The purpose of this study was to evaluate the competence of nurse teachers, who are teaching nursing at polytechnic level in Finland. The following research questions were framed for the study: What kind of evaluation nurse teachers of their nursing competence, teaching skills, evaluation skills, personality factors and relationships with students. The data were collected by a questionnaire (A Tool for Evaluation of Requirements of Nurse Teacher, ERNT). The questionnaire regarded background factors and 20 statements divided in five categories. The five competence categories were: Nursing competence, Teaching skills, Evaluation skills, Personality factors and Relationships with students. The evaluation scale was a 5-point Likert-scale. The respondents were nurse teachers, teacher for emergency nursing, public health nurse and midwifery teachers from all polytechnics in Finland. Response rate to the questionnaire was 46 % (n=342). The data were analysed by using descriptive statistics. Mean scores and standard deviations for each item were calculated. Category scores were obtained by summing scores of all items within a category. The results of this study showed that nurse teacher evaluated their competence on a high level. Concerning the category Relationships with students (mean 4.61, standard deviation 0.71) they got the highest averages. The lowest scores were gained regarding the requirements associated with teaching skills (mean 4.30, standard deviation 0.82). Concerning a single question, the best score was achieved in ability to take students seriously (mean 4.66, standard deviation 0.71) and the lowest score was achieved for their guidance of students to advance in decision making (mean 4.15, Std 0.69). The nurse teachers evaluated themselves with relatively high scores concerning competence categories as a hole. In future it is important to study nurse teacher competence with students or authorities of health service.

The social activity of nurse teacher – a part of teacherhood Every nurse teacher must know the current health policy in order to use it in teaching. The conception of the role of health policy in curriculum and the concrete teaching of social activity are quite unclear. The purpose of this study was to describe the social activity of nurse teachers. The data were collected by a structured questionnaire (Paltta 1998) via E-mail. The questionnaire included background factors and nine items for society activities. The respondents were nurse teachers, teachers for emergency nursing, public health nurse and midwifery teachers from all polytechnics in Finland. Response rate was 46 % (n = 342). The data were analysed by using descriptive statistics. The results of this study showed that 36 % of nurse teachers evaluated themselves quite active in society activities and 43 % of them evaluated themselves inactive. 32 % of nurse teachers was member and involved to working in general organisations. 28 % of nurse teachers worked or have been worked in local commission or trustees. Nurse teachers evaluated their knowledge about health policy quite good (mean 3.75, Std 0.99). Their knowledge about education policy was also quite good (mean 3.57, Std 1.04). Nurse teachers updated their knowledge about health policy and education policy by reading professional journals, newspapers, internet and following television and radio. According to results nurse teachers are quite active in society activities even tough almost half of them evaluated themselves quite inactive. Although nurse teachers’ knowledge about health policy was quite good by their opinion, they must update and improve the knowledge. In the future it is important to study how nurse teachers use health policy in their teaching and how nurse students’ participation in society activities can be improved.

