Strawberries are one of the healthiest fruits you can eat. They are a great source of Vitamin C. One serving of just eight strawberries will provide 140 % of the US Recommended Daily Allowance of Vitamin C. In a recent study, strawberries ranked second among the top ten fruits in antioxidant capacity (TAC), which is one reason why they may help prevent cancer and heart disease. A 5.8 mile section of Dubuque County (Iowa) Road D-53 was selected for this project, the objective of which were to: 1. identify a cost effective asphalt emulsion bound macadam typical cross section; 2. determine the effectiveness of engineering fabric placed under macadam roadbeds; and 3. evalaute the use of emulsions in surface seal coats. A number of conclusions were reached: 1. The minus #200 sieve material for the macadam stone should be held to a minimum. For the emulsion used on this project, the minus #200 material had less than 4 percent to achieve satisfactory coating of the macadam stone. 2. The placement of the emulsion treated macadam required no additional equipment or time than the plain macadam placement. 3. Emulsion treating the macadam stone for the shoulder base appears unnecessary. 4. The emulsion treated macadam base beneath an asphaltic concrete wearing surface yielded a higher structural rating than the plain macadam beneath a comparable ashaltic concrete surface. 5. The performance of the fabric between the subgrade and the macadam base to prevent soil intrusion into the base could not be determined by the non-destructive testing conducted. 6. When no choke stone is used over the macadam base, allowance for ac mix overrun should be made. 7. Use of an emulsion instead of a cutback asphalt saved money and energy. However, the poor performance of the seal coat negated any real savings.

In several locations of Iowa, it is becoming more difficult to produce concrete sand consistently at a reasonable cost. Both ASTM and AASHTO have specifications for concrete sands that allow a finer, poorer graded sand than Iowa specifications. The objective of the study was to develop standard mix designs to permit the use of finer graded sand for PC concrete. Three hundred cylinders were made from five sands available in the state. Based on the results of the study, the following are recommended: (1) Create another class of concrete sand by: (a) lowering the current mortar strength ratio from 1.5 to 1.3, (b) raising the allowance for the percent passing one sieve and retained on the next from 40 to 45, and (c) including a provision that 25 to 60 percent passing the number 30 sieve is required for the sand; and (2) Modify the standard paving mixes with and without fly ash for use with the finer sand as follows: (a) 8% more cement and fly ash for B-2 to B-5 mixes, (b) 7% more cement and fly ash for A-2 to A-5 mixes, and (c) 5% more cement and fly ash for C-2 to C-5 mixes and water reduced mixes.
