Tässä työssä arvioidaan kotitalouksien energiansäästöpotentiaalia valaistuksen osalta Suomessa. Euroopan Unioni on ratifioinut päästövähennystavoitteen 20 % koskien kaikkia primäärienergiantuotantomuotoja. Päästövähennystavoite on tarkoitus toteuttaa vuoteen 2020 mennessä. Tässä kandidaatintyössä arvioidaan saavutettavissa olevaa energiansäästöpotentiaalia Suomessa kotitalouksissa laitesähkön osalta. Energiansäästöpotentiaalin arviointi perustuu hehkulampun korvaamismahdollisuuksien vertailuun. Valaistuksessa voidaan saavuttaa jopa 75 % sähkönsäästö, kun korvataan yksi 60 W hehkulamppu vastaavan valomäärän tuottavalla energiansäästölampulla. Kokonaisuudessa kotitalouksien valaistuksessa on tehostamispotentiaalia noin 60 %. Valaistuksen tehostamisella saavutetaan noin 1,5 TWh säästö Suomen kokonaissähkökulutuksessa. Saavutettavat säästöt voivat olla jopa suuremmatkin, jos käytetään lisäksi älykästä valonohjausta. Johtopäätöksenä voidaan todeta, että tehostamispotentiaalia on merkittävästi ja tehostaminen on yksittäiselle kotitaloudelle taloudellisesti kannattavaa. Energiansäästöpotentiaalin toteuttamisen vaikutuksia kansantalouteen ei ole arvioitu.

International energy and climate strategies also set Finland’s commitments to increasing the use of renewable energy sources and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The target can be achieved by, for example, increasing the use of energy wood. Finland’s forest biomass potential is significant compared with current use. Increased use will change forest management and wood harvesting methods however. The thesis examined the potential for integrated pulp and paper mills to increase bioenergy production. The effects of two bioenergy production technologies on the carbon footprint of an integrated LWC mill were studied at mill level and from the cradle-to-customer approach. The LignoBoost process and FT diesel production were chosen as bioenergy cases. The data for the LignoBoost process were obtained from Metso and for the FT diesel process from Neste Oil. The rest of the information is based on the literature and databases of the KCL-ECO life-cycle computer program and Ecoinvent. In both case studies, the carbon footprint was reduced. From the results, it can be concluded that it is possible to achieve a fossil-fuel-free pulp mill with the LignoBoost process. By using steam from the FT diesel process, the amount of auxiliary fuel can be reduced considerably and the bark boiler can be replaced. With a choice of auxiliary fuels for use in heat production in the paper mill and the production methods for purchased electricity, it is possible to affect the carbon footprints even more in both cases.

Tämä työ käsittelee eri tapoja, joilla biomassasta voidaan valmistaa metanolia. Työssä käydään läpi eri valmistusreitit sekä tarkastellaan biomassaa raaka-aineena. Työhön on myös koottu joidenkin maailmalla tehtyjen tutkimusten aine- ja energiataseita. Tutkimusten pohjalta mietitään onko metanolin tuotanto liikennepolttoaineeksi tällä hetkellä taloudellisesti tai energiatehokkuudeltaan järkevää. Metanolia voidaan valmistaa biomassasta pääsääntöisesti viidellä eri tavalla. Ensimmäinen tapa on kaasuttaa biomassaa, jolloin tuotetaan raaka-kaasua. Raaka-kaasusta jalostetaan synteesikaasua, josta voidaan metanolisynteesillä valmistaa metanolia. Toinen tapa metanolin valmistamiseksi on liittää tuotanto sellunkeiton yhteyteen. Tällöin raaka-aineena olisi selluprosessissa syntyvä mustalipeä, josta metanoli voidaan erottaa. Kolmas mahdollinen valmistusprosessi on biomassan mädätys. Mädätyksessä syntyy biokaasua, josta jalostetaan synteesikaasuaja siitä edelleen metanolia. Neljäs keino metanolin valmistamiseksi biomassasta on pyrolyysi. Puun pyrolyysissä puu kuumennetaan nopeasti hapettomissa tai rajallisen hapensaannin olosuhteissa. Prosessissa syntyvästä pyrolyysiöljystä voidaan erottaa metanolia tislaamalla. Viides mahdollinen reitti metanolin valmistukselle on Fischer¬–Tropsch-synteesi. Biomassasta saatu synteesikaasu johdetaan FT-synteesiin, jossa katalyyttisesti saadaan hiilivetyjen ohella tuotettua metanolia. Biopolttoaineiden kuten metanolin valmistusprosesseja tutkitaan ja kehitetään jatkuvasti, sillä uusiutumattomat energianlähteet eivät riitä loputtomasti ja niiden aiheuttamia hiilidioksidipäästöjä halutaan vähentää. Tällä hetkellä tuotantoteknologiat eivät ole vielä tarpeeksi kehittyneet, jotta tuotanto saataisiin vastaamaan kulutusta. Metanolia ei kuitenkaan vielä voida käyttää sellaisenaan liikennepolttoaineena, joten metanolin markkinat ainakin vielä ovat sillä saralla varsin kapeat.

