After the economic reform, China has undergone fast economic growth, urbanization and adopted the western lifestyle. Global enterprises are investing in China and Finnish companies began to enter the Chinese market after the 1980s. Fast economic growth has downside effects like pollution and thus more cleantech solutions are needed. There are different kinds of entry modes that companies are using when entering the Chinese market. This thesis focuses on export tire entry mode. The purpose of this study is to examine cleantech companies’ opinions about the export tire operations. The background of this study is built by combining the written knowledge about the history of the Chinese industry and market entry modes. The empirical part of the study is a semi-structured, qualitative analysis of five case companies that are operating together in a particular export tire and represent the highest Finnish cleantech knowledge. The results of this study indicate that the export tire entry is an easy and cost effective way to enter new markets or market segment. Export tire is really dependent on the leader who in this particular case succeeded well.

Innovations diffuse at different speed among the members of a social system through various communication channels. The group of early adopters can be seen as the most influential reference group for majority of people to base their innovation adoption decisions on. Thus, the early adopters can often accelerate the diffusion of innovations. The purpose of this research is to discover means of diffusion for an innovative product in Finnish market through the influential early adopters in respect to the characteristics of the case product. The purpose of the research can be achieved through the following sub objectives: Who are the potential early adopters for the case product and why? How the potential early adopters of the case product should be communicated with? What would be the expectations, preferences, and experiences of the early adopters of the case product? The case product examined in this research is a new board game called Rock Science which is considered to be incremental innovation bringing board gaming and hard rock music together in a new way. The research was conducted in two different parts using both qualitative and quantitative research methods. This mixed method research began with expert interviews of six music industry experts. The information gathered from the interviews enabled researcher to compose the questionnaire for the quantitative part of the study. Internet survey that was sent out resulted with a sample of 97 responses from the targeted population. The key findings of the study suggest that (1) the potential early adopters for the case product are more likely to be young adults from the capital city area with great interest in rock music, (2) the early adopters can be reached effectively through credible online sources of information, and (3) the respondents overall product feedback is highly positive, except in the case of quality-price ratio of the product. This research indicates that more effective diffusion of Rock Science board game in Finland can be reached through (1) strategic alliances with music industry and media partnerships, (2) pricing adjustments, (3) use of supporting game formats, and (4) innovative use of various social media channels.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic autoimmune disease of the central nervous system CNS), where inflammation and neurodegeneration lead to irreversible neuronal damage. In MS, a dysfunctional immune system causes auto‐reactive lymphocytes to migrate into CNS where they initiate an inflammatory cascade leading to focal demyelination, axonal degeneration and neuronal loss. One of the hallmarks of neuronal injury and neuroinflammation is the activation of microglia. Activated microglia are found not only in the focal inflammatory lesions, but also diffusely in the normal‐appearing white matter (NAWM), especially in progressive MS. The purine base, adenosine is a ubiquitous neuromodulator in the CNS and also participates in the regulation of inflammation. The effect of adenosine mediated via adenosine A2A receptors has been linked to microglial activation, whereas modulating A2A receptors may exert neuroprotective effects. In the majority of patients, MS presents with a relapsing disease course, later advancing to a progressive phase characterised by a worsening, irreversible disability. Disease modifying treatments can reduce the severity and progression in relapsing MS, but no efficient treatment exists for progressive MS. The aim of this research was to investigate the prevalence of adenosine A2A receptors and activated microglia in progressive MS by using in vivo positron emission tomography (PET) imaging and [11C]TMSX and [11C](R)‐PK11195 radioligands. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) was performed to evaluate structural brain damage. Non‐invasive input function methods were also developed for the analyses of [11C]TMSX PET data. Finally, histopathological correlates of [11C](R)‐PK11195 radioligand binding related to chronic MS lesions were investigated in post‐mortem samples of progressive MS brain using autoradiography and immunohistochemistry. [11C]TMSX binding to A2A receptors was increased in NAWM of secondary progressive MS (SPMS) patients when compared to healthy controls, and this correlated to more severe atrophy in MRI and white matter disintegration (reduced fractional anisotropy, FA) in DTI. The non‐invasive input function methods appeared as feasible options for brain [11C]TMSX images obviating arterial blood sampling. [11C](R)‐PK11195 uptake was increased in the NAWM of SPMS patients when compared to patients with relapsing MS and healthy controls. Higher [11C](R)‐PK11195 binding in NAWM and total perilesional area of T1 hypointense lesions was associated with more severe clinical disability, increased brain atrophy, higher lesion load and reduced FA in NAWM in the MS patients. In autoradiography, increased perilesional [11C](R)‐PK11195 uptake was associated with increased microglial activation identified using immunohistochemistry. In conclusion, brain [11C]TMSX PET imaging holds promise in the evaluation of diffuse neuroinflammation in progressive MS. Being a marker of microglial activation, [11C](R)‐ PK11195 PET imaging could possibly be used as a surrogate biomarker in the evaluation of the neuroinflammatory burden and clinical disease severity in progressive MS.