Obesity has become the leading cause of many chronic diseases, such as type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. The prevalence of obesity is high in developed countries and it is also a major cause of the use of health services. Ectopic fat accumulation in organs may lead to metabolic disturbances, such as insulin resistance.Weight loss with very-low-energy diet is known to be safe and efficient. Weight loss improves whole body insulin sensitivity, but its effects on tissue and organ level in vivo are not well known. The aims of the studies were to investigate possible changes of weight loss in glucose and fatty acid uptake and perfusion and fat distribution at tissue and organ level using positron emission tomography and magnetic resonance imaging and spectroscopy in 34 healthy obese subjects. The results showed that whole-body insulin sensitivity increased after weight loss with very-low-energy diet and this is associated with improved skeletal muscle insulin-stimulated glucose uptake, but not with adipose tissue, liver or heart glucose uptake. Liver insulin resistance decreased after weight loss. Liver and heart free fatty acid uptakes decreased concomitantly with liver and heart triglyceride content. Adipose tissue and myocardial perfusion decreased. In conclusion, enhanced skeletal muscle glucose uptake leads to increase in whole-body insulin sensitivity when glucose uptake is preserved in other organs studied. These findings suggest that lipid accumulation found in the liver and the heart in obese subjects without co-morbidies is in part reversible by reduced free fatty acid uptake after weight loss. Reduced lipid accumulation in organs may improve metabolic disturbances, e.g. decrease liver insulin resistance. The front end of innovation is regarded as one of the most important steps in building new software products or services, and the most significant benefits in software development can be achieved through improvements in the front end activities. Problems in the front end phase have an impact on customer dissatisfaction with delivered software, and on the effectiveness of the entire software development process. When these processes are improved, the likelihood of delivering high quality software and business success increases. This thesis highlights the challenges and problems related to the early phases of software development, and provides new methods and tools for improving performance in the front end activities of software development. The theoretical framework of this study comprises two fields of research. The first section belongs to the field of innovation management, and especially to the management of the early phases of the innovation process, i.e. the front end of innovation. The second section of the framework is closely linked to the processes of software engineering, especially to the early phases of the software development process, i.e. the practice of requirements engineering. Thus, this study extends the theoretical knowledge and discloses the differences and similarities in these two fields of research. In addition, this study opens up a new strand for academic discussion by connecting these research directions. Several qualitative business research methodologies have been utilized in the individual publications to solve the research questions. The theoretical and managerial contribution of the study can be divided into three areas: 1) processes and concepts, 2) challenges and development needs, and 3) means and methods for the front end activities of software development. First, the study discloses the difference and similarities between the concepts of the front end of innovation and requirements engineering, and proposes a new framework for managing the front end of the software innovation process, bringing business and innovation perspectives into software development. Furthermore, the study discloses managerial perceptions of the similarities and differences in the concept of the front end of innovation between the software industry and the traditional industrial sector. Second, the study highlights the challenges and development needs in the front end phase of software development, especially challenges in communication, such as linguistic problems, ineffective communication channels, a communication gap between users/customers and software developers, and participation of multiple persons in software development. Third, the study proposes new group methods for improving the front end activities of software development, especially customer need assessment, and the elicitation of software requirements.

International Monetary Fund (IMF) eli Kansainvälinen valuuttarahasto perustettiin v. 1945 valvomaan 187 jäsenmaansa rahoitusjärjestelmiä ja edistämään rahoitusmarkkinoiden vakautta ja kansainvälistä kauppaa. IMF julkaisee kansainvälisiä maksutasetilastoja n. 200 maasta, ulkomaankaupan tilastotietoa, aikasarjoja v. 1948 lähtien ja valtiontalouden rahoitustilastoja sekä maakohtaisia raportteja. Painettuun kokoelmaan kuuluu vuosikertomuksia, kausijulkaisuja, tilastoja ja monografioita. Ne käsittelevät makrotaloutta, taloudellista kehitystä, rahoitusmarkkinoita, kansainvälistä taloutta ja valuuttamarkkinoita. Kokoelmassa on yhteensä n. 4342 nimekettä ja se karttuu jatkuvasti. Kokoelman vanhin julkaisu on vuodelta 1944. Suurin osa kokoelman julkaisuista on ilmestynyt v. 1995 - 2011. Sitä uudempia ei ole enää hankittu painettuina. Kokoelmaan kuuluu erilaisia vuosikirjoja pitkältä ajanjaksolta, kuten Annual report (1948 -), Annual Report on Exchange Arrangements (1990 -), Balance of payments statistics yearbook (1938 - ), Direction of trade statistics yearbook (1958 - ), Government finance statistics yearbook (1952 - ) ja International financial statistics yearbook (1991 - ). Kokoelma sisältää myös kausijulkaisuja kuten Economic review (1951 - ), IMF staff papers (1951 -) ja International financial statistics (1948 -). Kokoelmaan kuuluvat myös elektronisia julkaisuja sisältävät IMF E-Library ja AREAER -tietokannat. AREAR-tietokannassa on Annual Report on Exchange Arrangements -julkaisut sähköisessä muodossa. Tietokannassa on dataa mm. IMF:n jäsenmaiden valuutta- ja kauppajärjestelyistä. IMF E-Library, sisältää elektronisia julkaisuja sekä tilastotietokannat: International financial statistics (IFS), Balance of payments statistics (BOP), Direction of trade statistics (DOT) ja Government finance statistics (GFS). Julkaisuja on yhteensä n. 11 806. Kokoelman uudempaa osaa säilytetään Suomen Pankin kirjaston avokokoelmassa ja vanhempaa varastokokoelmassa. Painetut julkaisut ovat käytettävissä kirjastossa ja lainattavissa lukuun ottamatta tilastojulkaisuja, kausijulkaisuja ja vuosikirjoja. Elektronisia tietokantoja voi käyttää vain organisaation henkilökunta.