Euroopan unionin asettamat tavoitteet kasvihuonepäästöjen vähennykselle johtavat vih-reämpään teknologiaan. Tämä diplomityö on teoreettinen tutkimus, joka käsittelee biopolt-toaineen rinnakkaispolton kannattavuutta Vantaan Energian Martinlaakso 2:sen hiilipöly-polttokattilassa. Työssä perehdytään viiteen eri biopolttoainevaihtoehtoon, joita tarkastellaan viidessä eri skenaariossa, jotka vastaavat: 10, 20, 30, 40 ja 50 % biopolttoaineen osuutta kattilassa tuo-tetusta energiasta. Skenaarioissa on pohdittu tarvittavia investointikustannuksia ja muutos-töitä hiilipölypolttokattilassa. Tutkimuksessa on huomioitu myös uusi isojen laitosten pääs-töjä koskeva direktiivi, kattilan oletettava käyttöikä sekä biopolttoaineiden tuet. Saaduista arvioista on lopuksi laskettu vuosittainen polttoainekohtainen kustannusarvio ja investoin-nin kannattavuusarvio. Tuloksista voidaan päätellä, että sahanpurun mahdollisimman suuri hyötykäyttö on kannat-tavaa. Mikäli halutaan käyttää suuria määriä biopolttoainetta, (yli 20 % tuotetusta energias-ta) ei sahanpuru ole varteenotettava vaihtoehto huonon saatavuutensa johdosta. Tällöin hakkeen kaasutuslaitos olisi paras ratkaisu, mutta laitoksen kannattavuus riippuu tulevista energiatuista. Ilman energiatukia sahanpurun hyötykäyttö on ainoa kannattava investointi.

More discussion is required on how and which types of biomass should be used to achieve a significant reduction in the carbon load released into the atmosphere in the short term. The energy sector is one of the largest greenhouse gas (GHG) emitters and thus its role in climate change mitigation is important. Replacing fossil fuels with biomass has been a simple way to reduce carbon emissions because the carbon bonded to biomass is considered as carbon neutral. With this in mind, this thesis has the following objectives: (1) to study the significance of the different GHG emission sources related to energy production from peat and biomass, (2) to explore opportunities to develop more climate friendly biomass energy options and (3) to discuss the importance of biogenic emissions of biomass systems. The discussion on biogenic carbon and other GHG emissions comprises four case studies of which two consider peat utilization, one forest biomass and one cultivated biomasses. Various different biomass types (peat, pine logs and forest residues, palm oil, rapeseed oil and jatropha oil) are used as examples to demonstrate the importance of biogenic carbon to life cycle GHG emissions. The biogenic carbon emissions of biomass are defined as the difference in the carbon stock between the utilization and the non-utilization scenarios of biomass. Forestry-drained peatlands were studied by using the high emission values of the peatland types in question to discuss the emission reduction potential of the peatlands. The results are presented in terms of global warming potential (GWP) values. Based on the results, the climate impact of the peat production can be reduced by selecting high-emission-level peatlands for peat production. The comparison of the two different types of forest biomass in integrated ethanol production in pulp mill shows that the type of forest biomass impacts the biogenic carbon emissions of biofuel production. The assessment of cultivated biomasses demonstrates that several selections made in the production chain significantly affect the GHG emissions of biofuels. The emissions caused by biofuel can exceed the emissions from fossil-based fuels in the short term if biomass is in part consumed in the process itself and does not end up in the final product. Including biogenic carbon and other land use carbon emissions into the carbon footprint calculations of biofuel reveals the importance of the time frame and of the efficiency of biomass carbon content utilization. As regards the climate impact of biomass energy use, the net impact on carbon stocks (in organic matter of soils and biomass), compared to the impact of the replaced energy source, is the key issue. Promoting renewable biomass regardless of biogenic GHG emissions can increase GHG emissions in the short term and also possibly in the long term.