The two main objectives of Bayesian inference are to estimate parameters and states. In this thesis, we are interested in how this can be done in the framework of state-space models when there is a complete or partial lack of knowledge of the initial state of a continuous nonlinear dynamical system. In literature, similar problems have been referred to as diffuse initialization problems. This is achieved first by extending the previously developed diffuse initialization Kalman filtering techniques for discrete systems to continuous systems. The second objective is to estimate parameters using MCMC methods with a likelihood function obtained from the diffuse filtering. These methods are tried on the data collected from the 1995 Ebola outbreak in Kikwit, DRC in order to estimate the parameters of the system.

Lipid movement in cells occurs by a variety of methods. Lipids diffuse freely along the lateral plane of a membrane and can translocate between the lipid leaflets, either spontaneously or with the help of enzymes. Lipid translocation between the different cellular compartments predominantly takes place through vesicular transport. Specialized lipid transport proteins (LTPs) have also emerged as important players in lipid movement, as well as other cellular processes. In this thesis we have studied the glycolipid transport protein (GLTP), a protein that transports glycosphingolipids (GSLs). While the in vitro properties of GLTP have been well characterized, its cell biological role remains elusive. By altering GSL and GLTP levels in cells, we have extracted clues towards the protein's function. Based on the results presented in this thesis and in previous works, we hypothesize that GLTP is involved in the GSL homeostasis in cells. GLTP most likely functions as a transporter or sensor of newly synthesized glucosylceramide (GlcCer), at or near the site of GlcCer synthesis. GLTP also seems to be involved in the synthesis of globotriacylceramide, perhaps in a manner that is similar to that of the fourphosphate adaptor protein 2, another GlcCer-transporting LTP. Additionally, we have developed and studied a novel method of introducing ceramides to cells, using a solvent-free approach. Ceramides are important lipids that are implicated in several cellular functions. Their role as proapoptotic molecules is particularly evident. Ceramides form stable bilayer structures when complexed with cholesterol phosphocholine (CholPC), a large-headgroup sterol. By adding ceramide/CholPC complexes to the growth medium, various chain length ceramides were successfully delivered to cells in culture. The uptake rate was dependent on the chain length of the ceramide, where shorter lipids were internalized more quickly. The rate of uptake also determined how the cells metabolised the ceramides. Faster uptake favored conversion of ceramide to GlcCer, whereas slower delivery resulted mainly in breakdown of the lipid.

Kandidaatintutkielman tarkoituksena on tutkia Suomen asuntomarkkinoiden kehitystä kuluttajamarkkinanäkökulmasta 2000-luvulta alkaen. Tutkimuksessa selviää kaupungistumisen aiheuttaneen suuren muuttoliikenteen kaupunkien lähettyville, minne on alkanut muodostua pienempiä kaupunkikeskuksia.
