In this thesis, a computer software for defining the geometry for a centrifugal compressor impeller is designed and implemented. The project is done under the supervision of Laboratory of Fluid Dynamics in Lappeenranta University of Technology. This thesis is similar to the thesis written by Tomi Putus (2009) in which a centrifugal compressor impeller flow channel is researched and commonly used design practices are reviewed. Putus wrote a computer software which can be used to define impeller’s three-dimensional geometry based on the basic geometrical dimensions given by a preliminary design. The software designed in this thesis is almost similar but it uses a different programming language (C++) and a different way to define the shape of the impeller meridional projection.

Tässä väitöskirjassa tarkastellaan suurnopeustekniikan eri sovelluksissa ilmeneviä roottoreihin liittyviä rakenteellisia vaatimuksia ja haasteita. Tässä yhteydessä suurnopeustekniikalla tarkoitetaan järjestelyä, jossa sähkökone (moottori, generaattori) ja toimilaite (turbiini, kompressori, puhallin) on kytketty ilman vaihdetta suoraan mekaanisesti yhteen ja jossa yhteisen roottorin pyörimisnopeus on selvästi suurempi kuin 50/60 hertsin verkosta syötetyn kaksinapaisen vaihtovirtasähkökoneen tahtinopeus. Tyypillistä suurnopeuskoneen roottorille on suuri tehotiheys ja suuri mekaaninen kuormitus. Siksi esimerkiksi sähkökoneen jäähdytys on entistä haasteellisempaa kasvavien rautahäviöiden ja pienempien lämmönsiirtopinta-alojen vuoksi. Tämän työn tavoitteet voidaan jakaa kolmeen osaan:  Yhdistetyn sähkö- ja turbokoneen roottorin mekaanisen rakenteen tarkastelu, jonka tavoitteena on pienentää lämmönkehitystä ja tehostaa kriittisten kohtien jäähdytystä. Tähän liittyy sähkömagneettisten häviöiden keskittäminen jäähdytyksen kannalta edullisiin kohtiin  Yhdistetyn sähkö- ja turbokoneen roottorin mekaanisen rakenteen tarkastelu kriittisten ominaistaajuuksien kannalta  Yhdistetyn sähkö- ja turbokoneen roottorin mekaanisen rakenteen analysointi lujuustekniseltä kannalta. Tähän liittyvät mm. erilaiset ahdistussovitteet ja niiden säilyminen korkeilla pyörimisnopeuksilla sekä niiden roottoria jäykistävä vaikutus ja lämmön johtuminen kyseisissä liitospinnoissa. Tämän työn tieteellinen uutuusarvo on nimenomaan yhdistetyn sähkö- ja turbokoneen roottorin rakenteen analysointi ottamalla samanaikaisesti huomioon kaikki edellä mainitut näkökohdat: jäähtyminen erityisen kuumissa kohdissa, sähköisten häviöiden alentaminen ja niiden jakautuman huomioon ottaminen, roottorin jäykkyyden maksimointi, lujuusrasitusten hallinta ja rakenteen mekaaninen stabiliteetti sekä lämpöteknisten ylimenovastusten tarkastelu.

In this doctoral thesis, a power conversion unit for a 10 kWsolid oxide fuel cell is modeled, and a suitable control system is designed. The need for research was identified based on an observation that there was no information available about the characteristics of the solid oxide fuel cell from the perspective of power electronics and the control system, and suitable control methods had not previously been studied in the literature. In addition, because of the digital implementation of the control system, the inherent characteristics of the digital system had to be taken into account in the characteristics of the solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC). The characteristics of the solid oxide fuel cell as well the methods for the modeling and control of the DC/DC converter and the grid converter are studied by a literature survey. Based on the survey, the characteristics of the SOFC as an electrical power source are identified, and a solution to the interfacing of the SOFC in distributed generation is proposed. A mathematical model of the power conversion unit is provided, and the control design for the DC/DC converter and the grid converter is made based on the proposed interfacing solution. The limit cycling phenomenon is identified as a source of low-frequency current ripple, which is found to be insignificant when connected to a grid-tied converter. A method to mitigate a second harmonic originating from the grid interface is proposed, and practical considerations of the operation with the solid oxide fuel cell plant are presented. At the theoretical level, the thesis discusses and summarizes the methods to successfully derive a model for a DC/DC converter, a grid converter, and a power conversion unit. The results of this doctoral thesis can also be used in other applications, and the models and methods can be adopted to similar applications such as photovoltaic systems. When comparing the results with the objectives of the doctoral thesis, we may conclude that the objectives set for the work are met. In this doctoral thesis, theoretical and practical guidelines are presented for the successful control design to connect a SOFC-based distributed generation plant to the utility grid.

The purpose of this thesis is to examine what the normative, effective social Intranet solution is for Tellabs Mobile Routing business unit in terms of sharing knowledge more openly and effectively, fostering innovation, and improving team spirit and positive employee experience. Additionally, these aspects are researched from the intra- and inter-organizational points of view. The research is based on previous literature and empirical interviews. Based on these two items, an eight-fold recommendation proposal was created to change the current Intranet to become an effective social Intranet.

The goal of the Master’s thesis is to design a test stand for a centrifugal compressor. Different theoretical aspects of flow parameters measurements and test rigs built for the similar purposes in other research units are described in the theoretical part of the work. The process of components selection and the description of chosen components are given in the second part of the thesis. Besides measuring and control stages, the designed test stand has a closed-loop piping, an aftercooler and a surge tank. Overview and layout of the test rig is presented in the last chapter of the work.

Nowadays the energy efficiency has become one of the most concerned topics. Compressors are the equipment, which is very common in industry. Moreover, they tend to operate during long cycles and therefore even small decrease in power consumption can significantly reduce electricity costs during the year. And therefore it is important to investigate ways of increasing the energy efficiency of the compressors. In the thesis rotary screw compressor alongside with different control approaches is described. Simulation models for various control types of rotary screw compressor are developed. Analysis of laboratory equipment is conducted and results are compared with simulation. Suggestions of the real laboratory equipment improvement are given.

A quadcopter is a helicopter with four rotors, which is mechanically simple device, but requires complex electrical control for each motor. Control system needs accurate information about quadcopter’s attitude in order to achieve stable flight. The goal of this bachelor’s thesis was to research how this information could be obtained. Literature review revealed that most of the quadcopters, whose source-code is available, use a complementary filter or some derivative of it to fuse data from a gyroscope, an accelerometer and often also a magnetometer. These sensors combined are called an Inertial Measurement Unit. This thesis focuses on calculating angles from each sensor’s data and fusing these with a complementary filter. On the basis of literature review and measurements using a quadcopter, the proposed filter provides sufficiently accurate attitude data for flight control system. However, a simple complementary filter has one significant drawback – it works reliably only when the quadcopter is hovering or moving at a constant speed. The reason is that an accelerometer can’t be used to measure angles accurately if linear acceleration is present. This problem can be fixed using some derivative of a complementary filter like an adaptive complementary filter or a Kalman filter, which are not covered in this thesis.