Tämän diplomityön tarkoituksena on selvittää alueellisen lämmön- ja sähköntuotannon laskentamenetelmävalintojen vaikutuksia kasvihuonekaasupäästöihin. Työn tutkimuskysymyksenä on, onko mahdollista, että laskentamenetelmän valinnalla on suurempi vaikutus alueen kasvihuonekaasupäästöihin kuin energiantuotantotekniikan valinnalla. Laskentamenetelmävalinnoista tutkitaan tarkemmin CHP-laitoksen päästöjen allokointitavan ja sähkönpäästöjen määrittämisen vaikutuksia kasvihuonekaasupäästöihin. Tutkimusmenetelminä työssä on käytetty kirjallisuuskatsausta sekä tapaustutkimusta. Kirjallisuuskatsauksen aineistona käytetään tieteellisiä artikkeleita ja tutkimusraportteja. Tapaustutkimuksessa tutkitaan yksittäistä case-kohdetta, joka on Tampereen Härmälänrannan uudisrakennusalue, ja jossa vertaillaan maalämpöpumppua ja kaukolämpöä alueen lämmitysratkaisuina. Työn tuloksena todetaan, että on olemassa sellaisia tilanteita, joissa laskentamenetelmän valinnalla on suurempi vaikutus alueen kasvihuonekaasupäästöihin kuin energiantuotantotekniikan valinnalla. Lisäksi case-tarkastelun perusteella huomataan, että laskentamenetelmävalinnoilla on sitä suurempi merkitys, mitä enemmän CHP-laitoksessa käytetään uusiutuvaa polttoainetta. Työn johtopäätöksenä voidaan todeta, että energiantuotannon kasvihuonekaasupäästölaskennassa on syytä ymmärtää ja huomioida eri laskentamenetelmävalintojen vaikutus esitettyihin tuloksiin.

Cement industry significantly associated with high greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Considering the environmental impact, particularly global warming potential, it is important to reduce these emissions to air. The aim of the study is to investigate the mitigation possibility of GHG emissions in Ethiopian cement industry. Life cycle assessment (LCA) method used to identify and quantify GHG emissions during one ton of ordinary portland cement (OPC) production. Three mitigation scenarios: alternative fuel use, clinker substitution and thermal energy efficiency were applied on a representative gate-to-gate flow model developed with GaBi 6 software. The results of the study indicate that clinker substitution and alternative fuel use play a great role for GHG emissions mitigation with affordable cost. Applying most energy efficient kiln technology, which in turn reduces the amount of thermal energy use, has the least GHG emissions reduction intensity and high implementation cost comparing to the other scenarios. It was found that the cumulative GHG emissions mitigation potential along with other selected mitigation scenarios can be at least 48.9% per ton of cement production.

This doctoral dissertation explores the contribution of environmental management practices, the so-called clean development mechanism (CDM) projects, and foreign direct investment (FDI) in achieving sustainable development in developing countries, particularly in Sub- Saharan Africa. Because the climate change caused by greenhouse gas emissions is one of the most serious global environmental challenges, the main focus is on the causal links between carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, energy consumption, and economic development in Sub-Saharan Africa. In addition, the dissertation investigates the factors that have affected the distribution of CDM projects in developing countries and the relationships between FDI and other macroeconomic variables of interest. The main contribution of the dissertation is empirical. One of the publications uses crosssectional data and Tobit and Poisson regressions. Three of the studies use time-series data and vector autoregressive and vector error correction models, while two publications use panel data and panel data estimation methods. One of the publications uses thus both timeseries and panel data. The concept of Granger causality is utilized in four of the publications. The results indicate that there are significant differences in the Granger causality relationships between CO2 emissions, energy consumption, economic growth, and FDI in different countries. It appears also that the causality relationships change over time. Furthermore, the results support the environmental Kuznets curve hypothesis but only for some of the countries. As to CDM activities, past emission levels, institutional quality, and the size of the host country appear to be among the significant determinants of the distribution of CDM projects. FDI and exports are also found to be significant determinants of economic growth.

The reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in the European Union promotes the combustion of biomass rather than fossil fuels in energy production. Circulating fluidized bed (CFB) combustion offers a simple, flexible and efficient way to utilize untreated biomass in a large scale. CFB furnaces are modeled in order to understand their operation better and to help in the design of new furnaces. Therefore, physically accurate models are needed to describe the heavily coupled multiphase flow, reactions and heat transfer inside the furnace. This thesis presents a new model for the fuel flow inside the CFB furnace, which acknowledges the physical properties of the fuel and the multiphase flow phenomena inside the furnace. This model is applied with special interest in the firing of untreated biomass. An experimental method is utilized to characterize gas-fuel drag force relations. This characteristic drag force approach is developed into a gas-fuel drag force model suitable for irregular, non-spherical biomass particles and applied together with the new fuel flow model in the modeling of a large-scale CFB furnace. The model results are physically valid and achieve very good correspondence with the measurement results from large-scale CFB furnace firing biomass. With the methods and models presented in this work, the fuel flow field inside a circulating fluidized bed furnace can be modeled with better accuracy and more efficiently than in previous studies with a three-dimensional holistic model frame.

Diplomityön tavoitteena on selvittää sinfoniaorkesterin toiminnan merkittävimmät kasvihuonekaasupäästölähteet sekä kuinka kasvihuonekaasupäästöjä voidaan vähentää ja/tai kompensoida niin, että voidaan saavuttaa hiilineutraalius. Tavoitteena on myös tutkia sinfoniaorkesterin vaikutusmahdollisuudet sen sidosryhmiin. Tuloksia tarkastellaan myös globaalissa mittakaavassa, jolloin nähdään millainen vaikutus sinfoniaorkestereiden hiilineutraaliudella olisi ilmastonmuutoksen hillinnässä. Diplomityössä esitetään ensin hiilijalanjälkilaskentaa ja musiikkiteollisuutta yleisesti, jonka jälkeen selvitetään case-tutkimuksena Sinfonia Lahden hiilijalanjälki. Hiilijalanjälkilaskenta perustuu Sinfonia Lahden antamiin tietoihin, minkä lisäksi hyödynnetään diplomityön yhteydessä tehtyjen kyselyjen tuloksia. Kyselyjen tarkoituksena on selvittää sekä Sinfonia Lahden henkilöstön että yleisön matkustustottumuksia. Sinfonia Lahden henkilöstölle järjestettiin myös workshop, jossa tutustuttiin tarkemmin ilmastonmuutokseen. Hiilineutraalius saavutetaan selvittämällä toiminnasta aiheutuvat kasvihuonekaasupäästöt. Tämän jälkeen toimintaa muutetaan vähäpäästöisemmäksi ja lopuksi jäljelle jäävät kasvihuonekaasupäästöt kompensoidaan. Vaikka Sinfonia Lahden merkittävimmät kasvihuonekaasupäästölähteet ovat liikenne sekä energiankulutus, päästövähennyksiä tulee tehdä pysyvästi kaikista mahdollisista toiminnoista. Erityisen tärkeää on saada sidosryhmät osallistumaan sinfoniaorkesterin asettamiin vähennystavoitteisiin. Kompensoinnilla on merkittävä rooli hiilineutraaliuden saavuttamisessa. Tällä hetkellä maailman sinfoniaorkesterit eivät aktiivisesti pyri hiilineutraaliin toimintaan.

In recent years the environmental issues and the energy saving have become increasingly import in modern society where industry is the major emission factor and energy consumer. Generally, most of the total energy consumption is caused by electrical drives used in industrial applications and thus improving the performance of electrical drives give an opportunity to improve the energy efficiency. In this Master Thesis improving the energy efficiency in different electrical drives is clarified with different cases: regenerative braking in the electric grid or recovery of the braking energy into an energy storage. In addition, as an example, the energy consumption of an elevator is analyzed by measurements. From these measurement results it can be estimated how much the share of the standby energy consumption is from the total energy consumption and how much regenerative energy is available. The latter part of the thesis concentrates on determination of the properties of lithium iron phosphate battery with measurements.

