returns while the fifth concentrates on cumulative abnormal return. Data consists of 508 share repurchase authorization from Finnish stock market. Event study methodology is used to examine the stock price reaction and regression analysis is used to find correlation between actual buybacks and abnormal returns. The empirical results show that markets do usually react positively to share repurchase authorizations. There are some differences depending which of the five angles the abnormal returns are being examined. Statistically we can confirm that some authorization give positive reaction while others do not. Also we didn’t find a statistically significant positive correlation between actual buybacks and abnormal returns.
