Concerns have increased regarding the detection of endocrine-disrupting compounds in the effluents of sewage treatment plants (STPs). These compounds are able to disrupt normal function of the endocrine system of living organisms even at trace concentrations. Natural and synthetic steroid estrogens (SEs) are believed to be responsible for the majority of the endocrine-disrupting effects. Municipal sewage, the main source of SEs in the environment, is a complex mixture of a wide range of pollutants at concentrations much higher than those of SEs. Low concentrations of SEs in the presence of copollutants thus make their removal problematic. The main objectives of the present work were to study the potential of photocatalytic oxidation (PCO) to effectively treat SE-containing aqueous solutions and to identify the optimum conditions for such treatment. The results showed that SEs can be effectively degraded photocatalytically. Due to the adsorption properties of SEs on the TiO2 photocatalyst surface alkaline medium was found to be beneficial for SE oxidation despite the presence of co-pollutants in concentrations characteristic for the sanitary fraction of municipal sewage. The potential of PCO to selectively oxidise SEs was examined in the presence of copollutants of the sanitary fraction of sewage - urea, saccharose and human urine. The impact of ethanol, often used as a solvent in the preparation of SE stock solutions, was also studied and the results indicated the need to use organic solvent-free solutions for the study of SE behaviour. Photocatalytic oxidation of SEs appeared to be indifferent towards the presence of urea in concentrations commonly found in domestic sewage. The effect of other co-pollutants under consideration was far weaker than could be expected from their concentrations, which are from one hundred to a few thousands times higher than those of the SEs. Although higher concentrations can dramatically slow down the PCO of SEs, realistic concentrations of co-pollutants characteristic for the sanitary fraction of domestic sewage allowed selective removal of SEs. This indicates the potential of PCO to be a selective oxidation method for SE removal from the separate sanitary fraction of municipal sewage.

The aim of this thesis was to produce information for the estimation of the flow balance of wood resin in mechanical pulping and to demonstrate the possibilities for improving the efficiency of deresination in practice. It was observed that chemical changes in wood resin take place only during peroxide bleaching, a significant amount of water dispersed wood resin is retained in the pulp mat during dewatering and the amount of wood resin in the solid phase of the process filtrates is very small. On the basis of this information there exist three parameters related to behaviour of wood resin that determine the flow balance in the process: 1. The liberation of wood resin to the pulp water phase 2. Theretention of water dispersed wood resin in dewatering 3. The proportion of wood resin degraded in the peroxide bleaching The effect of different factors on these parameters was evaluated with the help of laboratory studies and a literature survey. Also, information related to the values of these parameters in existing processes was obtained in mill measurements. With the help of this information, it was possible to evaluate the deresination efficiency and the effect of different factors on this efficiency in a pulping plant that produced low-freeness mechanical pulp. This evaluation showed that the wood resin content of mechanical pulp can be significantly decreased if there exists, in the process, a peroxide bleaching and subsequent washing stage. In the case of an optimal process configuration, as high as a 85 percent deresination efficiency seems to be possible with a water usage level of 8 m3/o.d.t.

Alkyl ketene dimers (AKD) are effective and highly hydrophobic sizing agents for the internal sizing of alkaline papers, but in some cases they may form deposits on paper machines and copiers. In addition, alkenyl succinic anhydrides (ASA)- based sizing agents are highly reactive, producing on-machine sizing, but under uncontrolled wet end conditions the hydrolysis of ASA may cause problems. This thesis aims at developing an improved ketene dimer based sizing agent that would have a lower deposit formation tendency on paper machines and copiers than a traditional type of AKD. The aim is also to improve the ink jet printability of a AKD sized paper. The sizing characteristics ofketene dimers have been compared to those of ASA. A lower tendency of ketene dimer deposit formation was shown in paper machine trials and in printability tests when branched fatty acids were used in the manufacture of a ketene dimer basedsizing agent. Fitting the melting and solidification temperature of a ketene dimer size to the process temperature of a paper machine or a copier contributes to machine cleanliness. A lower hydrophobicity of the paper sized with branched ketene dimer compared to the paper sized with traditional AKD was discovered. However, the ink jet print quality could be improved by the use of a branched ketene dimer. The branched ketene dimer helps in balancing the paper hydrophobicity for both black and color printing. The use of a high amount of protective colloidin the emulsification was considered to be useful for the sizing performance ofthe liquid type of sizing agents. Similar findings were indicated for both the branched ketene dimer and ASA.

Viime vuosien nopea kehitys on kiihdyttänyt uusien lääkkeiden kehittämisprosessia. Kombinatorinen kemia on tehnyt mahdolliseksi syntetisoida suuria kokoelmia rakenteeltaan toisistaan poikkeavia molekyylejä, nk. kombinatorisia kirjastoja, biologista seulontaa varten. Siinä molekyylien rakenteeseen liittyvä aktiivisuus tutkitaan useilla erilaisilla biologisilla testeillä mahdollisten "osumien" löytämiseksi, joista osasta saatetaan myöhemmin kehittää uusia lääkeaineita. Jotta biologisten tutkimusten tulokset olisivat luotettavia, on syntetisoitujen komponenttien oltava mahdollisimman puhtaita. Nämä parametrit on optimoitava parhaan tuloksen saamiseksi.

Several possible methods of increasing the efficiency and power of hydro power plants by improving the flow passages are investigated in this stydy. The theoretical background of diffuser design and its application to the optimisation of hydraulic turbine draft tubes is presented in the first part of this study. Several draft tube modernisation projects that have been carried out recently are discussed. Also, a method of increasing the efficiency of the draft tube by injecting a high velocity jet into the boundary layer is presented. Methods of increasing the head of a hydro power plant by using an ejector or a jet pump are discussed in the second part of this work. The theoretical principles of various ejector and jet pump types are presented and four different methods of calculating them are examined in more detail. A self-made computer code is used to calculate the gain in the head for two example power plants. Suitable ejector installations for the example plants are also discussed. The efficiency of the ejector power was found to be in the range 6 - 15 % for conventional head increasers, and 30 % for the jet pump at its optimum operating point. In practice, it is impossible to install an optimised jet pump with a 30 % efficiency into the draft tube as this would considerabely reduce the efficiency of the draft tube at normal operating conditions. This demonstrates, however, the potential for improvement which lies in conventional head increaser technology. This study is based on previous publications and on published test results. No actual laboratory measurements were made for this study. Certain aspects of modelling the flow in the draft tube using computational fluid dynamics are discussed in the final part of this work. The draft tube inlet velocity field is a vital boundary condition for such a calculation. Several previously measured velocity fields that have successfully been utilised in such flow calculations are presented herein.