The electricity distribution sector will face significant changes in the future. Increasing reliability demands will call for major network investments. At the same time, electricity end-use is undergoing profound changes. The changes include future energy technologies and other advances in the field. New technologies such as microgeneration and electric vehicles will have different kinds of impacts on electricity distribution network loads. In addition, smart metering provides more accurate electricity consumption data and opportunities to develop sophisticated load modelling and forecasting approaches. Thus, there are both demands and opportunities to develop a new type of long-term forecasting methodology for electricity distribution. The work concentrates on the technical and economic perspectives of electricity distribution. The doctoral dissertation proposes a methodology to forecast electricity consumption in the distribution networks. The forecasting process consists of a spatial analysis, clustering, end-use modelling, scenarios and simulation methods, and the load forecasts are based on the application of automatic meter reading (AMR) data. The developed long-term forecasting process produces power-based load forecasts. By applying these results, it is possible to forecast the impacts of changes on electrical energy in the network, and further, on the distribution system operator’s revenue. These results are applicable to distribution network and business planning. This doctoral dissertation includes a case study, which tests the forecasting process in practice. For the case study, the most prominent future energy technologies are chosen, and their impacts on the electrical energy and power on the network are analysed. The most relevant topics related to changes in the operating environment, namely energy efficiency, microgeneration, electric vehicles, energy storages and demand response, are discussed in more detail. The study shows that changes in electricity end-use may have radical impacts both on electrical energy and power in the distribution networks and on the distribution revenue. These changes will probably pose challenges for distribution system operators. The study suggests solutions for the distribution system operators on how they can prepare for the changing conditions. It is concluded that a new type of load forecasting methodology is needed, because the previous methods are no longer able to produce adequate forecasts.

This thesis reviews the role of nuclear and conventional power plants in the future energy system. The review is done by utilizing freely accesible publications in addition to generating load duration and ramping curves for Nordic energy system. As the aim of the future energy system is to reduce GHG-emissions and avoid further global warming, the need for flexible power generation increases with the increased share of intermittent renewables. The goal of this thesis is to offer extensive understanding of possibilities and restrictions that nuclear power and conventional power plants have regarding flexible and sustainable generation. As a conclusion, nuclear power is the only technology that is able to provide large scale GHG-free power output variations with good ramping values. Most of the currently operating plants are able to take part in load following as the requirement to do so is already required to be included in the plant design. Load duration and ramping curves produced prove that nuclear power is able to cover most of the annual generation variation and ramping needs in the Nordic energy system. From the conventional power generation methods, only biomass combustion can be considered GHG-free because biomass is considered carbon neutral. CFB combusted biomass has good load follow capabilities in good ramping and turndown ratios. All the other conventional power generation technologies generate GHG-emissions and therefore the use of these technologies should be reduced.

Nowadays the Finnish-Russian electric energy interaction is carried out through the back-to-back DC Vyborg substation and several power plants working synchronously with Finnish power system. Constant amount of energy flows in one direction — from Russia to Finland. But the process of electricity market development in Russian energy system makes the new possibilities of electrical cooperation available. The goal of master's thesis is to analyze the current state and possible evolution trends of North-West Russian system in relation with future possible change in power flow between Russia and Finland. The research is done by modelling the market of North-West Russia and examination of technical grid restrictions. The operational market models of North-West region of Russia for the years 2008 and 2015 were created during the research process. The description of prepared market models together with modelling results and their analysis are shown in the work. The description of power flow study process and results are also presented.

In this thesis an electric propulsion system is designed on a device level using Cadence ORCAD. The vehicle belongs to the Helsinki Metropolia University of Applied Sci-ences and it is to compete in the Automotive X-Prize competition held in the USA. In this thesis the electric propulsion system and related electric safety measures are designed. Also electro-magnetic compatibility and interferences present in the system are examined by examining the birth mechanisms and transmission paths of interference. Per device effects of interference and solutions to minimize them were examined and proposed. Suitability of permanent magnet synchronous machines for passenger vehicle use was examined by examining the torque production capability of the motor and the torque requirements of the vehicle. Also a short overview of history of electric vehicles is given.