Tutkimus avaa näkökulmia ammatillisen ja yleissivistävän koulutuksen ylisukupolviseen periytyvyyteen naisten osalta. Tutkimuksessa tarkastellaan yhden suvun neljän sukupolven naisten kouluttautumiseen ja koulutusvalintoihin perustuen sitä, minkälaisia koulutuskulttuurisia siirtymiä äidiltä tyttärelle sukupolvesta toiseen välittyy. Tämä tarkastelu nivoutuu koulutusmahdollisuuksien, naissivistyksen sekä koulutuksen merkityksen muutoksiin kuluneen sadan vuoden ajalta, ja tuo esille koulutusvalintojen taustalla olevia sukupolveen, sukupuoleen ja sosiaaliseen taustaan kytkeytyviä arvostuksia. Tiedonkeruumenetelmänä käytettiin kerronnallista, muistitietoon perustuvaa teemahaastattelua. Narratiivisen haastattelun avulla kerättiin neljän sukupolven naisilta (N = 17) kokemuksia ja kertomuksia kotia, kasvatusta ja koulutusta koskevista teemoista. Kerronnallisen materiaalin tukena käytettiin haastateltavilta saatua dokumenttiaineistoa, kuten koulutodistuksia. Tutkimusaineiston pohjalta muodostettiin kokemuskertomukset, jotka luokiteltiin narratiivien analyysia käyttäen osoittamaan koulutusratkaisuja sekä narratiivista analyysia hyödyntäen koulutuskulttuurisia siirtymiä äidiltä tyttärille. Analyysin perusteella koulutuskulttuuriset siirtymät jäsentyvät jatkuvuuksina ja irtaantumisina edeltävän sukupolven koulutustraditioon ja arvostuksiin nähden. Aineistosta jäsentyy ammatillisen ja yleissivistävän koulutustradition jatkuvuus sukulinjoittain kolmessa perättäisessä sukupolvessa. Toisessa sukulinjassa ammatillisesti kouluttautuneet ja sitä tyttärilleen hyvänä koulutuksena pitävät äidit näkevät sen toimivan itsensä elättämisen ja taloudellisen toimeentulon siivittäjänä sekä nopeana väylänä työelämään. Toisessa sukulinjassa yleissivistävästi kouluttautuneet ja sitä tyttärilleen hyvänä koulutuksena pitävät äidit katsovat sen toimivan sivistyksen hankkimisen ja itsensä toteuttamisen perustana sekä pohjakoulutuksena myöhempiin opintoihin. Edeltävän sukupolven koulutustraditiosta irtaantuminen jäsentyy aineistosta viime sotien jälkeisessä Suomessa ja vuosituhannen vaihteessa seuraavan sukupolven tytärten jatkaessa yleissivistäviin opintoihin. Ylemmän kansakoulun käynyt äiti pitää tyttärilleen hyvänä koulutuksena yleissivistävää koulutusta, sillä hän näkee sen toimivan tytärten edeltävää sukupolvea helpomman elämän ja henkisen alan työn mahdollistajana, ja siten irtaantumisena ruumiillisen työn kulttuurista. Puoli vuosisataa myöhemmin ammatillisesti kouluttautuneet äidit pitävät tyttärilleen hyvänä koulutuksena joko ammatillista tai yleissivistävää, sillä he näkevät kumman tahansa näistä koulutuksista toimivan tytärten omavalintaisen tulevaisuuden vaihtoehtoina.
